Yea I'm kinda annoyed that our w90vps basically have dual 4850s in them

I'm not convinced yet that they are just GDDR3... I'm remaining optimistic with this computer- wish everyone else would too!

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4870-X2-Crossfire.14406.0.html

This backs up what you are seeing. Also seems the memory speed is up from 850 to 888. So this laptop should be on par or slightly below a desktop running 4850 x2 with similar specs.

That is impressive to me, but if you go in looking for 4870 x2 performance I can see where people might be disappointed. I think that guy that overclocked the CPU to 4Ghz set some unrealistic expectations.

Considering it's "confirmed" by AW, I wouldn't call that particularly reliable.

shame to hear about all the problems, but when i buy something thats just come out i would rather wait a week or two after it has come out and see what the reviews and everything say, good luck with the systems

Well, Asus' spec page does have them cards listed used GDDR3 memory (though 1024mb), and the GPU-Z also read it as GDDR3 (and yes, GPU-Z Can recognize GDDR5 memory).

Ok, so it seems that for #1 the answer would be DDR3.

What about #2 and #3 anyone care to take an educated guess?

Guess I'll stick with my thinkpad for now, and forget everything about MSI GT725, as of now they don't offer quad core Q9100 and 4870, I might as well spend more on a system thats whole lot more awesome.

Well, it is encouraging that since the fresh install of vista with my retail discs, and one-by-one installation of necessary drivers, I haven't had any lockups or freezes or bsods. I haven't tried anything intensive yet though, so we'll see what happens. I have tried alt tabbing numerous times and resizing various windows and scrolling through active webpages fast to try to incite a freeze or lockup that would have occurred under these circumstances before but have not had an issue.

From what I have seen, the most intensive testing/benchmarking anyone has done on the w90 that has been documented in this thread has been a single run through 3dmark06, and without any temp readings because there aren't any programs out there that can detect the presence of the 4870s. I'm sure people would love to find out more about its ability to handle any stress, I plan on doing another few 3dmark 06 runs but are there any available downloadable demos/benchmarking programs out there that I can run to help out?

    #2 yes

#3 Depends on a few things, with the vBIOS being the biggest difference. So, there might be more headroom if the 4870's vBIOS adds more voltage to the card compared to the 4850's vBIOS. Right now, ATi Overdrive only allows you to add +50mhz to core and memory clock on the 48xx mobility cards.

When you feel your system is stable enough or confident that the lock-up issue is a thing of the past, you could also try Vantage, but the free version (trial version) only allows you to run it once (and if you mess up a run or end it prematurely, it'll allow you to do it again until you get a result).

Someone mentioned DMC4 demo, which can be downloaded here

There's also FEAR 2, and you'll need Fraps to calculate fps for that (if you are using anything older than Catalyst 9.2, the result would be the equivalent of running on one GPU).

If anyone has links to free demos, feel free to post.

I'm gonna go through with it. Hey its only 2 grand right? For the price to performance ratio (in the notebook arena) there is nothing else that even compares (yet). I really like the fact that Asus includes the accident protection warranty as well.

I ordered mine late Friday and have been charged for it, but it hasn't been packaged or shipped.

With all the problems should I cancel my order [And can I still cancel]

Should I stick it out [put it to the side for a month or two and continue to use my sli1] or should I run?

I am currently downloading dmc4 demo for benchmarking purposes, and will try 3dmark06 again. I didn't download or attempt to install any of the cpu overclock drivers because I didn't want to push my luck, but I may in the future if things keep going smoothly. Also, I am unsure about whether I am ambitious enough to OC this gpu yet.

Well the catalyst control center has a temp reading I believe for the 4870x2, but it shows it idling at 59-60 C while I'm not doing anything and while this thing is sitting on top of my nc2000 cooler. That's pretty hot for idle imo...

Alt+Print Screen will copy the focussed window, Ctrl+Print Screen will snap the whole screen.

Sorry to hear of your problems... sounds like a graphics driver issue on the surface of it.

I just ran dmc4 demo benchmark without a hitch at 1680x1050, everything set to super high, AA off, and got these results:

    Scene1: 149.34 fps
    Scene2: 116.57 fps
    Scene3: 175.85 fps
    Scene4: 108.66 fps

It's nice to see you get your system on the right track, but I'd like to hear that someone has run something for a few hours.

I'm of the mind to keep it, but I don't NEED it. I'd hate to hear that nobody getting past the initial lock-ups has still yet to be able to put it through it's paces.

It wouldn't kill me to cancel then reorder it later in a month or so if it is going to sit anyway.

Those are pretty good scores. could you try those same settings again with 4x and 8xAA? apparently that's ATi's strong suit in this title.

I had a feeling that was the case because fps actually increases when you up the AA to 4x for DMC4 for the desktop ATi cards. Don't know why this happens though.

Um, there's only one setup available for purchase right now, and it's the one listed at newegg. The specs on that site are exactly what I got, except the resolution is 1920 x 1080, not 1900 x 1200 like the newegg page says.

If I were the product manager, I would label these 4860s because they are just 4850s (like in the GT725) with higher stock clocks. AMD/ATi did say in CES 2009 however, that there was going to be a GDDR3 and a GDDR5 version of the 4870 cards. I thought the GDDR3 version was just going to be called the 4850 because that is essentially what it is and would make sense seeing that the desktop 4850 and the 4870 use the same core, but with different clocks. Alienware announced that the 4870s they will use or upgrade to in the future will use GDDR5 memory.

The only one that was on sale in the US was the W90Vp-X1 with a T9600 and 6gb of DDR2 memory (3x2gb) for $2200...which is now sold out. haha

Do any of you understand the word Patience?

Seriously, it's been 2 days, 2 DAYS that they've had the laptop!

They're trying to sort out little bumps in the road, and all you people can do is hound them?

FFS lay off! Not to be mean but give them time! They aren't machines that know everything under the sun and can repair anything like magic.

Everyone here wants to know what's going on, what they can do, what they look like, etc. But geez you gota give them some breathing space.

    /end rant.

Patience (pā-shəns) is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset; or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast. Antonyms include hasty and impetuous.

Now lets get back to the W90vp. I have been playing Battlefield2 on my HDX18 for the last couple of days and its been great. I decided to download Crysis and give it a go. Now I am very sad. The HP HDX18 is a great laptop for basic multi-media, but I plan to keep my new laptop for at least 2-3 years and Im scared that I will not be able to play the new games that will come out during that time. The W90vp is alot more $$$, but it also includes 2 year warranty, bag, mouse and its the best out so I might just have to pull the trigger and get one. What do you guys think??? Please help as I need some support at this very sad time...
