um a improvement of a machine with the same hardware

so Ii have the same machine at 9800 3dmarks now at 11219 32dmarks, thats a large improvement.

If someone else with the same machine has a higher score they could be doing something different.

No guarantee of any game running better but a likelyhood it will.

So for you benchmarks are a way to determine whether additional driver or hdw tweaks might yield better performance that may or may not improve the day to day gaming experience?

Would you perform these tests prophylactically to determine potential performance issues prior to installing any games?

    Cheers,

Yes my machine is relatively new as far as whats being installed in it so I look at getting its score up before the games

the games have their own benchmarks sometimes too.

But ya run a score before and after a drive upgrade or an overclock to see what difference it makes.

Taking the cpu up to 3.0 ghz makes a difference in the score because its cpu slowed. Any particular game might not be.

    Hi,

I have a question for the gamers here.
DO you have problems with your G72 clipping(dropping frames) when playing Fallout3 New Vegas???? I have to run mine on the lowest setting and it still clips. same with Oblivion. and Fallout3 will not run at all.
any thoughts and help would be great.

( I'm sorta new to PC gaming)

    Thanks

    Tim

Check your temps using GPU-Z. Terrible frame rates in SC2 was the first indication I had a clogged fan and bad thermal paste.

Okay... Is there any way I can get a 2nd HDD in this model? I can't find an ASUS G72GX HDD bracket anywhere? Is there some easier solution? One that could be detailed enough to a point where it's step by step instructions?

They need to get them in the online store again. The page has been down for ages...

People have used cardboard or a bit of foam to hold the drive steady. The drive cage is available at asusparts.eu but the shipping is very very expensive and it takes a month or two to get them.

Is that cardboard or foam thing safe? Where can I get some on the cheap that is perfect sized? Also, I can't find a G72 HDD bracket there. I find a bunch of other ones. I have no idea what to look for.

Most folks are reporting no issues. Here's a G73 thread with a few pics.

There are others that show the cardboard too.

It's usually good to clean out the exhaust fan with a brush every one to three months. All computers attract dust and can clog the exhaust. If that isn't a problem, then running benchmark and/or stress tests can help expose the culprit. Try Memtest86+ at memtest.org, and run a full pass on each individual stick as I have a feeling that one or more RAM sticks might not be working here if it isn't a clogged fan.

Good suggestion. The service center said they had to dismantle my fan (whatever that means) to get it free of dust. Once they did that and did a re-paste it runs nice and cool.

    I used foam packaging peanuts.

3 of them 2 of them around the back and one cut in half underneath.

Ive seen people using foam earplugs and i think thats a better idea.

I think packaging peanuts will eventually degrade and put particles in the bay use this in the seperate bay not the gpu bay.

I saw a package of 8 ear plugs at the dollar store. looks like it takes 3 to do

quite possibly safer than a caddy as it absorbs vibration

After a hard choice i have just bought this as i beleive this is much better looking and weighs a hell of a lot less than the 73 the 72 may be in its steps back however i beleive this machine still packs a hell of a punch considering how demanding the games are now.

Has anyone been able to play empire total war on this machine ? dual core only.

And if so what was the quality ?

Thank you just bought my G72 GX from ebay for 600 quid STEAL!!!!

British pounds. (currently it takes about $1.55 to buy 1 British Pound) Computers always cost considerably more in Europe and your deal was an exception. The G72 is usually found as a BB refurb for between $600-$700.

The fan comes in two parts for the G72GX, the fan itself, and the heat sink attached to the CPU. The fan itself can come off without the heat sink. I just take the fan off and securely holding the laptop so that it doesn't fall, I use a quality paintbrush to get the dust out of the heat sink part.

I agree that its more attractive than the g73.

theres some nice sparkley finish to it while it lasts

In dollars and cents its not that far behind a g73. Itll max out most any game out today. In a few years itll run the majority of games, and the ones it wont the g73 wont handle much better.

Its a smart purchase. I like mine. I have no problem with heating or anything really.

I put in one of those momentus xts and now it boots in 18 seconds, desktop in 33 seconds...... 1 tb space.

Itd be nice if somehow the gpu from the g73 were in a g72

I do plan on getting one of the wuxga g73 screens, they cost 100 here and they ship to the uk btw. 63.65 quids

I completely agree with you the 5870 and the 460M are no tad better than the 260M and getting games in the green FPS line they may produce a few marks better in FPS but all in all that is it so to speak.

The 72 IMO is just and clearly is better looks nice and feels nice im no hard case at all i love the G73 however the price is ridiculous i can now get my G72 and a canon 5D Hollywood camera.

Sometimes i like to think of the 72 As of what made Asus deliver the 73 if it where not for the bad boy G72 i don't think Asus would of known to produce a nice looking step forward model.

Publicly what im saying is it all basicly started from the G72.

I'M now looking for ward to playing all games on either high or max with this machine that lacks of the G73 Spec however it can deal a lot of pain to the new Beasts and is almost 600 quid less 600 Pounds 1200 Dollars Less than what i would of payed for the silly G73 Great Machine Bad Pricing.

I have been able to play StarCraft II and Nevw Vegas both on high with no lag what so ever. So this laptop does infact pack quiet a punch still. The only thing is that I have a dart in pack on the keyboard bezel now. Was wondering how hard it is to replace the keyboard bezel, Other than the touchpad of course.

I did the ear plug method to hold in the other HDD and so far, it seems fine! I used three for good measure. Two on the end and one on top. It seems to be running perfect! If I can get a picture of it, I'll show you how I did it. But basically, there's a black portion at the end of the HDD. I put one of the ear plugs there. I barely feel the thing vibrate.

Ya totally. Chicks dig the g72 more too. I have to beat them off with a stick personally

You know just on economics I always trip out of what stuff costs in england.

The MSRP of a g73 bb version here, full retail, is 1200 usd.... so less than 800 quid. You over there its almost what 1300 quid or 2000$? JESUS CHRISTA

Why this is so suprising is firrst off, who can afford this? Per capita income is lower than the us or canada or even like germany. The average person there makes less thats fine... but they pay significantly more in taxes and the cost of living is through the roof.

So what do computer geeks do? Unemployment is higher there than here even with the us recession.

Next, you can get it for near us prices in germany, why isnt there just a huge grey market everywhere?

Thirdly a good chunk of you all speak english, so theres no like hiding the us market from you. Fourth its a computer so its target market uses the internet.

The difference in price is larger than a round trip ticket to england for what it matters. maybe they gouge you all for that stuff too though

    Hi,

I want to thank you guys for the help. I cleaned out the fan/heat sink with a brush and a little canned air. downloaded memtest and found only one stick was working. I tested each stick and they all worked in the first slot. after the third time installing all the sticks they all worked.

all I can say is wow........ the G72 is faster than my gaming desktop!!!!!!!!! so I did my wife's Dell and it's running faster too (a 1 gb stick was not working)
I did order some Silver Artic paste to repaste the GPU heatsink along with a laptop cooler.

    Thanks again

    Tim

Hello everyone! Great forum.....My question is I bought the Best Buy version back in 2009 of the G72GX and wanted to know how I can identify if my network card can work with an n network? I'm a bit of a noob with this stuff, so sorry about the basic question. I use Windows 7 if that helps...I wanted to know before I invest in a new router.....Thanks for the help and look forward to the great info!

I do believe you have the same crappy atheros card I do
The manufacturers specs state that it can come with 3 different intel cards too though

go to asus.com type in g72, look at downloads

the drivers show the intel card but so far as I know everyone got this azureware pos card that drops connection at random and has low range.

Atheros is general is a fine company but this one is lame. It is an n card though I have not had occasion to connect to an n network

1st intell download or 2nd? Both were released on the same day.

    Thanks again for the help.

Not sure which post you're responding to but the azureware 64bit Windows 7 driver is this one.

Description Azurewave Wireless Lan Driver and Application
Wireless Lan Driver and Application (Please first install the Wireless Console Utility before this driver installation)
    1. Please refer to below FAQ to check your Wireless''s PID code:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- FAQ FAQ WLAN Driver Hardware ID

    2. This WLAN driver is for below PID code:

    HardwareID=PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002B

    HardwareID2=PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A

    HardwareID3=PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0024

    HardwareID4=PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_001C

File Size 664.1 (KBytes) 2009/10/23 update

It was the first one under wireless. Hated it and bought the Intel 6300n. I had to use a metal extender to fit it in place of the full size card in my G72. I have 6300n in both the G72 & G73. I then used the drivers from the Intel site.

    Hi all,

I just got my refurbished G72GX from NewEgg last week, and so far, it's been great. As this is my first Asus, I do have one question: is there any unnecessary pre-installed "bloatware" that I can get rid of? I'm trying to keep the computer running as smoothly as possible, and there are several Asus programs like Multi Frame, ATK Hotkey, etc. that I'm not quite sure I actually use.

    Thanks! :D

Theres a good thread here somewhere in the asus forum describing all the asus software.

I recomend keeping all the atk stuff so you can adjust your volume and brightness.

Mult I dont really know what it does you could kill it.

Keep life frame though for taking a quick picture.

I like most of the asus software personally and none of it is trying to sell you something unlike all the crap you get on an HP or a toshiba.

but check that thread for in depth descriptions

you can get rid of asus update that thing doesnt even work

    I love asus fastboot.

    Remove asus expressgate/

What is the exact model of your G72? The BB revisions will not accept a Quad Core so the highest you can go is the highest clocked Dual Core, e.g. the T9900. I haven't heard good things about the phoenix pro, but its all just hearsay. I am still waiting for prices to drop and sizes to go up before I buy an SSD.

I know mine is a best buy model because I got it from cowboom, a best buy company.

It came with a 5400 rpm seagate hd and one caddy.

Im not sure if the best buy model came with a 7200 rpm model I hadnt heard of that.

Also the best buy g73 has a 5400 rpm hdd too so it sounds strange. but its possible.

Oh I have no idea at all what is sold overseas.

That one right there COULD take a quad but I DOUBT IT.

theres no best buy its not the same model number. I dont know. I DOUBT IT. Seems to be exactly like mine except the hd speed but you NEVER KNOW til you try.

in general I dont actually fully understand it

quads do not work in the p43 chipset of any laptops

    EXCEPT SOME G71s and G72s

I dont know why they dont or why they do. Its only relevant for this purpose though

IF YOUR LAPTOP CAME WITH A Q9000 you can put a QX9300 in it.

Otherwise you cant. Does your laptop have a quad in it? Then it can use a quad. Thats the rule so far as I can tell.
9 edit the other laptop was a gateway 7815

The X9100 would work but if you don't really want to overclock its probably better to go with the T9900. It's a little cheaper and has a slightly lower maximum TDP. If your goal is to overclock, then the X9100 is your best option. Essentially the X9100 is an unlocked version of the T9900.

As far as the hard drive goes, you can probably run hardware diagnostics to let you know what you have, or you could just open the back and take a look.

For some reason (probably cost) Asus decided to use p43 chipsets for some laptops and p45 for others. The p45 chipset laptops, like mine, accept quadcore processors while the cheaper ones that were sold @ BB had lower specs on the HDD, CPU, Optical drive, and the lcd screen used.

Im not positive what the difference is between the two chips

They are so similar they were probably made on the same day.

Intel gave the x9100 a higher watt heat rating though because it can go higher.

The other chip might just be the same or the x9100 might be able to overclock higher. I bet it does but wed need someone to test ocing the t9900

right now ebay has the t9900 as more expensive actually.
