So I cleared all private data...found out the page wouldn't load after that...shut down peerguardian and firefox...and it worked. So it must've been loading the old stuff when peerguardian blocked the site...some reason it didn't block IE. Dunno just a quirk i guess.

I know one person did. They had some video driver issues but that's about it.

I think I will try soon as well. Should run like a rocket!!

I think it would too. I believe there are a few Asus utilities that are still not compatible, but they're not crucial for running the OS.

win7 still has about a year or so to go before it's made into retail..that should be plenty of time to get it right.

most of the vista drivers work in the beta version of win7.
they even have the 3870 x2 listed in there as a whql driver. so someone was thinking ahead.

would love to get this thing off the ground, but yeah...i don't own one. you guys are either going to have to wait it out or start experimenting.... not sure how fast asus will get on this thing. and the only reason they updated the bios was because they hea4rd what was going on over here, then their machine failed at cebit in front of a bunch of potential customers.(speculation of course)

not saying it isn't a good laptop, but E bought the ocz whitebook under the same pretense and you see he sold it... nah, im going to wait till the clevos come out and are thoroughly tested before jumping out in to another laptop. this one i have seems to be still holding it's own. now it's only been one person who has put in a qx9300 and tried to put it to the limit.(still waiting on some other benchmarks from him or anyone else running a qx9300)

Has there been any updates on C2D Q9200 @ 2.33 ? is it cancelled or something?

The gap between Q9100 and Qx9300 is just too big imo...

    Edit:

Forget it, just noticed Q9200 is a desktop chip

    Edit 1:

    http://killernotebooks.com/nagamaki/nagamaki_order_page.html

Is it a desktop chip or mobile chip? I seem to be able to find Q9200 on configuation of whitebook...

Get the second one. Momentus drives ending with ASG have a freefall sensor, this is suppose to prevents the chance of harddrive failure/data corruption. Normally they come at premium, but if the price are the same, they are definately worth it.

    Hope this helps.

The cost (retail) of the q9100 and qx9300 is very small, little reason not to get the qx9300 if you are buying retail.

I thought john and I already were gods :)

I'm working on a little something right now, I may have a W90 that I can get ahold of and toy with for a little while. I had enough troubleshooting and OC experience with the 3870s - Im extremely confident that I can tap the potential of this rig. ATI is a different beast, I'm not sure anyone with the W90s so far has a ton of experience with those GPUs. Not trying to sound conceited or doubtful of anyone elses abilities, but I know for a fact that I could break 20k with the rig. Also, I don't see there being a big issue with modding the drivers - however if you just add the ID String and proper .inf code, that won't work. It's a more in depth process. I think that's why everyone is having issues on the 2 Card installation with modded drivers. Anyhow.. Hopefully my deal works through and I get a temp W90 to help further everyone else along in their ventures. Heck, if I like it enough(prolly would for a couple months) then I may just buy the test unit. Gotta wait and see!

Sorry if I am off topic but today I think I am pulling the trigger and buying although I have a couple more questions. Is this beast to big/hot to put in your lap and/or would you recommend a cooler? Thanks for the help!

In terms of heat, the w90 runs very cool considering the hardware it's packing. Every major heat source has its own fan which is critical. I did buy the nzxt cryo lx cooler for it though, as I feel it can only help performance when overclocking and extend the life of the components. I'd say a cooler is optional though, as the rubber feet lift up the computer off the surface to let the fans get their air.

And in terms of using it on your lap, the answer is simple: don't. Your tolerances may be different to mine, but it's FAR too heavy for me to be comfortable. Also, it's so much wider than your lap....so basically, it's not a reasonable way to use the computer. Too bulky, too heavy, best to leave it on a desk with an external mouse.

Hope that helps. You'll definitely be happy with the quality of the chassis and the other aspects of the computer on the outside (speakers, screen, ports).

Thanks for the info firebird34, so I would guess you are not going to break this out on a flight then. I want to get a machine to replace my desktop, but I do travel and would need to use it on the road at times. I wouldn't mind carrying it around but I dont want to stand out like some freak sitting in the airport with this monstrosity on my lap.

It's interesting how the BIOS posted on ASUS website is version 0502 and is labeled Original Release, but mine is older.

I am going to update it now and see what happens.

I tried before using the built in EasyFlash but it said "Boot block the file is not valid"

    Will update soon.

OK, so I have downloaded the one posted by users here and the one on Asus website and when I run the BIOS update or the EasyFlash from Windows, non of them recognize the file as a BIOS file.

    Hmm.

Just wanted to provide an update to you guys about my w90 rma. I just received it back on Friday, haven't had much time to test it since I'm doing a lot of studying for exams.

Anyway, I'm not even sure if what I got back was my old w90 I originally sent in or a new one, no one contacted me or anything to tell my what exactly their technicians did. When I called them for an update a week ago they promised me that a technician would call me and inform me the details of what exactly they did for the w90 I sent in and how they planned to fix it/replace it. I got no such call, no information, no nothing, just the w90 sent back to me without a word...

The w90 I received back (new, fixed? lol) was formatted as if it were new, with the typical vista 64 username creation and initial loadup. Things went smoothly, did not have the typical lockups or freezes that I would normally expect to appear at this point. I checked the ATI gpu drivers and they were the same as before. I restarted the system to check the BIOS and it was a new version dated 2/25/09 that people who received newer w90 shipments reported. I'm not sure what else is changed, it seems maybe just the BIOS?

Anyway, things seem to be running smoothly, no problems yet whatsoever, although I haven't had much time to play around with this since Friday. Let me know if you guys want me to check anything else.

I had the opportunity to travel with the w90 last week and I have to say it's not really a problem to carry it around on your back. I'm used to heavy bags filled with books, so I wasn't phased by the weight. However....actually using the w90 outside the bag while on the road could be a problem. Besides, the battery is more of a UPS than a true battery.

So transportation is no problem, but working or gaming on it away from a desk would be interesting to say the least. My little 13.3" macbook is going to have to keep me productive in those traveling situations while the w90 sits in the bag until I get to wherever I'm going.

    Get an EEE :p

Its the perfect balance ultra small and portable for any/all situations until you get to ground zero then break out the behemoth w90 for the desktop on the go.

Yeah the W90 is indeed a more of a desktop unit.
It is quite heavy to carry around if you're not used to having a big laptop strapped to your back. The Bag Asus provides is quite well built though and should last a good long while.

I used the W90 on my lap over at my brothers place yesterday (maybe 30-45 mins of usage) and while it's certainly doable, the unit is quite heavy and a touch difficult to balance do to it's size. I'm not a small guy by any means, so it wasn't too much of a problem, but for someone smaller I could see it being difficult.

Well I'm off to pickup the 2nd hard drive, and maybe a mouse as well.

    Cheers.

Well I just got off the phone with ASUS and their technician can't figure out why I cant update my BIOS. I mentioned that I am a little nervous about everything as most of the 1st batch of W90's didn't work, I have a Batch 2 and only batch 3 seem to be problem free.

I also mentioned that my BIOS is dated before the "1st version" on the website and most problems seem to be BIOS related.

In light of all of this, we decided too RMA the unit. Luckily, I live only 20 minuets from Asus Canada and if I drop it off my self, they might have it back same day (sweet!!).

So now it's off to backup all my data (again) and do a fresh F9 install for them to play with.

That's true, I've been looking into a netbook as a companion to the w90. It's been tempting, but I'm going to hold off for a bit. A lot of great new netbook technology will be coming by the end of the year. Monolithic dual core atoms with hyperthreading (pineview), Ion graphics platform, cheaper ssd's, wimax (yay for philadelphia embracing wireless!). I'll certainly pounce when all that is available in a netbook. It would be the ultimate highly mobile computer (and hopefully at a reasonable price)!

Indeed, the bag is nice and more than I expected. However, the bag is extremely conspicuous, making it essentially useless in a city. I'm going to have to find a more understated backpack big enough for the w90. Anybody have any suggestions, 'cause I've been having trouble with that?

BTW, go for a Deathadder, best mouse ever! :D

example only: this is for a d901c
    ph1652 9194_20.A00 /BBL /mode=3 /x /c

nice! do you think the test unit will come with a qx9300??? wont be breaking 20k with no dual core. :) at least not yet any way...

it may not flash under windows, but it will flash in dos mode. and usually it's safer to do so. the flashing code usually looks something like that.
    or yours looks like this:
this is for a phoenix bios
    ph1652 W90VP-ASUS-0502.rom /BBL /mode=3 /x /c

    ami would be slightly different.

I did try flashing it in BIOS but I did not try DOS.
Don't know where my USB floppy is ATM and also don't mind the excuse to RMA it for a new unit seem as how it will only take a day or two.

did you check out strikers link? that's a very good one to have.
and you dont need a floppy, just use a bootable flashdrive. you would only need the floppy on a bad flash.(some of the time)

madmech, you up for some benching today?
does it crash if you bench one card?
