9600M is the next generation
Of course the next generation will bring new and better MXMII cards. I'm talking about the GF 8-Series (which won't bring anything better than the 8600M GT for MXMII probably) because waiting for the next generation to put it in the C90 makes no sense.
You'll have to wait one year for the 9-Series to come out, this means you can wait for the next-gen C90 as well

The GPU is the only legitimately upgradeable part, isn't it? Unless somehow ASUS unlocks the ability for a Q6600, 4GB RAM, everything is pinned on the GPU being upgradeable down the line.
-
-
Ah, But is it worth it to go from a e6600 to a e6700. Whats the main diffenrece, clock speed?
-
No. The difference is +1 multiplier, wich gives +266 mhz. Difference will be unoticeable, espcially for the price difference
FYI, the 6750 is already same price as the 6420, so the only C2D that worth the price/performance right now is the E6750 but it's 1333 FSB -
GPU, I've mentioned.
RAM is limited to 3GB as well as 533Mhz (maybe 667?) last I checked. Buying faster/more RAM seems pointless.
CPU, with the auto-overclock feature, the E6600 already goes to 2.93Ghz, which is another limit. Even upgrading from an E4400 won't net you significant performance differences.
The thing is, most people have been more or less maxing out their systems when they first buy it with an E6x00, 3GB RAM, etc. Due to the limitations of the 945 chipset, only the GPU has a legitimate chance for a real, relevant upgrade. -
It's still freaking cheaper than an equivalenent Santa Rosa. A E6600 will do the job easily for some year...
-
I'm not arguing price/performance. You're right.
-
Yes, the GPU is the only significantly upgradeable part. Santa Rosa notebooks are in general more upgradeable than their corresponding desktop 945 notebooks (because of CPU and RAM upgrade possibilities.)

how fast is too fast?
C90S overclocked:
Conroe E6420 2.13 GHz
3GB RAM
Seagate 120G 7200rpm
Driver: Stock driver (works with BioShock) and can only overclock with stock driver
Overclocking software: Riva Tuner
Turbo Gear mode: Standard Mode
C90S 3DMark06: 4602 @1280X1024 (new record)
C90S 3DMark06: 5674 @1024X768 (new record)
-
Your second one says 1280x1024, but it should say 1024x768.
-
-
Still not fixed, now it says 1280x768 instead of 1024x768.
-
-
You said it can only overclock with the stock driver, which driver is that? Because you should be able to OC with no problems up to the 158 series or so (unless that's what Asus is releasing as stock).
-
I got 3DMark06 score 2100 using modded driver download from laptopvideo2go.com -
Nice... i hope this (C90 class) goes as a trend.. (and desky might disappear.. jk.)

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah asus believes in a few years the desktop market will dissapear anyways. Possible since the jump in laptop purchases over the years.
So Ken how does that temp compare to the g1s temp when running 3dmark? In general did you notice any problems with overheating when gaming with those settings? -
I'd rather like modular notebook hardware than desktop hardware in a notebook.
-
-
And battery lifetime decreases by 50% whereas heat increases by 50%. That makes no sense for a laptop.
-
KEN, can you please run it in turbo gear overclock mode now at 2.93gz???
-
I'm impressed at the scores
Though who knows how fast and hot it'll be for laps -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Mine doesn't scorch my lap until I game with it and the plastic gets really hot and doesn't cool back down so easily. With that gpu temp seems like a scorcher. Can't wait til we get enough stats to post it up on gaming section and rub it in the face of the c90 doubters. Best part is there is stil more to come.
-
It's written on the C90S Manual (on CD) " Using this notebook on your laps may be damageable for your Notebook and/or your health"
-
lol... you see why a notebook with desktop hardware is not a laptop?
The concept of a modular, upgradeable notebook is great but I'd like to see one with real notebook hardware. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
No notebooks are really supposed to be used on your lap. Hence the transition from being called laptops to be called notebooks. Main reason is because of ventilation. When I lounge on my bed and watch tv and put a pillow on my c90 the gpu gets hot because the vents are blocked off. Same with your lap, your clothing blocks the vents.
Only reason desktop cpu is mainly because of the lower price. -
You're right!
It's not just because of ventilation but because of health concerns. -
O_O
I just made the link lap- top (english isn't my main) -
*yougotit*
-
-
To be fair, there are plenty of notebooks that can be used on one's lap. No, they won't get 5k in 3dMark 06, but that's kind of the point.
-
-
Yeah, and I love it!
But I'd love a modular/upgradeable V1S even more. As I said, I like the concept of modular notebooks and the C90S is a great concept but I think these notebooks should be based on notebook hardware as well. All notebooks should be built like the C90 and combine the advandtages of both notebook and desktop PC. The C90 does this, but it brings new disadvantages, so the concept is still not perfect. -
I hear ya maati. But if it walks like notebook, and quacks like a notebook, and looks like a notebook, it's a notebook!
The Ferrari I'm typing this on gets too hot for the 'lap' and it's all 'mobile' components. These daze I call them notebooks anyway -
But what do we call a modular notebook? I'd like a notebook that walks, quacks and looks like one from outside but looks like the C90 inside
-
I guess we're going to have a water-cooled notebook soon
-
Maati, we already have those. The only thing that makes the C90s any more "modular" than other mainstream notebooks is the MXM formfactor GPU, and their are other "mobile" notebooks with the MXM formfactor. For extreme power, look at the Alienware m9750 and the Clevo M570RU. The first has 2x MXM-III in SLI, dual SATA HDD's, and up to 3-4GB of RAM on the 945 chipset with the Merom processor. The Clevo has an MXM-IV, SATA HDD, up to 8GB RAM and a Penryn processor on the Crestline chipset. If you want a 15.4", how about the Compal IFL90? MXM-II, Sata HDD, Crestline chipset... It's just as upgradeable as the C90s in pretty much every aspect, and it's more upgradeable in the processor and RAM aspects.
-
-
No I don't have any problems with overclock when gaming, no artifacts, no freezing. -

Sgt. Hollywood Notebook Evangelist
Ken, what driver are you using for that benchmark, as I've read that the current drivers have an OC lock out?
-
This is the only driver I can overclock the GPU.
