Another question: Will i be able to uprade the C90S with a penryn?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
nope. the only possible penryn compatible chipset for a notebook right now is the santa rosa one.
even that probably wont take on a full fledged quad core penryn, its probably going to get a cut down dual core version.
A C2D will hold its own for a long time tho so I wouldnt worry about it. By the time a C2D becomes the lacking part of your notebook it will be time to get a new one anyways. -
And a c80, would this one be upgradeable with a penryn?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
we dont know what chipset it will use yet. My guess is the bearlake chipset wich is indeed ok for the penryn, thats one reason I wanted to maybe wait for it, but with no release date/details or anything I decided the C90 is better for me, plus I think I will enjoy the 15" size more than 17".
It is to my knowledge tho that the penryn will be on a new socket all together for the full blown version of it, but that they have plans to make a cut down version that will fit on the 775 socket. Thats what bearlake would be for.
More info will definitly unfold as time passes. -
anyone know if the c90s will run the new conroe processor's being released july 22nd with all the processors cuts
the e6850, e6750, etc - same socket, but 1333mhz fsb
think it would work, just downgrade the fsb? or would it get full potential? -
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I dont think you understand the Penryn cpu is a quad core cpu, but I heard that there was a possbility of a dual core version of it being made for the 775 socket.
edit: ahh my mistake im getting penryn confused with wolfdale/yorkfield the desktop version. penryn is the moble version and a dual core (much like what I said it will be cut down to dual core) but wolfdale is one that would go into a c80 if anything because its the desktop version.
We would both be wrong in this case, penryn will be made dual core for notebooks with a quad core version for DTR's
but wolfdale is the dual core desktop version and yorkfield the quadcore.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Core_2#Penryn -
penryn is simply a 45nm processor, in both dual core and quad core
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
Well, Penryn won't work on the C90 ever, seeing as it is a mobile proc
-
very true Wolfdale and Yorkfield are the core 2 duo and quad core desktop processors 45nm processors

hey i got a question: i noticed that asus only will allow their program to overclock to a max of 2.93ghz and 1279mhz fsb
but it sais that the 2.93ghz cpu (x6800) cannot be overclocked with their program, since it will be unstable
so wouldnt getting the e6700 and overclocking it to 2.93 and 1279 be better then the x6800? (because the x6800 would stay at 1066mhz fsb)
also does the tdp stay the same with overclocking because in that case - the x6800 is 95w compared to the e6700 is 65w which is better battery life and if it stays that way even when overclocking, then saves battery too
or are there other programs that will allow for overclocking on the x6800? dont know much about overclocking.... -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
Hey, I answered the question in the other thread.
Summary, E6700 is "faster," but the Extreme is more powerful. -
yes, but can the x6800 be overclocked in the c90 with another program or is overclockin stuck to the asus's program? cuz if it can, then it would stay faster.
and does the tdp change with overclocking cuz if it doesn't, then battery life is better on the e6700, yet can be faster then the x6800
any info will always help! (i pm'd you alex) -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
To answer your thoughts succinctly: Don't Overclock the Extreme if you have it. Wait for the price cuts, buy it then and be happy. As a matter of fact, the E6700 is more than powerful enough to not bottleneck any of your equipment (if it doesn't bottleneck a single Desktop nVidia 8800 [SLi is a different story], then it won't bottleneck any mobile equipment.)

My card was charged on Friday or Saturday!
-
What date did you order and where did you order from?
-
btotech has the c90s listed as in stock
http://btotech.com/store/products/laptops/asus/c90s/c90s.htm
chris -
was told my gentech order would ship sometime friday (ordered yesterday, sunday)
config ordered however was this:
No cpu
no ram
no hard drive
only thing added was wireless and 3 year warranty
they said since i didnt add any extra parts besides the wireless, it should ship alot sooner (meaning i would go with the first shipments of preorders) because there either getting them today or tomorrow -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I had a feeling they would get them today being that its east coast based. Gentech has them tomorrow!
your setup is similar to mine kickace, we should have a build off, like we used to do with our rifles in the marines.
get me and you, one big table and see who can put the c90 together faster
I got my wireless ap today too, it was not supposed to be here for like 2 more days so thats good timing. I have alot of stuff I need to d/l when I get the c90. -

Blindfolded too!

even though all signs point to no so far -
im hoping the bios will recoginze all 4gb of memory and just need a 64bit windows to use it all....instead of 3gb regardless of which version windows -
I ordered mine June 13th or something from Gentech. I hope I get it by Friday.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
with luck maybe 3.25gb max thats still abit better than 3gb -
Yay! after a month of waiting it will finally be mine!!! i hope it will get here before friday, so that i can take it on a camping trip on sunday

Impressive from BTOTech, the only site on the internet that advertises them in stock! And they are on the other side of the country from the Distro center! I guess Eddie pulled some strings.
-
How come BTOtech lists that you can get either Robson or a Tv tuner? is it possible to have Robson on this chipset???
-
not that battery life is of any concern with this laptop, but would it be better just to live with 3gb? I imagine the machine will be supplying power to all 4gb
Nox -
So who's done some shopping around and can tell me how gentechpc.com's price for a complete C90 is compared to getting it barebones and buying the rest of the components from other (reputable) stores?
-
I think C90s battery is a point to take care of, with a Conroe processor 3GB of Ram and 8600M GT i think the c90s won't ber able to stay switched on for more than an hour and a half, so imagine it with 4gb of ram and if Asus wants a 8800M (that doesn't exist yet) 30 minutes will be more than incredible!!
xD -
-
BTW has anyone who order from bto heard anything from them or recieved a shipping notice? -
FWIW, I actually saved almost $200 by getting my parts off NewEgg.
-
Really? All the parts together only cost around $500-600, can you show the math?
-
These are based on btotech prices
Component - BTOtech Price - Newegg Price
E6320 - 199 - 165
E6420 - 219 - 186
E6600 - 249 - 223
E6700 - 349 - 318
Lesson: Difference $26-34. Reality... don't bother buying your own CPU. You lose dealer warranty as well. So spend the extra money.
Memory - BTOtech Price - Newegg Price
2GB (2x1GB)667 - 149 - ($80-100. $100 is for OCZ)
3GB (2+1GB)667 - 199 - ($120-$155. $155 is for OCZ)
Lesson: Difference is $45-80 dollars. Reality.... Buy your memory. You can choose a good brand and pay less and get lifetime memory warranty. (Note: Kingston is not a bad brand but it is not the best either)
HDD - BTOtech Price - Newegg Price
100GB 7200RPM - $139 - ($90-115)
160GB 5400RPM - $79 - ($95-150)
Lesson: If you gonna buy a 7200RPM Hdd... buy it yourself. Otherwise buy it from dealer.
Overall lesson... You can save $50-200 by buying some OEM component (Memory, HDD, Additional Battery, CPU) and shopping in places like newegg and others. But you should not bother with CPU purchase as you may not get the dealer warranty so pay the additional charge there.
Maybe I will do a GenTech comparison later. Until then... I hope someone with stock on their hand would be kind enough to post a review or preview or just something... cuz this wait for more information is really starting to be very annoying. -
i believe gentech is almost the same price or cheaper BUT if you don't get the cpu at biotech, the entire laptop is not covered
at gentech, whatever you don't get (i didnt get the cpu, memory, or hard drive) - wont be covered but everyting else will be so if you want to save even more money, say no to the memory/cpu/hard drive and buy elseware and just use the manufacturer warranty to cover any problems (the core 2 duo processors carry a 3 year warranty) -
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
I did the same with GenTech and to sum it all up, the advantages of buying from newegg (memory and proc were cheaper, the HDD I wanted wasn't carried) were devalued by having to pay shipping twice. At that point I was saving about 30 bucks and was willing to pay that for it all to come in the same box.
EDIT: Important note about the proc, I wanted AS5 on it, which costs a ton (35 bucks a tube) separately. (only 5 bucks from Gentech and free from BTOtech.) -
i have found that tube for around $5 alot of places, just ordered for $6.50 with free shipping

3.5gram Syringe is $5.99 + $3 shipping
12gram Syringe is 14.95 + $5 shipping
3.5gram is enough for 8 application on Intel C2D processor.
12gram is enough for 30 applications.

Alex, has your card been charged yet and have you been notified of any change in status with your order? Also, what specs did you order?
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
probably comes from me not knowing:
A) Where to shop (place sells in 20g tubes)
B) How much goes into an application (I knew it wasn't all 20g, but I thought 1g may be reasonable, now I know it is like 400mg) -

when you select shipping select first class mail - not ups ground (which in my experience, first class is faster anyway since it delivers saturday) -

I have never seen AS5 for 30$ have a link Alex? Infact only place I have was from one of the resellers charging 30$ to install AS5 with your notebook.
I saved money ordering my parts seperate aswell, but I also got stuff you cant even get with a configured install. Like a 250gb HDD. -
Shipping for all my stuff from NewEgg was only 11 bucks...(the E6600 is shipping for free right now)
-
-
AS5 is helps keep stuff cool right? how do you use it? where does it go? do u have to reapply it?
-
AS5 or any other thermal paste should be applied at less than .008 mm layer.. basically hairline thin layer to provide the best heat transfer. If you put too much paste between CPU & heat sink then you asking for hot processor issues.
As for you question on how to apply AS5. Visit http://www.arcticsilver.com/ins_route_step2intelas5.html

That MX1 stuff is pretty cheap on newegg btw if nobody has paste yet. Its supposed to be better than AS5, I doubt the difference is noticable but hey if you want to try something new.
-
But you are right about MX-1 it is very good but AS5 is just as good.
I hope that the Admin or Mods of forum Delete this thread on the day someone gets a C90S so that a fresh new thread of Offical C90 is born with discussion on cons and pros of owning a C90 rather than just speculation, rumors, waits, buying stuff etc. -
