Sangria, I called customer support and asked them if there is any performance diff between AHCI and IDE mode> they said none, CAn anybody confirm this?. Well anyway the ACHI driver should come with the driver CD that your laptop came with. In the disk, go to the make a disc tab and it will have ACHI 32bit or 64bit options>but i don't know burn it on a disc. U can give it a try c if it works.

Is 0113.rom the correct bios even? I tried flashing my laptop with several different windows flash utility programs and they all failed. Or is it one of those things where you have to flash during DOS?

This is a questions for all the owners. What is the manufacturer of the webcam? On my computer, it says D-Max stk115. On my friends it says Azurewave GL860. We both have the S96S. The installation CD comes with D-max driver but intel's website list the Azurewave as the webcam driver. I'm just curious as to which one it is.

    Hey,

    I just bought a:
    Asus S96s
    T7300 Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz FSB 800Mhz 4MB L2 Cache
    2GB DDR2/667
    160GB SATA HDD
    nVidia 8600 - 256MB Dedicated

I was wondering if it is possible to ad the Intel® Turbo Memory card to this computer. Intels website says the card interfaces through a PCIe slot and the specs say there is a "ExpressCard Slot". I'm not sure if this is the same thing.

Alternatively, Microsoft's site claims you can add non-volatile flash memory such as an SD card or USB key to make use of the Vista ReadyBoost feature.

Has anyone else looked into this feature?

qaspok, you should use the Half Height Asus ITM Memory. Btw, it is not available now.

For your second question, you can use an SD card (should be faster than 150x), and then, Vista is gonna say ok to use it for ReadyBoost.

However, I actually didn try it yet, but just waiting for the half height turbo memory, or I should use and SD card if this is never released.

rh1406, Thanks for the tip on the "Half Height Asus ITM Memory" Does anyone have any good links for info/news on this product? Would it use the Express slot?

I read an article the other day about Sony not supporting turbo memory yet. Their claim was that it won't really be functional until the next service pack for vista is released.(of course Microsoft denies this) I hope they get things working soon. It should not only decrease load times but save battery life since the hard drive won't need to spin up as often. (and make me feel a little less guilty for getting that slow 5400 rpm 160Gb Hard drive)

Well, I don't have screenshots or anything. But when you do a clean install of Vista, there should be a screen that lets you choose and manage your partitions (delete, format, etc...) On the lower left corner, there should be a button that says "install drivers" or something like that. Click on that button and follow the instructions. Just pop out your Vista CD and put in the drivers CD. After it installs, put your Vista CD back in and everything should go smoothly.

I have the Azurewave as well.

Yes. To instal update of bios you need bios in 0113.bin not 0113.rom then you can use asus update but we need someone who can do update and his bios to update our bios.... :?

Hey, I just purchased an Asmobile s96s that came without the embedded Bluetooth module. Could someone post the manufacturer and part number for the module it ships with.

I found a link to the service manual, but the picture is really low res and no information is listed.

If anyone could post some nice high res pictures of the mobo and the slots that wold be awesome!!!!
If not I'll upload some when i am done with the install.

Try this, reboot the laptop, press F8 i believe and boot windows with VGA mode enabled. Or go into windows in safe mode. From there reinstall the graphic drivers.

If that doesn't work, post here again.

what is the benefit of buying a docking station? ive always been curious because you still have to hook things up to the docking station, and then the laptop to the docking station, it seems like there is no point.... can some one fill me in?

Yep but when you wan to un plugged your laptop you'll just unplug one thing (the docking station) then when you come back to your desk you'll just plug one thing and eveything else well be plugged in. So in order to be really usefull you'll need to be in the following situation. You have a lot of peripherals (mouse, keyborad, printer, etxernal lcd, lan, etc) and you have a place were you usually work (were all the previous things reside) but you frequently need to leave with your laptop.

In most cases the docking station is connected vias usb but in the case of the s96s it has a dedicated port which makes even better

The main benefit of docking station is ergonomics and your health. Working on notebook force neck to stay in sharp angle for long time since keyboard is in baseline with desk and monitor is too low for your eyes.

Guess that is most valuable effect of docking station, for nerds it'll be the wires & ports issue :)

So one of a pro reasons for buying docking station should be pain in neck and comfort.

As Cancer777 said I was wrong. Saw picture of docking station few minutes after posting this post, but was too lazy about updating post.

actually your talking about a laptop stand (which sometimes come with docking capabilities) not the same thing. laptop stands are a lot cheaper if they dont have any ports. any docking station (whether it comes with a stand or not will cost you more).

Hey guys I just got bought mine today. Anyone in ontario, canada go to canada computers they have it for a decent price. I just wanted to know one thing (haven't opened it up yet, gotta wait for it to come tmr) what is the model number for the 9cell battery for this notebook, or if there is a 12cell battery even better. Some one let me know if they have gotten one yet :).

    Thanks,

P.S. Probably stupid to say 12 cell i am pretty sure that those are only compatible with computers who use 8 cell batteries, but hey I've been wrong before :).

Hey i just got my s96s from Canada Computers last week. The biggest let down is that the "Optional" wireless card which later appears on your invoice is not included and phone support is really unprofessional/unhelpful. I had to get mine from ncix.com. (whats the point of a notebook with no wifi?) There is also no bluetooth if that is an issue. As for the battery, it comes with the 6 cell battery and there is a 9 cell upgrade. I'm not sure yet where you can find one that will ship to Canada. I'll be buying one soon as well if anyone has any suggestions.

P.S. Someone should just make a set up guide so the same questions don't get rehashed so much

    Hi,
I've got a strange issue with standby, it only seems to work in Vista and Linux (Kubuntu 7.04). XP goes into deep sleep but after waking up the screen is totally blank and black, the system seems to be intact except the screen. I'm using the nVidia driver downloaded from Laptopvideo2Go.com (version 165.01) as the nVidia driver for XP shipped on the installation CD absolutely does not work, right in the middle of the installation it freezes (with black screen, blinking cursor) and after a loud beep the machine restarts itself.

I did some research but none of these work:

Strange thing is, Vista has no problems with the driver on the installation CD. The XP installation has the latest patches from Windows Update.

Does anybody experience this problem and has a solution for it? That's all I can think of and ran out ideas. By the way, may I ask those who have a working XP configuration that what version of BIOS they use?

    Gabriel
