I just grabbed a Best Buy model at $700 too. What a machine for the money! Asus shipped my Windows 7 upgrade 2 days after I ordered it.

    Good luck with it!

I've gotten much better temps on my HDD now, it's around 38C currently while everything else is about is a tad lower. My room temp + airflow (laptop is sitting on half a deck of cards + a pack of post-it notes on each side) may have been the culprits. I'll mess with the voltages/clocks after my Win 7 kit arrives or will they be unaffected after I upgrade?

2 days!? Mine still says "Fulfillment in progress" and I ordered it on the 6th and yes I provided the proof of purchase or so I hope. What did you send them specifically?

I went through the steps outlined on their website. Keyed in all the answers to their questions. That brings you to a screen with YOUR order details and an order number. They want you to email a scan of that page + a scan of your receipt to them. I put the order number as the email header and sent it off to them. 2 days later they shipped it out and it arrived today. I just finished upgrading to 7 a few hours ago.

Windows 7 seems more fluid and it definitely boots up quicker. I like it.

    Good luck!

HI guys. Just picked up the g51vx and was wondering what you guys were using as video drivers for the gtx 260m? The drivers I currently have installed are the stock 179.88 drivers that date back to may 09. I'm assuming there must be some newer/faster drivers out there. Also, what do you use to oc the video card? thanks

Just this morning Windows 7 prompted me to install a driver update for the gtx 260m. I thought that was pretty cool. Never figured it would be automatic.

What's the difference between G51Vx-A1 and G51J-A1? I think I'm about to pull the trigger on one of these, so please, someone help! :)

Also, how portable would you guys say this is? I know it's just over 7lbs, but is that bearable for a laptop? I'd like to replace my XPS m1330 with something a "bit" more powerful for gaming.

VX-A1= Core 2 Quad, G51j-A1= Core i7, which is much faster clock for clock.

Cool. Asus still advertises the VX on their site, which is why I wondered about the J, but it seems the J is a newer model.

What about portability? I know it's no m1330, but is it manageable? (I travel A LOT)

I find the G51 very portable. It weighs about as much as an Xbox 360 (little more, little less but close).

I am running Speedfan, CPUID and Everest. All of which are giving me different temps which leads me to believe CPUID is giving high inaccurate temps All of the fallowing temps are at idle. Everest was not reading a GPU temp but I sure did like when I saw the CPU temp it was reading. What do you guys think?

    CPUID:

    core #0 - 47c.
    core #1 - 48c.
    GPU - 60c.

    Speedfan:

    core #0 - 37c.
    core #1 - 38c.
    GPU - 59c

    Everest:

    CPU 31c.

Get the 9-cell battery so that your battery life gets close to 2hrs. All the reviews I read said this thing died in under 90 minutes. As far as size goes, I have the G51VX-X3A, which if I'm not mistaken has the same case with a different graphic and it fits, though tightly, into my laptop backpack. So as long as you have a decent sized carrying case, it's not bad. It's certainly no Macbook, but the weight isn't bad considering it's a gaming laptop

Thanks. Not too worried about battery life. I have a 5-hr battery on my m1330, and even though it's a 4-lb feather-weight, I hardly ever use it away from a desk. Why? 'Cause even a 13-in notebook is still too big for most domestic 1st class seats when someone recines into you; never mind coach! And if you're in international 1st class, you know space is not an issue :) One thing that does bum me out is the lack of an auto/air/ac for this thing; it would come in handy on those int'l flights, but even a 2hr battery won't cut it for that.

I think the biggest thing I'll have to do when I get this rig is clean out my laptop bag of all the extra junk I carry :) That should keep my carrying weight about the same.

The J and VX have the same graphics, a GTX 260m. The difference is that the J uses the new i7 CPUs, while the VX uses Core 2 Quads/Duos

Um...you are wrong. The only difference, at all, is that the X3A comes with Win7 while with the X1A you need to upgrade to win7. I have an X1A, and know exactly what the differences are.

anyone notice that anything about the wired internet connection. I have about 3 computer in the house and it is always the slowest and has the highest ping. Had a LAN over the weekend and whilst everyone else in my house had 5 ping I had between 21-30 ping. Now this is the wired connection not wireless. Anyone know maybe the best more correct drivers to get? I just used the ones that came on the win 7 install disk from asus.

Why don't you just use the wireless connection if the wired is messing up? Do you not have a wireless router or is there another reason preventing you from diving into the 21st century?

So after terrible experiences with external hardrives and losing all my files I want to put another harddrive in my g51, is there any guides on this forum or webpages that will point out what exactly I need and how to do it?

    What interface will I need?

If you buy a good Router then gaming over wireless is just as good as wired. I game over wireless all of the time playing CS, COD and WOW. I have never had a problem with wireless.

Get a Router meant for gaming and I promise you that you will not notice a difference.

I got my T9600 installed today while at the same time applied MX-3 to the GPU. I have some very surprising temperature results.

My stock temps were as fallows:

    CPU idle - 52c.
    CPU full load - 68c.

    GPU idle - 71c.
GPU full load using Furmark - 102c.

After installing the new processor and applying thermal paste my temps are as fallows:

    CPU idle - 29c.
    CPU full load - 48c.

    GPU idle - 58c.
GPU full load using Furmark - 89c.

I just can't believe what a huge difference this MX-3 thermal paste made. Also keep in mind the T9600 runs 10 watts higher than the stock processor.

All of these temps were taken with a room temp of 76f.

Question for G51Vx owners (let me know which submodel you have i.e. A1, RX05, etc):
Do any of you upgrade the OS to win7 64-bit? Any of you have problem when playing game (i.e. BSOD) like G51J model does?

Any suggestion which submodel I should pick? P8700 processor or Q9900. Does game nowadays utilize multicore that much that makes Q9900 have better advantage?

I don't remember any Q9900 on laptops (i think there was one for desktops that was core duo), the one that the G51 used to come was Q9000, but i dont think its available. The only G51 (aside from the i7 j/jx) is the ASUS G51Vx-X3A

Some recent games are starting to support quads, like COD MW2, probably will see more support in the future, but for now i don't see any games struggling with current C2D, but a quad core will more future proff, specially i7 :) .

Hey anybody find out if it voids the warranty if we replace the proc in these? Looking at getting the t9600 not sure it will make a difference in games though.

    yikes -

i came here looking for answers as well on what exactly to do - just ordered an x3a a few minutes ago...

still haven't come up with any specific reviews/suggestions on what updates to do that are stable that is directed at the x3a.

if i come across any in a thread, i'll forward it your direction...

I would suggest using the drivers on the ASUS support page for the wireless. Also make sure the hardware button for the WiFi is "on" (if there is one).

Yes replacing CPU will void the warranty. ASUS are sometimes lenient in this respect, but don't rely on that.

It is also correct that a moderate improvement in CPU speed may not make a noticeable difference in many games.
