This post made me to register here. :) Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to send you a direct message.

Anyway, I'm having the exact same issues with my G72GX gfx overheating and I was hoping I could solve it by flashing a new BIOS and maybe even making the hole in the cover.

Would you be willing to share your version of BIOS if you still have it? I'd be really glad if you could, it might save me a lot of trial and error process.

Also, have you got a spare part for the bottom cover, or did you cut it through the original one? (If so, where did you get the new one?)

Thanks a lot in advance, you just might save one more notebook from getting fried and make his owner really happy about it. :)

Does somebody know if the mainboard of this laptop is the same as the one for the g71, because my mainboard is broken and I seem unable to find the part for the g72gx in the asus store.

Basically, to fix the problem, just power off the laptop and remove the battery, then snap off the plastic covers that cover the screen hinges (they pop off easily). I'd say disconnect both data cables and then both of the black ground cables (you'll need a small Phillips) and reattach them firmly (don't break anything!). I tried to position the black ground cable in a way that there was no possible way closing the screen would put any strain onto it.

If you'd like a video to help you, check this link out. It's for an Asus G71 but it's similar enough to the G72GX to help out.

okay so i have several comments questions and problems with my new asus g72gx.
okay so... first day. nothing went wrong played small games. wc3 dota..
2nd day screen kept flickering when it wasnt on brightest settings. also the screen other then the brightness was going weird. like a tv without signal for a split second once in a while.
okay thats my story. on 4th day with it and those minor and weird problems occur maybe once ever hour and it just scares me. i tryed installing newest bios. but i guess im doing something wrong cause i cant open the .rom file asus support website gives you in.
okay questions now. i have the recovery disk. how do i use them cause computer loads too fast and i tryed f8. doesnt work o.o? can i use recovery disks to reinstall windows on my asus? another question how do i install the new bios on my computer?
comments. holy %&*$ i love the graphics card. ultra settings on sc2 i know i can play much better games but sc2 is good enuf for me. i do abuse the overclocking btw just cause its so easyy to ( pressing just fn + spacebar ) and love just playing around with this computer. even with these minor problems i love this laptop.

It would be great if you or someone else that has added the hole and filter could post more info or pics! I removed the main cover underneath and used a cooler with it and the temps never went past 85*. If I could find that filter part you mentioned, I'd like to try it.

g72gx-rbbx05....will this version support a QX9300? i see that some of them use the Q9000, which commonly means that it should support QX9300, but i just want to confirm that there isn't some weird ASUS proprietary stuff that prohibits the use of this chip

    thanks!

how does the g72 compare to g71 ?
I got g71(bb model) which runs great, gpu temps are around 85c, so no overheating there, cpu temps seem ok aswell, they never got high enough for me to notice and remember temp.
I got few g72's on my eye for a cousin of mine but I'm wondering what are the changes in the never model.

First off i would like to say that unlike many other posters i have read this entire thread over the past few days. that said i would like to know the fps differences between over clocked and under clocked (stock bios/nv driver) and if upgrading them increases my chances of having heat problems. currently i am running games like team fortress 2, counter strike source, day of defeat, and Warcraft 3 flawlessly. the gpu does not go past 67 c. but like any gamer i want MOREEEEEEE.....i drive a truck though so having it lock up on me out on the road would not be good.

my question is: will upgrading bios and drivers cause more problems that it is worth?

Has anyone had any problems with their power adapter? Mine just stopped charging, and I can tell it is from the connection between the cord and the laptop. I searched and didn't find anything in this forum so just wondering if it is just me

I had that problem. Does it go in and out either from moving it or just at random? For me it was because a big chunk of the metal where the pin connects to the cord broke, so eventually to pin just came out of the rubber. Thankfully I have a bb warranty so they replaced it, but it was still a significant problem.

Yea, it just started doing it out of the blue. It will connect/charge if I have it a certain way, but if it moves it disconnects. So when you say "the pin" you mean inside the computer itself right? I am pretty sure thats the problem I have as well, otherwise would just try a new cord.

I bought mine at best buy but didn't get the service plan...am tempted to just buy the service plan now if they will let me get it. Asus wants me to pay for the shipping to send it in, and said it can be 10-14 business days before I get it back.

If you have thermal problems, I'd recommend the following:
    1. Buy a good notebook cooler, like the NZXT Cryo LX
    2. Add thermal paste to the GPU and CPU (but this will void your warranty)
    3. Add copper ram sinks and attach them using Sekisui Thermal Tape
    4. Start the machine with the bottom cover off to make sure the fan hasn't gone out and there's not too much dust accumulated.
    5. Upgrade your video drivers.

You should not be idling in the 80's. My GPU idles @ 50C and goes up to 87C under load.

You have to be a little clearer...are you shaking the laptop, moving the mouse, tilting the lid...does the screen display immediately when you "shake it" are you sure you checked your hibernate settings?

Different mainboard for G71 and G72 (although they are variants of the same board). your warranty should take care of the repairs, unless you voided it somehow...

I just swapped in this A1 for my RBBX05. I love the 1080p display and BT. The only issue is this thing is running very hot. Idle GPU @ 76C, fans @ full blast, heat radiating from top of keyboard. Looks like the prior owner added copper heatsinks to no avail. Downloading the system tools now. What should I downclock to while I look at a solution?

    Cheers,

Adding Copper only help if there is a good thermal transfer from the GPU to the heatsink. Seems to me like the issue with your machine is what the normal problem is with stock thermal compounds...they aren't very good at all. If you don't mind voiding the warranty or know an asus reseller that can help, it might be a good idea to get some ICD7 or ICD24 and replace the thermal compound on the CPU and GPU with that, then make sure you have a good fit with the heatsink...you should notice temps dropping. Also it helps to have a good notebook cooler under the laptop. My GPU idles @ ~ 51C in a relatively warm room, with the aid of the thermal compound and an NZXT Cryo LX.

As far as downclocking goes, stock clocks for ASUS are usually recommended and I personally wouldn't go below those, but you can see if that helps a little too.

One other point to consider is the drivers. I am running NVIDIA's latest drivers without any problems.

OK, I have the latest BIOS & nvidia drivers. So I will check to see if I have a local ASUS service center capable of doing the ICD24 application.

What's the highest setting anyone has been able to run SC2 on the A1?

Shouldn't it be able to handle at least med? I tried it yesterday and it was very slow on anything other than low.

It has the 1080p display. I'm restoring the system to original and installing the BETA nvidia 260 drivers from September 2010. I will take it down to 1600x900 if that doesn't help.

    Finished fresh install.

I can play SC2 on med with this fresh install @ 1280x720. Is it the Q9000 CPU or the nvidia 260m that is slowing everything down at higher res? Should I try to OC the CPU?. Temps idle 75-78c max during game 93c.

Any ideas from the G72GX-A1 SC2 players?

Edit: Always slows down when GPU hit 100c. I guess I'll need to send it in for a re-paste.

can you guys help me out with this install? the link i used was on this forum for the video driver. but i dont think it is right. seems that it had been updated of something i dont know.

also my sound card is acting funny. eveery few minutes or so it will lagg a bit. it almost sounds like a fast skip... it sounds alright though

Nice Truck! Hopefully you have mobile wifi too! Are you installing the beta nvidia mobile drivers from their website? That's what I use. I just need to get the GPU/CPU re-pasted since the GPU keeps overheating.

Also the sound drivers on ASUS website work fine. Is that what you're using?

SC2, Company of Heroes. According to the users of the the 460m in the new G73JW this driver improves SC2 performance. Works great for me for 10 mins since my G72 needs to be RMA because the GPU overheats. Seems like the paste needs to be re-done or my card replaced.

ren3g7ade.. i see you have a quad in your 71gx.new to laptops, been building desktops for awhile, would the quad be compatible with my 72gx? also would the change to a x9100 require a bios change? or are the bios equipped to handle it from the factory.if not would you be willing to point me to some compatible bios?

Which G72GX? The bestbuy version does not support quad CPUs. The x9100 should work in both versions.

i know that if you got it from anywhere other than best buy you can upgrade to a q9000 i dont know about a x9100 though....i only know this because i've read through this entire thread. you should probly do the same if you want general info on the g72gx. i highly recommend buying it by the way. runs games great for the price.

No ill be playing a game and the screen just goes white....like ? that jsut started happening like a few weeks ago. But as i said its very random, might happen once to 3 ties a day or none at all, and when it goes white the only way to get it back to normal is to move the lid back and forth. I jsut want to know whats causing it and and if its sumnthing i can fix myself.

thanx for the help, ive had mine for about a year now and had a problem with it running hot so i took it apart and noticed the removeable processor,(sweet) so your saying i shouldent even need a bios change? also i do have the bestbuy version (bought for wife for school) what mxm version does it support, i know its proprietary asus slot but i guarantee i can find a more powerful asus card for a good price. just need to know slot type also, there was apiece of tape blocking the top half of the heatsink put there by the factory(why would they put that there, design to fail?) pulled it off and it runs soooooo much cooler and quieter

asus 602 bios= trash.............so i was looking at their website today and noticed some new bios 602,i am on 303 right now.......long story short....overclocking was reduced to a max of 10% and only 3 choices, had to re-install my nvidia drivers after i rolled back to 303 and my wireless would not work, went back to 303, everything is good now except the wireless stays on all the time,no way to turn it off unless i disable it manually through windows 7 which is also garbage the entire communication setup is not power-user or dumb-user friendly, i want my xp back :(

Off to a local ASUS authorized service center for this blazing hot GPU. Get's to 100-102C with in 5-10 minutes of playing SC2 or Company of Heroes. Idles at 75-79C.

Never had this problem with my old BB version. Very disappointed in the A1. Hopefully, a re-paste or replacement GPu will fix this.

They should have it back to me by Wednesday or Thursday.

    Cheers,

Good Luck....Hope it works!! Honestly, each laptop is different even though the components have the same name, some are better quality than others....just the luck of the draw sometimes...

Hey guys, just purchased a G72GX last week and it finally showed up on my front door this Monday. After gleefully ripping open the packaging like a little kid on Christmas I threw SC2 on it and got pumped to play.

Once I loaded the game up things looked great and then I moved my mouse and the screen started flickering and the desktop eventually came up with the error in the bottom left 'Nvidia kernel has crashed and recovered'

Seems that anything requiring 3d rendering kills whatever driver I have installed in 2-15 seconds (even the rotating NVidia logo in the control panel causes the thing to crash).

I've gone through almost all of the WHQL drivers on Nvidia's site and no matter which is installed the driver crashes when rendering 3d.

It seems like the only thing I haven't tried to do is flash the BIOS... but it seems like I have the most up to date one at this point so I don't know the point.

    Some other useful information:
    BIOS - 0602
    Current video driver - 186.19
    Idle CPU temp - 44C
    Idle GPU temp - 65C

GPU temp doesn't spike more than a couple degrees when the driver fails.

    Any ideas?

BIOS 0602 is current so it's not that. Temps look good. I'm using the nvidia BETA drivers. Perhaps try those (but it really sounds like Windows is messed up)

Are you using the Anti-Virus software that came with it? If so un-install it and use something more benign like the Microsoft Security Essentials or one of the others recommended by members here.

Was it used, refurb, loaded with Windows etc. Did it come with the restore DVDs? If so you can try a full system restore.

    Cheers,

Was a refurb from Newegg and was loaded with Windows. I've done the system restore from the ASUS DVDs that came with it. Even with stock settings it crashes on the Nvidia logo. It doesn't strike me as a hardware issue because it doesn't even have enough time to overheat.

I'll give the latest beta drivers a shot as they're pretty much the only ones I haven't tried yet.

    Update:
Grabbed latest Beta drivers and still no dice. Looks like when I modify the NVidia performance vs quality bar so its all the way on the performance side the driver crashes become less frequent (every 30s to a min instead of every 3-10s) or sometimes don't crop up at all.
