    I got some transcend ram (2 x 2GB at 667 (5-5-5-15) )

Booted up fine, no mem test errors at all.

Sadly, and of course, windows only sees 2.87GB of RAM. CPU-Z sees all four gigs.

GPU, Video Card(I have a lot of problems while in-game with my card. It stops responding and resets.), and wireless drivers.

I'm quite horrible at finding the correct drivers and then installing them CORRECTLY.

Firstly never OC your card it isn't worth it with the DDR2 version as it will become too unstable even just a little over stock clocks.(not saying you are lol but I used to and found no point to it)
I use driver forceware version 162.18 it is by no means the newest and does not allow overclocking but is very stable and gives good performance for me. Find it at laptopvideotogo.com

What wireless card do you have I have Intel ProSet Wireless? If you do and have problems with this try in this order 1)unstalling the wireless connection from network connections, 2) then uninstall the drivers 3)then reset computer and 4 ) using "wired" internet connection go straight to intel's website and download the latest program and drivers - install. Voila should work(restart again if necessary)

BIOS mod for ASUS C90S for 1066Mhz Wolfdale?
Does anyone know if anyone can mod the BIOS for ASUS C90S to enable 1066Mhz FSB Wolfdale (45nm) CPUs, e.g E7200, E7300, E7400...

If I were to mod the BIOS myself, which tools are needed to inject CPU-ids for 45nm CPUs?

If installing a E7300 ES with latest 1002 BIOS gives "CPU microcode load error" on POST... the CPU is correctly identified, but CPU microcode error halts the boot process... any advice would be appreciated?
    .......
    Later:
I was able to find the right tools to inject an updated CPU-list extracted from the AsRock Conroe945-DVI beta BIOS 1.91 available from a German website.

The updated CPU list is injected into and replaces the CPU-list in the standard Asus BIOS 1002. I then boot with a flash-usb drive with the modded bios named c90s.rom in the root of the drive. Power up and press ALT+F2 to start auto-recovery flashing using EZ-flash which will search optical and USB-drives for a bios file (c90s.rom).

Reboot, enter BIOS, load setup defaults, save.

Tested working with E5200 and E7300 ES.

PM me for a copy of the updated BIOS, I call it 1003 or go to
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/showthread.php?t=217199

edit: see more and download modded bios here:

    OK, here's an odd question...

Does anyone know if one of the mini PCI-e SSDs will work in the open PCI-e slot inside the C90s.

    Cheers,

Intel are releasing a Q7500 at 2.66ghz and 800mhz front side bus with 2mb lvl2 cache. I think this lineup is closest C90S will get to quad.

They are very customisable. I doubt you can buy a C90S anymore but the C90P is for sale at gentechpc.com and excaliberpc.com. It is the same as the C90S but gives full support to 1333fsb wolfdales eg the e8xxx even the q9650 works in it as it is equipped with the newer P35 chipset vs the 945 chipset found in the C90S. And will see all 4GB of ram vs 3GB-3.5GB seen on the C90S

Problem is even though both are quite untouchable CPU wise in the 15" laptop range it is lacking GPU wise. That may very well change however and plenty of people who own the C90S are very much into modding it to accept better GPU's (as well as CPU's) than the supported 8600M GT's such as the 9600M GT. If ati's 4xxx series of cards fit into the C90S/P then it would be a good buy.

Otherwise for best bang for buck 15' performance as of now check out asus' G50V range. Not as customizable in some ways and has weaker CPU options but its 9800M's will perform very much better in games. Also allows 2 internal HDD in raid 0.

    Hope this helps

C90P doesnt support DDR3 memory?? are there big different between ddr2 and ddr3? It seems more and more laptop have ddr3 nowadays with just a little more pricey than ddr2 laptops

It doesn't support DDR 3 im afraid. Yes true all new laptops are equipped with DDR3, RAM speed shouldn't bottleneck a midrange laptop anyways so DDR 2 is sufficient for a few years. The bottleneck will be the GPU, this is the case even in laptops/desktops equipped with more powerful GPU's.

I'm having a lot of issues with the ITE Remote - ITECIR drivers. I know that it has been a huge problem but I can't seem to find a good driver to fix my problem. Constant issues with blue screen restarts. This began following a reinstall of windows.

If anyone has any tips/links I would appreciate it!

Download ITE driver 5.0.1.2 from http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us and run setup.

I downloaded this driver and I haven't had a single BSOD ever since!

    hello all,
    i know there's some c90 guru around :)
    so i ask my question:
i was on stage preparing a show, i was testing some different resolution's
for the secondary screen ( eg : video projector @ 1280x1024 on the VGA output) everything was fine (no O/C mode ..no heat no big cpu/Gpu usage)
until i decide to change the refresh rate of the monitors... the main laptop monitor allow only 59hz or 60 hz... but when i tried 75hz on the secondary (video beamer) the Laptop freez and i need to hard reboot...
and guess what!! now when i boot the computer the main monitor of the c90s
stay black (no bios/ no logo / nothing),the hardrive is fine (blinking led and tested on a another pc) the cpu and fan's seems ok
when i open it...there's no burned component :)
so if anyone know a tip to solve this!!!! or to identify the problem
    i'll be very gratefull
    thanks
    C

I replaced the original E6600 with a E7400 (after updating the bios with the 1003 version that came on the first pages of this discussion),but now when I unplug the power and reconnect the pc freezes and I have to shut it down brutally! Do you know how to fix this? :(

    Hi,

I hope this thread is still a bit alive? I'm looking for spare parts for the Asus C90, especially a video card replace. Where can I buy one? (e.g. a 8600 GT 512MB replacement)

you can get them on ebay.
I used a 8600GT card that was intended for a ACER laptop, it was 80$ cheaper, only diff was that the mounting holes were smaller, but was easily able to get around that. It has been working for two years like this.
    good luck,

    c90s

    10/4/2007 - ordered date
    02/15/2011 - dead date

    1472 days or
    4 years 11 days or
    127,180,800 seconds or
    2,119,680 minutes or
    35,328 hours or
    210 weeks (rounded down)

i got it originally from excaliberpc for $979.

just for fun i divided the total hours of ownership with the cost to get this:

    979/35328 = 0.02771173007246376811594202898551

    :D

in comparison, my compal cl50 (vendor gamepc/model gpnm2) is still kicking:

    7/30/2003 - ordered date
    2/15/2011 - today date

    2757 days or
    7 years, 6 months, 16 days or
    238,204,800 seconds or
    3,970,080 minutes or
    66,168 hours or
    393 weeks (rounded down)

i got it for $1,575.78 from gamepc.com. the battery never worked. i sent it back twice and both time the battery would be ok for several days but then dies. so i gave up on rma'ing the battery back.

what's remarkable is the cl50 runs nearly 24/7 while i use the c90s every now and then. yet after 7 years, cl50 still running and only after 4 years the c90s kicked the bucket. :p

Hi all. I've been a long time observer but first time poster on this forum, and I'd just like to say a massive thanks to all those who've publicised some very neat updgrades for this little mean-machine that I've had for 4+ years now.
I've only really gone as far as installing an E7500 and clocking it to a nice and stable 3.2GHz, but am now seriously considering an ATI or Nvidia GPU upgrade as I'm still stuck with my 8600GT (DDR2). This runs extra hot now that my CPU barely generates any heat (and thus fans stay at v.low speed) so I think a fan mod and some panel drilling will be on the cards when I find the time.
The laptop itself has really performed for me as I take it with me to music gigs, either for music or for VJing. It tends to get very hot in such places and suffers lots of abuse in the form of audio vibrations and 'moist' atmospheres! It's hung on me a couple of times but luckily not at crucial moments and I have to say it's served me very well with no real need for upgrading yet.

Anyway, I would like to know what kind of GPU upgrade would be cost-effective and keep my lappy running cooler than my current card. I hear that ATI seem to generate a lot less heat and would consider a 3670 or maybe a 4x70 although I'm not really so bothered about GPU power as the heat, plus costs are still a bit high. Would consider a 9600M GS or GT if they run cooler as well. I'm just after a reasonable, cool card and not to bothered about gaming.

I would be glad to hear what processor you think is best and work and also what video card. For the RAM i'm on the 2X2 GB DDR2 from G-skill and i've also a notebook cooler so i don't really fear the heat.
    Thanks in advance !

    Hello JontheKiller.

If you want the best performance period on the CPU front get a E7600. Use throttlestop to force the max multiplier and undervolt simultaneously and then use windows task manager to make it run automatically as soon as windows starts. Then you can forget about it.

Clockgen works fine with the C90S for fsb overclocking so you can then find the max stable fsb with that (between 300-310 I think) you can probably set that up to start with windows too if you are 100% stable.

On the GPU front the MXM III cards are too hot and too much hassle to fit into the C90S. The very best card is the mxm II 2.1 version of the 4670 512mb GDDR3 card which is exclusively used in the MSI EX625. Unfortunately this makes it to say the least hard and perhaps costly to get hold of. I therefore would get the 4670 1GB GDDR2 instead. The fans will shoot to full speed however with the new card installed so you will need a fan mod. Using a dual desktop pci fan controller proceed to tap the 12V source (located near the gpu fan socket plug on the motherboard) directly and wire the pci fan controller up. Once finished you will have a wire hanging out of the back but easy to simply plug the pci fan controller in and out!

Here is a link to the C90S 9600M GT upgrade thread and my post in it regarding my fan mod. A good read. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/316079-nw-upgrade-c90s-9600m-gt-512mb-ddr3-fixed-125.html post number 1248 on page 125 if this doesn't take you straight to it. You will notice the copper sinks that is the only visible difference between C90P and C90S the 12V source is in the same location (where yellow wire is soldered) remember to earth to the top of the power connector as it is metal :) first solder then hot wood glue! Also you will see info pertaining to better fans and see that I stripped out the mesh on the vents for better airflow.

Bluray drive; best out there is the Panasonic UJ 220 or 225 IDE ATA. Lets you read and write blurays!

    Hope this helps.
