what parts do you need? I mean you can use two 500 gb 5400 rpm hds I spose. The rest is back up?

If one have the full hd lcd upgrade it.

take it apart and sell it for 300$ I think

you have the lcd, the cpu the gpu and the motherboard as the major parts. ram too

I got a cooler, it's the Cooler Master one with removable fans. It only lowered my temps 1-2 degrees... I still haven't replaced the Thermal Grease.
What is your guys suggestion on the type I should get?

Im looking into my temperatures too. I know my idle temperatures are fine though.

Im suprised at how much cooler the laptop is than my old gateway 6831fx.

btw my lcd is Monitor Name LG Philips LP173WD1-TLC1

which i do believe is the good one.

It has bad vertical viewing angles but outstanding horizontal viewing angles. Definitely the best i have ever had.

very little backlight bleed. reasonably bright 220 nits. overall the best screen ive owned. Im suprised

However back in the day the g2 had a dual la mp wuxga screen. it seems by the time the made the g72 they no longer put a top level screen in the g series.

Is anyone else getting problems with Source engine games? They don't seem to run very well, while running Crysis is fine...

Also, when temps hit around 85C, the GPU suddenly underclocks (I think) and the games suddenly start lagging. No "display driver has stopped working". Is there any known fix for this?

after a 3dmark my temps are

    cpu 45
    gpu 60

    hd 33

are those good? I think so lol it doesnt even seem to get hot. the previous poster is talking about 85c? Wow thats got to be hot lol. Im going to try a nd play new vegas and see if i can get it higher

    I got 10k score on 3dmark 06 yet i see people with over 11k

you know i looked it up and a 360 gts is inferior in most ways to a 260 gtx

that 360 series didnt make it to a whole lot of notebooks but it is in some g60s and g51
It kind of doesnt make sense because all of the numbers on the series are inferior to the 200 series

It went down like a lead bal
I would not consider it an upgrade although it does have gddr5

I have a feeling someone would rather do the opposite.

I think he was referring to the GTX 360m... not the GTS 360m... but I don't think there is a GTX 360m.

    no there is not

the 300 series top card is the 360 gts in the g60.

It uses much less power than a 260 gtx but in all other ways is inferior.

It is a 128 bit card that is close to a 260 gtx but worse.

Thats what it is in a nutshell. Few people would want to upgrade to it but it probably has fewer heat problems.]

dx10 card it was only in the g51 and g60 and not most of those.

So would you be able to upgrade the card at all in this thing. I finally got mine reorderd as the originaly one would have gotten here after I left the desert. So I still got time. Have any of yall replaced the stock ram with it? I was looking at replacing the ram with Crucial DDR2 800. Just get 8GB of it.

I have learned that the 360 gts in the g60 would not fit even if you wanted to.

Theres nothing to upgrade this model to so dont worry about it.

It would be possible to upgrade the 260 gtx to a 360 gts in the g60 or the g51 but the 360 gts was never made for the g72.

you know the motherboard has a different chipset on the best buy version?

Its called eaglelake not asus g72 which is what is on the bios on the asus site.

I dont know why but I dont recomend updating it because the hardware could and should be different.

There might not be bios updates for the best buy version

I dont know why it isnt more widely known, even spelled out

asus update does not see a bios update for the machine that should be your first clue.

I just noticed it in everest. It has amibios, eagle lake chipset.

The truth is Ive never heard of it. I downloaded the newest g72 bios and i notice they are all called asus g72

I have no idea what could be different but there might be something different.

FWIW...I am running non-stock RAM in mine, replaced the stock 6GB with 3 x 4GB SO-DIMMs of Mushkin DDR2 800. I have a RAM Drive and memory dedicated for Virtual Machines and got rid of the paging file completely. I have had no issue with the new RAM at all.

That's interesting. Does it speed up VMware significantly? Win 7 is painfully slow as a VM for me.

Yeah I have no problems running Win 7 inside Win 7 on a VM. I do all of my development work in a VM. I dedicated 4GB of the memory to the VM. I have even run a W2K8 Server w/ SQL and a Win7 Pro VM simultaneously while still using the main OS, without any issues.

I am using VMWare Workstation. Not sure what product you are using.

    Hey guys

just got my A1 back, SSD arrived there corrupted, I thought it was damaged.. anyway, long story, but bootmgr disappeared somehow in transit and I thought it was damaged due to poor packaging on the packing stores behalf... but it's all straightened out now.

Anyway, they replaced my keyboard, which doesnt seem to be double typing characters any more, which is nice. They replaced the fan because it was not working correctly, and this morning I installed the 6300 card I bought and then placed 24 copper blocks in the same manner as ren3g7ade on the sinks. The machine is still idling in the 83 range as I sit here typing, nzxt cryo running underneath of it.

Should I be concerned? Should I say screw it and apply the ac5 I have to the gpu and cpu? it's already been shipped out there twice now, I wonder if I can do anything more to cool it down some. I'm reading 60's for some and high 70's while gaming?? WTH is wrong with mine lol

As you've probably read in this forum, I traded a perfectly working BB version for the Quad A1 with 1080p and BT. He complained it was too loud. I found out why it was loud fairly quickly as it idled at 79C within 2-3 mins of boot.

I took it in for service at a local authorized service center. They dismantled it and applied the Arctic silver they had sitting on the shelf. It now idles in the 60s and games no more than 85C on SC2 on high.

They had also ordered new GPU and CPU but it took too long so I just kept it. It works so I've left it for now.

    Cheers,

unfortunately the only service center in the area no longer deals with asus, so if I take the plunge and apply my own brand, the laptop will no longer be covered under warranty.

I'm disappointed that asus again used inadequate or insufficient paste. I'm 100% sure I can do it, I'm just worried that something else will fail and it will no longer be covered and have to be paid for out of pocket...

    wait a second

the 6300 is a half card? Are you sure you dont mean your g73?

Because a g72 looks like afull card. I mean I just looked at it lol. It says it is.

    that would need a 5300
If a half card fits Im switching it. Its possible acer has some sort of antennae booster thing too they seem to advertise some sort of bs like signal up.

Ya this is a trip I cannot imagine why its not here on the forum

    the g72 has a p45 chipset

The g72 rxbbo5 has a intel eagle lake p43 chipset.

Theres no reason a bios for a p45 chipset should work on a p43 chipset.

Is there someone anywhere that updated their bb version g72 with an asus bios?

I mean it MIGHT work it just shouldnt really.

Im not positive what exactly a p43 chipset is,its either rare or unique. It supports p series dual cpus only no quads . this could be the only machine it exists in.

search for someone who updated the bios on their bb version of the g72
whats even weirder is I believe the g71 has a p43 chipset

My bb version I traded away had a half height. The a1 I have has a full size card. I bought these metal extenders on eBay. I'll post a link 2morrow. The 6300 works fine on 2 antenna. much better than the original.

I just installed my 2nd hd. I used 3 foam peanuts that came with the packaging.

Two in the back one cut in half underneath.

push the drive into the foam it compacts. when its connected it keeps it from going up.

    works perfectly.

How hard would it be to replace the keyboard bezel on this laptop? About 5 min after I got my refurb one out of the box, a dart bounced off the dart board and impailed itself in the bezel on the right side. I have my old one that I can take the bezel off of to replace it.

ok guys one more question regarding the GPU temp

I don't want to simply ignore it, but the GPU is runnign 86-88 at full load, maybe hotter if it wasn't on the cooler. I have placed the copper blocks and when I remove the back cover and run the machine on the cooler it runs about 75* steadily.

I can easily remove the heatsink on the GPU and replace the tape that is there now with AC5. Should I remove the GPU completely, is there any other pasting that should be done? I'm worried about smearing this on the board when I reinstall the gpu heatsink.

can anyone who has done this procedure on the G72 give me advice? would be a big help as I don't like the idea of leaving that cover off indefinitely. Thanks to anyone who can help

Hey....somthing weird has started to happen when i play newer games...mainly racing games. when im playing grid if im in a race and i turn the volume all the way up it laggs....not fps but stops and starts. if i mute it it goes away almost as soon as i hit the mute button. it will even play fine while i have the volume on but turned way down. so what gives? is it hard ware? i reinstalled both the video driver and the audio drivers. any help would be sweet.

Increasing the volume will increase the power draw on the analog stage of your audio circuits. If you are getting stuttering because of this, then something in that circuit is misbehaving and needs to be replaced, for example, a bad capacitor. You will probably need to have the motherboard replaced since it's integrated.

I have no idea, I've never run a benchmark in my life. I install the games I want to play. If they play well that's my benchmark.

What purpose do artificial benchmarks actually serve?
