because you must pay tax anywhere that the company has a permanent residence. Gentech is based in California, so if you buy there you pay tax.

If you purchase from one of the retailers that is out of state you would save the tax, but you might not have a savings in the end as increased shipping costs might outweigh the tax savings

For ASUS computers there's free shipping in US. So, if I buy it for example from www.exoticpc.com I won't have to pay tax?

I believe Asus' response to this was they could not be sure how well usb 3 would be received by the public and how mainstream it would be. Thus they didn't want to have to charge more onto the price to put in a chipset that supports it when there is a chance it was all for nothing and usb 3 fails.

I would've liked to see this on it though as well.

Another thing, and I apologize if this has already been answered, but has IaTa confirmed whether there is or is not an Express 34/54 slot? I really couldn't find one on it in the pictures, and though it is not needed that bad, I would still really love to at least have this if no usb 3.0

Updated my sig as requested :)

No, I opted for the 720QM. Although I'm going to use this baby for HD video editing, don't think the costs are worth the performance upgrades so gonna stick with the default 720QM.

I also pre-ordered just 5 seconds ago. Did not read this whole thread, but did read every post of the 200+ page thread in the main forum :)

I got the 160 SSD, will be my first SSD. Can't wait! Is there anything I need to do differently with a SSD? Anything I need to know?

I also got that $35 cooling stuff on the CPU/GPU and a spare AC Adapter. Those were my only upgrades.

    :D

Obvious newbie question here: Does Asus sell their laptop directly (like Dell does, order straight from their website?) If not, what is the difference between their list of "resellers" and "redistributors"? Thanks.

do some research before you ask please.
and no, ASUS does not sell their laptop directly.
resellers are companies or individuals that purchases goods or services with the intention of reselling them rather than consuming or using them, and I've never heard of redistributors.

I tried to do the research, which is why I asked. You guys seem to be very knowledgeable. On Asus's website, looking at "where to buy" it came up with "resellers" and "distributors" (sorry, I seem to have made up the redistributor).

ASUS sells to the distributors who then sell to the resellers who then sell to the consumer.

Everyone makes single digit margins, with the distributors making the least. Therefore volume is the only way anyone makes a living :)

If they can squeeze a 5870 and i7 into a 15" form factor that looks like the G73 then I will sell my M17x.

I am pretty sure ASUS will. This is the new design concept for all the ROG notebooks if I understood the interview correct.

I have been playing around with the configuration page for days and the possibility of me getting this one is about 80% now. And it isn't 100% because I got some questions to ask you guys :D

    Here it goes.
I'm also eyeing the sager NP9850, which has a maximum of QX9300, I would probably go for Q9000 by the way, Geforce GTX 280M in SLi mode, etc. It's more expensive, of course. And I wonder if anybody could tell me if the money is worth the performance boost compared to G73JH.

As for G73 itself, should I go for 920QM Extreme or 820QM ( I don't want 720QM)? Again, is 920QM worth the money? The same question applies to 1066 vs. 1333 memory as well.

Finally, has anybody ever had the concern that HD5870's performance may be reduced when running phsyx powered games? Or is the oh-so-powerful i7 enough for physics rendering since ATI graphic cards cannot do the job?

    Thanks!!

I am thinking of buying this one too, just wonder should I go for 1333 instead of 1066. Is the difference noticable? I did read one post in this thread that said its not change much, but there is no proof about that. Any1 have experience w/ these. Thank you.

As with other systems jumping from 1066MHz to 1333MHz ram will provide a small performance increase.

As of right now we can't really say how great the performance of mobility 5870 is since it's not even out yet, even though there are some benchmarks, we gotta see the real-world benchmarks, not ones from Ati or AMD.
    And for the G73jh-a1.
for the money you should go for 820QM.
there's a slight improvement between 1066 and 1333 memory, but I wouldn't recommend getting it if you're on a budget. (you wouldn't even notice the difference)

So I guess I'll settle with 1033 memory and 820QM then. WOW, that saved me A LOT of money.

Sort of curious why you are not considering the 720QM? It is almost $600 more with slight performance gains. Now if it was only $200 more than I would probably opt for the 820QM.

I know you guys have about the same info I do but anyone know how the touchpad is going to be. I tried out the G72 and I hated the touchpad it just wasn't responsive to me and in general I hated the feel of it. So is this going to be a more "normal" touchpad or a weird one? Not a big deal but I was curious. Thanks

Ken from GenTech called me today to confirm CC info, really nice guy, looking forward to more great posts and of course this Asus, and interacting with other enthusiasts

Right, Just read this whole thread, so can finally register and post on it.

Looking forward to receiving this over here in Australia, I've pre-ordered with a local importer.

Looks like a serious beast and will be a sizable upgrade from my DELL9400 (E1705?) with 7900GS. It's just a pity that the screen is only FHD. I will miss those extra 120pixels.... Has anyone identified if it is RGBLED or just WLED? The Dells I noticed are coming out as RGB these days.

    Cheers all.

The touchpad is ok. I played with it Thursday at CES, imo it has a decent build quality. But for example if you came from a M17x like myself, it does not have the solid high end feel of the Alienware, but it is a lot sleeker in form and of course lighter. I could recommend it if you cannot wait for the big refreshes that are coming by March sometime with SLI and nVidia's GTX offerings.

I'm actually upgrading from a XPS 9400 (which was a replacement for an original Dell XPS). I didn't mind the touchpad on the Asus G60VX so if it's close then I'll be happy (then again not a huge deal).

I'll definitly be waiting until closer to March to make a decision since I at least want to see the first impressions for those who preordered this laptop and possibly see what Alienware does.

Congrats and welcome to the club! I think you made the right choice in going 820Qm over the 1333 ram. Extra cache and speed on the proc will be more noticeable. I also dealt with Justin@ Xotic and had a very good impression. Good people.

ASUS says they will begin shipping in February, but the first shipment is almost always very small, so unless you already have your order locked in the chances are getting pretty slim that you would have yours ship before March.

Well... I on pre-order with the rest of ya'll. Ordered through ExcaliberPC. I was waiting for the G72GX A1 through Provantage when I read your threads on the G73.

Averted the shipment by less than 24hours

I saw that ExcaliberPC had the 1st G72 to ship by a couple of days. That's why I went with them on the G73.

The most current shipping date I have seen is from BLT - Bottom Line Telecommunications, and shows Feb 2nd they even have posted how many they have coming in and to what States. However their site states "no returns or exchanges"

    http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop...01000100U013_BCH9484P.shtml&order_id=!ORDERID!

My big question, for right now, is the multi-monitor capabilities of the ATi HD5870.

How does it all work and how many monitors can be hooked up to the G73?

    Hey babyhemi,

It's nice to have your opinion on the G73JH..... glad you made it to CES!

Yeah, I am one of those who can't wait for the M17x refresh. I figure it will be another 3 months farther down the road, before Dell/AW does an X-Fire edition.

BTW, outstanding OC on your i7 there..... very nice indeed!

Greetings... Found this forum while doing some research on this notebook. Definitely found a lot of good info, and decided to take the plunge and pre-order. So, hopefully sometime next month, I'll have my hands on one. :)

I haven't really had a decent notebook in quite some time, although we got my wife a Qosmio X505-850 just before xmas. If not for that, I'd probably be getting two of these. ;)
