Best of your knowledge? What knowledge is this? It was made clear to you by who? Please provide proof of false advertising, as Asus could be held accountable. If you are right, then fine, but please provide the source and evidence. This is how rumors start and confusion ensues, don't do that.
I have the G73 in my hands right now. I can say with conviction that the fans ARE NOT taking in air from the bottom, there aren't even any vents on the bottom except right above where the DDR3 Ram is, which is substantially far away from either fans. There is only one place it can get air, from above.
Unlike the pictures you've seen, if you actually have seen the G73, it would be made clear to you early on that there is a mesh grill above the keyboard, right above the fans, just as Asus advertised.

I have Fraps running on Crysis Warhead, 1920*1080 Gamer Settings with 4AA in the second map.
- Used the AMD tool, 749.99/1100 clocks. Holding steady almost an hour now. Seems stable so far.
I noticed I get a steady 25-29FPS. While never goes above it much, occasionally 34, but rarely dips below 25. When you encounter a lot of burning wood and smoke, framerate dipped to 18-19.
I turned off 4AA, and the same scene with fire and smoke went up to 29FPS again. Without 4AA it's a steady 30-40FPS usually even when under fire by 5-8 guys at a time with foliage being destroyed.
Look safe to you all? I've never OC a laptop GPU before as the cooling was never stellar on my previous notebooks. -
Well i've been following and contributing to the other thread since day 1 and never has there been proof that there are any vents in the front.. not from the photos, not from when iata went to ces, nor from the resellers..
all of us(forum members) had assumed that the intake was the large bottom vent for both the fans.. but as seen in some of the photos ken had posted before release the gpu and cpu fans face in opp directions.. which means 1 pulls air from the bottom and one from above.. and the idea was put forward that the tiny vent near the cpu area was used to de-compress the cpu fan which is pulling air from above the mobo..
thats is what i meant to the best of my knowledge(forum rumours and gossip)
ziddy123 you're one of the few lucky people who actually have this awesome machine .. take a look at your machine,do you see any vents in the front??
why dont you start up something like furmark+prime95 to stress the cpu and gpu and use some smoke or a small piece of tissue and see where the air is going in.. -
Well, I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan, so will have to wait til May to get mine...eagerly awaiting a nice indepth review. I am really interested in how the cooling is as it seems they have crammed a ton of stuff in this beast and from what I've read "could be wrong" it would seem that pulling air from over the keyboard would be suspect.
-
Dude I just wrote it above. You don't need tissue, you can feel the air being taken in on the vents right above the keyboard. The entire strip where the power key straight across to the 3 buttons for LED/Turbo/S, it is very fine mesh grill. I'll say it clearly, there isn't any air being taken on the bottom. I found a small vent but from diagram looks to be where the Chipset is and it's passive cooling vent. No air is being sucked in. I can feel with my hands air being taken in from above on both left and right side. I can't make this any clearer.
It is as Asus advertised. The cool air coming up above the keyboard is being sucked down into the fans and out the back. It's EXACTLY as they advertise.
- I may come off a little blunt here, but don't expound with statements like possessing knowledge and being made clear without clear testimony and evidence. -
Well thanks for clearing that up
Although i still dont see how its as Asus advertised it.. if you saw the vid of the CES keynote or the following pic, you can see that they advertised it as pulling air from the front.. atleast thats the impression that me and many others made of it..
but no point arguing, i shouldnt keep you away from you beast of a machine..
-
I see the air floating above the keyboard and then being sucked down into the fans and out the back. That's what is happening with my G73.
Of course you are using a promotional picture that is used to make it clearly understandable without thinking about it. But in the end, what is happening in the picture is what is happening with notebook.
- Do you also believe the fan units are right underneath the keyboard as the promotional diagram has? The fans are above the keyboard and sticks back into the large back piece behind the screen...That's a diagram not a photo. The vents are a good inch behind the display, it's significantly further back.
- Again I just want to make this clear, not to be a jerk.
- Once you see the fine mesh grill for yourself, you will be impressed. It looks really great, very stylish. Very fine so it looks great, but it's also very fine to keep out the dust I suspect. -
-
I don't think it would be pointless. Because the bottom of the laptop still gets warm. So absorbing the heat from the bottom and sent outward would be helpful probably.
But so far I don't think you'll need it. I have the GPU O/C by 50 mhz playing Crysis Warhead, and fans aren't screaming yet. -

How about people who pre-ordered this superb laptop give us an indication where they live, as I live overseas it would help me to know that I am not alone. Anyone living in Mauritius?

Hi Everyone
Just pre-ordered through Gen-tech! I am probably the biggest computer noob that is gonna own one of these things (never personally owned a computer) but I am not a caveman and do have a little experience over the years using my room mates and friends PCs to surf the net and load up my ipod... Anyways Im gonna try to learn on my own by reading and not asking too many dumb questions but this is my 1st post so give me a pass on this one lol
Question #1
Is the G73JH relatively user friendly? As a novice will I have much trouble playing games, and getting them to perform at or near their full potential
Question #2 (noob question)
How is "ASUS" pronounced? I wanna be able to brag about this thing to my friends without sounding like a total tool. lol
Thanks in advance guys! These forums have been very helpful in my search for a great Gaming & Entertainment notebook. -
This is stable. 799/1200 was not as stable, but then I had some other programs doing stuff in the background. But played Crysis for an hour with these settings, no hiccups. But this O/C is not permanent. Once shutdown reverts back to original clocks.
-
Yes Windows 7 is the most user friendly Windows I've used so far. It's easy to use, very dynamic, multi tasking is a breeze with the G73. This is a great computer as a first one.
My first was an AMDK6/with generic 2D+3Dfx Voodoo 3D card with Windows 95. Amazing your first is the G73!
But this machine is complete overkill for browsing the web and uploading to your iPod. The G73 can handle any video editing, photohop, audio production, video encoding you throw at it. Actually for encoding, Nvidia CUDA is better as ATi for whatever reason refuses to update DXVA compatibility for 16 reference frames, still stuck on 4 (BluRay 1080 is 4 Reference, but if you use x264 to encode up to 16 reference, L5.1). Seems to be a driver issue than hardware. -
I was looking at the Alienware m11x but by the time I started customizing it was gonna cost me around $1100 and then I discovered the G73JH and it was love at first sight! 1600 is more than I planned on spending but after three days of comparing prices to specs it seems like an amazing deal! Plus I prefer the understated "stealth bomber" look to some of the other flashy Gaming notebooks that I saw. -
Is anyone going to post a formal review on this beast soon?
I think mine is going to be shipped on 17th Feb + a couple of days for customerisation..... then waiting for custom to clear for import to Australia.
Looks like the earliest I will get it is late Feb/Early March -

Thanks

Any lucky owners have ran Furmark yet, im interested on seeing how this new cooling setup will handle it.

Hey folks I'm new 'round these parts. I'm about to order my A2 once the bank opens tomorrow and I can deposit a few checks. I'm not a heavy gamer (Fallout 3, Diablo2 (and hopefully 3), Mass Effect). I mostly use my current desktop for my 3D animation work. I use Zbrush and Maya mostly. I'm getting this laptop because ZBrush is actually more RAM intensive than graphics intensive and this computer has plenty of power in both areas
Anyway I'm not new to computers but I am new to the concept of modding, overclocking, etc. I just use computers how they come. I had a couple quick questions.
1. To the people posting their temperatures, am I reading that right? 95c?! As in Celsius?! Near boiling point?! Is that normal?
2. What is actually getting hot? The video card? Because as I said, the programs I use are actually relatively easy on the video card. They suck up RAM though. And the only time the processor MIGHT be strained is during rendering.
Anyway, thanks for all the info so far. I've been lurking this thread for a while and it's been very helpful. -
-
There is a discussion about 5 pages back from the last page in the main Asus G73 thread. 90+ is hot but within spec. Read the other thread for more info. -

But this thing does not feel 95C on the bottom. You can place the underside of your arm on the bottom, always sensitive that area, without qualms. In fact it feels more like 30C, 86 Fahrenheit. It's not hot at all. -
I was thinking maximum would be around 85C, kinda disappointing. -
I don't think Justin played a game and then checked the temperature. Maybe he did, but idling is around 65C for me.

Here's an example of what might happen with the LCD closed.

I was hoping to upgrade my video card and get something smaller with the G73. I guess it's a Sager now after all. -
Almost ready to order my new G73JH, a few final questions on config.
Firstly, let me thank Vicious, Ziddy and 0100 for your posts. You guys convinced me that this is the machine to get. Based on your recommendations, am ordering from Gentech.
Would really appreciate if you could tailor your advice to me: I am a newbee who would rather pay a few dollars extra and wait longer for shipment than have to deal with doing my own upgrades, applying my own paste, etc.
1. Should I get a dead pixel warranty? (standard/30 day/1 year)?
2. Thermal paste: I will never apply my own thermal compound. For me, is stock OEM really the way to go? I did read the earlier posts (thanks Vicious) where you said save $, but is there really no substantial cooling boost? If not stock, is ICD the way to go?
3. I was going to get 2 SSDs in Raid 0, but I read Generally Raid 0 (stripping) is faster, as the data is spread across both drives. but in the case of SSD drives the RAID function does support TRIM which is really required to keep SSD drives operating a peak efficiency.
Is this correct? If so, should I get 1 SSD (160G) + the 7200 SATA (no Raid, of course)?
I dont know enough to install my own 3rd rabbit ear and want to make sure I have ability to upgrade to 2 drives
4. Optical drive? (Which one is A and B you refer to in earlier posts?) Does A=8X DVDRW DL and B= 4X Blu-Ray Read/DVDRW? What about the 4X Blu-Ray Re-Writer/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive?
5. Should I get the 802.11 Wireless a/b/g/n or the Intel Pro/Wireless 5300 a/b/g/n?
Thanks in advance! -
-
Ziddy...are you overclocking at all with that idle temp? or is that at all standard clock settings? 65c seems kinda warm for an idle temp too. I'm curious as to why everyone is saying this thing stays so cool...it seems like there is a lot of conflict among the temperatures that we've seen thus far...
-
1. Should I get a dead pixel warranty? (standard/30 day/1 year)?
No, I believe it's a waste of money. You will not even notice 1 dead pixel.
2. Thermal paste: I will never apply my own thermal compound. For me, is stock OEM really the way to go? I did read the earlier posts (thanks Vicious) where you said save $, but is there really no substantial cooling boost? If not stock, is ICD the way to go?
Cooling system is well designed in this laptop so it's your preference. Honestly, I recommend getting a thermal paste but as long as you're not going to boil this laptop you'll be fine.
3. I was going to get 2 SSD’s in Raid 0, but I read “Generally Raid 0 (stripping) is faster, as the data is spread across both drives. but in the case of SSD drives the RAID function does support TRIM which is really required to keep SSD drives operating a peak efficiency.”
It's your personal preference, but I recommend 1SSD + 1HDD. You have higher chance of losing your stuff if you enable Raid 0 (I have a back-up external HDD so I'm doing Raid 0) It's really easy to swap out one HDD and change to SSD later, so don't worry about it. There are many guides out there.
4. Optical drive? (Which one is “A” and “B” you refer to in earlier posts?) Does A=8X DVDRW DL and B= 4X Blu-Ray Read/DVDRW? What about the 4X Blu-Ray Re-Writer/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive?
A1= BluRay
A2= DVD RW
Blu-Ray Re-Writer is an option, if you want that you can customize it.
5. Should I get the 802.11 Wireless a/b/g/n or the Intel Pro/Wireless 5300 a/b/g/n?
802.11 Wireless a/b/g/n is good enough because there are only 2antennas in G73Jh models. -
I really think that no matter where you're getting it, you're going to be thrilled with this laptop. The numbers are already exciting. -
Just out of curiousity, does it matter that the G73 uses an LED screen, and that this information regrds LCD screens? -
