Really really nice pictures + Rep to you striker! This is nice.

Im surprised the lock ups are happening because recent asus notebooks seemed to be fine out the box. I wonder if it has something to do with crossfire? Maybe the drivers or something.

Also just ONE QUESTION how is the speakers on this notebook?

Arg, having problems installing display drivers, I went into safe mode and uninstalled the 8.12 drivers this came with but I cannot for the life of me get the new 9.2 drivers to install... I mean this should be a quick and obvious process, but I run the catalyst setup and it doesn't show an option to install a display driver, or show any display drivers being installed in any installation process/setup method I try. Not sure what the deal is. And yes, I have the 9.2 drivers downloaded and I am running setup from there.

You probably need it mobility modded first. Try downloading it from this thread.

edit: faster way is to do it yourself:

Hmm they could have put a numerical keypad in the huge frame of this computer. Eh, I already got used to working without one, I only miss the "gray *" select all button in Total Commander . :)

    Uh-oh. There is a numeric keypad! :)

And you know why I thought there wasn't? Because even with the numeric keypad, there is still a significant amount of bezel left on both sides of the keyboard! :)

    Talk about "desktop replacement"!

    Sorry about that :)

I guess until the stability issues are resolved the benchmarking will have to wait.

How long does it take ASUS to respond? Do they not do tech support over the phone or on the weekends

Yes, Asus CS (for notebook only) is available 24/7. Their number is posted on the Asus info booth sticky and on the OP of this thread.

Yeah based on this I can't wait

"The Mobility Radeon HD 4870 includes the Avivo HD called video technology including an onboard soundchip for 7.1 sound output over HDMI or DisplayPort and the 2nd generation UVD (Unified Video Decoder). This UVD 2 supports full bitstream decoding of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 streams. In addition to this, it also supports dual video stream decoding and Picture-in Picture mode which makes the UVD full BD-Live compliant. Simplified, the Avivo HD technology handles all video tasks and enables the GPU to decode HD videos."

    1. Did anyone with a W90 in hand confirm if the 4870s are DDR3 or DDR5?

    2. If they are DDR3 like the 4850, then would the only difference be a higher starting clock speed**?

    3. Would the 4850 and 4870 end up being the same OC'd? Or is there more headroom starting off higher or do they both have the same clock ceiling**?

** Single card comparison not Xfire.

That whole initial windows setup thing is real flakey at the best of time, Vista's was worse. Add to that whatever Asus stuff is trying to do its own thing at the same time and you have a right mess at the first start up.

I usually take an image of a new laptop before even booting it, blow it away and start afresh. That way I have a narrower list of things that could be going wrong if I have problems along the way, since I know what exactly I've installed.

I'm sure these are just teething problems, but while we're at it, bring on Windows 7...

Thanks for the updates Striker. I'm sold already, only thing I'd like to know about is fan noise at gaming temps.

They are gddr3 i downloaded gpuz to check. I've been having significant problems with my w90 it's starting to get very frustrating. The screen display will either completely blur then blacken out, or create vertical white lines across the screen blocking everything. I've done system restores to various points but to no avail. I might try a complete reinstallation of a clean vista 64 not from the recovery cd and see if that helps.

I mean, I hate to sound like I'm raining down on the parade, but the amount of problems I've been having with mine aren't letting me do anything right now except try to research and find ways to fix things.

Sorry if this has been addressed in another post (thought I'd been keeping up to date!) but in that picture of the Device Manager, pg21 of this thread, it's got - Radeon HD 4870 X2 twice. The X2 is a double GPU card, so having two is having 4 GPU's on two cards.

Before launch people said this was really a misprint, and it was two 4870's, but that's not what Windows Device Mangler seems to be saying... what gives?

I wonder if u'd slap XP on it what would happen ?
I wonder how difficult would it b to find drivers for XP for that thing and then try to see if u'd get any lockups ?

It's certainly beginning to sound like a possible rush job. I would still recommend a clean install of your own OS if you have one. I know it shouldn't be required but...

I was following the launch of the C90 last year with great interest when that first came out, and the things people had to do to get it working smoothly was just nuts. They had a hardcore group of followers tho, and it was in a large part thanks to this site that they got it sorted in the end.

Yes, I was one of the first to own the C90S, but luckily, I went with GenTech and my unit was shipped with everything working and no bsods :) I remember numerous people having issues with incompatible ram, bad GPUs, and power supply issues.

It's times like these where you'd wish you'd gotten the unit from a reseller :p

Meh, if I were to attempt to exchange my w90, would I contact newegg or asus? I can't seem to get rid of the lockups paired with screen glitches (lines or just complete screen blackout).

    This is from their website.

"You, the Customer are solely responsible for paying the return shipping cost for defective or otherwise returned merchandise. If an RMA is necessary, contact Newegg.ca Customer Service at 1-800-390-1119 in order to purchase a return shipping label and obtain an RMA invoice. This is the only accepted method for Newegg.ca to process your RMA due to possible duties, fees and unforeseeable circumstances if using another courier method. Customer Service will provide that label digitally so you may print it at home. If you pay to send the item back to Newegg.ca, we will replace the item and ship the replacement to you at no charge."

Nope, I can't get anything to work except the driver the laptop came with. I'm currently typing from my netbook, the w90 is just way too unstable, everytime I go to refresh a page or click a link, I sort of wince because I never know when it'll just bsod on me... I was too hasty with picking this laptop up and probably should have waited for reviews, i even cancelled my gt725 order for this.

Hey Bibsybob, I know how you must be feeling. It's like waiting for Santa to bring you the one present you always wanted, and instead he kicks you in the nuts. Plus, the anticipation adds to the frustration and anxiety.

All I can say is hang in there. Asus is a GREAT company, you must know that because you bought one of their laptops, it's just easy to forget that some times. I have bought over 30 Asus laptops for customers and use one my self (M70V1). They have all had hassle free, enjoyable experiences with them.

I am in no way trying to downplay your frustrations as I'm sure I would be frustrated as well, but keep in mind that the laptop has only been on the market for about three days, I'm sure they will get it fixed up sooner rather than later.

Wow, if it is that unstable, makes you think if Asus kinda rushed it with this one. Sounds to me that the drivers were either poorly designed or forced.

Yea I mean I trust Asus as a great company, I'm typing on an EEEPC HE version that I had pre-ordered in fact, this thing runs great! Just thinking that in terms of this asus w90, they might have pushed it out too quick, given that nothing with even a 4850 radeon is out yet in the US (MSI GT725 should be this week). And from when I was running gpu-z and other system monitors on my w90, it appears the 4870 in there is simply a 4850 oced to 550mhz core clock, that's it.

Thing is, the weight of this thing is needless to say pretty friggin heavy. I had hoped to put this into a laptop carrying case I had that had ample room for 17 inchers including a P-7805u I returned a while back. This thing is bigger than the whole bag lol. I'm not sure you are allowed to return laptops to newegg, only exchange em, so I might be stuck with this behemoth. Does newegg even let you just return it for a restocking fee? All I really intended to do was play wow and future blizzard games at max possible settings, I'm thinking a 17 incher like the gt725 I originally ordered might actually be right for me...

Of course, i would be complaining alot less if this thing worked for me, and I'm sincerely hoping that mine is particularly buggy compared to others, but I'm not sure... Striker hasn't done any intensive testing yet it seems on his w90, nor installed or tried benchmarking anything.

I would be interested to see how it goes from Vista to 7. I will be trying that out when I get mine and posting my results if no one else has. I'll bet it will kick .

The problem I for see going from Vista to XP would be that the Video and Audio Drivers are so new, I don't think they would make a XP version of them.

Yes, but what if after you took out the battery and put it back in to allow it to properly reboot and locked up yet again while trying to load in for the first time? Or even again after that? I felt compelled to have too do a recovery, I couldn't get past loading the desktop and startup programs.

I hope this issue is soon cleared up, I feel bad for you guys!
And shame on ASUS for not doing any extensive testing with this, 2 laptops having the same problems is not a good thing.
