tomgrm y do u want to disable intel speed step? if u do , your cpu will always run at 1.8ghz creating more heat and less battery life.

i was just trying to get a better bios than I have now. the one i have now doesnt have hardly any options what so ever, but the one you describe sounds like it is better.
also - for anyone who was having the intermittant teeee sound, i disabled the power saving usb stuff also and i notice my laptop is quieter. i never noticed the teee sound clicking on and off unless it was completely silent and i listened for it (basicly it wasnt something i was concerned with but did it just to see what would happen) and it made that go away for me. so everyone should do that to reduce that noise.
Thanks for all your help again guys!

the only difference i noticed between 0107 and the 0109 bios was the intel speed step option. There were no performance difference or any other issues by changing the bios :(

this is lame! is there a way to update the bios without using the asus update tool?

so u downloaded the asus update tool from the intel's site right? does this happen when u try to use both the update utility given in your driver disk as well as the one on intel's site?.
Where did u get the notebook from? u can also call tech support and find out y u can't update the bios
I don't think there is another way of updating the bios :(

For anyone who ordered a S96S from Xotic PC, did you guys receive e-mails showing your laptops progress? I originally ordered a Compal IF90 from them, but cancelled due to the wait. My original order is still up on their site so I can't check there for updates. The only thing I've received thus far, is an e-mail saying they changed my order. (Its only been 2 or 3 days though).
Also, how long did it take to get yours? Mines basic, no bluetooth, no tv tuner.

    Thanks,
    ~ Jessica

    Hi

I got mine from xotic pc. I payed by a personal check so it took a while to clear the check and stuff about 3weeks. YOU u should just call them and find out about your order(that is what i did). They were very helpful :)

XoticPC probably doesn't e-mail additional status updates until shipping confirmation, and I've heard the order status page on their site isn't too accurate since they have been very busy trying to fulfill orders. It's always best to drop them an e-mail or simply call.

I bought my Asus S96S from Powernotebooks after canceling my original order for a Sager NP2090. I switched my order on Wed, 8/1 in the late afternoon and received the Asus laptop Thurs, 8/9. So it took about a week to get my fairly basic configured S96S . Even though I ordered from Powernotebooks, I think your wait should be about the time since both resellers seem to get stock from the same suppliers.

Oh yeah, my initial impression of the S96S is that it's big! This is my 2nd laptop and my 1st one is a Inspiron 600m. So going from a 14" (4:3) to a widescreen 15.4" was larger jump than I expected. ;)

no luck yet, but when it comes down to it, its no big deal because i don't experience the Teeee sound. and disabling the power saver option on the usb ports got rid of the little noise i ever did hear.
so im still happy. are you experiencing the TEEEEEEE noise?

If u go to device manager and go to the place where it lists all the USB root hubs, click on each USB root hub and go to power management and uncheck "allow computer turn off to save power", it will take out the Tee Teeeeee morse code sounding high pitched noise. The noise not audible until u put your ears to the keyboard. Another great option. But inserting a USB device completely removes the noise.

People who have xp installed on their s96s can try the new NGO driver based on forceware 162.18. NGO makes good modded drivers and they have been doing it for a long time balancing performance and quality. give it a try they work good for me.

You can download them at guru3d.com > a fabulous site with great knowledgable forum members

    thanks for your answer.
Yes, unfortunately I am experiencing the Teee-noise, and it's pretty loud :(
Disabling the power saver option didn't help... It's really getting to the point, where I'm not using the notebook as much as I would without the noise...

    I'm running Vista btw.

u can enable the c4 state after a while(to get some battery life) but keep rmclock running(some weired reason, the noise gets suppressed  ). As suggested earlier by egi, u can also plug in a USB device, this works sometimes too(as long as u don't restart).

Hi I'm interested in purchasing this laptop, but I'm wondering about the keyboard flex issues. I'm thinking of purchasing a keyboard from another manufacturer, does anyone know where I would find compatible keyboards, or even better have any recommendations for a good keyboard replacement? Thanks.

Hey everyone! My laptop is running great and everything, I just have 1 annoying problem to solve: The screen doesn't seem to be turning back on after going into standby. My OS is Vista. The only suspicion I have is that it could be from the modified INF I am using for my video card drivers from laptopvideo2go.com, other than that, I am lost. Thanks for any help! :)

    Hi,

i have problem with bios. I had 0107 bios, but then i tried to install 0113 ( link) because of high-pitched sound, but when i installed it via dos i couldnt run my windows anymore :-(. I have windows vista business 32bit in czech localization (maybe that could be the problem?).

I will be glad for any advice. Maybe if someone can send me 0107 bios (with .exe file)

    Thanks.

your laptop does that to save power. but you will notice that when you start doing something that requires processing power it will shoot up to its maximum speed. dont worry, your not loosing any performance, it only slows down when you are using it to its full capacity. mine does the same thing. dooooooo nnnoooooottttt worry, haha

hEY MAN IF U CAN'T BOOT INTO WINDOWS _-------- go to bios and see if your sata HD is set to work as IDE. If it is not in IDE mode it won't boot unless u have AHCI drivers installed.

here my 0109 bios that came with my laptop, only has the .rom file, use asus update utility to update bios(for some ppl this doesn't work) http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J9S9NP50

some people report that they can't update the bios through the asus update utility. I don't know y because we have the same computer. does it matter if it is a VBI or CBB model? the one that i got from xoticpc is VBI model. Also updating bios, i think u can use those .exe and .bat to update bios but i don't if u can or how to do it. To be honest i don't any gain from switching from 0109 to 0113

Well, i am not sure, if i am the right person for giving advices, but the only way, how to flash your bios, when you have problems with asus updater is via dos. You have to make boot cd or dvd (for example nero has this option) with these files (bios.exe, 0113.ROM and AFUDOS.exe). Than restart, write D:\ (your cd/dvd) and then write "bios" - In case, that system will boot from harddisk you will have to set up booting from cd/dvd in bios. But you may have the same problem with IDE/AHCI...

PS: one more question... where can i download ahci driver? :)
