I understand why ASUS keep advertising their G50Vt-X6 on Newegg :D. G50 series seem to be famous. But lots of troubles were reported and solved.

The G50 series is probably the most fire non-SLI gaming laptop you can buy.

Well, that was before the G51 came along ;)

I just found out the Modem port thats blocked out, thats actually just a peice of rubber stuck in there and the port is intact under it. Doesnt mean anything is connected to that just surprised.

The G51 Best Buy Model has a blocked out tv tuner port hopefully this will be a rubber plug as well. That way they can do what we can and just add a card.

I think this is the best place to ask this question (better than ask it in a new thread). Have any G50V(t) owner used it's IrDA port? I cannot get mine work.

    Update.

Going great, got the latest drivers and my 3DMark06 score went from 8445 to 8596. It's also running very cool (while not gaming) with an average CPU temp of 30C and that's not the best part because I have yet to apply some Arctic Silver 5 to the CPU & GPU heatsink, lol.

    Well, back to gaming

Is this for the G50vt-X1, Nvidia 9800 GS card? I mean, will it turn the 9800 GS into a 9800 GTS?

I'm trying to find all the latest drivers for my G50v. It's a pain in the ***. I have a feeling Asus updates the drivers for different laptops, but doesn't go back and list the updated driver on the G50v page.

But, if I search all the drivers manually I can find much newer versions... are these ATK drivers all interchangeable on Asus laptops so I can use them on my G50v? The ATK drivers on the G50v page are nearly a year old.

    Well.

I reached a new milestone in overclocking my G50V (as reflected in my signature).

I got 3650mhz on stock voltage. This is not a usable clock because of heat and stability, but it did hold it well until I tried to move to 3667mhz.

The link to the CPU-Z validation page is in my signature.

Well, yeah, kind of, it will clock the GS to the clock speeds of a GTS.

Little warning though, not ALL GS cards are able to handle those clocks, some might crash, others are not stable while most of them are able to take the overclock without any trouble ;)

Anyone else feel a little shafted and neglected by asus for buying this model? Got the G50VA1 and next month asus releases a newer version and then they do it again, not really pleased with that at all.

Sooo stoked, ordered my X5 yesterday and cannot wait for it to get here :D Once I save a little money up I'm going to add 8 gigs of 800mhz ram and upgrade the CPU from the P7450 to the T9900. I might overclock the GPU but it's the nvidia 9000m gs so I don't think it will be necessary.

Anyways this is the first laptop that I purchased that was up to date.
I'm moving from a gateway mx6214 with a celeron m processor that has a high rating of 406 on cpubenchmark.net. My P7450 will have a rating of 1512!

If you have a g50v, Give a shout, tell us how you like it
Personally I love my g50vt a1, plays every game I want at max settings, can't wait for mw2, little on the bulky side but I have a netbook for on the go. :D
Had mine for about 9 months

I felt that way for a little while but then I stopped looking at Asus' new models. I just play games on mine and I am happy

The primary drive bay looks like it will fit (no foam). I'm considering attempting the 750GB drive. I just don't like the 5200rpm speeds.

Hello guys. My laptop has started to run laggy and choppy. It used to run game like Empire: Total War with no problems. Now it runs choppy along with my other games too. Any ideas how to fix this? My games are unplayable.

Are you running windows 7? I had to downgrade to vista 64 to fix my game lag. Something in win 7 was causing me to play ok for a bit then the gpu would overheat and cause it to lag. Yesterday I reinstalled vista and played games I was lagging in with no issues.

well mines a g50v x1, so maybe that makes a difference. This only happened in win7, and now in vista I've been playing all day without a hitch with temps around 85ish max. I tried everything I could think of. Different drivers, pulling it apart and cleaning it, reading countless threads etc.. I would start a game at any setting such as batman aa, mass effect 2 and after 5-10 minutes my gpu would be in the 100's and clock down causing me to lag bad. There's something going on with this model and win 7 because I have read countless cases of this issue trying to get it to work. Worth a shot.

I'm considering purchasing this laptop and I wanted to know peoples experiences were with gaming on a G50vt-x5 on an external monitor.

Specifically FIFA 10 or Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Like at what resolutions will it play at a playable frame rate.

I've been looking everywhere and can't find any good information and I figured there were people out here that knew the exact answer to my question.

    Thanks!

    Hey all,

Has anyone ever got this laptop to run off a car inverter (in the US)? I've bought several power inverters that plug into the cigarette lighter/accessory outlet in my car, and it's never worked. The inverters work fine until I plug the laptop into the outlet, and then the inverters always shut off instantly. I'm wondering if this laptop requires too many volts for my car...the sticker on the bottom of the laptop states that it requires 19 Volts/120 watts input, and I believe my car's cigarette lighter maxes out at 12 volts/120 watts.

    Anyone else figure this out?

    Thanks!

You can buy more expensive inverters that are wired directly to power with a much higher fuse. They sell up to 1000 watt inverters but these required upgraded alternator in the car.

My 250 watt costs $200 with another $120 to install.

Need some quick help with my G50VT-X1. The bearings in the fan are starting to go. Has anyone found a cheap replacement fan for this laptop?

Please notice I am NOT interested in buying the $40 fan/heatsink combo from the Asus eStore. Also, I'm NOT interested in paying $40 just for the fan itself (as some websites are selling). There must be a fan that is compatible and a reasonable price ($10 US or lower).

    Thanks!

Im on my phone but the part number is on the fan and theyre usually only a few bucks. allurgroceries knows atleast one of the compatible models. Mind you the fan model sometimes has extra digits on the end noting the case style which is important. If no one has answered you by the time i get home i will get you a link or two.

Alright took me awhile to find anything but this should be the ticket

There is a compatible forcecon and the G50/51 came with 3 or so different fans. But the delta is the one I would look at ot find out which one you have.

    KDB05105HB -7F36

You will find alot of results for KDB05105HB but they wont all be what your looking for it must have the -7F36 on the end for the proper housing.

    Should look something like this:

Here is a place that sells it listing the G50 as a compatible model not saying buy it from them but just trying to find a place - Asus Replacement CPU Cooling Fan For G50V G50VT G51J G51J-A1 G51J3D G51VX G51VX-A1

Here is the exact picture of the fan in my laptop with that part number you will notice in small print bottom right of the main part you will see the -7F36 - http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h337/RainMotorsports/Disassembled/ASUS G50VTX5/DSC_9186.jpg

Has any of you proud G50v owners tried selling this beast lately?
I'm thinking of selling mine (see sig.) but i can't think of a good price to actually sell them at, considering they're now fairly old. I can only find really old posts on the internet and refurbed models are all out of stock. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Does it do the same thing if you hook it up to an external display?

@desktopsheavyonlap: Not sure offhand but I would guess north of $500, a few have sold on here around $600+ in good condition. Might want to try the Marketplace Price Check section:

    Holy thread revival Batman!

Use ThrottleStop. This thread has everything you need to know: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html

If you're too lazy to learn it and don't mind risking a BSOD, download ThrottleStop here (v5 link): Downloads

Run it, fire up your CPU benchmark of choice, enable the Set Multiplier checkbox, turn the multipliers and voltage all the way up, and then turn the voltage down a step at a time.

If you have a G50 and a midrange CPU you can likely just skip to setting the voltage all the way to 1.00V. Most midrange Core 2 Duos are very resilient CPUs and run just fine at stock clocks at 1.00V. If your CPU clocks at about 2.6GHz or higher you may have to increase the voltage a little past 1.00V for stability.

    Question:

I searched and did not find... Upgraded from Vista to 7 and need a driver for my Lacie external DVD writemaster.

I'm on the same refurbished G50 vt from years back (don't even remember!!). Still loving it, except for the overheating...

    Thanks!

Hey dtd00d, I am looking to boost the performance a bit on my machine by slightly overvolting the internal fan.
It's a PWM controlled fan and I am still learning how that works. Am I right that the power wire is always outputting 5V no matter what fan speed the thermal management chip wants? The pulses just vary in duty cycle on the tachometer wire to achieve the desired average voltage?

So I could for instance put 7V into the positive line to the fan. Now I just need a small little contraption that takes in 5V and outputs ~7V, wire it up and tuck it into the G50VT. power it through the existing fan header.
So far I found this but not sure if that holds any potential

Where allurgroceries said that the BIOS has some limitation in that it won't proceed to boot unless it sees that the optical drive is installed. This does not appear to be the case in my laptop.

I was able to remove my DVDrom drive and it booted up just fine on the SSD. I'm typing this post right now with a big empty space aching for torrents under the 10-key pad.

I didn't have to change any settings in the BIOS under the main "BOOT" tab
-Under 'Boot device priority' I did not have to disable the DVDrom drive from appearing in that list. I left it as is.
-under the main "BOOT" tab there is a section called "CD/DVD Drives". When you open it, it just shows the drive. When I had the drive removed, this whole section had disappeared from the "BOOT" tab.

I am running BIOS 213 (latest)

So now the test would be to get a caddy and plug a drive in and see what happens. There is still the possibility of the BIOS not liking having a hard drive on that SATA port.

Hey ickibar (new account? I remember your name from somewhere on here),

You're right about the fan wiring. Here's a thread I link around for more questions on it, you probably have seen it before: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/560381-g50vt-fan-cable.html

If you want to overvolt the fan to 7V, that's quite a step up. 5.5V or 6V might be sufficient and a little safer. In my experience 5.5V brought the fan speed up almost 10%, so it's a fairly linear conversion. Just be prepared to purchase a new fan if it all goes wrong (for example New Asus G50 G50V G50VT x5 G50V x1 CPU Cooling Fan | eBay).

You can put something in line with the red wire since that's 5V, though I'm not 100% sure if that will cause problems with the PWM (blue) line since that also works on 5V. The general idea for the circuit would be something like

    laptop source (red wire) +5V
    boost circuit in +5V
    boost circuit out +7V
    fan +7V

The part you linked looks perfect since it goes to 6V and can do a 1A output if needed. Only problem is it looks... small. Completely tiny. You'll need some fine soldering skills and equipment. Make sure no fan wires touch anything else on the motherboard and you should be good to go in theory. You can also look into common voltage regulators like the 7806 since you're looking to boost a constant voltage.

    Hope this helps!

That's interesting, good for you. I always thought it was bizarre not to be able to boot without optical on my A2.
