one more thing, is there any way to buy the G1s cheaper? (with 4 gigs of ram.) because it's a little over my price range. (my price range being under $2000.)

Unless you're using Vista X64 forget 4 gigs of ram. Vista can't detect 4 gigs and there are hardly any applications that will use those 4 gigs.

i thought more then 4 gigs was 64 bit. not 2 or 3 gigs. Vista will run "ok" with 2 gigs. i still think 4 gigs of ram will make it better.

Supposedly the most you can have is 3.5 gigs if you have 4 gigs of ram. Just google "vista 4 gigs" and you'll get an explanation. There were some board members who got their G1s with 3 gigs of ram so I'm sure they can tell you if it was worth it.

vista 32 bit only sees around 3.5gigs of ram cuz it uses the rest of the memory address space to address devices and such. if you get the 64bit vista, it should see all 4 gigs. but i hear the drivers for the 64bit vista are not so great, and in any case, you wont see that much of a performance gain from 2gig->4gig.

thanks for the help. the 8600 GS has shard memory so i thought having as much memory as possible was good. if i have 2 gigs it barrows around 765 MB leving only 1.25 gig left for ram and with vista thats not allot.

(sorry i did not finish my sentence) ... so having 3 gigs is better. the G1s with 3 gigs ram + tax is $2094 just around my price range.

O and thanks for the help 70moyo and korg! =)

I'm interested in the Asus F3SV (the G1S is a bit out of my price range)

I'm curious how the screen is in quality compared to stuff like Macs and Sony vaio (I know off topic, maybe I should try in a different thread..)

he said that GeForce 8600m GT 256mb uses plus 767MB from our memory ram shared, so 2 Gigs - 767mb of (shared video memory) = 1,233 Gigs so our real memory ram is not 2GB, its 1,233GB,
so that means Vista will use a lot of Ram memory, leaving us with just a few amount of ram for actually use in other stuff (like Multimedia while gaming)
so does it worth get 3Gigs Ram or the 2Gigs can take care of all this work ?

The 8600mGT can use that much memory, but it doesn't need to. If you're worried about ram, just turn down the amount of shared memory it can access. 300-400mb should be plenty of total VRAM for the 8600mGT.

I can't find whether SLI works for Vista anywhere..can anyone confirm if Vista released a quickfix for SLI yet? Last info I heard 2 months ago was that SLI was not supported.

Ken, a 3dmark06 score of 2032 for the F3SV-B1 means it's graphically weaker than the old A8Js?

Guys, 32-bit systems "See" all 4 GB of RAM. They only allocate 3 GB per program at any time, so for games and design and such, there are only 3 GB of RAM effectively, but if you have two or three applications open, each one can use up to three, so the more programs you have open the more you will notice 4 GB. HOWEVER, 2 GB is currently enough to handle any and all of your performance needs, 3GB is much more than enough and 4GB is simply wasteful.

    XPS 7900gs (256mb) or 8600m GT (512mb)

this has probably been answered already but can someone tell me which would be better for keeping future proof. Im not entirly bothered about dx10 games but if they have better performance on a 8600m gt let me know. I also plan on getting crysis so which would offer a better experience. And does the 8600m GT really perform much better overclocked? how big a difference? Thanks for any replies. My laptop future depends on it! :)

heres the link for the 8600m GT lap http://www.rockdirect.com/viewNotebook.php?pName=PEGASUS%20670

The 8600mGT and the 7900GS have very similar amounts of raw power. However, as time goes on you'll see the 8600mGT perform better in games that have DX10 optimized code. Therefore the 8600mGT is the better option for future-proofing your laptop. As for overclocking, yes the 8600mGT performs much better overclocked, say somewhere around an additional 15fps in a game, depending on settings and everything of course. Possibly the difference between 20fps and 35fps on new games, like Crysis.

But on the other hand, the 8600M GT is a bit bandwith starved compared to the go7900GS (128 bit vs 256 bit), leading to lower performance, so at higher resolutions, it will fall back (for now). If you can wait for a while and want more performance, wait for 8700M or 8800M.

I wouldn't call it "bandwith-starved." As far as I can tell, the 8600mGT appears to max out the 128-bit bandwith, but it doesn't appear to be limited too much by the bandwith. It's true that it might be able to take advantage of the 512mb GDDR3 better with a 256-bit bus, but then it wouldn't be able to fit into a 15.4" screen with 2-3 hours of battery life, would it?

    OT question:
Is the SPDIF output optical on the G1S?

If i'm gonna buy a laptop it's absolutely necessary that it comes with an optical SPDIF output, so I can utilize 5.1 through my receiver.

Anybody tossed BF2142 at this card yet with high settings for everything and 2xAA this is what I run (1920x1080) on my desktop, its an older desktop that I built 2 years ago so I wouldnt be supprised to see a brand new notebook get similar performance.

If it can kick out the same fps that would be awsome.

I could probably go off 3dmark scores for the most part but thats not 100%

That was a maybe anyways I cant recall if full version did or not. I think it does but havnt played in so long that I cant remember.

I'll check when I get home.

Infact that would be a good XP vs Vista x64 test to run since I know it will be identical and see if my score varies.

just wrote it in another thread: my biggest problem about those in-game-benchmarks is that i can never really tell if the results are decent or crap. I'm not the casual BF2, CS:S - player that i have all my FPS using the according resolution in mind.

It would be perfect if anyone could set up a standard for this, and that we've got the results from several laptops we can compare to each other (Fraps would be great for that).
