I attempted a search on this and got strange results that did not answer my question well.

Is it document as possible/impossible to upgrade the GPU of a G50V-A1 (9700m) to a 9800m?

Thanks for any information regarding this.

    *Reason for asking
    - I am getting awful framerates and discoloration. This occurs if I use the VGA connection to an external monitor, or the laptops LCD. I have reformatted, used regular drivers and custom drivers. I do not expect it to be the cable connecting the lcd to the motherboard... however I have not opened the laptop due to warranty. :)

If I can upgrade the GPU; now would be the best time.

If you are using HDMI try using a resolution that is specified in the standard. Otherwise, check your VGA cable (also length of the cable can have an effect).

HDMI gives the same result as what I described above. I also tried using a HDMI to DVI cable for my samsung 22'" monitor. I still get issues with the visuals.

Would a G50Vt X1(15.6" version) fit into a 15.4" sleeve case or should i just use a 17" sleeve case?

I'm using a backpack meant for a 17" notebook and the G50Vt X6 fits with just about enough room to stick two fingers by its side.

Can someone tell me where I can buy the bracket for the second HDD. I've been searching for a while now and it isn't in stock anywhere.

Will definitly not fit in a 15.4 inch sleeve. Why dont you just get a 16 inch sleeve if your avoiding a normal bag so much?

The drive caddy has been out of stock for awhile. Improvise.

Is there any caddy meant for another notebook that will do the job?

Have to wait for another owne to come in to be sure, Im waiting for my next check to grab myne.

From the looks of it its unlike most hard drive caddys for laptops where there is a special connector this one appears that the hard drive slims on and then the caddy just screws in around it to hold it in place. Properly supporting the drive should suffice compared to other notebooks.

Is it possible to turn off the LEDs, giving the laptop less of a "I'm a gamer" appearance when needed?

The side ones turn off for sure, I know the logo stays on not sure about the one under the logo. To me the logo on is fine, and the side ones arent that bad if theyre not flashing just have them on solid.

Personally im afraid of being in my house with flashing lights saying "Look i just spent a grand".

I'm more concerned for how it might look in a meeting. :/
The "Gamer" logo in the back is bad enough without light...
Ahh well. Guess this one isn't for me.

I think on most of the laptops there is a shield logo though most say asus if their not an rog model. The lamborghini ones i think have the bull.

ASUS just announced a business laptop thought.

Has anyone bought the G50Vt-B1? If so can't you give me feedback.

The drivers for XP should also work with B1 too correct?

I am curious about this as well. My understanding is that XP should work with the B1.

The G50VT-B1 looks to be very similar to my G50VT-A2. The B1 has a faster processor but is missing the Blu-ray drive. The rest of the specs seem the same.

If it helps, I LOVE my G50VT-A2! It is a larger laptop but all the G50VT's are the same in that regard. I do miss the size and weight of a 14" notebook but the power, speed, storage, display and (believe it or not) dedicated number pad make this my favorite laptop yet. As for XP, it should have no problems running XP. You do lose the Direct Console, Smart Log on, and IR port but everything else works great. I have it dual booted with Vista 64-bit which came with it and XP Pro 32-bit. I mainly use XP but will probably try the Windows 7 RC I just finished downloading.

    Hope this helps!

P.S. I really like the included Backpack and gaming mouse too. I thought I was just going to sell them but then I tried them and have never looked back. As far as I can tell the B1 comes with these as well.

My G50VT-B1 arrived today and all seems great with it. No issues so far. I didn't buy the A2 variety as I have a blu-ray drive for home use and have both apple and asus pcs. Does anyone know if you can buy an USB 2 portable blu-ray drive that could be used with a variety of computers?

There's plenty USB bluray external drives being sold on ebay for about $100.

    Here's one for example:

After happily gaming since this thing came out, I am having a problem. My screen has all the blue lines like my graphics are all messed up. I thought it might be overheating, but even after just turning my computer on I am now getting these blue lines. It is especially noticeable on white backgrounds. It is very aggravating because its like a blinking blue green on my whole screen. I am now thinking my video card is dying? I have been getting poorer performance in games since this started happening a few weeks ago. Has anyone experienced this? I will try and post a screenshot but I dont know if you will be able to see it. Please help!

Because nothing is showing up in the screen shot all or most of the gpu is fine. Something with either the screen or its sub components and connections.

A good way to rule out the video card 100% is to connect to an external display preferably trying both outputs.

The particular model of G50VT wont matter. The drivers on the cd for vista that are used in the XP downgrade in your case will be for the G50VT so in that respect yes. The downloaded drivers may be a different story. The wireless driver in GenTechs guide is correct for all 5xxx series i believe and it worked for me.

In short yes, might have 1 or 2 of the ones u have to download that might need a change. I installed enough to use and bench the system but had a couple of unknowns in device manager as I had not installed every single driver.

Well, I still havent figured out the flashing lines, but I have another question. Has anyone had this box appear while playing games? It comes up randomly and you cant push most of your keys. Asus tech support has been of no help to me.

    http://img24.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dumbhji.jpg

I've never had this happen on any other computer, and it has just started happening on my laptop and I cant play any games because of it.

I just received my G50VT-X1 as a replacement for my G1S.

I am very satisfied with it. I don't know why people are knocking on the screen, it looks great to me and the viewing angles are fine. The keyboard is responsive and I love having the number pad now. The look is fine with me, much more appealing than the G1S.

When I get home I'm firing up a couple games to test out this beast!

The people who mostly knock at the screen are those who have not seen or used a g50vt.It's an odd 16:9 display, so the vertical 768 pixels comes off as weird to them, even though 768 pixels on a 16:9 display is the same as 1024 on a 16:10 display

How is the support for 16:9 in games, since it is a "newer" aspect ratio?

I just purchased a g50vt-x6 from Newegg and it should arrive on Wednesday. The machine will definitely be a dual boot with Ubuntu 9.04. I have this wiki bookmarked to help me through that process, so I think that process should go pretty smoothly. I am considering getting rid of Vista and installing Windows 7 RC instead. I've seen this thread from notebook review and this thread from vipAsus so I know it's possible.

My question is, Is It Needed??? I will use the windows partition only for gaming (Civ4, Titan Quest, Galactic Civ, Mass Effect etc.) and the occasional thing that Ubuntu doesn't want to do. So is it worth the extra hassle of installing os 7 for my limited application?

I've seen the thread on bloatware/utilities, so I think I know what things I will remove. Will my computer come with BIOS 209, or will I have to update it myself?

Any suggestions for a new g50vt owner?

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Welcome me, guys! I just upgraded from a G1S-X1 to a G50VT-X6!!!

    :D :D :D :D

My old G1S did 5000 3DMark06's. From my research, I should be able to get 8200 from my new machine :D :D :D

Heh should be able to break that with drivers alone. Bios flash and proper drivers should break 9000 at 1280x1024. The processor has an effect on the score and my new cpu is pushing me to 9713 on DOX 185.85 with GTS clocks.

Wow man, nice. This machine isn't the W90VP-A2 I was planning on originally, but if the 5000 I was getting on the G1S is good enough to play Warhead at 1280x800, medium settings, I can't wait to have 9000 at my disposal :)

Are you getting that score with the CPU overclocked?

Yup, Ever since seeing the little design on the G51 ive been wanting to paint myne black and put a vinyl design on it. Besides the little silver trim on the X6 and X1 is a nice touch.

SO far i believe my lid is perfect i keep it on a desk or in my lap rarely take it out. The only objection i might have is if your somewhere where shipping would have issues.

I just picked up a G50VT-X6 and loving it so far. I had a question about the GPU temp.

after about 15 minutes of any hard gaming, ie: Bioshock or Company of Heroes, the GPU was running as hot as 85C.

Is 85C a problem for a GPU, especially after 2 hours straight? Is it a sustainable temperature, or am I pretty much crazy not to pick up a notebook cooler? And is 78C from a Zalman 2000 a much better and sustainable temperature?

That is about normal, I've gotten up to 86 or 87 with a CPU temp of 66, albeit with a hotter CPU that will also raise the GPU temp.
