I don't know what voids an ASUS warranty but has anyone with lock-ups tried removing one of the GPUs and testing how things run like that?

And do the 4870 cards still use a Master and Slave bios?

Newegg pretty much offered me an RMA about 4 seconds after contacting them- not sure why they wouldn't help you...

Edit: I've had little to no GPU issues and few if any lockups. Wondering what's different...

For some reason I want to say no because I remember an article stating this was changed... though that could be completely wrong.
I doubt that removing a card would stop the lock ups, though.

I just got off the phone with ASUS tech support about my vidoe issues.
Here was the fix I was given. I am going to try it and then post if it resolved the issue.
    -boot in safe mode
-remove ASUS Turbo Gear Enhanced VGA Driver
    -reboot
-reinstall the application from the driver CD.

Seems over simple but I have my fingers crossed, be back in a few

Interesting that it may have something to do with that! Hopefully it works for you and all the others! I know the Asus Enhanced drivers play with the power plans- (Like when you Overclock the CPU, you get a "ASUS Overclock mode"). Fingers crossed for you!

Well, no go, 20 seconds into my game after doing what ASUS tech support said and I got the same video crap out resulting in a hard shut down with the power button. i am currently on hold with ASUS again.

I will keep you all posted.

For me its weird. I played WoW for about 2 hours without even the slightest problem. No glitch or anything. I ran hulu and watched a few episodes and saw a line that ran in the black part when its full screened. The only time i get a bsod is when im using the notebook off the power supply and then plug it in. Then almost immediately, it locks up

How goes your dealings with ASUS, any thoughts to when a "cure" can be expected. I still have not had the time to really dig into my W90 and I can say lucky for ASUS they are spared dealing with me for now.

Hopefully -=$tR|k3r=- will have answers before that time comes or you need to tap out for a while.

Here's my report on win7. Seems like a hopeless pursuit. It's slow, buggy, and I've had many crashes. Whatever driver is built into 7 is not seeing these cards right. Nevertheless, I'm dloading some problematic games off steam to see if there are any changes.

I may have to call Asus again but be a little less kind. I'm not hearing about any progress from them, and that annoys me as a customer. No one I've talked to seems to have any idea what is going on, maybe I'll try to get this J.J.

so...has anyone tried not installing the turbo gear or asus ai or the probe software(if it has that) and just installed the vga driver only. then started testing it with benchmarks or games...so far i can't tell if this has been done yet.

I followed your suggestions and got rid of Turbo Gear for the cpu overclocking, Turbo Gear Extreme VGA Driver, AI Touch, and NB Probe. Simply nothing changed. I did get a few more seconds into the Mass Effect opening video before crashing....but that's not really a huge improvement.

-=$tR|k3r=- , I saw your post too late and didn't speak with JJ.

I can however say that both techs I spoke with were profesional and curtious.

The last tech suggested that I remove the TurboGear's VGA driver and tried running the unit to see if the issue is still present. So johnkss, that is what I am going to do next. I will of course post the outcome.

I was also thinking about switching the windows power option to high peformance from standard in case t is a power issue.

I was also given a ticket number and as-=$tR|k3r=- stated, they have to forward it along to R&D. He, for the obvious reasons, could not give me any time frame although it still didn't deter me from asking.

I am of course as anxious as everyone else but I still would like to say that I still feel as if this is a well built unit. The customer service appears to be on the money. It is my first ASUS purchase and I still do not regret it. I am going to stick it out unless this issue cannot be resolved at all, at which point I won't have a choice. I am a little disappointed but not at all dissatisfied.

    be back shortly

One thing that concerns me about these drivers is future updates. It seems that regular ati driver updates cannot be used on these notebooks. This is a serious problem. Use FEAR 2 as an example. You need 9.2 to use crossfire. So i'm not sure, will no future games support crossfire without a driver from Asus? Asus may not bring out new drivers regularly, it would be nice to be able to rely on standard ati drivers. Perhaps I'm wrong about not being able to use ati drivers, but that's what it seems, anybody know more about this?

Well, I played AOC with the TurboGear's VGA driver uninstalled and on high performance battery setting for about an hourand 10 mins. All was well until I bumped up the Shader Model version up from 2.0 to 2x. Then about 30 seconds and crashed. At least I think I can play on the lower res but as most probably predicted, the issue remains.

Great news on the Wed driver release, I am hoping thats the ticket.

you didn't read it well my friend... :D

it talks about the main reason why ati is killing nvidia when using AA. :D

the id strings that identify your card as being a 4870x2 or 4870 card.
im downloading the ccc 9.2 right now.
    looks something like this...
    "ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series " = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_944C
    "ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9443
    "ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2" = ati2mtag_R7X, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9441

great find dondadah. that's what i was really looking for. i knew there was some sort of step that was missing and that articles explains some of it.

    quote from article

Let's start from the top. The above-mentioned API was supposed
to fix one of the most obvious issues with DirectX 10, that of slow anti-aliasing. Assassin's Creed for the PC is one the few games that supports the 10.1 API. Some gamers remarked that the new implementation of anti-aliasing made the game run faster on top ATI videocards, like the ATI Radeon HD 3000 implementations. Considering the fact that Assassin's Creed is one of those titles that bears an Nvidia logo, called " The Way It's Meant To Be Played", that is telling gamers that the game is best played with a graphics card from Nvidia, it's clear that there were people who found themselves a bit annoyed with the increased ATI performance.

Then Ubisoft released a patch that was designed to eliminate the support for the 10.1 API from the game. They said that "the patch will remove support for DX10.1, since we need to rework its implementation. The performance gains seen by players who are currently playing Assassin's Creed with a DX10.1 graphics card are in large part due to the fact that our implementation removes a render pass during post-effect which is costly".

    hope that helps some.

    Jlbrightbill

    thanks for the sceener!

Ok, considering only 3dmark runs, I've been busy benchmarking and have some results to share.

The CPU was overclocked to 3.28 GHz, max settings from Turbo Gear.
I overclocked both 4870s in catalyst to their max settings, 600mhz on the core and 900mhz on the memory

    3dmark 06: 15381
    3dmark Vantage: P9167

I was even more impressed by the temps. I should note the w90 was running atop a nzxt cryo lx on full blast, so not sure how much that affected the temps. But the CPU temp maxed out at 43 C, middle 4870 reached 64 C and the 4870 on the corner reached 60 C. Those temps, to me, are completely mind boggling, so low.

This system really has so much potential. Hopefully this new driver really will do the trick and we can put those 15381 marks to use in games.

Edit: BTW, the system idles at 34 C on the cpu, 42/49 on the gpus, with the overclock and with the external cooler off

Because this is my desktop. :)

Here is my attempt at a modified ATI driver. This is the full Catalyst 9.2 package for Vista x64. It also works under Windows 7, at least on my desktop. If the modification process is anything like it used to be when I shoehorned NVidia drivers onto my old laptop (Back before LaptopVideo2Go), it involves adding your Device ID to the device check built into the driver. I added it based on mrzzz's post.

    Update: new link - http://www.mediafire.com/file/nzykzdqdozt/9-2_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_75977.zip

Worst case scenario it just won't install. If if will not install, please tell me at what point the installation fails so I can troubleshoot.

I'm 1GB GDDR5 so I can't generalize much of my performance to the mobility world, I can make general predictions though. And if anybody wants to know what the GDDR5 Mobility 4870 will perform like, I can downclock for that. :)

I fully modded the .inf's for the x64 Catalyst 9.2's to work on most Radeon Mobility GPUs. I need a Vista/7 x64 user to test the ones I posted already first though. If those install, great, I'll post the new revision, if not, I'll post the new revision anyway to see if it works. Systematic testing is best since I'm trying to limit variables.

Well it seems unlucky consumers are being taken advantage of. So far, I am wholly unimpressed by the post purchase support. I'm relying more on this forum than Asus tech support now considering no one I've talked to seems to have a clue about this problem, what's being done, or where to transfer me to someone who does. I guess they are a large company and certain people working there are not as informed as they should be.

But as I said before, I'm reasonable and patient enough to give them to the end of the week, meaning friday. I'm no expert in drivers, but that should be more than enough time to test and get it out. If they cannot deliver, they will lose a customer. It would've just been easier to make sure these units were stable before releasing them to the public...can't understand how no one caught this. But oh well, nothing to do but wait patiently like a good submissive consumer while Asus figures out how to do their job...

Jlbrightbill, thank you, I saw, mine is just boxed up awaiting a buyer. As soon as that happens it's off to whomever is purchasing it!
If this was not the case, believe me, that would've been installed already!

Until someone buys it I am. I still think that the system is awesome, I just need to fix my situation financially. And I may even come back to a new W90 at a later, more stable date.
