    Pre-ordered just now!
Now, as someone has very appropriately put it, the hard part begins.

Justin from Xotic just said they were informed today by Asus that shipping is pushed back to middle/late Feb.

And Donald just posted this......... and Ken Lee at Gentech feels nothing has really changed here...... could be sooner.

It gives people more time to change their mind. Plus who knows what will come out in the next month.

I would also bet if you haven't pre-ordered by now you'd be lucky to get it in March.

Just spoke with Eddie from BTOtech. They have plenty coming in and not many pre-orders. He said they won't have any trouble filling pre-orders or any orders that come in after they arrive. Reason you ask? Their price is a little higher which pushes buyers to Xotic or Gentech. If you want one for sure, order from them. Or you can wait and see what happens and let others test the machine out for you.

Mind you I pre-ordered from Xotic a couple days ago and when I spoke to Justin, he said I may not get my computer when the first shipments arrive due to the high number of pre-orders they received. So I'm now thinking of canceling my pre-order and waiting to see what happens when everyone gets theirs.

Wouldn't hurt to keep your place in line since you have extra time to cancel.

Edit: I just checked out their site. Outside of the wireless card they look cheaper to me.

A couple bucks isn't going to bother me in this situation. I'd rather have it sooner than pay less to not know when I'll get it. But you're right, it won't hurt to keep my place since they don't charge my card until they ship it.

    Two questions.
    1. Is the keyboard of G73JH back-lit?
    2. Okay, this one is ever more dumb. Will the price go up or down after G73JH is officially released and those who pre-ordered it got their machines?

    How about this then?

Will you be able turn the 3x 3.5mm jacks into 5.1 outputs, like some desktop sound cards allow?

or will I need an external spdif input to get it to 5.1 speakers?

G73Gx will have SPDIF port to support 5.1 speakers so you don't need a external sound card.

That will mean that a speaker system will need a spdif input. My Logitech x530s don't. They require the 3 x 3.5mm jacks. The Z-5500s have spdif in, but are $600+ over here.

It's a shame manufacturers don't think we might want to plug into external 5.1s, but then again, it is a laptop so not really supposed to be sitting on a desk...

M17x refresh will be here by next week at most. ;) 285 GTX SLI may be the initial offering but 5870 xfire should eventually be offered. I'll be going SLI, I don't want to deal with shoddy ATi modded drivers.

In the latest interview with Ati, they "supposedly" have re-committed to the mobile driver program.

Also, I would rather deal with shoddy drivers than shoddy hardware (nvidia mobile). My company was one of the "lucky" ones affected by the mass hardware defect 2 years ago that led us to ditch all Nvidia mobile based laptops. We had to flip over 150 laptops (38 of which were affected) because of Nvidia shipping mobile parts to OEM's with known hardware and heat tolerances that were way out of spec. We had an HP Dv9000 that went back to Hp 4 times for the same GPU malfunction over the course of a year and half. Nvidia never fixed it and ended up in a class action lawsuit that resulted in us getting all of our laptops replaced with Intel and Ati Gpu based models.

I guess the point is that no matter who you go with, you're screwed! hah

I just looked at a few european prices of this g73jh and they are all around 1800-1900 euros, compared to the 1699 dollars (wich is like 1400€?) it would cost in the usa.
If I would import one from the usa I would need to pay 21% taxes because its bought outside the EEG + 250 dollars shipping costs >.<

Those litle ventilation shafts on the bottom (see the other asus g73 thread) and the high price tend to make me look at alienware/kobalt laptops again...

If it turns out to be good anyway i'll just make a trip to the usa, always wanted to try burger king.

I think it's either going to be really good or really bad based on what we've seen. I use my gaming laptops on a notebook cooler for the most part though, so this isn't a primary concern for me.

but a notebook cooler would be ineffective if there is some type of intake in the front.

Yes, but while on the laptop cooler, the front nose is not blocked either. So it will have free airflow into the front (which I am still not convinced is where the cool air is being pulled from). The point was that the laptop usually isn't on my "lap" per say, it's usually propped up on a notebook cooler in a cool office which would make the cooling system much less likely to be a problem (For me)...

Allrighty! I had this ordered for me last week! The road to this point has been long and full of win and fail.
I am part of mmorpg Aion community. A member of a legion called Elysium. Due to failing economics i had to move from Latvia to Ireland. Doing such i was forced to leave my gaming rig (desktop) back home. No rig = no gaming. To get me back in game faster the awesome people of Elysium put together a donation run. They threw together 700$ towards my new pc! How cool is that! :D I could have got a decent gaming machine for that price but i decided to save up and buy something that can run more than just minesweeper. lol
I had the money saved up and a lappy scoped out at bestbuy. Thing is they discontiuned it a week before i was about to order it! ><
Kicked in the gonads i resumed my search for a replacement. Alas i found G51J-A1! I was so pumped about this laptop i couldnt wait to get my hands on it. I have a deal with my legion master that ill send him the funds and he will buy the laptop for me and send it to me over the big ol' blue :)
So i sent him the $$$ just before x-mas. Due to the seasons rush time and such he was unable to secure a preorder in time before the G51JX replaced it. I was kicked in the chuds...again... Now when i look back at it, thank god things went the way they did. I looked up on the web and found the G73JH! :D I sent my friend the difference and he pre-ordered it for me! W0000! :D So yeah. Im in the same boat with you guys, playing the waiting game... I so cant wait!!! I really hope this machine is all its hyped up to be.

P.S. Thanks to all ppl with much needed info in these forums. ;)

Is G73JH's performance gonna suffer from physx powered games which are supported only by Nvidia graphics?

For those who need an ExpressCard slot it is a deal killer. They would have to select a different model.

Since when do high end laptops not include an eSata port and Express Card slot? Seems to me that Asus forgot two basic features of modern notebook systems. Did they just run out of space or are those vents taking up too much real estate? Guess they were not lying when they said they focused on the gamers this time but still don't gamers also use these two features? I ordered mine January 4th thinking it would have what was posted on XoticPc's website at that time.

Have the specs changed? I'm sure I read that it did have e-sata and maybe misread about the ExpressCard slot.
Damn. That was my solution for it not having native 3 x 3.5mm jacks out for 5.1 sound (I wish there were a term for that, make it a lot easier to write all the time). I've got an ExpressCard Dock that has them.
How am I supposed to plug it into 5.1 speakers now?

The vendors are just now updating thier sites to accurately reflect the specs. I'm not sure why it was incorrectly listed before. Why Asus decided to leave out a few very standard laptop features, I'll never know. Otherwise this laptop is near perfect as far as specs and price go. I was dead set on this laptop and now I find myself browsing other systems. I too needed an express card slot.

Well its actually more of a want. I have a express card tv/capture device which I intend to use to do some video editing. I got alot of 8mm I want to transfer to digital. My current laptop is painfully slow at re-encoding video. this laptop should breeze through it. I just assumed it would have the connection, especially since it was listed in the specs originally. Its hard to find a modern laptop that doesnt have it BUT because this beast is such a good deal considering its specs, I've been looking at clunky usb 2.0 alternatives for video editing. maybe I'll learn to live with it.
