AVG FRee is one of the best FREE one. So there is a lot of viruses that it misses. (as I saw when migrating free to pro trial)

AVP Pro probably probably has a similar database as Norton or any major retail anti-virus.

And yup, ad-aware and spybot are the best one. (use them both)

Hello guys i have a problem...Dont know why, but the power4gear utility dont work on my S96S :( When i select the "Quiet office" profile, nothing happens (It dont turns the fan of). I have tried everything, but with no sucess. And when i select "Baterry Saving" profile, i get only 1:50 with all off (WiFi, BT, screen brightness at minimum). OMG! I am realy sad...
Is there anywhere an instruction how to install it correctly?
    Thanks

I was wondering, I saw on GenTechPC that the new S96S comes with built in 1GB of Turbo Memory. I remember some here are interested in this. I emailed Ken Lee for more information. Does anyone have any information about this? Is this the half size that will fit? Or is this a integrated 1GB of flash? I hope someone can shed some light on this Half Size Turbo memory thing because I can't find it for sale anywhere.

i cant get it to seem to do anything.
when i change the settings from like quiet office to performance to any other one, i get the on screen display that it should have changed (in the top left corner of my screen), but there is no difference in the laptop or anything... is there something else i have to install or set up to get it to work correctly?
    thanks!

    Hey thekaz,

You can check out GenTechPc( www.1toppc.com). It lets you choose if you want N or not. Also the turbo memory is now built in along with bluetooth. I am still trying to confirm if Asus finally released the half size Turbomemory. They have good prices and Ken Lee is nice to deal with.

See now this is the part I don't understand is that I have never heard of "half" height turbo memory until reading about it in this forum ?
I did get an intel turbo memory card from the last channel seminar but it is exactly the same size as the new intelwireless N card....
The S96S specs say that you have your choice of either card BUT not both :(
Has any one had their S96S totally apart to see if it has two PCIe ports ?

:( maybe I will have to wait for a S37S cuase it's specs say yes for both at the same time....

Yes, there are two PCIE ports. One is full size (Intel 4695 AGN is occupying it) and another half size. It is hidden by the side of the case. Half size is mostly Asus proprietary. So far they have not release the turbo memory. But accordding to Ken Lee of GentechPc, the new S96S already has built-in Bluetooth and 1gb of turbomemory (not the half heigh). This is a good laptop, don't get me wrong. The half height turbomemory is also used in the C90 which asus has not released yet.

For those having issues with a Bios Upgrade - I have a solution.
The latest AsusUpdate Flash Utility for this notebook (which appears on Intel website when choosing Vista as the OS) does not work. Neither does the DOS Utility called AFUDOS. The previous Windows Flash Utility, 2.18, won't update the Bios either - BUT the DOS Utility will. This is the DOS Utility for the Z96J/S96J Series called AFLASH2.exe.

Boot from a USB Jump Drive, and include the AFLASH2.exe utility and the Bios update for S96S ( 0113.ROM ). Executing the AFLASH2.exe utility will upgrade the BIOS without issue. This must be done from a DOS Prompt at boot.

The AFLASH2.EXE Utility can be found on the Official Intel Driver page for the S96J Series by downloading the Bios ZIP File which includes the aflash2exe utility:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

    The latest BIOS Update for the S96S is here;
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!

Making a USB Jump drive bootable is pretty easy. Just google it and you'll find a few utilities out there (google usbmemkeyboot.zip and the first link that appears download it from that site, install, run file, it will ask for MSDOS Files)
If you don't have these files, create a folder and download all of these files from the Win98SE boot disk:
    http://www.allbootdisks.com/disk_contents/download/98.html
It will copy 3 files to the usb stick, command.com, IO.sys & MSDOS.sys
when it's done, copy the rest of the files from the 98SE bootdisk to usb stick - NOT overwriting these original 3 files.

    ** Note **

The BIOS will revert back to Factory Settings (TPM On & SATA set to AHCI so make sure to change back to IDE).

Cracking web passwords? You won't be able to do that with AirCrack as it is designed to crack WPA/WEP keys utilized by access points.

For XP, I don't think you'll be able to find drivers enabling monitor mode.
    http://www.wildpackets.com/support/downloads/drivers
At least these drivers don't seem to support it. Maybe the stock driver supports it by default and can be enabled but I couldn't find any information about this. airodump can't enable this mode for me in the windows distribution.

For Linux, the iwlwifi driver supports monitor mode, but at the moment only a few distributions include it. (Kanotix, Gentoo, etc.) It is not an easy task to install these drivers and certainly needs some knowledge.

And with the easy way you must be kidding. Cracking keys/passwords of access points is by no means easy and should only be done when your are assessing the security of your OWN network. You shouldn't tamper with other people's networks nor crack their passwords.

Guys, with which kind of LCD you've got your notebook and how are you satisified with it? Mine is a CMO N154I2 and it's so-so, my only woe is the viewing angles.

I'm just curious if the AUO or CPT one is better.

My friend and I both have the s96s. He as the AUO and I have the CMO. My screen looks brither his looks a little darker. That's the only difference I see. All settings are the same and same OS. He has a different webcam as me also. Both are sharp and clear. That's about it. Oh yea, btw, anyone have luck flashing the bios? Anyone heard about the half size robson memory?

I returned my s96s because of the teee noise. After the tech having no answer, and just the work around that can be found on here, i decided to go with another comp. After much research i realized alot of pcs have this same problem and i didnt want to risk getting another with the same issue.
I decided after years of being a pc user i was gonna get the macbook pro.
    I don't regret this choice.
having said that, i think this is a nice comp and if that problem doesnt bug you or the workaround is alright with you then this is definitely a keeper

Glad u like it :) . Good purchase!

I am probably not gonna return mine because the Tee noise is only audible when i put my ears near the keyboard(Using Rmclock w/ all the power states on, managing power with power4gear vista). But without Rmclocking running, it is a diff story as the tee noise is pretty much unbearable(litterally hurts my ears)

Yo, nothing major. make sure u go to bios and change the hard drive to run as IDE mode. It probably changed to AHCI when u flashed it with the new bios. IF u set your HD as IDE mode, it will load windows

scooberdoober, if gaming is a major priority, then i would look @ 8600GT or higher(eventhough 8600GT doesn't have the membandwith of 8800's or shader power). If u r a occassional gamer like me, then it is not that bad.

Hey guys , i wanna share this also. If u guys haven't tried the 158.45 from laptopvideo2go.com , TRY IT! because overclocking and powermizer works!. i haven't found any issues (if u r playing newer games like bioshock etc, then it is recommended that u use the latest driver)

I am running vista 32bit 158.45driver. overclocked the core to 529mhz and memory to 421mhz. stable. i ran the 3dmark 06 for fun and scored 2495 points--- and i found movie quality especially de-interlacing quality to be superb.

    peace out---

Yeah, I've concluded that the 8600GT is a minimum for me now. Not so much that I'm a big gammer, but I will play enough to need it, and I want to have as much power as possible so that I can still play on for some time in the future. I don't plan on buying another system for a long time, so I want all the power I can afford now.

If I want to really get gamming, I'll just get a console for that. Trying to keep up with computer gamming requirements is a form of financial masochism as far as I'm concerned! ;)

understood :). if u don't already know, there are lot of good choices for 8600GT depending on your budget.

    Asus v1s, v2s , c90,g1s
    Compal, sager NP2090
Dell 1520 (WARNING ! i am not a big fan of this notebook)
    apple macbookpro

Thanks for the recomendations. I've been checking them all out for a while now, it's enough to drive you nuts!

I really need to keep it under $1,500, so that rules out the Mac, and all of the Asus ecxept for the c90 I think. The 2090 looks nice! Dell has really got me on the run with all of the screen and CS issues.

Yep, a changelog would be nice. v117 -> v205 is a pretty big jump, maybe a lot of things has been added/improved.

For me it improved battery life a little bit, I get 2:40 instead of 2:15. Apart from that, everything seems to be like it was.

By the way, I have successfully flashed mine with the ASUS Update Tool provided on Intel's download page. Before that I tried to flash from a bootable USB drive (DOS), and when it hung at Reading file 0% it scared the living #@!- out of me. Anyway, I guess it is not compatible with USB drives.
