My friend is being overly concerned and saying it's "dangerous" to play games on a laptop, expecting that mine will die within a year if I do that.

I'd be more diplomatic about it, but no, gaming itself won't make your computer die.

So, yes he/she can shove it.

Read Tev's optimization guide. It's made for the RX05, but everything should be about the same.

Hey guys, I've been looking at laptop coolers and am just wondering if anybody has had experience with the 'vacuum' sort of cooler which draws air out from the laptops air vent as pictured here:

Also, I'm also wondering if one of those cheap ebay cooling pads would be of any benefit (I'm aware that obviously something like an NC2000 would be a lot better :p) like this one

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Interesting thing, the one that draws air, never saw something like this before :)... I am not sure about its effectiveness though... and about how it would interact with the computer's fan. Also, you need to have a really good seal with the air grill, otherwise it'll just draw cool air from around itself.

I don't have any experience with coolers so I can't advise you on the benefits and drawbacks of the cheap ones... if you get one just make sure it blows air towards the laptop's belly, since that's where the air intake is on ASUS notebooks.

The NC2000 won't do anything amazing for the G51, but "vacuum" type coolers likely won't work well. Not that vacuums are worse, but they are designed for laptops with their air exhaust at the bottom. the G51 has it's intake at the bottom, meaning when you have a vacuum under the laptop it conflict with the cool air trying to go into the laptop. This can actually cause the laptop to heat up even worse.

Edit: Just looked at the one you had in your link. That one is actually a different model. Since it doesn't sit under the laptop it won't have the issue I mentioned above, and could actually be used with another cooler, but I'm not sure how well that works with the G51. From what I remember, some tests didn't show amazing results, or no improvement at all. It may or may not work for the G51, but probably not. I think most people found it's cooling ability to be laughable.

Hi guys, I have a couple of questions about the G51VX-X1A laptop

-how long does a 9-cell battery last, and how heavier it is compared with 6-cell battery ?

    - Xotic provides an IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU (Cools better than AS5). Is this going to solve the high temperature problem ?

1.) A 9 cell battery will (and I'm quoting the soviet here) last 3 cells more than a 6 cell. 6 cell specs can be found all over this section of the forum

2.) The problem won't be "solved" it will just be somewhat less prominent. The only way to "solve" the problem would be massive warranty voiding modifications to the cooling system. That being said, I would definitely recommend getting the paste, as it will undoubtedly lengthen the life of your machine.

Haha, wow, you guys remember posts that old? http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5210080

ICD7, along with Shin Etsu X23, is the best performing thermal paste for exposed-die components on the market. Depending on how well you apply the thermal paste, you will see anywhere from 1*C to 3*C drop in load temperature compared to properly cured AS5.

what are you guys opinions on getting a Cooler Master Notepal Infinite Cooler for the G51Vx?

Do you think it would help? (since it will help to cool the sides well and all the components such as the CPU/GPU are located at the side..)

Quick question about Norton Ghost and RAID, my G51VX-X1A just arrived and is going thru it's setup routine now. I plan to install a Seagate Momentus 320GB drive in the 2nd bay and enable RAID in the BIOS. I know I'm going to have to do a clean install especially since I plan to partition the drives @ 100GB for C: and the balance for E: Anyone know if I can boot from the Ghost 14 CD after RAID is setup, or will I need special drivers? Not much point in making backups if I can't recover.

The G51 is at the desktop, damn I'm gonna have to reduce the screen res or else buy stronger glasses ;)

EDIT: What do I do about the recovery partition when I setup RAID? Does it stay or go?

2nd EDIT: Ok, I got the RAID 0 configured and booted with the Recovery DVD. I wanted to make a 100GB partition for C: but I wasn't given the chance, just the 3 options on what partitions to recover to. How do I make the C: drive 100GB? I opted to recover to the 1st partition only, it's about 50% done now.

    Thanks again.

The heatsink and chip probably had a bad connection and you fixed it inadvertently when you applied the thermal compound and reset it.

Vista wouldn't let me shrink my 640GB C: anywhere near the 100GB I wanted so I dug out Paragon Partition Manager and booted with that. Setup what I wanted and crossed my fingers. About 30 min later it finished and restarted. Got a file check on the 1st start and it took a long time for Windows to load but on subsequent starts it's doing fine, less than 90 seconds to the desktop with the busy symbol gone. It's hard to fine tune size settings in Paragon but I manged to get 105GB C: drive and a 490GB E: drive.

In the morning I'll install Ghost 14 and see if it works and if the Ghost recovery disk will work.

Um hey, just a quick question. I got my G51 back in oh, June? and the top right rubber thingy appears to be missing. You know, the 4 rubber things that prevent the lid from directly touching the keyboard? Well anyways, I can just see a screw, and was wondering if it was originally supposed to be this way, and if it isn't, would warranty cover it? I'll try to get some pictures up when my internet isn't dying on me.

If you can remove it before/if you RMA it then you should have no warranty issues at all.

Looking throug the computer the only things that really voids are CPU and GPU related. You can change hard drives, wireless cards, and RAM without doing anything to your warranty. And if you can remove them in time, copper blocks.

well, actually it says on the asus global warranty page that any "end user or non accredited repair center" disassembling the laptop voids the warranty. question is how far do you have to go for it to be considered disassembling?

The problem with that is Asus cannot tell if it's been disassmbled or not. If your RAM blows your motherboard up--I don't think that's possible, but just saying--you just put in your old RAM and no one's the wiser.

And, besides, "disassembled" isn't defined. Do they mean removing the backpanel? The heatsink? The motherboard?

If you unscrew a screw by one thread, then it's considered disassembled.

We’re sorry to inform you that your ASUS notebook computer is not qualified for this ADW program, because your ASUS notebook computer may be either subject to different product warranty terms or the purchase of your ASUS notebook computer was made prior to Sept. 10, 2007. For example, some retailers require notebook vendors to provide one-year product warranty only for notebooks.

Please contact your original dealer for more information, if you still need to get the accidental damage warranty program for your ASUS notebook computer.

Thank you for choosing ASUS. also when i opened the box i didnt find the free windows 7 upgrade page, someone please help.
