I believe Bibsybob went down this path rather than use the recovery partition. Think he's had more problems than most now.

People who don't have problems, do not have complaints. They are not nearly as vocal as the ones that do. They do not seek out forums such as this. That is human nature. -
-
and make sure it aint the same 10 people from ati that we talked to that said it wasn't they're job to make mobile drivers but in fact it was asus job to take care of it.
not sure how far your going to get, but umm.... more power to you!

well win7 has a built in mobility ati driver. making able to run games and everything.
-
also i would like to know if 9.2 works i have it avaliable in my sig
win 7 has a driver that should reconize your cards
you beat me don -

The two separate 4870s are visible towards the middle-left (with black-sprayed copper heatsink on each) -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
you can go into games but i recommend you at least install CCC before anything. just avoid the drivers for now. they work great. -
That picture is very interesting because I'm still losing sleep over the fan grill placement issue. The middle 4870 card exhausts much hotter air than the one on the side. If you look at the bottom of the unit with the cover on, the grill sits atop the small passive heatsink to the right of the fan in question instead of over the fan itself like the other two fans inside. Perhaps I'm missing something, but it just makes no sense to me.
-
Praise be to Asus to allow you to check it yourself easily. One panel to access all, that is awesome. -
For those complaining about new products shouldn't have flaws, you should really check out the M15X complaint threads when it first came out. Or over the next few months. I'm not saying that one should expect flaws either, but compared to the issues the M15X owners had, you guys are actually looking quite fortunate. At least no one has complained of build, quality, overheating or cracking issues just yet. Give it a chance, the w90s have barely been out.
It would seem that Asus didn't do a great job with testing these laptops, but one should give them a chance.
Don't forget you're calling Asus North America when you call in regarding issues. The laptops are made either in Asus Taiwan or Asus China, and since the Asus North America folks haven't even gotten their hands on a model yet, I would consider their word somewhat suspect. -
Good point, there is prolly a greater braintrust in this forum than in Texas. -
As long as someone is working on it, I don't care who.
And one more thing. In order to drown out the phenomenal clicking from the hard drive, I put some headphones on to listen to music. Unfortunately, there is an equally terrible squeal coming through the headphone jack. It isn't the headphones, as I've never experienced this problem before. Could other owners test their headphone jacks to determine if the problem is also universal or just with mine? Thanks. -
when you guys installed these drivers...did you go to intels site to download the newest chipset drivers? or even install the chipset drivers that came with your system? this is a major part of a fresh install.
-
-
yeah, it can be caused by the chipset drivers as well... because the correct hd controller may not be installed...(speculation of course)
-
As for the rest of everyone, glad to hear again the drive is 7200rpm...I will most likely keep mine and shove an ssd in there for the os. Waiting not so patiently for my unit to come. I agree there are two cards and not one. ASUS has only a slight clue whats going on. Hopefully the drivers and such can be resolved in a timely manner between ASUS and ATI...hope these two companies can combine knowledge and solve these issues.
Lots of hope, thats all we got at this moment. -
Is there a person up to date that has a working, non crashing w90 ? I'm already lost on who got what and who's got what problem.
It would b nice if maybe we could get update on first page on who has received their w90 and what is the status.
Like:
striker: still crashing, trying to fix
billybob: returned for rma
..........
..........
..........
It would help the newcomers with sorting through 100 pages now -
All we have seen is that they are still waiting for a test setup to arrive before they can fix this issue ....
I would have tought that right on day 1 of the problem ... asus taiwan or asus china would have gone ahead to fix this issue on the spot ... 24x7 ???
???

Received my W90vp-x1 last Wednesday, and haven't had a single problem with it. I have it mostly running 24/7, sleeping it when I travel.
I have been very busy with work, but have tried to do a little bit each day to get it configured so I can sell my previous laptop (Asus G2s-Extreme, make an offer ).
Ran Windows Updates a few times and installed basic software: Firefox, Safari, iTunes, Office 2007, K-lite Mega Codec, DMC4, FutureMark benchmarks, Spybot/Spyware Blaster, Norton NIS 2009, configured and personalized it, used TurboGears to overclocked it to +17% (3.289Ghz).
It's run on battery, run on AC, used 802.11g/n wireless, Bluetooth (included Asus mouse), 1Gbit ethernet, ATT USB HSDPA, hooked up a 2nd monitor using HDMI, and added another disk drive (320GB WD).
It hasn't crashed once. I have booted many times, after installs, and it always boots quickly. I haven't had a single head scratching problem running benchmarks or applications.
I am still running on the stock install, I downloaded the Asus updates for the W90vp before I received the laptop, but haven't had a chance to follow up and install the updates. I did download/install the Intel Matrix update posted by Asus for the W90vp for x64.
Gotta say the laptop is very impressive in quality, looks, and performance. I couldn't be happier. Sorry to hear others are having issues, but the same is true with just about every high-end limit pushing design that gets released. For me, this has been the least painful Release 1.0 product I have used in a while.
I also had very good success with the Asus G2s-Extreme. The only annoyment has been keeping the Blu-Ray software/firmware up to date. If I were keeping the G2s-Extreme I would likely replace the drive with the LG Blu-ray GBW-T10n. I am ordering one for the W90vp-x1
BTW, if anyone has a reproducible problem with their W90vp-x1, and I can test it on my W90vp-x1, please let me know. I am still pretty busy through Wednesday this week, but would be happy to help when I have a break.
Thanks to all for their informational links and comments.

Hey at least someone isnt having any problems. what games do you have? and when did you place you order? from where?
-
W90 X1 = fail, have $4k saved up for a gaming lappy , seems like I have to wait for the new clevos
-
Whoa a real workin one I would get him to copy his driver unno but it seems to be workin. Can some one install win7 n see how that driver works?
-
so has anybody found out if its gddr5 on the newly produced units or what?
also, im 99% sure its video driver related for everybody. uninstall the ATI drivers as well as turbo gear software. sure its ugly, but you have zero crash's or freeze's. at least thats what worked for me.
if you intend to install xp, you need to wait as there is no driver support for M98 (and that is what the cards are) for xp
also , can you buy chasis parts direct from asus ? -
they said it was an error in the add.
-
aww so sweet no freezes no lockups and came on here only wen v were looking for sum one who dint have problem with w90vp n there popped sum one with 0 posts strange....mean no offence to anyone and apologize if sum one felt so but its strange.....

Ordered from Newegg Friday night 2/20/09, shipped 2/23, arrived 2/24. Bottom of 1 side of the outer box was crushed, but the internal packing was so good (peanuts and fat rolled up bubble wrap) it didn't even scratch the Asus packaging.

Actually, I have been watching the thread since -=$tR|k3r=- started it (thanks -=$tR|k3r=- !), and I was also worried when the first results weren't so promising. I almost canceled my order, but was too busy
So, you can imagine I am quite relieved that my W90vp-x1 is so well behaved.
It's easier to take the time to post results when we have stuff to complain about, or problems to solve, and not so much when things are running well.
Finally forced myself to take the time to post. I wasn't seeing anyone else post that they were having good results so I figured I needed to let you all know there is at least one of us with a stable W90vp-x1. Where are the rest of you guys??
Now, to sleep, gonna be busy tomorrow
Good Night, Scott -
Gaming Benchmarks from notebookcheck.com by way of pctuning.cz
see where you guys fit in at...
The Czech website pctuning.cz have already published an extensive review of the Asus W90 with a Intel C2D T9600 and 6 GB RAM. The following gaming benchmarks stem from their review.

Just a question, scott, what version of vista did you use? I mean a 64bit or the 32 bit version?
Sorry, I didn't see the post of the Matrix 64 bit... -
nice little spanish write up of the w90

omg, if i want to become a betatester for asus. i´ll send them my cv, and not my money.
unfortunately i just requested an ro-nr. for my aw m17 and was willing to jump on the asus bandwagon. -
D*** this notebook looks gorgeous. I'm glad I don't have the money right now But this summer when I'm in market for a new gaming/3D work notebook...
-
And congratulations Scott for being able to enjoy the w90.
My status could be described as this:
Occasional lockups on bootup, requiring the battery to be removed.
Vista environment works fine, no problems out of games.
Games consistently crash with screen flickering and bsod's, yet strangely 3dmark and Bioshock run fine.
I agree with wiggin, asus should be emailing their customers who have filed problems with daily updates. I feel like I'm being ignored by them, not a good feeling. -

Speaking of not having problems;
I am glad that the few errors I've had aren't bad. There was a few lockups- once- that I can remember. Nothing after since. I am glad that ASUS has acknowledged an error on their part with GDDR5, and I think that ASUS is working on the problem, but I imagine it isn't easy getting ATi to comply with them, either.
As for benchmarks, those scores are pretty good. This thing will game, and it's a beast. Too bad someone will get mine, and I won't be able to enjoy it once 9.2+ hit, etc.
Enjoy them guys, those of us who have problems, like Striker and I think, it's that random DOS thing. I still believe it is more on the power settings than it is on the ATi drivers, but I can't offer any solid evidence, and for that I'm sorry. -
bit-tech has a nice review up.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/laptops/2009/03/02/first-look-asus-w90-dual-hd4870-notebook/1
they do mention problems though with graphics drivers and turbo gear.
Interesting read. Finally we can say for sure there are two separate pcbs. -

don't forget to install the chipset 1st before anything.

Newegg is giving me problems and asus tech support cannot be found

but gotta love high res pictures. great find!
got any more of these with out the paste on the gpu??? -

Somebody could contact Bit-tech and see about getting their x64 Mobility Catalyst drivers, apparently ATI delivered them a custom version designed for that notebook. The chances of it are slim, but hey, let them know how horribly your notebook is running and crashing and see if they'll release it.
-
What problems are you having with NewEgg?
Asus Tech Support can not be found? I found them. They are ignoring you? Not answering the phone? Told you they would respect you in the morning but never called back? You can't find their website? What do you mean? -
Just copied the picture link from here http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/laptops/2009/03/02/first-look-asus-w90-dual-hd4870-notebook/1 , so there is no need to go through the pages.
