well, whether the new beta bios 602 fixes the tee noise or not is still up in the air(i still get it! :() As for the batterylife goes, it is same for me with all the bios i have tried. I have a Hitachi 120HD that is a little noisy but nothing major.

SOCKETBIND: I am gonna check on the fan with 602bios that i am using(will post back)

Topic away from errors or Tee's....
So one thing I've always thought was cool about mac laptops is the way their CD/DVD rom drives operate. I mean the way the CD/DVD actually slides into the laptop rather than a drive sliding out, and you put the disc in the drive and closing it. Does anyone know of any CD/DVD rw combo drives that operate like a mac's, that are black, and that would fit in our system?
I think it would be a cool upgrade for me.

    Tom
P.S. is there a name for this "style" of drive, so I can begin searching if you guys do not know of any specifics?

Uh, I think it's called a slot loading drive. I don't know if there is one available for the S96, however...

Yes that is a slot loading drive. Newegg has a Pioneer slot loading DVD Burner. I'm debating should I get it or not since I already have a tray loading one. You can head over and check it out.

The S96S is built according to CBB (Common Building Block) or something like that. I bought the DVD drive for the S96S from Newegg and it works. It seems to use the same interface. The S96S was built so that you can easily buy a replacement. The slot loading drive has the same dimensions as my tray loading drive. I am sure it will fit with no problems.

yeah, exactly, the only thing im slightly weary about is the load button...im not sure if that means I have to push that button before I slide the disc in.... because if so thats super lame.

No. Actually, you slide the disc in and the machine will automatically load it in. You push the eject button to get the disk out only. I used the slot loading ones before. Its like the ones in the cars where you just slide it in half way and it pulls it in. I find it pretty neat. This should work the same way.

I want to make sure this drive can write to dual layer discs.

Yes, the DL means Dual Layer. It's 8X for regular DVD, 4X for Dual Layer and 24X for CDs. Yea, that's the same problem for me also. 70 Bucks for it. I got the pioneer for 60 half a year ago. I was looking for a slot that time and it was rare. There was one but cost 120 bucks for it. You can try to sell it to someone who has a laptop. If not, ebay is the only option.

there's the link to the slot loading Pioneer.

Intel haven't released a new driver or bios in a long long time. I'm still waiting on the promised half size turbo memory. Seems like this is another empty promise. I have the same config as you Satdog. Exactly the same.

Hi, check my BIOS guide (signature), the 1st post after the main guide. That might help. You will probably need to contact support for the exact procedure for that crash recovery... it is also possible that your particular notebook doesn't support it in which case you are out of luck and have to send it in for repair work.

Question for all those who set a password in bios to system. When your computer boots, just hit enter without typing anything. I notice that it bypasses the password all together. What is the sense of having a bios password? Am I the only one with this?

midlet, it's probably a better idea to send it in like satdog suggests. You are not very familiar with these things and in any case there's a good possibility that you don't have that crash recovery function.

To answer your question now, I don't know of a way to check if that function is available, because, as you said, your notebook won't start. The only way is to call ASUS support and ask, and also if crash recovery IS available, ask how exactly to go about in order to reflash the BIOS. It's probably something along the lines of making a bootable CD, placing the BIOS file on the CD and naming it in a particular way.

Simpleofmind, there are two types of passwords: one that protects access to the computer (i.e. it doesn't boot without it) and another that protects access to the BIOS (Setup password). Are you sure it's not the second that you have set? Although if you get prompted for the password it's unlikely...

Or perhaps you set up an empty password by mistake?

I tried to set a user password and also disable the user password. When the laptop boots up, it ask for a password before letting me go any farther. If I hit enter without a password, I by pass the password and go straight into windows. I'm thinking this is a problem related to a BIOS issue. I think I have the 113 bios. It is just weird.

Yeah, looks like a BIOS coding bug from ASUS -- don't we all know the are in the habit of making these...

Try updating the BIOS, the issue might have been fixed in later versions if there are any.

Yep but if you're not using passwords then they might have fixed the problem, without you noticing the difference. So I still think Simpleofmind should try an update.

Hi, probably the fact that you don't see a difference between batt saving and performance mode is that the computer is already saving as much power as it can in the performance modes :) Mainly by speedstepping the CPU. Add to that the fact that in normal usage the CPU won't break any sweat, so it'll basically always run at its lowest speed and with max power savings.

To additionally save power, you might want to look into changing power profiles for the GPU.

yeah, i have the hitachi 120 gb too. I have always wondered, how come after you format a drive, it has less space on it? like mine is 120gb, but after i format it so i can install windows and whatnot, it says it has 111gb? where did the other 9gbs go?

Anyone have a seagate drive in their laptop? and notice an outstanding noise difference?

You guys gotta remember this is from the old days. 1MB is actually 1024 bytes but most people just round it off to 1000 for 1MB. Those days, that little 24 bytes does not make a difference. As you get to the gigabytes, the difference gets bigger and more noticeable.

I have people ask me about that alot. I use to work in a computer store and people use to ask for a refund or say we selling them different parts because the hard drive was never the capacity it was advertised. Even some fellow co workers didn't know why.

For the password issue, my friend has the same laptop with the newer bios (I think 117). Samething. Pressing enter without a password bypasses the password. Can someone tell me their bios version which won't let them bypass the password by just hitting enter?

Hi i have a very irritating problem. Games on my S96S crashes a lot. Weird thing is that it happens when i run them on full screen. Playing in windowed mode is possible. It happens on winxp/vista x64 and 32bit. It looks like a gfx drivers problem, but i've tested a lot of gfx driver versions and still the same. Changing bios version or any other drivers doesnt help too:/ Anyone had problem like that? Could anyone help me pls?:>

Csky12 - On the bottom of the S96S there are 3 screws. Unscrew them and you can clean the cpu and gpu fan.

I never experience any crashes playing games either. I'm running Vista 32 bit.
