It's under character, but not size limit.

That's around 9262 and Toshiba X305 size, not that surprising actually.

...Sigh... I told Striker before, but I guess time for the rest of everyone else to hear it- I've got to sell mine thanks to taxes...

I'm probably going to be doing an eBay listing or maybe even one in the NBR Marketplace. Most likely for only 2000. I'm pretty disappointed- especially after I was just hitting 19-22 FPS Average on 1920x1080 Enthusiast AA-4X DX10 Crysis Warhead.
I got the benchmark to run but it still wont save the end file. That means with a new driver if we were to see a 5-7FPS gain that game would be playable like that. That's amazing.

Try talking to a customer service agent at newegg, it might cost you less to return it to newegg.

They refused a request for RMA? That's odd.

Hmm... 2000 eh... I'm supposed to be getting rid of my laptops... not buying new ones.

Edit: Actually, bcool- what do you mean by "Play Crysis"... 'cause this thing would probably destroy Cysis on Gamer mode... If you just want to play it, it definitely can, max it out is a different story.

And yeah, they said that you can't return Laptops. Very frustrating. Like I said, I'm trying to think of other things to part with before this, but... not goin' so well, since this is more of a toy and all :)

I'm waiting for some real benchmarks with this thing. Single GPU and Crossfire.

Are the cards really that buggy? I wonder if this explains why Alienware is holding off on them.

The errors don't appear to be the cards at all, but more Windows. Specifically, Striker and I believe that it deals with the Power management. This could be wrong but that's what it looks like so far.

Yikes! My recent experience with ATI hasn't been very good; when the Radeon HD 2600 card came out in the Apple iMacs my machine was one of many which would just lock up at random during intense graphics like games and it took Apple/ATI over 90 days to a) identify and then b) remedy the problem (heat) with a firmware update which basically just downclocked the video card! I think that situation is still crawling through the class-action courts, but needless to say my subsequent machines have all had nVidia inside. I hope hope hope that isn't a similar situation here! Fingers crossed, I'd really like to buy one of these puppies...

I do feel a little more confident with ASUS who are serious about gaming (unlike Apple) but your inability to get the latest ATI drivers to run has me worried. Doesn't anybody thoroughly test their products before release any more?

Good work bud! Glad to see someone who wants to get things fixed just as much as I would.

Drivers are always going to be an issue with any video card...nvidia or ati, doesn't matter...heck my tri sli setup was buggy and along with vistax64 it was and sometimes still is a nightmare. Almost wish this thing had vista 32 instead.

I think the fact the Asus support people haven't even got one themselves yet answers that question.

Frankly it's borderline criminal sending stuff out if drivers or hardware are not stable. If it wasn't that most people who buy them are happy to experiment by reinstalling a new OS or doing a recovery they'd be screwed. They're relying on the 'enthusiast' who's more interested in the fact they own one than the fact the product as a whole has been rushed and is not stable.

Having said all that, being in the 'enthusiast' camp myself I'd still buy one tomorrow if I could! That's how they get away with it.

I haven't had an ATI card since the HD 2600; do they update the drivers as frequently as nVidia and are there mod shops like LaptopVideo2go wringing them out? Just askin'....

There's a mobility modder to make the newest available.

The only reason that we don't have the newest this very moment is that these cards are brand new. We need device ID's, I believe it is to mod the drivers for these cards correctly.

    @bcool
from what I know, it is quite impossible to play crisis at highes setting even with the highest graphic card (CMIIW). I don't know with the new Nvidia G295 series that set into SLI or overclocked card, probably such card can play at max setting
So, for sure this laptop can't play at max setting too (underclocked ATI 4870)
To play at max, better buy a desktop...

oh, Crysis is quite inefficient, that's what I know, thus it requires extremely good graphic card...
Just check the benchmark around here... or look into the image of 3Dmark 2006and DMC4 benchmark, and guess whether it can play or not..

And Crysis code is not exactly "optimized", i bet they could smooth it little bit more for performnce and not lose image quality. Those two HD4870 are quite a champs. Only thing that bugs me is that there should have been 1GB per card.

512mb per card is just adequate for that resolution, I think
Higher ram is good for higher resolution, but I agree, if the ram is upgraded to 1 GB GDDR5 per card will be better (it's HD 1920*1080, so it will be better for gaming)
Wonder if one of the card can be turn off to save battery life
    Any updates from striker?

WOW, are you really that bad in English? Geez don't be so lazy. At least try to spell words fully so we can understand and not have to spend time trying to figure out what word means what.

Anyways, like other people have said, Crysis IS not able to be played on Highest settings with a playable rate, it's just not optimized well enough to do so. Crysis Warhead on the other hand I believe is. They optimized it much more. For your other games, pretty much you just need to find a half decent laptop with a good gfx card. Those games aren't toooo demanding, but this Asus sure would kick their butt =D

I am wishing only the very best for you guys from this laptop, and maybe one day down the line I'll re-buy one! Just right now, when I bought it, looked to be fine financially, it ended up... not so fine :)
That's ok though, that's life, and until I sell it, I'll continue to post what I can, contribute what I can, and promise to lurk after. :p

Sounds about right, but it doesn't make it any better. They use 3day select as standard and remember Feb only has 28 days in it (i.e. one left). Those 3 days are considered business days as well.

Then on top of it and something I totally had no idea of is that NewEgg is not the most prompt at processing your order. You can wait a day or two just in the process of getting it out the door. Although you can pay a slight upcharge to have it processed immediately (something I glossed over when I ordered mine).

In response to NewEgg's response time to processing and shipping orders. I'm in Pennsylvania and have NEVER had to wait more then 36 hours for my order to be shipped. Normally I order by 11am EST and they have it out the same day. (Note: this is excluding weekend orders since all companies don't ship on Sunday and usually neither do on Saturdays.)

Now on the subject, I should be getting my laptop today and am entirely ecstatic about getting it. I'll post more info about that stability of it when it get it.

On a side note, finally had the time and state of mind to unbox mine and fire it up.

So far in the few hours I had with it last night I had no lock-ups.

My initial impression is not unlike others who have posted before me, but I will for the sake of others give you a few comments.

Packaging was great came double boxed with peanuts weight was 34lbs and about the size of a medium Xmas tree box.

Build quality and build materials are a big thumbs up. It is big and not a light weight but I knew that going in.

Sound was very good and can get very loud considering you have 5 speakers and a sub.

If I had to be critical, I think the biggest disappointment so far for me has to be the touch media voume buttons on the left of the keyboard. At least on my machine they are not very responsive and very hard to control when they do finally respond to your touch. It seems like you can only control the volume in 4 steps (1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full) with the touch slidder. Using a function key you have much more control and steps in the volume. So for me this was somewhat an annoyance as if they are not going to perform well I would have rather had that space used for something more usefull.

All in All its a solid performer. I have only had the oppurtunity to install one game (Warhammer Online) which it handled impressively at the highest settings.

I unlocked the ATI performance function and the max OC it allows is 600/900. Although I did'nt change any of the clocks. I think this is what the 4850 is limited to iirc.

The Backpack is sure nice to have just because this thing is not gunna fit in your daddy's laptop bag. So I am happy to have a home for it right out of the box. It is very sturdy and not cheap feeling at all. However for those of you over the age of 25 it may feel a bit to "futuristic" to sport in a social setting.

Awesome to hear. So far mine is doin alright aswell(just got it yesterday). Backpack is much nicer than I expected it to be being that is was included. I have a question. I'm pretty new to vista, anyone have any good links to optimize Vista to run faster(decrap it if you will), without reducing so much of the visual aspect that makes it "vista" like?

    Ok have a question.

Regarding the ATI GPU utility. In my normal haste last night I was in the tool poking around looking at the various settings etc. There is a section which allows the user to OC the GPU clocks from stock, however this section is all "gray" until you click the lock thus unlocking the functionality.

Well long story short, I clicked it and in my haste I didn't read the pop-up prompts but I can now OC the GPU if I like, although the max settings seem to be 600/900.

I went to try and "relock" the functionality but I cannot. If you mouse over the now open lock icon it just gives the date/time that it was "unlocked". Did I do something I'm gunna regreat, i.e. have a negative impact on the ASUS warrenty?

to those of you experiencing the black lines while playing graphics intensive games or benchmarks:

I think the cause of these problems are the windows vista updates. I experienced these problems a couple of minutes ago. I just turned of the updates and rolled back via system restore. Seems to have fixed the problem. I think we definitely need a less buggy version of the video drivers.

Ok so it happened : ( Got a lock up and then a black screen about an hour ago. Just tried it now and it started right up. Do you think its worth doing a restore on it at this point or just wait till theres a fix to do anything?

these lockups....has anyone just did a basic install without installing the asus software yet?

    os
    drivers
    then one program to bench

and if so, did this setup get lockups as well?
