Build quality in a laptop is very important to me.
Thanks for taking the time out to review this awesome laptop. I have a feeling it's gonna be a grade A review. -
Am looking forward to ur review anxiously as am really interested in this gr8 laptop.
How its size compares to XPS M1530 as I own one so that will give me a good idea how big it is. -
Thanks Vicious! I don't know if I want this thing anymore...seems too big.
Just curious, shouldn't cpu-z say montevina instead of penryn? As I understand, there was a T9400 Penryn before Montevina came out but these are newer processors so how do you know the difference? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
The front side buss is one way to tell the new ones for Montevina are 1066 fsb. While Santa Rosa was 800mhz I think.
Im formatting the entire machine and setting up a raid 0 right now. Then have to start from square one again. -
Realistically, how long do you think this laptop could last if you take good care of it? I hear Asus laptops turn into crap after 2 years...what's your take on this now that you have the laptop and get a feel for the build quality?
-
Just like capella will be a platform for the forthcoming nehlam series of processors.I hope it clears . -
Nevermind, I'm slow.

fedex delay. can't get it till tomorrow. *curse the fedex gods*

I'll run you a raid0 test here in a sec rdwing. hold you off until tomorrow
-
-
Hehe 1.5 hrs ago Excaliber had 6 in stock. And now they have only 4
Have to order mine soon -
-
grr, so tantalizing to know that it's sitting in a fedex warehouse only 15 miles from here, but fedex won't let me pick it up. it's their fault the driver screwed up and well, tomorrow looks like the day.

Finally pulled the trigger and got the G50-A1.
How long does it usually take for a delivery to get somewhere? I'd assume it'd ship immediately since most of these are pre-built. -
I'm itching to pull the trigger and buy this thing now to replace my aging W7j. Someone who actually has the A1 can you comment on it's battery life with the 6 cell and 9 cell? Also is it "usable-hot" on ones lap? Don't really care about my sperm count.. just want to know if i'm going to burn my leg hair with it on me.
Thanks! -
I don't know if anyone cares but it looks like newegg has some of the G50V-A1's in stock now, I need to get a job so I can afford one of these things...

their over charging it by 60 dollars
-
There not overcharging there merely charging MSRP most likely, gentech typically discounts 3% or so off msrp.
-
hi guy, i like to know is it worth getting A2 or i should stick to A1 for gaming.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Id get the a1 because I would never use blu-ray and prefer the extra hdd space.
-
GenTechPC do you have any idea when the A2's will be arriving at your store?
-
I don't know if it was asked before (probably it was)...
I am trying to figure out which computer to get, and I've came across the new G50.
Can anyone tell me where (and when) are they available in the UK?
Thank you in advance. -
Im going to order the A1 tomorrow Friday.
Which stores will have them in stock for sure? -
Do any Xotic buyers have any updates on their systems? I'm still in phase one.
-
Guess it could be the same release date in UK as in Sweden. Here were get them in stock the 21/8 (If all goes ok, and the date set for it applys).
System i got has:
P8600, WUXGA+, 1x320GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 9700GT and the rest that is "standard" on all models. -

Hi all... I am the one who responded earlier about my order going into phase 2.. this is the email I received.
"Dear Valued Customer,
We wanted to inform you that your order has been updated with the following status & additional information:
New status: Phase 2 (Sent for Custom Building / Testing / Burn In & Final QA) 3-7 Business Days"
I am surprised that no one else has mentioned their order going into phase 2. Hopefully this week!!!
edit: Sorry guys..forgot to mention that I made my order on 8/1. I hope my information is correct. -
So I make my order on the same day as you but mine stays in phase 1? Did you order the stock configuration?
-
Dose anyone know when GenTech will start shipping out the A2's
-
-

-
I am thinking they are going to confirm everything on Monday for the credit/debit card orders. I am sure Justin and crew are getting things in order. If you did overnight, you will probably get yours before mine. I ended up doing the free ground shipping. -
I did free ground as well and am leaving for school on the 28th so hopefully everything is in order.
-
GenTech, can you please check and see what the ETA on the A2's is, I am fine with the wait its just that I am leaving on a cruise this week so i want to know if it will arrive while i am gone.
-
Still phase 1...I am thinking about canceling and ordering from someone else.
-
I'm still in phase one as well, however I called earlier today and they said it should ship mid-week? Perhaps they meant next week. I was kind of in a hurry when I made the call so they may have said, but if I did hear them right I guess that every other stage is going to be skipped and get right down to the shipping.
I was set for a partial refund due to an order change from the Sager NP8660 to the Asus G50vm-A1 and was told that it would be refunded when it shipped and it was refunded today, so I'm hopeful. We'll see.
Either way I can't see cancelling, Xotic has provided me with great customer service so far and all of their customers seem to say the same. It shouldn't be to much longer. Plus by the time you get your order in somewhere else they will probably be ready to ship out. -
@greyreap
I am really torn between the Sager NP8660 and this Asus model. Just out of curiosity, what made you decide to switch from one to the other? -
The main difference between the NP8660 and the G50 is price, size and gaming performance.
NP8600: larger, heavier, more expensive, only 1 hard drive, but better graphical power
G50: smaller, lighter, cheaper, comes with 2 hard drives but less powerful GPU -
Aw ****, I ordered mine from xotic 2 days ago with all stock specifications except for an extra 9 cell battery, which are backordered and so taken off my order, so today I emailed to ask for a 6cell and I hope they have some of those or I will go bananas because I need a spare battery for college when i am running around without electrical sockets in the middle of a lecture hall , So with all this in order I am hoping to get mine by thanksgiving. Also does anyone know where you can purchase a lone spare battery for the G50V? Man I need batteries otherwise its out to the mod shop with a car battery just kidding, I tried that with my gameboy when I was ten, I dont have eyebrows anymore... JK

As emporiumboutique said, and for me it was a matter of priorities.
I am not a huge gamer, and my main reason for buying a new laptop is to be able to record audio in high resolution with a high track count and the raid will do much more to help me achieve this than the DDR3 memory that the NP8660 offers will.
It really depends on what is most important to you and fits your needs bet. Around NBR I have a feeling that bragging rights will be granted to NP8660 buyers before Asus because of the GPU, and Clevo's constant updates which always put them on the bleeding edge of technology, if that matters to you (I think it kind of matters to most of us to an extent, but thats all trivial really). As for performance 3DMark06 scores will not even be comporable. The Sager will likely edge along 10k, while the G50V will be lucky to get 6k at 1280.
The Asus however offers many great options that the Sager does not. You have raid, instant overclocking, the oled status display, full keyboard, amazing standard warranty including accidental damage, and it will likely be much quieter under normal operation (although that is merely my speculation at this point). With raid and the instant overclocking the Asus may very well have a decent edge over the NP8660 in non-GPU dependant benchmarks and applications (and this is what is most important after all, the real world applications).
My configuration will end up costing about the same as my NP8660 configuration was at, so it wasn't even about the price for me. Based on the direct console FSB overclock differences if the ratio is the same it should produce about 3.45ghz with the X9100, so if it will keep cool with a careful application of thermal silver and a good cooler it should easily mop the floor with the NP8660 in any non-GPU dependant applications which is what I'll be working with in my audio programs.
So really my decision was based on sheer power (gpu excluded).
From what I've seen of the gaming abilities of the Asus G50V however, it should handle most modern games just fine. Maybe not all settings maxed out, but that's what desktops are for.
Again it is really all about your preferences and needs, but those are the reasons I chose the G50V. -

hi all... new laptop owner and wondering how to maximize battery life on the g50vm. I am never away from an outlet for more the 30 - 45 minutes max...
so just wondering if its good to keep the battery plugged in when using power outlet? or should i just store it outside the laptop (would that work with this model)? Because I am almost never away from an outlet and during gaming i wouldnt need to use the battery anyway.
Thanks...
