so then the speed I pick up from the 7200 isnt worth it?
-
-
no don't get me wrong, the extra rpm will give ofcourse extra performance to my knowledge(seek time, load time..etc) but for normal use 5400rpm will get the job done. Do u guys who have 7200rpm get any vibration or can some of u comment on this, any problems?
-
i recommend the 7200rpm one. i have one and get no noise from it and no heat. I also have had laptops with both, and i can see big differences in some of the things i do
-
-
Yes, I recommend the 7200rpm hard drive as well - It'll speed up the computer quite a bit on a lot of tasks and I haven't had any heat or battery issues.
Second, I do not have this "teeee" noise that people are talking about.
Also, I am running Vista and all the hot keys work fine for me. -
-
I have a new inspiron 1520 and your solution based on youbastard settings worked like a charm for me.
You don't mention any profile settings, though.
My question is: are the settings you give safe for the notebook in the long run? I haven't experienced any decrease in temperature. My core processors run at 45-50º most of the time (I'm new to laptops and I know they heat up a lot, but I don't know if such a temperature is high or not)
Another thing: why back to c4? Did you keep the resto of the settings on through rmclock? -
Sorry, my post was regarding TEE sound and solution given from satdog (posts #20 and 47)

Hi, I have a S96s. It works great but when i play games everything really response slow. Like the game DIRT when i want to steer i takes i while before i get a response (0,5sec). But almost with every game. Also on Lost Planet DX9.
DX10 doesn't work because it thinks i dont have Direct x 10
Running Vista Ultimate. (err3)
And there is another problem
When i want to install a 32bit version of Vista i hangs on the last part of the setup. Does anybody know how to fix this?
Ill hope somebody can help me with this problem.
Just normal use it works great.
Thanks -
Hey, while I was away on vacation I was able to fix the hotkeys. I don't know why, but when I tried to reinstall the ATK Hotkeys utility for the third time, it worked. I have no idea why. Anyways, thanks for the advice.
Oh, and I am using vista 32bit by the way. -
Hey guys, I signed up to this forums just because I saw you have a s96s owners lounge I should be getting mine in a couple of days as well, I ordered from powernotebooks.com (who have one of the frendliest tech support) and i got it with 2ghz, 2gb ram dual channel, and 160gb 7200 sata II.
I am excited that I got it and already choosing software to put on it, but my biggest dillema is the OS. I am stuck between xp 32, xp 64, vista 32, vista 64. I usually play games (mostly world of warcraft) on my computer and listen to music at the same time, and have firefox open also (in other words, plenty of multitasking). I am seriously thinking of doing a dual boot with vista and xp, but now im not sure which version (32 or 64) should i choose.
Which OS you guys recommend for what I want? Oh, and where can I find the best drivers for the graphics card? Thanks for any help you can give me -
oh btw, these settings are based on youbastard(credit to him), only thing was that i had to find the right version of rmclock to see these settings for my cpu. -
the drivers are provided by INTEL. here is the link http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2792&lang=eng -
I am using the 162.18 XP 32bit drivers from laptopvideo2go.com
(note that u have to replace the original inf w/ the modded inf provided in the website) -
Hi! Im planning to upgrade my laptop's processor to a Merom T7400. Can anyone kindly confirm if this is compatible with the S96J? Any first hand experience, issues? And im hoping someone could also confirm what upgrade I need to do with the BIOS and if I could download the upgrade software over the net. Appreciate your feedbacks.
thanks,
JM -
The Core Duo is old gen so I doubt it will work, even on the desktop market, not all s775 motherboards supports both Pentium D (Core Duo) and Core 2 Duo since they use a differnet FSB/voltage/Amperage
You should email either Asus or Intel -
I should be getting my Asus S96S this week after canceling my Sager NP2090 order. I was waiting for the Sager for about 3 weeks, but decided to switch to the Asus since I wanted to get a new laptop in time for a business trip next week. The Sager would have been a better deal (cost vs. performance wise), but I'm looking forward to using the Asus.
Oh yeah, any tips on dual booting between Win XP & Vista (32 bit)? I figure installing XP first then Vista second is the best plan. -
Okay guys, so ive been searching through this forum and i also have the asus s96s and i LOVE IT! ive had no problems at all. its super quiet and the graphics are amazing. in counter-strike source i have everything turned on max, including HDR and all that jazz and i still get 50FPS! its great
im using 1.77 ghz core 2 duo
windows xp
120 gb 5400rpm hard drive
2gb Ram
Im using all the pre-installed drivers and stuff, and i was wondering what driver updates would you suggest and why? on this forum and other forums people are saying to get a bunch of different driver updates, so yeah, which ones specifically would you guys suggest and why?
Thanks in advance!
Mr Tom (loves his new laptop) -
Try some games like Oblivion, not 3 years old games
Drivers? The lastest one? -
no teeeeee sound... lucky you... hope my brother is as lucky as you (I ordered one for him)
-
yeah I dont have the Teee sound.
the newest game i have is Command and Conquer 3 and i can have the video options all the way up on that one too and it runs smooth as ever as well. its great.
i dont play oblivion. -
and where do i find video card drivers for the 8600m gs
on the Nvidia site when i go to the drivers download thing, the 8600gs M isnt supported when i click the 8 series thing...
where are you guys getting the new drivers? -
Does anyone know when ASUS finally starts giving us a chance to buy GODDAMN half size turbo memory for ASUS laptops?
-
thanks man, also I was wondering if you guys ever fixed your teeeeeeeee sound problem? It seems like Asus would have came out with a fix for that by now or something.
also, how do i increase the ammount of ram the video card can use? it says 256 shared, but how do i make sure it is using that 256? also can i increase it any higher? please help! thanks guys! this forum is amazingly helpful and the people here are much nicer than most other forums ive been on. -
I'm also one of those experiencing the pitch of death, but I read somewhere that changing usb to be hi-speed helps. The problem is that I can't find this option in the BIOS. Can someone help ?
-
..... Im getting really stressed about this teeeee sound is ti coming form vibrations of the laptop?? is the air flow making a whistle?? or is it like a componet making the sound by itself??? any chance its heat making a component go teeeee? (ar5 or a cooler might remedy the situation)
Im gettign this laptop for my brother for college and im worried if the noise its too loud it will be disruptive in class -
In power saving mode the fans aren't suppose to be working no?
-
also maybe heat its causing said component to start making the teeee sound... does anyone that own a s96s with ar5 ( for the cpu and gpu) or a cooler pad is experiencing this sound??? -
jeeez guys, k if u haven't read the whole thread from pg1 then here is a summar of the TEee phenomenon.
1.IT comes from mother board , not sure from capasitor or other components.
2. IT only results because of intel's speed step. When the cpu goes into 1.2ghtz state to save power, this happens. IF u disable speed step in the bios and let it run at1.8ghtz there won't be any noise. However, doing this will ofcource decrease your batter life.
3. I don't think asus or intel will be able to fix this problem. Although it is their responsibility
4. This is a popular widespread problem. HP's and Dell' are haunted by this. Do a little reasearch and u will find out. This happens in the new Dell 1520, HP DV6000t, 6500t.
5. There is a fix using rm clock. Refer to end of page2 and try my settings(i got this settings from youbastard over the internet). Disabling c4 state will get rid of the problem, but u will experience slight decrease in battery life. I used those settings for a while and now i enabled c4 state back ON and i still hear the noise but very barely and low(only when i put my ears close to the keyboard!) -
-
thanks, so the sound is coming from the motherboard, but then why some people report that they dont have this sound??? does it only happen with CPUs over 1.8ghz??? I mean everyone gets the same motherboard why are some people spared??? maybe I can replicate a teeee free laptop -
i believe that you don't control turbo cache and it just works when it's needed
-
-
sigh guess its a lottery then, well hope my brother has some luck
-
i sent my laptop back over the teee sound. I'm crossing my fingers that the one i get back doesnt make this sound. I have some doubts about the people that say they don't have it. Maybe some people just dont hear this high frequency sound. My wife can barely hear it when it drives me crazy
-
relax cancer777, its no biggie. If u use the rmclock to disable the c4 state and completely remove the noise, the worst case is that u will lose 10-15min of battery life
-
I also had the teeee sound. I sent my notebook back to powernotebooks almost four weeks ago, and still haven't gotten it back. They tried replacing the mobo, but it failed some tests, so its still being worked on. It's a bummer all around.
-
Yeah I still think is a very good value so im getting it anyways thanks
-
hey when My laptop starts up, rather than going through the standdard black and white dos looking screen where it shows all the components and memory test and yada yada yada, there is just an intel logo and a black screen until windows xp loads, is there a way to turn that intel screen off so I can get into the bios and setup and stuff?
thanks! -
the thing that helps, atleast for me, to get rid of the sound, is plugging a usb mouse in. the sound just disappears and doesnt come back, if i dont restart the computer. so far it worked every time for me )
-
-
i dont see the option in the bios to turn off the speed step..... where do i look for that, i hit f2 at the start and then i dont see it anywhere. any help would be great!
thanks in advance -
lol, just tried it . it works with any usb device. I plug in my flash drive once and took it out and the noise was gone but if u restart it will comeback. Thanks egi -
ok here is what i found out. My laptop was shipped with 0109 bios and it had the intel speed step disable/enable feature in the bios . After installing the 0107 bios from intel's website , i don't have the option anymore. Luckily i saved the 0109 bios. IF u use asus update utility , u will find out that 0109 bios is a newer version. HEre is the link for the 0109 bios http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J9S9NP50
-
THANKS SO MUCH! i have one question though. that download link gave me the .rom file and no install file. how do i install this?
thanks again! -
1. go here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2792&lang=eng and download asus update tool
2. open up asus update tool and click one of the options to install the new bios, follow the wizard and it will ask u to locate the .rom file. Click on the 0109 .rom and flash. It should restart after that and go to bios , it will show u the intel speed step options. -
aright another new discovery thanks to egi. If u go to device manager and go to the place where it lists all the USB root hubs, click on each USB root hub and go to power management and uncheck "allow computer turn off to save power", it will take out the Tee Teeeeee morse code sounding high pitched noise. The noise not audible until u put your ears to the keyboard. Another great option. But inserting a USB device completely removes the noise.
-
when i tried to use the bios file you gave me it gave me this error:
"Due to BIOS inner framework was changed, please download the latest software from ASUSTek website"
does this mean i need a different bios file all together or do i need a different bios update utility?
hmm -
i am using asus update version 7.09.03. can u check the version of your?(open up the utility and look in the top left hand corner). We have the same computer , not sure y it gives u this error. Did u pick the option update bios from file? Also go to the update utility options and check Biod downgradable
