You did read it, on the Best Buy version it says:

Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support records up to 8.5GB of data or 4 hours of video using compatible media; also supports LightScribe direct-disc labels using compatible LightScribe media

Which begs the question why would the scaled down model have it and not the high end models.

Because the high end has blu-ray which uses a different type of laser, so they havent developed a process to use that type of laser to etch into the disks.

Actually a Blu-Ray DVD drives has two laser, 1 for old school DVD's and 1 for the Blu-Ray disc. :)

FYI Lightscribe uses the CD Laser to etch the disks. It does that on purpose to not shorted the life of the more often used dvd laser.

I just bought my G50V-A1 yesterday and today, I tried to register online for the Accidental Damage Warranty but I keep on getting the message:

" We’re sorry to inform you that your ASUS notebook computer is not qualified for this ADW program, because your ASUS notebook computer may be either subject to different product warranty terms or the purchase of your ASUS notebook computer was made prior to Sept. 10, 2007. For example, some retailers require notebook vendors to provide one-year product warranty only for notebooks.

Please contact your original dealer for more information, if you still need to get the accidental damage warranty program for your ASUS notebook computer.

    Thank you for choosing ASUS."

Has anyone experienced stutters in gameplay? I've been playing BF2 and 2142 and it gets jerky every second or two. However, it is averaging 80 FPS. Im running everything stock except for the drivers Vicious recommended. I have the A1.

I have not done any extensive gaming yet but I have not noticed any stuttering. BF2142 I actually played a whole round with no problems.

EDIT: Found the driver on the spare disc they sent me. Will see if it helps any.

Everyone comments on this laptop has sold me. I ordered it on Monday 8/18 and received it today! (However, I am in SoCal)

Vicious, I do have the screen bleed on black screens, I probably wouldn't have considered it a problem if you hadn't pointed it out in your review. Still curious, however, have you had any progress on resolving this?

As I have commented somewhere it seems to have ether reduced itself or I have gotten used to it. At this point its so minor that I can live with it.

I also think maybe it as uninstalling the splendid software that reduced the bleed. I remembered many post in the past on other models where splendid cause issues with the screen like making it look grainy and stuff so I took it off when I did my clean install and I had no intentions of using it anyways.

Download any kind of half way decent monitor test and put up a all black screen and see if you see bleed. It would be nice to hear from others.

I used the Eizo monitor test you can get it HERE

I have asked a few other owners if they have bleed and they said no, so I guess I was just one of the unlucky ones.

I also noticed if you push in on the front or back of the lcd at the bottom center (below the asus logo in the front and the same area in the back) that its very flimsy. I guess its fine since there is no reason to be pushing on it but my C90S was solid there.

About the ADW register failure: I think you should contact your resellers, who in turn should contact ASUS. Looks like some database update with the new serial numbers hasn't been done on time...

So I emailed ASUS asking why the A2 came with lightscribe software and drivers, but the Blu-Ray drive doesn't support it. The email I got back was so bad:

"If a Blu-Ray printout is written on the front bezel of the ODD, you need to install the WINDVD Blu-Ray software from one of the disks that came with the system in order to play Blu-Ray disk."

Asus essentially uses the same HDD image across the board in production of a given model line, rather than specific model images based on certain internal components. This enables scaled efficiency in production and prevents errors - the majority of users wouldn't notice that they're running a working driver (with no conflicts) for a nonexistent technology capability anyway.

As for the Blu-ray issue: The Asus support person wasn't paying attention to your question. I've not heard that any of the current BD drives as even being lightscribe capable, but I might have missed something along the way.... that's the correct response that should have been replied to your question by them.

90W brick is available at BTOTech for $49. Whether that's a good deal depends on one's perspective and financial means, but you're buying the convenience of having the extra.

Cheap PS from Ebay or elsewhere are probably not a good idea, and universal PS can sometimes have into power tip compatibility issues with Asus.

    I have ordered a g50v now :D

I have ordered an Asus g50v of the model AS019K, witch is one of two available in Sweden, its specs are somewhat like a nerfed A1, with the dual HDD replaced with a single 320 gig one, the T9400 have been replaced with a P8600 an last but not least, the screen seems to have been replaced with a WXGA+(might be a error made by the typist since many of the sites I've checked gives no information whatsoever about the matter, and not one mention any resolution)

The other model available here, the AK020K seem to be the A2 for Sweden, with the only difference is that its using 2x320GB HDDs: eek:

The cost difference is approx $500... which I really cant afford

I think I'll have it around Monday :D

Given the reduced specs on the hdd and cpu, I'd expect the screen to also be reduced and that is less likely to be a typo.

You will have to confirm upon receipt, however, as you say.

Strange I would make sure the sound card drivers are installed, if they are then sounds like a hardware failure.

Do yo have sound at all?

Woo! Got BF2142 to work, thanks a lot Vicious, you were very helpful and patient! I still havent revisited trying to upgrade the video drivers, and I have yet to (re)activate my Northern Strike part of this deluxe edition dealio, and Mass Effect runs beautifully on this baby when I set it to Turbo Extreme; its like watching a movie that Im somehow part of! Freakin sweet! People who have bought this laptop, we have made the right decision, people who havent, you will not be disappointed!

Glad you got 2142 working, I played that game alot and infact got to be a partial server owner back in the day (so I have access to the server owner lounge at totalbf2142) I was really good at that game and may start to play again if I find the time.

Right now I am taking advantage of the power of the notebook and trying to go back and play games at higher settings that I never beat. FEAR, Doom3, and I am also playing Mass Effect too.

Im on the side mission with the biotic terrorist its a hostage rescue I think and man they kill me and my group in seconds....

I just got mine today, I have the screen bleed as well, it's nothing major though, I don't even notice it besides startup when it's a pure black screen. This is my first laptop that I've owned personally but out of all the laptops I've used it's by far the best. I'll be writing up a review in a few but here's a pic :)

This may be an incredibly stupid question but I just got mine today and I can't figure out how to enable the wireless/bluetooth features. Is there a switch I'm not seeing? At the moment I can't detect wireless networks or sync. Thanks.

Make sure the drivers are installed.

The switch to manually turn them off is in the front of the laptop by the little lights.

You may want to install the wireless console too if its not on there.

Ankumar, dont right click that icon, left click and an aero glass like menu should come up with the bluetooth logo and a radio tower and two others, fidn the one that says bluetooth wireless on, you have to highlight it to have it display that text and that should solve your problem.

Also anyone else have a problem connecting the express gate wireless? No matter how many times I try it still says connecting and then disabled whenever I activate it even after entering the WPA key :(

ASUS eStore might have it, in the US. But that won't help you in Sweden, unfortunately... Contact the reseller where you bought it from, see if they sell the mounting kit. Otherwise maybe the local ASUS support center will sell it to you.

What are your settings in COD4 set under with the G50? I'm having problems running it for some reason. I can run everything else just fine like battlefield maxed but even at low settings my cod4 has issues. I get hung up on objects where I can't move, tab doesn't work to see the score, I can't type anything into the console (i just hear than windows ring like when you mash lots of buttons)....Any one else experiencing this? I have low ping and a high fps.

Mine finally arrived today, I am absolutely frakkin' blown away with this thing. it has exceeded all my expectations.

    Minor annoyances:
    Bloatware( 10min to remove)
Expressgate was borked with mine, Trying to reinstall it but I keep getting a "not enough contiguous free space please defrag"
    4 partitions?! Why?

    Love:
Weight/Build and overall feel, it is NOT as overbearing as I expected it to be
Screen rez and quality. This thing puts my 22" samsung to shame
Heat! (or lack of) It runs cooler than my rig and that sucker has a heat sink the size of my skull.

I may do a quick video review at some point highlighting some nonsense about this thing that people didn't cover yet. (like how effective it is as a blunt weapon) But for now i'm back to installing all my software/games and moving photos onto it.

The fact that the ExpressGate had to be "reinstalled" after Windows reinstall, seems to suggest that it is indeed on the HDD (or at least that it depends on the bootloader on the HDD) and not on a separate device like a flash memory.

And this is also new information:
I think ViciousXUSMC reported that ExpressGate doesn't work in RAID? But he was using RAID0, perhaps it is working only in RAID1. Or maybe he just didn't reinstall it after setting up RAID.
