hey i bought an A2 just yersterday. but already have issues
my wifi doesnt work even with the wifi switch on it turned on
i tired everything fn f2 but nothing seems to work...i actually turned off the switch once then when i turned it back doesnt change anything
i have also a dead pixel on the top of the screen its white so quite annoying. and is it normal that the screens oftens turns on / off when i open a new program ? any program like msconfig....
called the support this morning apparently there sending ups on monday but havent received a mail for confirmation yet ..
nobody got the sames issues ?
hopefully they will repair / or change it fast ...
and last question on the lcd display it says it uses around 30% memory even when i do nothing ? is this vista ?
thank you
-
The 30% is most likely Vista; you can turn on task manager to see what's using your ram. I haven't had any of the issues you mentioned. I'm guessing that windows live messenger crashes sometimes because of the 64 bit os for me, but I'm not sure. Haven't tried the wireless yet. My main problem is with the hibernation >_>.

has anyone been able to get the OLED screen working with MSN?
-
you can then toggle it on or off from the same menu you would change ur status.. theres an option called "Turn - on Direct Console"
But either way i find it kind of useless, because the OLED lags, so by the time it plays the message, i would have already typed an answer and recieved a respone
I mean if you're running a full screen game, it might work at getting ur attention, but other then that... its kinda useless
I think they would have gone better by allowing us to put the time there... because i often lose track of time while gaming... hence i end up rushing my school assignments at midnight XD lol -
what version of msn are you running... i have done all those steps and it still isn't working
-
Windows Live Messenger
and make sure you still have direct console installed o.o -
I'm running WinXP on my G50V.
And when i'm runing remote desktop connection (RDP) agains my windows 2003 server everything is going very slow... realy to slow.
When using Vista on the same G50V the RDP connection is quick and there is no problems... Other computers in my network that is running WinXP has no problem connecting to the Windows 2003 server.
This is very annoying!!
Any one that has experiened it? Any solutions?

Hey
So I just noticed a few annoying problems with my A1 today. It was in sleep mode, then when I woke it up, a few error messages appeared. First, I got a C++ error message saying runtime error. and direct console had caused runtime to terminate in an unusual way. After closing the window, direct console doesn't work (by clicking the touch sensitive button on keyborad) I had go to programs, and open direct console. WHen I do, direct console doesn't open on my screen, but then when I hit the keyboard shortcut, I can access it then. Also, WMplayer setup runs, Outlook setup runs, and I get another error message, ASg.exe has stopped working, or something like that. Sorry for the poor documentation, I will note it better next time I see it happen. Has anyone else experienced anything similar upon waking up from sleep mode or hibernation? Last items I installed was updated graphic drivers, Zune Launch software, and 3dmark. -
i did everything to get the OLED to display my msn messages
and just gave up...i mainly RDP into my desktop to run everythin anyways, so msn usualy runs on it as well...so no point in having it run on that screen
i did everything i could, and was defeated -
So last night I was on my computer, using microsoft word and then I downloaded a driver from HP for my printer. At around 2am, a bit after the software finished installing my computer shut down and restarted, without any prior warning. When it did, I got the direct console error message again, and the Outlook setup. I tryed opening/using WOrd and it stops responding continuously. The thing that is bugging me tho, since then, is that I had a 100% CPU load, while idle on my desktop. Lowest I get is 70% usage, but mostly in the 90s and 100. Task manager reveals the process "System" using about 70 CPU, described as "NT Kernel & System". Below that is "System Idle Process" at 20 cpu and described as "percentage of time processor is idle." Everything else is at 0. Any help?
Edit: Fixed itself upon restarting Direct Console.... -
I've had all of the above problems you mentioned. Seems like the self restart was with windows updates so I could just change those settings. I did get that same C++ error once before (actually only once or twice, back to back) but the restart cleared it and hasn't happened in a few weeks. I also get CPU usage at a high rate but it's only temporarily and then goes back to zero. Like right now I'm just using IE and nothing else and am at 0% CPU usage. But if AVG is scanning or other programs are running it will go up. I do get it high for seemingly no reason (as you mentioned with System) and haven't 100% figured that out. But it goes away after a few minutes so it must be part of a scan or service that I just haven't pinpointed.

Also, those that are freaking out about their RAM being used up. DON'T WORRY! I was freaked out too and killing myself trying to figure it out and tweak it to get around it. Vista uses that RAM but when you need it, it gives it back to you. If you're gaming in full screen you get priority over the smart indexing. -
so its normal to be using 40 - 50% of my ram when just idling?
Its just sorta curious because my friend, with 2 gigs of ram versus the g50's 4 gigs, uses the same 40 - 50% that I do -
-
I've got 43% of my 4 GB of ram used right now and all i have open is firefox (which is quite a bit tbh), word and msn

We're not allowed to discuss the latter program here i don't think (darn orwellian Apple EULA). XP however should be well possible. Ask in the general Asus forum. I'm sure someone's done it.

hi everyone...this is my first post.
just ordered the G50V-A2 off newegg last night. ever since i got a ps3 i started going bluray, so i decided to get the A2 model w/ the bluray drive.
looking forward to a notebook that can handle all the games i like to play as well. i have a desktop setup with (2) 9800gx2 cards in quad-sli, but i've never had a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.
well, looking forward to its arrival - should get here thurs or fri. -
Really stoked, guys...just ordered my G50 and it was shipped this morning from Newegg. They had $150 off MSRP so it came to just over 1700 w/ 2-day shipping to HI. I seriously spent a week or two deliberating and going back and forth between this and the NP8660 and finally chose the G50 based on Vicious and GenTech's reviews. Last laptop I had I bought almost 3 years ago and it was finally time to say goodbye to my trusty HP dv8325nr. All the other geeks on my boat bought their $3000+ Snailienware SLI monstrosities at the beginning of the year and I'm sooooo looking forward to bringing Crysis with me and watching their jaws hit the floor.
Since I'm on a submarine a whole lot, I needed something that packed a huge punch in a small package, but I do have one question...how long is the cord and power brick? I'm trying to figure out if I need to pick up a small extension cord before I get back to the boat with this since outlets are few and far between. Also, are there any precautions some of you travelers take to make sure the G50 doesn't come out all bruised and battered once you reach point B? -
I got the asus g50 v2 yday? what should i do now with it?
lik tests to see if its runnin at top speed and to learn more about how to use it and get apps to make it run better and be more enjoyable -
Just don't let Crysis anywhere near it at you'll be fine. -
The cord and power brick is roughly 2 meters long I think. Might not be enough for you but power extenders should be cheap enough. Asus provides a backpack with the G50V so I just keep it in there when I'm not using it. Its fairly well padded. -
Crysis runs fine at medium high at 1280xwhatever it is.
-
Even if it trumps in a few fps, it means more to me that I found a laptop that cost almost half as much that's just as capable and doesn't take up a massive amount of space. I've been watching AW for the past three years and not once have I looked at their lineup and said to myself "well, that seems like a good deal." Forget paying a premium just to have a customized LED scheme...I'll stick with ASUS.
Can anybody share their WEI for the A1 after going into RAID 0? I've seen a couple of pre-RAID WEIs and I'm just curious if Vista notices the change to RAID...hoping for a 5.9 on primary disk speed -
installing crysis right now actually... -
I'm looking to buy a notebook sleeve for my G50V-A1.
Since its bigger than the average 15.4 incher, would I have to get the 17' size ones to fit it? Or would it fit normally? -
IIRC, Vicious had a RAID WEI score on his review of the G50. I think it got a 5.4, which cam from.....something. I've no clue.
-
Hey everyone. Just registered as I became a new laptop owner for about two weeks now and loving it. I am the very proud owner of the very awesome G50V-A2 and I have to give props to the forum reviews posted by ViciousXUSMC and a few others as that helped in my decision to purchase this great laptop. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great laptop. Only issue I've had so far with it has been in regard to my external eSATA HDD & the "2nd reboot" issue if I update the BIOS but I'm hopeful the 207 BIOS will resolve it. It's still not a deal-breaker though by any means. Anyway, there's a great collective of knowledgeable people on these forums so I'm excited to learn lots from everyone. Cheers!

Hello all. I just received My G50V-x1 today. Still haven't got a chance to play on this baby. I have an issue. here is my thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=303608 Please help me out
-
Ok update...got my A1 yesterday and it really is bigger than I thought...we put it side by side with my friend's 17" MBP and there's not much of a difference in size...but the screen is GORGEOUS.
I'll back up Vicious' review that there are no jumpers on the A1 hard drives, but be careful when you're screwing the backplate to the laptop back on...some screws are longer than others and there's one that's skinnier than the long screws and only goes next to the fake vent. However, when you stripe the drives for RAID 0 and run the WEI score, you get 5.9 on the primary disk, so everything will be 5.9 except for 5.6 on gaming graphics.
One more caveat...BIOS version 205 is now available from ASUS' support site, but when I installed it, it couldn't find the OS on reboot. BIOS confirms that the new version installed, but I had to do a clean install all over again which, when done right, takes a sweet amount of time. Luckily, I'd only just run my AVG and Windows updates and hadn't started installing media yet.
All in all, GREAT laptop. Thanks Vicious and Gentech for writing reviews that compelled me to buy this! -
Anyone else getting driver errors constantly? Kind of pissing me off at this point, especially since my disks are misplaced somewhere in my messy room. I just want my webcam to work and I want the unit to stop thinking it has an onboard VGA... Arg
-
Should be 5.9 on the WEI for HD's on RAID 0
-
So for those using a RAID who want to update their BIOS to 205...you'll need to go into the BIOS screen (press F2 at POST) and change your IDE Configuration back to RAID again. The update resets all the BIOS values back to default...that's why it wasn't recognizing my OS being installed.
Additional notes after a few days of messing around.
1) UAC is Microsoft's worst protective feature ever. You'd figure social darwinism could just play its part on those who want to screw around with something important instead of facing a barrage of "are you sure you want to do this" prompts.
2) Since this is a 64-bit version of Vista, some of the games you were able to run just fine previously won't on the G50. To fix this, you have to start up the Program Compatibility Wizard (just go through Vista's Help file to find it). When you're there, select it to run like XP Service Pack 2 and without Visualization Effects. Reason I mention this is because my first attempt at installing The Sims Complete Collection went screwy and this was what ended up fixing it.
3) Someone previously mentioned in either this forum or another one that the GPU in the A1 (and A2) support Physx processing. I HIGHLY recommend you guys follow up on this. NVIDIA has a pack available with some fancy stuff showing off what its cards can do, including a game called Warmonger which was written to utilize the physics processing of this GPU. Best of all: it's all free*.
*I don't work for NVIDIA so this was not a shameless plug. Now put away all of your projectile objects. -

I updated from stock bios to beta 206/207 (forget wich it is lol) and had no problems.
I know that you ALWAYS after doing a new bois have to press F2 and then F10 to save an exit to reinitialize everything. In this case if you made changes from the stock settings such as RAID rather than Enhanced you need to turn that back on too of course. -
Wow I love this laptop - which is my first ever by the way.
Played some Half Life 2 last night - settings maxed with 2xAA. It looks so good.
Then I put in Bioshock - oh wow that's gorgeous.
I am looking forward to trying out the Physx features mentioned by neo_styles. -
also visious, for updating bios, do you need a usb floppy drive to update? the aflash utility off the asus website, it sates that my version of windows is incorrect. -

No bios flash is made super easy, its built into the bios.
Just save the new bios file to an easy to find place like the C:
Go into your bios and over in one of the advanced tabs should be Asus EZFlash, run it, find the new bios file, flash, reboot, enter bios after flash, change any settings you need to change, and save&exit.
Make sure your on mains power not battery, and make sure you enter the bios and save&exit after the flash even if you do not need to change any settings. -
Uhm...just use WinFlash. Much easier.
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Isnt winflash for gpu bios?
EZFlash is so easy I do not see how it can be easier plus its the safest method.
I use Winflash on my desktop to flash my 4850's because I moded the bios on them for a faster fan speed and higher voltage. -
where did you find that beta bios? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Ken posted it on the forums somewhere.
I think people said the new 205 bios on the official Asus page is doing good too. -

No, I think the occasional keyboard lag was fixed for me. I have not noticed it since, and it added the option to toggle into a secondary key mode to "fix" the key combinations that didn't work.
If you want more performance, streamline your system, defragment, overclock. Things like that. Usually a bios is only going to fix issues or add features. -
another issue i want to ask about
has anyone attempted to transfer files over a gigabit switch with there g50v? i am getting fairly slow speeds, and just wondering what anyone else is getting?
i know the hard drives are only 5,400 rpm, but i am topping out at 16MB a second. just seems really slow -
t is hard...you have to make sure it's Gigabit all the way through...every single piece of equipment needs to be 1000base. Otherwise it'll all slow down.
-
its still quite slow -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
The overhead makes it much much less than what its rated. It may be correct speeds.
1 bit = 8 byte
1000mbit /8 = 125mbyte
125 - overhead.... = ???
Plus I know when I xfer files I only get max speed after it has "warmed up" by moving for awhile and usually on when its moving single large files, when its picking up tons of small stuff it cant move at max speed. -
i'm actually getting faster transfer speeds via my laptop over my gigabit network than my desktop. Which was quite odd. Gotta figure that out later.
