Since I didn't save any of the temps from before I added the heatsinks, it's hard to give exact numbers. I can tell you that I've overclocked the CPU with SetFSB to 2.99 Ghz with no issues and stopped there. However, while the TurboGear 15% increase gives me a bit of a performance boost in the games I play. I didn't notice any extra boost from OC'ing to 2.99. Therefore I use the 15% boost and am having no issues while using no external cooling.

I have also tried overclocking the GPU to original stock, (550/950/1375) and it was a bit hotter than CPU OC'd but, again with the games I'm playing right now, I don't see a performance boost. So, I run the down-clocked speeds, (500/800/1250). When I get a chance I'll post a screenshot of my temps with CPUID HWMonitor.

What drivers in particular do you want to update? The graphics drivers you are talking about (Dox) are a somewhat optimized blend of changes from the stock drivers that NVIDIA releases. I have not had much success with running stock drivers in the past as they cause my GTX260M to downclock when playing games. If you intend to play a lot of games, I'd consider investing in a good notebook cooler and installing Dox drivers. The two are not related, just a good practice in my opinion. You can see what my graphics card runs @ in my sig.

If you have any specific drivers you think need to be updated just ask and I am sure someone in this thread (incl. me) can point you in the right direction. The best thing to do is go out to the ASUS support site and download the latest drivers for you model.

My temperatures for load and idle are in my signature. I'd say the combination of the copper ramsinks (attached using Sekisui Thermal Tape, not the crap that comes with the blocks by default) along with a my NZXT Cryo dropped my temps for my gpu from 91 max down to 79 max and my cpu from 60 max down to 49 max. I can't guarantee the same results for you but its worth a shot. I also undervolt my cpu which reduces the temperatures. I also have AS5 on both my CPU and GPU to help cool them down.

    Hope that helps.

I use HWMonitor to check all of my temps and I use gpu-z to check my gpu clock speeds.

I use cpugenie ($, 30 day full version trial) to undervolt my cpu, but rmclock (free) is also available.

I have a couple questions for G72GX owners.

    1. It takes about 5 seconds to open up firefox from a fresh restart, is that normal?
    2. Is your right click sit higher than your left click?
    3. Do you get an oddly high ping compared to other computers on speed test?

to reduce the cpu temps by running a lower voltage to it, hence increasing the longevity of the component.

Here is a guide with lots of information and answers

yes, depends on whether the dvd is copy protected or not. if it is not you can copy it no problem. if it is copy protected, there are people who have found ways to copy it but thats not something we discuss on this forum.

That would not be the problem. I am running low on space and I want to put things away, but normal 4 gigs DVD discs will take too much space on my desk. Maybe I should just put another hard drive.

Last time I tried to burn something with the laptop was one of those DVD discs for back-up. It ruined the disc, so I am weary of burning more stuff without knowing this thing can handle it.

I prefer to buy an external usb or nas hdd solutions to backup data. seems like that is the easiest way for me. Also I normally use Nero to burn data and I haven't had issues with it.

You might have had the backup problem for the following reason. The media you were using was not good quality combined with the fact that the speed at which you burned the data to the disc was not supported by the media, even though it said it was. I tend to burn data to discs @ a slower rate that what is advertised because you never know how the burner & media will work together.

    Food for thought....

    Good luck with the backup!

I have been thinking about trying those Dox drivers, but I forgot how to install them exactly.

    Could you explain please? :p

ed: how can double layer dvds cost 3.5 frigging dollars each!? that is INSANE

Good quality dual layer media cheap (supermediastore.com)

Here is how I update my drivers.

    1. Install Guru3D DriverSweeper
    3. Reboot windows into safe mode and uninstall all Nvidia software, including PhysX, System/Performance tools, Drivers etc.
    4. Run DriverSweeper and have it clean up all Nvidia display driver files.
    5. Reboot, windows should load with a default vga driver.
    6. Download and install Dox 195.62 drivers
    7. Download and install the latest PhysX software
    8. Download and install Nvidia System Tools 6.06
    9. Go into the NVIDIA Control Panel, accept the user agreement for the Performance Option.
    10. Set your clock speeds to Custom and use 550/950/1375
    11. X out of the screen and you will be prompted to save these settings and use them as your defaults. Select Yes.

That should be about all there is to it.

    Holler if you have questions...

Those are the true stock settings for the GTX260M. If you are getting blue screens @ those values, scale it back to the original ASUS settings of 500/800/1250.

I usually use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall all NVIDIA video-related software first and then I run DriverSweeper. I would not check chipset because that is not related to video drivers, only the display and PhysX.

Did you first try uninstalling all the bloatware on the laptop? That's the first thing I would do. Also it doesn't hurt to try Dox's drivers. I do not blue screen with those drivers installed, and I did blue screen with stock drivers. That was my experience but I can't guarantee that the same will apply for you. If that fails, I would consider returning the laptop to best buy and either getting another one or getting a different one like the G73.

Yeah I had that problem and I think I know what it is. Did you happen to run windows update and select the network one under optional updates?

I did this and I couldn't get my wireless back. I even restored back a few days and it would not work. I had to rebuild my entire machine.

You have to turn off the WLAN switch at the right side of the laptop, then shut it down. Now you have to turn the laptop on (rebooting doesn't always work) and when windows starts, turn the WLAN switch on. At least that's what I do when that has happenned to me and it works every time.

    Hope it helps.

This is probably coming late but i would go with the Asus G72 we originally went with (1) G72 and 1 G51 and the G51 had the overheating issue due to the fact the outtake vent was on the bottom of the computer and there was a Wifi OS issue with Windows 7 so we ended up getting (2) G72 my fiance uses hers for WOW and i play Battlefield Bad Company 2, Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Days Of Defeat, Mass Effect etc. With the NVIDIA tool that allows you to overclock the GPU i have been running smoothly in all games at the native resolution of 1600x900 on high at around 57-64 FPS in Crysis i have been running around 30-35 on High Settings, and 25-30 on Very High.

I think it may be a problem with my router since my brother can't play his PS3 online wireless. I guess I will have to look into buying a new one now, Any recommendation? Is there a router that you can press open for the Nat type?

Asus states that this laptop has 3 memory slots, just opened mine, and I have found 4 slots !!! with the first memory card bent upwards ?? and the empty slot just below that...

I used PC Wizard 2010, and it states 4 slots as well ??

Anybody out there encountered the same thing??

I have a DGL-4500 and I love it. No problems with any of my consoles (360, PS3 and Wii) or mobile devices, and good signal throughout the house. Make sure you are using the latest firmware release. In fact, I use the PS3 to stream Netflix almost everyday and it is super smooth, no dropped packets, signal loss or resetting the router. The little OLED UI on the router is nice too!

I had problem with wireless, that after waking it up from sleep mode, my wireless module was turned off. If I pressed Fn+F2, it just opended that small window ,that should show me blue "radio antenna" just to tell me it has been turned on and dissapear in 1 sec. Problem was, that it used to show me only as it is still turning it off. Pressed once, turned off, pressed again, still turning off (only Bluetooth was working fine). I found I can solve it with manualy mouseclick on that icon, so I had to press Fn+F2, and then quick mouseclick that icon to turn my wifi on.

Soon i found another solution, which is working fine for me, Turn the Bluetooth adapter off in Bios. Fn+F2 is not starting Bluetooth now, and it just start Wi-Fi now, and works perfectly.

Still, after waking laptop up, i have to start Wi-Fi, even i has been started when i was sleeping it

PS: I have Dropframe issue too, rly annoying.

PS2: Sorry for my bad English, I am quite young.

I just undervolted my cpu with cpu genie, i was wondering what some other people got there voltages down to? I am at 1.050 across the board and that is as low as genie will let me take it. I can unlock the voltages and get it lower but when i do and check it on cpu-z it doesn't show a drop. Also if i lower it and run the test it always passes but then when i go to exit the test cpu genie crashes... I am kinda new to undervolting so i am making sure i am doing everything right.

last statement is for ren3g7ade. your temps are ridiculously low. i have done the copper blocks and changed the paste on everything but my cpu. also i just undervolted. what was the ambient temperatures when you tested cuz i cannot get near your temps.

Has anyone had problems with the lit keyboard? I can tell the lights are fine as it lights up just as I turn on the laptop, but they turn off shortly after.

Is there some sort of setting that I messed with? because I can't recall doing anything like it.

let me start by saying hello!

im brand new to laptops and also to this forum, so forgive me for asking dumb questions!

i just picked up my first laptop yesterday, the G72! so far so good!

    except!!!:

75 processes running in the background! whats the easiest way to remove the non essentials?? one by one?? will removing the rediculous amounts of bloat ware reduce the number of proceses?? i wanna get my game on and would like them as low as possible! if anyone could help me out, or point me to a previous post/set of instructions i would greatly appreciate it!!

also, is it necessary to download the newesr drivers? and if so, which ones?? any other advice for setting up my new machine would also be highly appreciated!

if anyone has any motocross or helicopter related questions, id be happy to help! lol thats about as far as my expertise goes!

    cheers!!

New to the forums, but ive had my G72 for since around the last week of march and ive gotta say i love it for the most part, the one thing im not fond of is the touchpad everytime i type something the cursor just goes nuts cause of my hands brushing the touchpad. Ive been having trouble finding a decent carry case big enough for it though, the last one i tried was just a tad too small. Nothing too major and for the most part i love the machine.

This will fit your laptop with ease. I have 2 of them. I got the first one from Best Buy, but they don't sell them anymore. The second one I got from Amazon.com, (Link below) and I love them. If you chose to purchase one from another site, just make sure it's not the 15.4 model as the the two backpacks look identical but, the 15.4 backpack costs a bit less.

I can fit the laptop, a cooler, notebooks, external hard drive, microphone, mouse, game controller, Bose Headphones in their case, in ear headphones, DVD's and other discs in their cases, power pack and all my other cords/cables...and there's room for more! I carry all that and the backpack seems to handle it well. After a year it doesn't seem to be falling apart and is comfortable to wear. I usually just sling it over one shoulder to carry it. I was also able to carry both a G71 and G72 in the same backpack at the same time before i purchased the second bag.

This thread is dying, people need to post some recent upgrades or scores or something. Don't let the g72 thread die just cuz of the g73, I know some of you guys are still modifying and pushing this thing so post about it!

anytime i go over the 550/950/1375 clocks 3dmark won't even run the first test, it just crashes. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Also my Nvidia clocks reset everytime i restart and i have to change them back. anyway to fix this?

I run 1.050V for all multipliers except the highest, which I run @ 1.067V just to ensure stability. I also ran the super long test they had recommended and those were the voltages that were recommended. As for as the temps go, I guess I lucked out. All hardware is different and thankfully I didn't get a laptop that heats up too much :)

I have had mine for a few months now, and it would be great, if it didn't occasionally (every other week or so) BSOD and then do a semi-endless reboot loop.

It does the "BOOM" sound effect bios post screen, goes blank, and then repeats that anywhere from several times in a row to several hours in a row.

    Yaayyyyy :(

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, it is actually the second one in a row that I have had do this, the first one (thankfully?) was physically damaged and replaced under an accidental damage replacement plan. Unfortunately my Best Buy warranty doesn't cover "software" issues. Thoughts?

That sounds more like a virus or something similar. I use a combination of ESET NOD32 anti-virus, SpywareBlaster, Spybot S&D, MalewareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware and since Windows 7 comes with it, Windows Defender. I never get any virus', trojans, spyware etc. I am also somewhat conservative about which sites I visit. All but NOD32 are free programs that you can get from filehippo.com. I believe NOD32 has a free trial that you can get at that site, or choose another program that you pay for. You could also choose from one of the more popular and reliable free anti-virus programs from that site. In addition, I use ZoneAlarm Pro firewall which I pay for, and surf the web with Firefox and the AdBlockPlus add-on.

If your issue is virus', trojans, malware, spyware, adware etc. this should help. At the least I would run a good anti-virus and SpywareBlaster, which the latter doesn't scan, but loads a set of definitions that will help protect you when you surf the web. I hope this helps. Good luck! :)

Have you considered fresh Win7 install? That should help, if it is software issue.

Your settings rise the FSB to 1284 MHz from standard 1066 MHz, maybe this is to much. I think, you also have DDR2 800 MHz memory/RAM. The resulting memory timings maybe also be too much for this RAM. Enable "Downgrade DRAM timing" in "TurboGear Function" options in BIOS setup, if possible as you have a QUAD core. This results in reduced timings of the memory.

I got the quad core version of this laptop with the thermal paste upgrade from Gentech and everything about it is perfect except for the fan noise. While it isn't as bad as my previous HP, the blowing isn't as quiet as others in this thread lead me to believe. Is it because it's a quad core that mine is louder than most, or is there something off about my system? BTW, I removed the bottom cover to allow my system to air out a little and I do not currently use a laptop cooler...
