I could be mistaken but i am 95% sure the slot is not the same. Just like you can't run DDR2 where DDR1 use to be.

It has been awhile since i have read this thread but if i am not mistaken it should help with the utilities/bloatware. Also you can find the links to drivers throughout this thread depending if you want factory drivers or Dox. I know it is a different comp but same basic stuff.

You can probably find everything you need on Asus.com-may not need much of anything beyond Nvidia's newest drivers from their site, and Microsoft's drivers for everything else. I can't remember if I put any extra drivers on my Asus when I installed 7. Of course I don't use the trackpad or wifi, but if I did I'd probably just install the drivers from the manufacturers of those parts.

Which chipset drivers did you use when you installed 7? I didn't see a chipset driver on asus-com for the g72x and os win7 x64... i found some for the g71x those seemed to work for me.

Are you using the DOX driver?

I did a clean install and then I installed some of the "bloatware" from the CD. I am thinking of doing another clean install and not installing anything, just to see how it goes.

Everything worked if I remember correctly after a fresh install.

Problem is I have Ubuntu running on it now and don't feel like messing with all of that stuff too.

There is a diagram on the page I am linking that shows the position of the groove for ddr, ddr2 and ddr3. They are all different and so unless the board specifically accommodates for both types you can only use one or the other

    DDR3 (Wiki Page)

Our laptops use DDR2 for system ram and DDR3 for the GPU dedicated memory.

Hi all...Im a usual on Anandtech and [H]ardforum...but decided to ask my question here as no one over there ever answers questions that I have about the G72 (probably because no one owns one lol).

Anyways...I have some basic question as I believe mnguyenpdx already kinda covered.

I reinstalled Windows 7 from the original Home edition to Ultimate x64...however, I now dont know which drivers to install to just make everything just work properly.

I have the driver disk that comes with the laptop...however Im hesitant to just installing everything as Ive done that before and one of the drivers or applications kept locking my laptop up...I couldnt pinpoint which one it was as theres about 100 that installed (lol) so I had to reinstall Windows AGAIN...sigh...

SO...does anyone here know what drivers need to be installed for things like the Fn keys to work, for the webcam to be functional, Creative EAX control panel, and some other things like TurboGear? Ive tried getting these things online but none of the drivers on their website seem to work...every 64-bit driver Ive gotten from Asus wont install because Im not using a "64-bit OS" even though thats what I installed...

Also, I need the sleep key to work majorly...I dont know if its sleep mode (as I turned it off in Windows Power Options) but I leave the laptop on overnight to download torrents and demos and what not...and Ill wake up in the morning and it wont boot back up...like the 5 blue bottons at the top are lit up...as are the lights on the front of the laptop...but nothing else will turn on...the fan is going, CDs seem to load when inserted (you can hear them seeking and spinning) but the only way to get the computer "on" is to just turn it off and then back on...
I dont quite understand this issue as Sleep mode is turned off...so its like the PC will just be working then just become unactive and unresponsive even though its still on...I dont exactly know what happens as Im sleeping and it only seems to do it after a couple of hours or so.

I dont know...is it software or hardware? I cant tell...

Anyways, all help or what not is appreciated! Thanks!

I hope somebody on this forum has the answer to this. I purchased a G72GX with factory Blu-Ray player, however, it appears there isn't any software in the build to support Blu-Ray playback. I did see that WinDVD is available for download on the Asus support site, but only for Vista (and I don't know if it is even a version which would support Blu-Ray, anyway).

Anyone have any luck getting something through Asus? So far I've been told they're working on the issue and don't currently have any software available to support Blu-Ray. I guess I'm not really too excited about purchasing third-party software to run this drive, I figured I paid Asus to give me a machine that runs the hardware I bought. I'm actually taken aback by what support has told me. I've heard of driver issues, but never anything like "Sorry, we shipped the machine without any software to run that component."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    I use this:

    http://www.digistor.com/ArcSoft-Total-Media-Extreme-FE2-Full-Blu-ray-DVD-Edition

For $20 it works well. On my G50, G72 & G73 I had to install it, reboot, uninstall it and reinstall it, run it once for the update to pop up and install. Seems to be the only way it works with Windows 7 but it's a lot cheaper than some of the other solutions.

Still occasionally asks to update and then tells me it's already up to date but it plays every Blu-ray I've thrown at it.

    Cheers,

If you go to http://support.asus.com and pick notebook, model G72, and windows 7 x64 as your OS, under the downloads section, it will give you all the latest drivers to download. That is what I did when I did my re-install. The asus atk utilities will help get your function keys etc working and directconsole should allow you to turn on/off the lights. Sleep seems to work correctly for me with all the drivers and such installed, so I don't know what you can do about that issue.

Thanks for the reply, I've supposedly got a senior Asus engineer calling me back on Monday. I'll be interested to hear how it is happens that a computer is shipped without the software necessary to run one of its drives. If I get no satisfaction, I'll be trying the ArcSoft product. I'll be sure to report what happens.

    Thanks again.

Most stuff you won't need anything but Microsoft's drivers. DON'T install Creative's garbage. Not having that is one reason to do a clean install. The web cam will probably be picked up by Windows Update, etc.

Use the software someone mentioned. If it says Vista, that's good. Vista and 7 are almost the same OS.

Judgement, does it just do it when you wake it up from Sleep? Mine use to do that too, just disable sleep mode. That is the only way to fix it unless a real fix has come out in the last month

That's how the sleep glitch goes. It will work fine for a few minutes, then slow to a crawl.

Just don't let it sleep. Always shut down. That or restart before you play a game.

I use a Logitech G9 mouse, NZXT Cryo LX cooler, and an Osprey Elroy messenger bag.

You know, ever since I reformatted, I haven't had any problems. No wireless issues, no BSODs, no nothing. Since all of these issues were present from the first boot, I think that my laptop was shipped to me with a botched OS install. I think I understand now why they always say you should reformat a new computer after you buy it.

    Hello everyone!

I've been reading this forum for some time now after getting some issues with my own G72GX laptop. At first I started to have fps drops for 20 sec or so ingame but I temporarily solved the issue with RivaTuner by forcing constant performance 3D in the settings.
Now it has started to act up again and my GPU temperature spikes to up to 95C(!) and the game goes slow for 20 seconds as before but now it's much more frequent. I do not have a cooler but I use a pad for my lap to not let it rest on my legs. I've installed the newest drivers with driversweep, updated my bios, the force performance option is still on in RivaTuner even.

Any other suggestions that you can give me? This is unbearable, I can't even play a simple game like League of Legends without the fps dropping and makes the game unplayable within minutes.

Not sure if you tried this yet but, I was having FPS drops and lag spikes every 5 minutes in Warhammer. After some monitoring, I noticed that the temps. were spiking at the same time. Turns out that I just needed to take off the bottom panel and clean the dust out of the fan with compressed air. There wasn't a ton of dust but, enough to slow the fan to a point that it didn't cool the laptop properly. I haven't had a problem since.

There's a youtube video that goes through this, step by step with an Asus G51 laptop. You can take the faceplate off and replace it with the one that came with your laptop. All the info. is there. You can get the Blu-Ray Drive, (LG model # CT10N) at amazon.com:

How stupid of me to not even think of that! :p
It still reaches high temperatures around 90C-ish when playing for longer periods of time but never any fps drops or anything like that anymore!
I'll start cleaning it out with regular intervals if the problem resurfaces ^^

90 is still a bit high, even if the cpu or gpu is overclocked. If you OC them both, then maybe not. I also looked over the simple solution before finally trying it. I just didn't think that would be the problem since the laptop wasn't that old. Anyway, I just got some brass heatsinks and did that mod. like ren3g7gade.
    His pic>>> http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525X832&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4047%2F4264568725_96781a902c_b.jpg&sref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.notebookreview.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D453437%26page%3D61

I have a cooler with 2 fans. Surprisingly, I found that it didn't help cool the laptop. I flipped it upside down so that it sucked air out and it actually cooled the laptop a bit more. I monitored the temps. with both SpeedFan and CPUID HWMonitor. Both programs were in sync. Maybe I'll try one of the NZXT Cryo Coolers soon.

Have you reinstalled the OS or are you using stock as it came out of the box?

My laptop only reaches those temperatures when it has bad circulation, after awhile I take it off my pad and put it so that the underside is mostly free and it doesn't ever go over 90C. I was thinking of buying a cooler as well but I think I probably should try brass heatsinks first.
Could you give me some details on how much that cost you, and is it easy?

Copper heatsinks are very easy to apply, just take the backing off of the tape and apply them. Some people buy the Sekisui tape and replace the tape that comes on the heatsinks. A small amount of Sekisui will only be a couple of dollars. I purchased some, but for now am using the tape that came on them. If they start to fall off, then I'll switch. I followed the picture from ren3g7ade when applying them.

As for price, they come in packages of 8. You'll need 3 pkg's, (24 heatsinks). Some will be very inexpensive and charge a few bucks for shipping, others will cost a couple dollars more and have free shipping. Either way you go, expect to pay about $15 total.

I have 2 laptops and purchased heatsinks for each from different sellers. This is the seller that sent them the quickest, about a week. However, both sellers sent them fast. They all seem to come from Hong Kong.

Could you point me to which ones you bought (so I don't get the wrong ones) and maybe provide some comments on how they are working on your current laptop?
I greatly appreciate all the help, quite new to the whole thing of modifying a laptop.

My bad, everywhere I wrote, "brass" it was meant to be copper. Here is a link to the sellers copper heatsinks:
