Brand-X, we all love brand-X. Its a real guessing game, unless you take the model number or any other identifiable marking and try to track down what brand it really is and then go to the naughty or nice list and check it twice. I'd say 60%/40% for it working. You really won't know if it works unless you try it or its on the list and even if it is on the list there is a chance it will not work properly. We love brand-X, its a fun guessing game, about how fun and finicky the older C90S chipset id. Good luck!

I've had my C90S for quite a while now but something has been really bothering me about it, especially recently. It frequently just crashes to a black screen for no apparent reason whatsoever, and then after a little while it'll restart.

These crashes seem to occur most frequently when the computer is idle, defragmenting, or running certain games. Any idea how I might be able to fix this?

Call Asus support, they will go through a bunch of trouble shooting steps with you and will eventually determine the video card is dying....just a hunch, I've had the black screen of death on three prior notebooks.

    Sounds like hardware problems...

If it crashes on idle, I don't suppose that it's because of insufficient power (i.e., the 90W adapter being insufficient as per other C90 problems). Insufficient power could cause it to crash like that.

Usually the RAM incompatibilities cause BSODs rather than black screens & reboots... so probably it's not that. I'm not sure (C90 users should know) whether the RAM incompatibilities show up at a memory test... (memtest86+)

Another possible cause is overheating? What are the temperatures / do the fans work properly?

Yeah overheating definitely sounds like a good possibility. I doubt its the power pack because then it would happen more at load than at idle, plus your battery will keep the unit on even if the ac adapter is not up to par.

Try to toss a fan under you unit and see if you have any crashes for awhile, thats the easiest way to test the heat problem.

Does anyone know what are the best graphics drivers for the C90S, other than the stock ones? I was looking to upgrade, but from the forums on laptopvideo2go.com I’m at a stand still between getting the 174.93 or 174.74 or 174.31. Does anyone have advice for successful drivers? I have the GeForce 8600M GT DD2 512MB version.

I'm currently using 174.31 release from ASUS, downloaded from laptopvideo2go.com, and so far everything is running great on my 8600M GT DDR2.

167.62 here. With fans forced through folding @home it stays a 96C rather than 102C on every other drivers. When it's above 100C it tends to crash

Hello. I'm new on this forum. My name is Rafał and I live in Poland.

    I have C90S (6600 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 8600M 512MB DDR3).

ntune displays my GPU core clock as 500MHz and GPU sharers clock as 1000MHz, but when I'm playing a game (The Witcher) and I have rivatuner running with GPU info, the chart says the clocks are 540/1080 MHz. Is it normal or do I have a problem?

Little off topic, but I figured this was a good place to ask. My current notebook is out of commission ( Link) and I was looking around at what new notebooks are available.

Does anyone know if there are plans, or a release date for the next line of C90S type barebone notebook? I love the whole concept of the C90S, but it just feels like a new release should be due soon. It's been out for a year or so, and I really don't want to dump cash into something thats getting an overhaul soon. It seems pretty solid right now (besides a few ram quirks), but I'd love to see it opened up to the EXX50 CPUs with a faster FSB.

hey guys i just found this product at frys and was wondering if its worth the purchase, its a rhino 150w inverter, since i didn't buy the A.C for a car i could buy this and put it in my car and just plug the regular A.C to it and have my laptop on the go, it is also on sale at frys right now for 15 i think when its posted at 25 on the website, but they have 3 different watt, 150, 200, and 400, do you guys think the 150 is enough for me to power the laptop?

    Listen to this:

I have my computer setup on my table/couch area with the battery pack on the couch. I feel asleep on the couch on Friday morning after the night out and I woke up the next morning with some blisters on my back. I really had no idea how I could have got burnt during the night. So today, I was doing some investigating into the problem and decided to check the size of the burn, which has a clear corner wound that I thought came from a table. The batter pack surprisingly fit perfectly to the burn on my back.

So, as a warning, do not fall asleep on your battery pack as it will produce enough heat to give you 2 degree burns through two shirts.

    Hank,

Here is the thread about the 902 bios. Ken made an ISO image of it that you can burn to a CD and use to update your bios under DOS. That is how I suggest to do it. Look at post number 35 for the info.

On the topic of bios for the C90S. I haven’t been having any problems with my C90S and I have the original stock bios. Should I update it, what do I get out of an update? Is it even worth the effort?

There is always a risk of a bios update going wrong (ask me how I know) so if everything is working as it should I would leave it for now. There isn't a huge benefit or anything to make it that worthwhile.

    Nightstalker???? lol..

Do you not have a spare CD lying around? Ideally you should burn the .iso to a CDR/RW or DVD and boot from it. You should be able to use it from a usb flash drive if you can find a way to "burn" the .iso to it. I've never done that so I don't know if it's easy or not.

If you can burn it to the flash drive then it SHOULD work exactly the same, but I can't guarantee anything so do it at your own risk.

    EDIT:

Another option would be to use ISObuster to open the .iso file and then copy the entire content of it to the flash drive. That should work as well, but again, still no guarantees.

Ok, no i actually dont have any cd's, i have a stack of dvd's. I'd imagine they will work the same?

I would rather us e a cd tho but yeah i dont have.

Just wanted to bump this point along, theres a psu chip located under the gpu heatsink runner. I had 1 of 2 screws come lose and the chip popped out .....

Just a suggestion to randomly check all screws that are maintainable, as the fans imo. worked this screw out

Well...I agree with swoley2k 99%. I found out about the C90S last summer when looking for a laptop to buy for college, and when I found the C90S I was...in love. I bought the laptop from Gentech and was in love with it at first. Then came the first time in my life that I realized that Asus sucks, there support is horrible, it’s as if they abandoned the C90S. And it is true, the only reason Asus has done anything for the C90S is because of Ken. However it’s not just this laptop that Asus as been lacking on, I’ve noticed in whole that their quality isn't what it used to be several years ago.

What really makes me hate the C90S are the following several things. The fact that it really can't handle a desktop CPU (because it under clocks it by default), All the stuff everyone else hates about, what I really hate is what Asus and the C90S promised to the consumer it doesn’t deliver (just look at the list on the Asus website and you can say “not true, or that doesn’t work”)....don’t even get me started about the bizarre video card situation. Also WTF is with the ram situation, a "fully upgradable gaming laptop" limited to 4GIGS!!!! WTF is wrong with Asus, using obsolete chipsets in an UPGRADABLE GAMING LAPTOP....

Well the C90S has been a learning situation for me. Maybe when the 5th generation of the C90 comes out it might be successful and I might consider looking at it, but until then...I think I’m going to have to leave the realm of buying Asus laptops. :(. Get an IBM laptop and leave gaming for a real desktop.

Edit: Actually the one thing I definitely love about the C90S is the laptop chassis, its pretty leet, just needs a 4 megapixel webcam then it would be set.

Also what is going to happen to the C90S when the C90P comes out (if it does), will the C90S become the “cousin no one talks about”…

I thought C90 posts had died down a bit until now really because the C90P is just around the corner. I haven't been posting because I really haven't been playing around with my C90S because of a temp ban on notebooks at work because of security stuff. I have a x38/Q6700/64bit desktop at home, no reason to run the C90S, but this should change back to normal again sometime next month.

Under the touchpad software its the sensitivity setting. Or under windows the scroll speed of the cursor something like that.

Its really easy to find just poke around abit.

Good afternoon and Happy Memorial Day.

I recently began playing Age of Conan and I'm continuously running out of Ram when I'm playing the game. It definitely takes a lot of memory to actually run the game, so I'm looking to upgrade from 2gb - 3gb of ram on my Asus C90S. (info in my sig).

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit as of now and I have downloaded the newest sp1. Could anyone help me out and link to the ram I need to get and the process to do so? I poked around a bit on the forums about the process, but I honestly could not turn up any good results.

    Thanks!
