I'm trying to find a place to custom order the G73JH in Canada. Anyone knows where I can find that? Thanks!

guess this is th version that'll show up at newegg, amazon, etc
    wrong photo btw(i hope!!)..

oops posted in owners lounge, sorry meant to post in other thread..

My idling is much lower than that even. I turned on my G73 at about 8:30 this morning, and have done NO gaming or ran any programs. I have only been browsing on the internet. Here is a quick iphone pic of what my temps are doing after 4 hours of internet use.

BS about not using a laptop with the lid closed. Somehow a blanket got put on it and it was still OK (at least for as far as I read). I have been using my work laptop with the lid closed for years and placing an external monitor right on top of the laptop. My coworker started doing the same after some time and neither of us has had any problems. I also leave it running 24 hours a day during my 5 day workweek because I am always downloading something. Only turn it off when I take it home for my 2 days off. Absolute BS.

Well the issue seems to be that the intake for the fans is through the keyboard. If that's the case, then running it closed would be a bad idea.

NCIX is selling the A1 configuration - you could always ask them to customize it and see what they say.

I have to know what the specs are for your work laptop that is "years" old?

You have no idea what programs the guy is going to run while his lid is closed. And certainly don't lead people to believe they can close the lid on a machine like the one in the title of this thread, load a monitor on it, and go about their business, all day long doing work, running programs, and playing games. Did you not click that link to see what could happen?

I'm sure it's fine if all you are doing is downloading from the net, checking emails and maybe running an AS400 green screen emulator. But certainly not for the things that the people in this forum do with their notebooks. Wow, you're going to cause a lot of damage that will not be covered by warranty.

    0100,

Could you run a game or bench and then snap a pic of those temps again?

    Thanks,

You're missing the point. It's not about the blanket or whatsoever, but that LCDs are heat sensitive. Since heat dissipates through the keyboard for some models, and LCDs are heat sensitive, LCDs can get damaged especially if the laptop runs warm.

There was no permanent damage in this case or in your case, but it doesn't mean that all laptops will work perfectly fine for an extended period of time.

The G73jh is supposed to be getting air through the keyboard, keeping the lid closed would likely affect the volume of airflow. What do you think is going to happen if you affect the intake of airflow?

In addition to that, some business class laptops are designed to work in docking stations with the lid closed, and thus have less of an issue working closed.

I can run Crysis for you. Tell me what settings, resolution, and I'll set it up for you. I'll likely only be able to get the game running for about 30 minutes before i have to head out at 3 for a Super Bowl party though. But I' be happy to.

+1. AA not necessary. We really appreciate it!

    Hockeydude,

The amount that it will heat up in a gaming session beyond the 5 minutes of a benchmark are minuscule. When I was gaming/thermal logging on my G51j, that 5 minutes is more than enough to get the gpu/cpu to max temps. ANything beyond 5 minutes will see maybe 1-2c in heat creep. Nothing more.

Yeah, those settings would be great...thanks! :) I'm really curious just how cool this thing will stay with standard clocking over more than the 5 mins that a normal benchmark runs.

If she is stable at 750/1100, and someone finds a way to lock those in, I may. But I'll wait until Quad and Vicious Devil Dog do what they do best. I would love to be able to get it up to the 820 specs though on a permenant basis.

Have you heard of anyone being able to OC the clocks on this and have it stay after a reboot?

I did some reading here and there. I want to know from many opinions before I start ordering... I understand preference. I intend to use money wisely. I'm hoping for this laptop lasting maybe 4 years at least. All the upgrades sounds very sweet I really want them but I'm not too sure if its worth the value in terms of cost and power. Blue-ray I'm iffy about it since I never use it and I don't own blu-rary but I do watch a lot of movies through other means. I did notice the thermal compond I too want to try out the diamond but at the same time I want to see if it makes a huge impact if you happen to OC it. Ram and HDD I can always upgrade. That leaves me two places. Gentech and Powernotebook. Powernotebook is off by less than a buck from gentech. So it gives me a $1501 for a laptop. I want to know more about xotic but the network blocks the website for being a sale website so I want to know what the price would be xotic and how they offer differs from gentech and powernotebook. I'm using a military computer currently in Iraq. THis laptop will be a multi-purpose use include gaming of course ^^ So far I read that sound is terrific, lcd is superb, and temp readings are fantastic. This laptop represent itself with great value for sure compared to the many others out there. What is your thoughts about it.

Thinking gaming laptop will last 4years isn't a very good idea.
Thermal compounds make a difference but not by alot. If you don't watch blu Ray movies then go with the one with DVD rw.

well its more of a multipurpose laptop afterwards which I don't mind being ^^ I mean I love playing games but I like using other things for programs. One more question hoiw about the service of gentech, xotic, and powernotebook where do they shine out frorm the three and since I can't check xotic at all is there a price difference? Also, currently if you do know which one is more readily available than the other if you dont mind answerirng that ^^

The first gen of those drives gave them a bad rap. I would still take them with the latest firmware revision over a hitachi or fujitsu drive but that's only because of my past luck with those brands.

What if we don't OC or use it for high-end gaming like Crysis on highest settings?

I'm specifically buying this because I need a beast of a workstation for my 3D animation work that will last me as long as possible.

    EDIT:
I guess this is what I'm asking. You're saying it'll become outdated in 4 years, not actually breakdown, right?

I would hope the hardware will last 4 years. I don't really care if it can play the newest games in 4 years, at max settings...i'm not a huge gamer anyway...just looking for something with a lot of power that I can take on the road, and count on.

I am getting mixed signals here. Some reputable people have said there is no RAID option in the Bios. Other reputable people have said after this information that they are considering RAID on their 2 ssd, etc.

Please help me see the light here. Is RAID available on these or not?

    In addition to euisungkim's reply...

If you want a dual frequency card, you could also consider the Intel 5100 if your vendor provides that option.

i pre-ordered from Excalibur on jan 5 but you can't customize it. I would like to get the IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU even if it's a little better. so close to the shipping date... should i preorder from xoticpc or gentech simply because of one little thing? boggles the minds over little things... oh yeah it's a few dollar cheaper too: $1628.76 with the cash discount option.
i would want to be a loyal customer to Excalibur but... you don't get anything for being loyal.

I would stick with Xcal in this situation. If you switch to Gentech or Xotic now, you will have to wait at the back of a VERY long line. Also, don't worry too much about the upgraded thermal compound on the cpu. It won't make a huge difference. What you CAN do is add premium compound to your Gpu yourself when you receive the laptop.

I can't speak for the G73, as it's not in my hands yet. On my G51, it was relatively easy for me to get to the gpu. I imagine it will be the same on the G73. Yes, it involved screwdrivers, delicate hands, a soft touch, and a gentle love-making ability. Do you have what it takes XBlade? haha

If you look in the video reviews, the GPU is partially covered by the bottom of the case (you can see half of it if you remove the easy access panel).

Yep I do a 20+ mile off road mountain bike ride each Sunday its my only form of exercise, but this weekend my little brother was around I never see him. He is getting married soon and leaving state so we spent some time together. After yesterdays ride we did a double date him and his fiance and me and my wife, we were out late and drinking.... then I had to be up at 5AM to do my normal ride this morning. So I did 20+ miles yesterday and today. I am pretty sore now :D

Now that the weekend is almost over I can really start to crunch and work the the review. Its a dedicated process that takes a while. I break it into segments. One night I will do a big full photoshot (that is tonight)

Then I have a day or two of installing and benching games and recording the scores.

The next one will be compiling all the data into tables/graphs.

The the next day or so is advanced stuff, overclocking and any misc stuff like power usage. Then after using the laptop for that long I feel confident to right the actual review and give a good impression.

The result is a super detailed review just for this unit, I would rather take the time to do a review like this than rush out just a generalized review. Truth is you cant write a good review without some good hands on time with the machine. Rush one and you will overlook something and generally anything overlooked is the bad stuff that somebody may really need to know.

If all goes well the review will be up this week, we have many other great forum members posting pictures/benchmarks/impressions as they go to fill in that gap between now and my review.

Thanks! I asked in the other thread but no one seemed to have noticed.

@Mandrake, I find that the Seagate complaints are still coming at Newegg, and while the Hitachi drives have a pretty limited 1 year warranty, they seem to be having a lot less issues, and are faster.

So has anybody found a way to monitor this turbo boost technology? I see that little pre-installed widget shooting past 1.6ghz up to the 2.7ghz range when the system is under load but I know its just one or two cores.

I need to find a way to track the core speed of all the cores to evaluate performance. I cant say a benchmark was done at 1.6ghz when it uses one core at 2.7ghz. This new tech is a bit bothersome for evaluating.

Im hoping to find a way to monitor everything though and to manually overclock all 4 cores to see how good this cpu is.

You mean turbo boost? Assuming there is an option to turn it off in the BIOS, it could be disabled. I'm guessing the other thing you're asking is that if we can OC the 720 to 2.7GHz from its stock 1.6GHz. I'd say no, there's no way Asus would let us do that (though it would be nice).
