It's 6X and this ebay listing gives more details.

    Panasonic UJ-240 6X Blu-Ray Burner BD-RE SATA DVD Drive - eBay (item 250680901471 end time Nov-08-10 16:35:03 PST)

I bought mine used as a pull from someone here in the marketplace for $89. I check that place all the time.

Yes and yes I've performed this swap on several machines. Almost all current 12.7mm optical drives use interchangeable faceplates. There's also a little bracket that is swapped but it's all very
simple if you have tiny screwdrivers.

    Cheers,

I was looking for the size of the ones that secure the hard drive or solid state drive to the bracket mostly. I'd like to have a full set for stability, but I can settle for a minimum of two.

Aren't you talking about the std screws for any 2.5" hard drive drive? Most any shop would have those. They also come with most retail 2.5" drives.

Those come with the bracket when you purchase it, but the one's I mentioned that secure the bracket and hard drive to the laptop do not.

Then, unless they fell out the box without me noticing it, I didn't get any screws with my bracket. I did manage to find some that were usable so I won't go beating my head over it.

edit: I'm not trying to sound sarcastic, just saying what happened with me.

No problem, I understand. Did you order the bracket from Asus?

I ordered a bracket from Asus so I could add a second drive. The two screws to secure the hard drive into the bracket came in a small plastic bag which was taped to the bracket. It didn't come with screws to mount the bracket to the laptop so, I took one of the two screws from the the first drive and used it for the second.

Yes, from their estore. Was there any other place to get it from? I'm waiting for a Solid State Drive. Now onto a different topic. Has anyone tried to upgrade the P8700 to a T9900?

People who've used it said it runs hotter so you just need to use the best thermal compound and do a go job applying it. Stay away from ES versions and there's an Apple only version (pulls from older imacs - they don't show t9900 on the chip but run at 3.06) that runs even hotter so stay away from those.

Yeah that frame relay might be the ticket. I already have mine rigged but I suppose for 4.99 I might just pick one up and switch it out to that.

    Good Find!

So I'm better off getting a non-OEM version from ebay or Intel. Newegg has an OEM version for over $500. It's not my priority upgrade at this moment. Right now, this is my list of upgrades I have planned:

1: 160 to 180GB SSD with Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate (Either should allow me to upgrade to 12GB RAM.)

    2: The aforementioned 12GB RAM.

    3: The CPU

I don't plan on getting these right away. That be too expensive for me.

what's the benefit of maxing out the RAM? most applications I run while encoding h264 mp4 video I never really seem to go past 4 gb of the 6 installed.

would 12gb really benefit the machine that much? I'm running an intel ssd too

OEM is fine, just make sure it really OEM.

The extra ram is good for running virtual machines but I haven't needed more than 4gb for most games. I don't really use windows for anything else. OEM t9900 can be found in the $350 range.

Hey, I jsut got my G72GX here in the desert where I am deployed right now. A guy here on base was selling it and I never had my own true gaming laptop. I was wondering about the heat sinks that you guys would say are the best to put on the laptop. I have read a few on here but wanted a fresh sugestion.

I often use Fraps with my games and my newest game, Fallout: New Vegas, requires Steam, so that puts a burden on my RAM. It could just need a few more patches, but I'd like to have as much physical memory before I start to use virtual memory. Plus, by time I get the RAM upgrade, the CPU upgrade should be more affordable.

I'm a little confuse about the OEM phrase on a CPU. I know that with a OS, OEM's have third-party software to make the price lower, but I don't know with a CPU and that makes me hesitate.

OEM CPUs are the fully functioning Intel chips provided to the computer makers like ASUS. The retail versions are in full boxed packaging. Very rare to find laptop cpus in retail packaging.

ES chips are Intel samples before full production begins. Many ebay sellers get these and try to sell them at greatly reduced prices. Some work, some don't. Some have no thermal sensors (or defective ones). In general just stay away from ES chips.

I've purchased used OEM cpus pulled from working laptops and they are somewhat less expensive.

Best of luck with your upgrades.

    Cheers,

    Try here for OC info:

    Asus G72GX RBBX-05 gaming performance review with pics - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

When buying a used G72 the biggest issue is bad or dried out thermal paste on the CPU & GPU and clogged fans.

I bought a BB version, sold it and bought the A1 used. It idled at the mid 70Cs and quickly went to 100C while gaming. I sent it in under warranty and had the paste job redone. They also dismantled the fan and cleaned it out. Works great now.

You HAVE to use a program like WinRAR or 7zip to extract the ROM, otherwise you get that error. Is it not booting into Windows at all? Or is Windows 7 loading then hanging?

Either way, you should be fine. An alternate would be to get the bios ROM onto a flash drive, use the EZ Flash program and flash the BIOS from there.

Please do post with more details. Hopefully we can get you up and running.
    Where are you deployed btw?

Yes, US credit cards are fine.

As to jury rigging it; people use all manner of foam, cardboard, tape, etc.

I just bought 3 for the BB version of the G73 I used to have. I sold the other two at a higher price to make up for the shipping.

I may order a large order from them for G73 brackets to provide them at a reasonable price ($15-$16 + USPS shipping) to BB G73 buyers. If I do I can add a G72 bracket and you can get the same deal. Let me know if that would interest you?

Here's someone who rigged his G73.

The last time I ordered 3 from them it took a month to be delivered from Sweden.

I will most likely place the order tonight. You can pay me when it arrives and then I'll ship it to you.

    Heh no. 100$ to try?

I havent seen any signatures of asus g73 or g72 or g71 with a 12.5 mm hd

This means nothing but possible a bad sign.

I look though at a picture of someone putting s cardboard spacer in a hd bay without a caddy.

THIS means it is larger than 9.5 mm doesnt it? Going by this spacer however it doesnt LOOK big enough.

Ive done all the searching I can. Maybe I need to ask gen tech or whoever the helpful asus dealer is.

All I know is that it was a relatively tight fit in the second enclosure. It may fit in the first enclosure next to the fan. The cover door is raised and may accommodate the larger drive.

Hello. I am new to the forums here, I am pretty much joining just for this thread.
I've owned my G72GX laptop for... around 11 months now. I bought it at BestBuy for 999.99$

I love it, it's the best laptop I've ever owned.
I never really payed attention to the temps on my laptop before the other day.
I am usually really careless with it... I have left it on, on my bed once for a whole day. Well I recently started recording the temperatures on it. Before looking through this thread, the GPU was idling at 75c CPU is around 43c that seems normal. I got that optimize program that lowers clock speeds when not running anything graphically intensive, it not Idles at 62c aprox.

Well I don't have a cooling pad, I am going to go pick one up today at compusa, most likely a thermaltak cooling pad with a 220mm fan. Also while I am there, I am going to pick up some thermal grease and reapply all the heat sinks. I will also see if I can get some copper heat sinks, to apply on the aluminum heat sink inside the laptop, as I saw ren3g7ade did. I am bound to respond back here with questions. Well I'll say thanks for everyone that has put information here. I am still trying to read through this thread, I am on page 25 no. haha might take awhile. Well, I shall be around.
    This laptop is a beast.

Also ren3g7ade you can close the case for your laptop after adding those copper heat sinks right?

    congrats.

I just got my g72 today give me a few days to put windows on it and tune it and ill be actively messing with it.

Mine is just awesome. I wonder if I should do a review of it, I got it for 400$ from cowboom.

It is in as new condition other than it is missing both of the little usb covers

Is there a source for little plastic usb covers?

    thats a good question

in the event i see a broken g60.

I do believe the 360 gts actually has a lower 3dmark score but uses less power so its questionable whether it is worth it.

    Congrats on yours too...

Well a update from mine. I got the Thermaltak laptop cooler... and... It doesn't work... I will be exchanging it again tomorrow. I still haven't reapplied the thermal grease yet I will probably do that tomorrow. Best Buy didn't sell the Zalman Ram Heat Sinks ethier, So I will get those later. The re-application of thermal paste and cleaning of the fans on the G72 will most likely resolve the overheating issue. Those copper heat sinks don't do much if the paste is all dried up or misapplied and fans are clogged with dust!

    Cheers,

Yah. Does anyone know of any videos of how to take this laptop apart or is it pretty much self explanatory? I am pretty good with electronics but I don't want to take it apart half way just to get stuck... then have to put it back together just to come back onto here, to find out how to continue, Thanks again for all the info.
