So, I am experiencing some issues with CPU/RAM load. It seem very high for windows 7. I am only running chrome, and what you see up on the desktop. Here is a screen shot with all my monitoring stuff up. let me know if something looks out of the ordinary> this is taken right after boot up.

edit: i actually can't login to my photo bucket account right now for some reason. please tell me how else i can attach said screen shot.....

They tested it and the GPU has thermal slow down at 100c. They ordered a new GPU and are re-pasting. They wouldn't use the fancy thermal paste though just some silver past they have in stock. If I can find the high grade stuff I could drive 50 miles to give it to them. Ugh!

We shall see what Monday brings.

    Cheers,

Interesting, but mine overheats just sitting at idle it's 79c. Run anything that requires gpu power and it jumps to over 100c in less than 5 minutes. They are replacing the GPU and the thermal paste. Regardless I will apply the sc2 fix when it gets back just in case.

Hi all, hoping someone can help...

I just got one of these laptops second hand. The previous owner insists that he never had a problem with it, but since i've had it, it has yet to run flawlessly. The main issue being continual freezing up. Got to the point of getting a BSOD, which i haven't seen since Win98.

Anyhoo, i attempted fix things through recovery, however it would never make it all the way through, only getting as far as 49% on one attempt. It will usually give me these screens, before having to manual reboot and try again.

Is there a way to recover it through DOS? or am i SOL and resigned to sending it to BestBuy to fix?

Do you have the system recovery disks? If so boot from the ASUS Windows 7 recovery disk and re-install the entire OS.

Temps are very good. CPU and memory utilization is higher because of all that background stuff you have running. Take a look at msconfig and check out all the stuff you have running. You can eliminate some or just run them when you want and exit, taking them out of memory when they close.

Check this out ! it really does work it drops the temperature
    From 95 degrees to 84 degrees .

    With the CPU clocked to 3Ghz and G.P.U clocked at 550 / 950 / 1400 .

I can play Call of Duty 4 for hours on end with out having to worry about
cooking the processor or the G.P.U .

    The temperature has dropped dramatically.

I haven't even yet applied Silver compound paste to the CPU, North Bridge or
G.P.U so the temperatures would drop even further.

I want to in the near future attach a miniature fan on to the chrome steel
sink air intake to blow cool air onto the G.P.U.

I will not spur off or connect the fan in parallel with some other source just
in case it draws to much current and damages the motherboard.

So I will have to find an alternative source from the motherboard to power
    the miniature fan .

And you may want to think about tweaking Windows 7 ...check out Black Vipers Windows 7's tweaking page web page.

Although it looks cool im sure that putting a hole that size right over the intake of the only fan inside the case will take flow away from everything except the cpu. im planning on installing and external low profile case fan (once i find one) that uses usb to power it. i plan to widen the hole above the heatsinks of the gpu and install it over those newly widened holes. this way there will be an intake and an exhaust.

Thank you for your comment . The reason I put the chromed sink plates there was because was not only the air in but to also make it sturdy . I didn't want to put any speaker mesh there as it maybe come damaged and flex .

However your comment about making the holes bigger is certainly a good idea.

Believe me before I made this mod temperatures were high and I'm pleased with the latest results, although there is room for improvement .

I don't particularly want any external fans , although a small fan could be attached inside the chrome sink or on the inside .

I don't particularly want to use any of my U.S.B ports redundant.

I could quite happily live without the fancy Asus logo lights on the monitor.
I'm sure the power from them would drive some miniature fans.

I'm toying with this idea. But certainly making the chromed sink holes slight larger is a good idea .

Got it back and it works great. The parts took too long to arrive so they just re-applied the thermal paste and thoroughly cleaned the fans. I now have 50C @ idle and 68-75 on Starcraft at 1080p on medium.

I'm very pleased. I will keep playing this weekend. They want me to bring it back once the replacement CPU and GPU arrive. I'm not sure I want to if its working this well.

    Cheers,

I got the beta drivers before I sent it in for repair. I couldn't measure the difference because I'd already sold the bb version g72. I downloaded the nvidia system tools to enable overclocking but really didn't use it because originally I couldn't keep it cool at stock.

    It's very stable now.

Has anyone had issues with their G72gx-a1 or other quad/dual core models hanging at the bios screen when booting? Lately I have noticed it takes a lot longer to display the ROG symbol at the beginning. I'm running an intel SSD in here and it always booted in about 27 seconds, now its much longer.

    bios installed is 0602

any help or opionions appreciated. I'm going to run a full norton scan and the intel ssd toolbox optimizer. Anyone have any other ideas?

I'm sorry I've never seen that before. I do not have SSD drive tho. Boots windows 7 normally and is fast and stable now that the CPU and gpu are repasted. I'm at bios 0602 as well.

Do you have the SSD as the first boot device in the bios? That's the only thing I can think of.

    Cheers,

I'm not sure if it's possible on your G72, but on my G51J it'll hang at boot for a very very long time if I have certain devices plugged in, it usually happens with an external hard disk via USB. If you don't have anything plugged in it's obviously not the problem, just an idea. You could also try resetting your CMOS to factory defaults and see if that helps, or running a few passes of memtest to see if you have any memory problems.

Hey guys thanks for the replies, this was the solution. I have a JBOD 4 disk enclosure hooked up through the express card slot via esata port replicator, I popped that card out and it fired right up. Even with the enclosure off, it still was hanging. I was worried something was wrong with the bios or something. Thanks for the info.

And yes I do have the ssd as the primary boot device, which is why I was thinking it was the drive, but all is good now. Mine's heading back to Indy this week for repasting and cleaning, I've been running with the cover off and on the cooler, temps in mid 70s at idle. cover on, idles at 82-84* C. Too hot. Hopefully it will improve.

Are our esata ports capable of port mutiplying with an update or are we stuck?

    Thanks again for the input.

Nice Job with the fan holes!

If I could find a spare cover for my G71Gx, I would drill those holes in a heartbeat. I just don't want to make that destructive a change unless I have the ability to roll it back some how. If you know somewhere that sells extra backplates I would appreciate the info.

I'm having issues with fps while playing League of Legends. I would assume this laptop can easily run it on max settings. I was playing on max settings for weeks fine, 40-50 fps at least. Lately, after playing for about 20 mins even AFTER restarting the computer, if I'm playing on max settings it'll suddenly drop to 6 fps, and I am forced to turn everything to minimum settings to continue playing decently. Downloaded HWMonitor and after playing and the fps dropping, it says a max GPU temp of 102 C. That seems pretty high, is it not? Any idea on what to do to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the exact same issue.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...-asus-g72gx-owners-lounge-83.html#post6735734

Had to take it in to the authorized service center and have it re-pasted with Arctic silver. They ordered a new GPU & CPU but that took too long so I took it back with just the re-paste. Works great now. Never gets over 87C. 100C is the magic number on this system; it will down clock every time it gets that hot. Time to get it re-pasted.

    Cheers,

I have the same issue with my N80nv with a Blu Ray drive hooked up in an external enclosure. Have to remember to have that off when I boot.

Is this that common on Asus systems? I saw a ton of complaints about this with the G73jh, and am a bit too paranoid to open the G73jw I got-I've NEVER had to repaste a system before, and I'm seeing all this stuff about Asus' ones :-/

Pretty common on mass produced systems to have low cost or poorly applied thermal paste. QC is less important than spitting out a ton of systems.

Many MBP systems used to have this issue. More recent models do not. I personally will always take it in if I have to disassemble the whole unit to get at the offending component. My Asus G50VT was much easier to open. A few screws and the entire bottom came off. Changed the CPU and redid the paste.

If you don't have an issue I wouldn't bother.

    Cheers,

Don't think that one is what I am looking for... :( (but thanks for the site...looks like they might have the part)

This one holds promise! Looks a lot like mine...It is for the G72Gx but I wonder how different the bottom of the G71Gx and the G72Gx are...

Has anyone here owned a G71Gx and a G72Gx? If so, what say you?

UPDATE: Looks like they do have a similar back door assembly for the G71Gx. Woo Hoo!

    +1 rep for panzer06 and RW417

I have both the G71GX and G72GX, and can confirm that the bottom plates are interchangeable. :)

I'm not sure what size they are, but they are the same as the many screws which you will find in the undercarriage/bottom assembly of the laptop.

Can someone who has a G71 series laptop guide me in installing and routing the 3rd MIMO antenna that I want to install on my G72?

I have an extra antenna, and I like to stream my videos, and I think a 3rd antenna would help the HD mp4's to my xbox with less skipping

Where might i find a diagram? you can imagine I was disappointed when I opened this case and found 2 wires not 3 when I look at renegades pics and he has 3!! hahah

hoping to have my g72 back early next week, asus indy got it today, went from binghamton ny to indy overnight. impressive

Ok, so I am aware that this isn't the G71GX-RX05 thread, but no one seems to post there much anymore. Ergo, I need ya'll's advice at the moment.

I purchased a G71GX-RX05 recertified laptop and have already purchased Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (laptop is coming tomorrow). I am just wondering if I am going to have any driver issues after downloading windows 7. I've seen the drivers section on Asus' website, but the last drivers were released last year, causing me to think that they aren't the most current drivers.

Also, wondering if there are any 12 cell batteries available for the G71GX-RX05. I'm using this as a laptop for class, so I'm in need of a bigger battery, if possible.

Lastly, will the installation of Windows 7 wipe all of the bloatware that comes on the laptop stock, or will I have to do that manually?

Any help is appreciated guys, thanks.

If you're doing a clean format/install of the OS, it won't have any left over.

I'd guess you can do this with very minimal hassle. I recently install 7 on a Core 2 system, and the only extra driver I had to install after the OS was running was for a Broadcom Ethernet controller, which I just downloaded on another system and stuck on a CD.

So you might run into something like that, but otherwise you should be able to install it, get everything from Windows update, and of course get the newest Nvidia drivers from Nvidia.com

Look up a few posts. Asusparts.eu pretty much sells most parts and if they don't have it they can usually get it. Shipping to U.S. Isn't cheap but they will have it if no one else does.

Man the back cover is $43 shipped...a little price maybe? the shipping is double what the part costs, which is ridiculous!

FYI: this forum is for G71Gx and G72Gx (since they are basically the same thing)

That said, you should have no problem with the drivers from the website when doing a fresh windows install. That is what I did. Make sure you upgrade the bios to the latest one too...

Don't know of any larger batteries for the G71Gx...

You can either remove the bloatware manually or if you do a fresh install, it will all be gone anyway.

The stock NIC in the G71 is a 2 antenna NIC although there is a 3rd wire avalable, it is taped back as it can't be used with the stock hardware. I bought an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 from babyhemi in the NBR marketplace and replaced my stock card. However I will say the new card is only a half height card, and I had to rig padding to the top 2 corners of the card to ensure that it stayed in place as the slot for it is springloaded and wll tilt the card upwards. I essentially rigged rubber pads that were high enough to keep the card horizontal and then carefully plugged the card in.

It was totally worth the effort though as I now find wireless networks where I never saw them before and the signal strength is great too.

If you want to trying rigging that setup I'd be happy to answer any questions. Otherwise, you could just buy a full height card and install/screw it in. (but where's the fun in that ;) )

Here's part that solves that problem.

    Mini PCI-E half-height to full-height Frame relay - eBay (item 140430939047 end time Nov-20-10 00:15:44 PST)

And yes, asusparts.eu is expensive to ship to the US. I try to partner up with others or buy multiple copies like the drives cages for my G73. I bought three and sold the other to in order to offset some of the high shipping cost.

    Cheers,

I'm relatively sure that my G72 does not have a 3rd antenna to be used.. but no matter because I have a spare. And I have already used that bracket as I am replacing my 5350 intel half height card. I actually did purchase my 6300 card from babyhemi last week! thanks for the info

can anyone confirm or officially deny if there are 3 antennas or only 2?

    Panzer -

what is the speed of your BD-RE drive in your G73 ? Do you have any information on it?
