Has anyone experienced issues that the fan just doesnt stop running. When i turn my comp on everything loads i let it sit and as soon as it gets into windows the fan turns on. I leave it and it still is on, is it supposed to be like that? Its brand new so i was just wondering. Also have you experienced a lot of overheating near the keyboard where the RAM is, to the left of the esc, tab key, etc right down those keys. I havent felt it get that hot before.

I did a clean install as well. I am thinking of doing it again to clean off the machine once more but I will wait until I get an SSD drive.

Which SSD drive did you get? I am going to do the same and use the 500GB as a data drive. Did you buy the bracket or just place it in the open slot?

In the G72 I stuck in a 64GB SSDnow V series Kingston drive. They work well and the price is good. It holds Windows, Office, assorted everyday programs and whatever game I happen to be playing at the time. Everything else goes on the spindle drive.

Thanks! That should be big enough for me. Steam games take up so much space though - :p I usually only have one installed at a time though.

I have the best buy model G72GX. Some questions I have for the community.

    1. Can I upgrade the processor on this rig? If so, which one?

    2. Any good recomendations for Blue-Ray Drive? Where to buy?

    3. Can it be upgraded to DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2?

    4. Mod to install Bluetooth? Can it be done like on the Gateway P7811 FX Laptop did?

Thanks for all the help guys!

    1. Yes you can, but I am unsure which proccessor.
    2. If I remember correctly this blu-ray player will work in the laptop. Just take off the outer part of the existing one and put it on this one.

Amazon.com: LG Electronics CT10N Slim SATA Blu-Ray Combo Drive - Retail: Electronics

    3. Not sure about that.

    4. I'm not one to mod something like that. I bought the Targus Bluetooth dongle and it works great. You won't be able to close the side flap with it in the USB slot but it works nicely.

My G72GX(Best Buy model) idles at up to 83C and at load gets over 100C. Has anyone else had this problem? I have dealt with all the sleep issues and my screen went out, and now after being replaced once I am still having GPU issues. I have spent as much time getting it repaired as using it. Any ideas?

Over the past few days, the laptop has become erratically slow, barely managing to run crysis on all high, where before it could run it with ease. ?

You will need to post more info as there is a million and one things that cause a computer to run slow.

But first I would reinstall your drivers and update the latest and remove any programs you have recently installed.

See if that works for you.

And don't forget to look under the startup tab of msconfig to see just how much crap, and maybe new stuff you don't know about yet, is loading when windows starts. Mosts computers I see that run slow are because of all the startup junk.

1.) Yes, but if it came with C2D that's all you can upgrade to - higher clock C2D (I know this is true on the BB version I have - not certain on the others)

    2.) ebay, I bought several from $59 - $89 http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/480812-cheap-bluray-drive-our-asus-laptops.html#post6214146

    3.) No, DDR2 only

4.) Yes, others have done it. I bought the module but could never find the cable. There are a couple of teardown guides floating around here.

    Best of luck,

I have a G72GX-RBBX05 for 9 months now and I am wondering what the best upgrades are for it if needed. These are the specs according to speccy:

CPU: Core 2 Duo P8700 (I certain the T9900/X9100 are the top upgrades.)
Graphics Card: nVidia Geforce GTX 260M
RAM: 6 GB Dual Channel @ 332MHz 5-5-5-15 (GB is maxed but I've heard that the MHz can be improved.)

Second question: Has anyone thought about making videos for upgrading this particular or similar brand of computer?

I followed this same method. What I did was to scrape what I could off with my fingernail. I then used a small ball of the old tape to help pull off the tape and remaining residue from the other heat sinks. For the heat sinks that I couldn't get completely clean, I soaked those in nail polish remover and then repeated the process. Once clean, I rinsed them in water to get the nail polish remover off, then dried them before applying the Sekisui tape.

I can confirm that the Sekisui tape will hold much better. The original tape will hold for a bit, but then some will start to let go over time. The Sekisui tape melts as it's heated and turns into a glue-like substance. Since applying the Sekisui tape, not one of the heat sinks has come loose on either of my laptops, (G71GX & G72GX, Best Buy models).

just bought the p8700 version GX72 as my first laptop....ever. Before this I had a couple desktops, but wanted slightly more manueverability. Still figuring out what this beast can do o_O. current thoughts: it's sexy, it runs decent...keyboard feels a little SPED though. But overall a fun toy for $721 xD. *hums and digs around for optimisation info*

    Hey everyone,

I need some help. I have the G72gx best buy version, and i recently bought the Kingston 64GB SSD the laptop kit,
Kingston - SSDNow V-Series 64GB Internal Serial ATA II Hard Drive for Desktops - Gun Metal Silver - SNV425-S2BD/64GB

and i wanted some help on how to install this kit, because i really am kinda lost. I would like to make the drive my primary hard drive. So far i have the SSD installed into the laptop, in the secondary HDD slot, and i dont know much after that.

Please if someone can point me in the right direction or help me out, it would be great.

No one can help? Sent it to Asus and they said the refreshed the BIOS and tested it and that it never got above 88C. I asked them if that was at load and they said no(seriously who thinks 88C at idle is ok). So I will get it back tomorrow and I am betting the issue will still be there.

You need to go into the BIOS to change the Boot Order Priority to the SSD Drive Slot to be higher than the HDD Drive Slot. I do this to get my hard drive to boot before the CD/DVD Drive.

I was updating the BIOS using asus update, it could`t verify the operation, but it apparenttly cleared the old BIOS and copied the new one. I restarted and... nothing, the pc does absolutely nothing, just a black screen, no POST, no nothing.
I was wondering what could I do?
How do I restart the CMOS?, anybody has the service manual for this model.
Any help would be really appreciated, I really need my pc.

As far as I know if you have absolutely no response at all when pressing the power button, just a totally black screen, no LED's, no activity of any kind then you unfortunately have a bricked laptop.

I've never done it but you can try taking it apart and removing the cmos battery for a decent length of time. (Try five minutes, first and hours later.) then see if you get any activity at all but it doesn't seem like it would.

Try running on AC power only, no battery pack also.

    Good luck.

Hey guys. I did what balane recommended and ran a clean install of windows 7. However, I now have no wireless driver. I installed the wireless console 3 and the driver from asus site but I still get nothing. It wasn't much if an issue because I usually use a lan cable at my desk but I'm leaving to go back to uni in a few weeks and they'll just have wireless. Any ideas?

That's a first. Usually when a BIOS update fails to verify, the motherboard could be damaged. This is the main reason why when updating the BIOS, you are not overclocking, you've backed everything up, and NEVER turn the computer off until it is complete in which it should restart itself or use the Operating System's flash utility (WinFlash) over the BIOS flash utility. It also important that you only update the BIOS if you need to.

lol, sorry. I confused two posters. But congrats on never being bricked, that has to be a relief. ;=)

I can't speak for everybody but I like to keep things as lean as possible on my computers. I never install any type of wireless connection third party software beyond the driver.

I recommend that you un-install every piece of software related to your wifi hardware and connection.

Then go into device manager and uninstall the drive. (With the box checked to delete the software.)

The click Action and Scan for Hardware Changes.

See if Windows has the driver software for it already, let it install.

If Windows does not have the software for it then direct it to the Asus downloaded file which you extracted somewhere. (Even if it is an executable file from Asus you can usually still extract it with Winrar or similar.)

Let that driver install and then don't install anything else at all regarding your wifi, most people don't need all that junk.

Then see where you stand with it.

My computer has never told me if the switch is on or off and really has no idea such a switch even exists.

I had the same problem here. I not overclocked my laptop, I had 3 SO in my amazing G72GX (Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.4 and Snow Leopard), and the problem appears random.

To minimize this, I found some tips (put bright on max, start/stop the overclock), but I really want to fix this issue.

    I accept any idea.

    EDIT
I put the ideas about the BSOD, (Dox, System tools, etc), and aparently the problem is solved.

    EDIT2
Bad news, the problem still happens.

    My computer is still bricked.
I completely disassembled it to find the bios battery, after I did it I realized I didn't have to do that because the power cable of the bios battery is accessible by just releasing the back cover but like you cannot see where the cable goes I had to disassemble the laptop completely with the help of a video of the disassemble of a g71gx, which is almost exactly the same ( Formula1 movies - Part 3: Asus G71GX Disassembly tutorial to remove graphics card. videos). I have pictures of the process if anyone can find them useful I'll post them.
Sadly I left the computer with the BIOS battery disconnected and without the laptop battery, but the result is still the same, No video, just the sound of the system fan.
Is a real problem because I don't live in the US (I live in Colombia) so I have no access to an asus service center or similar.

    Hey guys,

Are there any detailed teardown guides for this laptop? I've been looking for a while now. I need access to the switch that tells the computer if the screen is closed or not.

EDIT: I found a teardown guide for an Asus G71GX, which is very similar. Just so people know. And I fixed the problem I had!

Try pushing FN+F2 then when the graphic on the bottom center of the screen comes on (looks like a little cell phone tower) click on it with your mouse. Make sure the checkmark is in the box.

For the CPU, it depends if you got the Quad Core or Dual Core. I have the Dual Core, so that would be the Core 2 Duo T9900 or the Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100. The T9900 has a few more features, but the X9100 has an unlocked multiplier that makes overclocking easier. The quad core's best cpu is probably the Core 2 Quad QX9300. The graphics card is a little trickier, but the stock nVidia GeForce GTX 260M should handle almost any of today's games. Crysis and its expansions should be the few challenges. I don't know what it can be upgraded to but I suspect that the 285M as the best upgrade.

Hey guys, I signed up for this forum because I am in desperate need of help for my Asus G72GX, as I fear that I have either purchased a faulty product, or that there is something horribly wrong that can be fixed.

For four months, I've run this laptop, and for about a month, I was satisfied with it. Unfortunately, lag began to take hold of it while I was utilizing it for gaming purposes, though I played nothing more graphically demanding than Fallout 3 or World of Warcraft, and these games would become unplayable after about an hour of play.

After this period of time, the laptop went from lagging to crashing, a Blue Screen of Death meeting me randomly whenever I decided to play a game. (By now, I had moved on to more graphically demanding games, such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Bioshock 2).

My numerous crashes yielded multiple results, though the only ones with information as to what had happened were:
    Driver_irql_less_than_not_equal
    and
    Memory_management.

The crashing and lagging eventually led to me getting fed up with the laptop, so I sent it in to Geek Squad situated in Best Buy, unfortunately, after they shipped the laptop off for several weeks, they returned it, claiming that it had been a graphical issue, and that it was now fixed.

Of course, I shouldn't have trusted the mediocre services that the Geek Squad offered. Surely enough, the next day, my laptop had gone back to it's lagging and crashing ways, and rather than trust Geek Squad with the laptop again, I decided I'd hold out for a miracle.

Since I'm here right now, you can see that none have come as of yet.

I have also called to Asus's technical support, though they have been less than helpful with helping me troubleshoot, as they simply handwave the problem and say "Send it in."

I've come to you guys in a last ditch effort to figure out WHAT, exactly, could be wrong with this laptop, and if I can actually fix it without sending it in.

Thank you for your time, hopefully I receive some responses to this.

Hi everyone, I have the G72GX-A1 package I picked up from Newegg back in Feb.

I'm not sure about the heat issues with this thing. I have read the posts about adding the copper and also thought about adding arctic freeze thermal pasted under the GPU. Seeing as I am still under warranty, I'm concerned that it may not be worth me adding that paste should something go wrong. Is this advisable?

I also have questions about the heat range. It seemed that for the first couple of months, the video playing and encoding and gaming that I have done never really reached past the mid 80s, and now it idles around 85-88* C. I could swear the temps never were that high before. Is there only one fan in there or is there a second one that could fail? Any other failed parts that can cause this?

Have you tried recovering your Wndows from hidden partition or clean install. Maybe it's not hardware but some driver conflict. You should try this.

Is your fan spinning? Very strange that temps went so high so fast. Thermal paste usually degrade gradually. If fan is ok, you can consider thermal paste change.

What program do you suggest for manually setting the speed of the fans?

You can't set fan speed on G72.At least I don't know program that will change fan speed.

I invested in the NZXT Cryo and it will adjust temperatures a few degrees, but I am still concerned at how hot this thing is getting. The fan spins and blows air, but one fan for this C2Q and the GTX260 I don't think is cutting it.

I have an active RMA with Asus, I think I'm going to send it out tomorrow and let them check it out, maybe re-do the thermal paste? I'm ok with doing it myself but the warranty will be over if I do, correct? Do you think if I send them my arctic silver that they will use it? Hahah

Another thing that pisses me off with this machine is the keyboard. It double taps frequently, and it gets annoying quick.

    BUMP

TheMute, Those are the latest official NVIDIA drivers for the GPU.

Hey guys, it's been awhile. I installed the DOX drivers awhile back and ever since then I've been enjoying my laptop. I appreciate all the help and activity on this thread. I have the same question as TheMute. Has anyone tried these new drivers vs the DOX drivers? I read a month or so ago that they increased performance on several games, including Bad Company 2.

@ren3g7gade What RAM chips did you use to get 12GB of RAM? Will any 4GB chip work or is the Best Buy version limited to 6GB of RAM max?
