Hello Cocoman, thank you for the answer. The issue persists with Windows 8 as well with and without any additional software. Only way I can work with USB 3.0 is to plug the device and reboot the computer. After booting up device is recognized and working well as USB 3.0 device. Do you have any issues with USB 3.0 under Windows 8?

I've now bought and installed a fresh copy of windows 8 pro on the 32gb iSSD of my ux32vd-r4002v.

Installed most drivers but still have 2 unidentified: "pci simple communications controller" and "unknown device"

Fn buttons work but the powerbutton does not(?) in windows 7 a menu popped up if you pressed the powerbutton for 1sec where you could choice sleep, powerdown etc. But now notting happens, only if i hold it long enough to shut the power (4sec). I have installed atk_package and asus power, still nothing...

    Anyone has solutions?

I upgraded my UX32VD to Windows 8 yesterday and used the Upgrade Adviser thingy.
The problem is that now I am not able to boot to recovery (OEM partition) using the F9 key.

Is there anything I can do? :(
    Thank you all in advance.

Have installed latest intel wifi driver still the pci simple communicationscontroller missing driver.

For the powerbutton thing driver was installed but I had to change the powersettings in windows to "sleep" on the powerbutton so now its working fine :)

Yes but I don't use the metro gui, so uninstalled most of the "apps" from it. Should be sweet if there was an option to login straigt to desktop (without installing 3rd party programs). Hope asus update the atk_package driver for ux32vd soon cuz i missing some features, like Fn+Space for power profile etc.

i've got the exact same problem. I actually ordered a $25 gigabit usb to ethernet adaptor from amazon and that is working firne (which is odd since it uses the same chipset.)

absolutely a problem with the asus usb to ethernet adaptor....

I finally found out that it wasn't compatible with my D-Link DIR-855 Router. When I plugged it directly to my Broadband modem it worked. I'm going to try with another router as well and see what happens.

    Hi Everybody,

First of all, for everybody who has unknown device ATK/4001 - this is an Asus Radio Control. By pressing Fn+F2 you are activating or disabling Airplane mode, which switch off any wireless applications.

To enable this - please install:

Windows 8 32bit: Downloads - ASUS Tools - Asus Wireless Radio Control
Windows 8 64bit: Downloads - ASUS Tools - Asus Wireless Radio Control

The only issue with Windows 8 I have - is not working (or not working stable) USB 3.0. Does anybody else has issue with USB 3.0 under Windows 8?

Did you install the windows 7 drivers? Just checking, because you shouldn´t. Windows 8 has native support for USB 3.0 and any additional driver would conflict with it.

No, I didn't. The device manager says Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible host controlles has only Microsoft Driver 6.2.9200.16420 from 19.09.2012. I believe this came from Windows Update. However, with default "Out of the Box" driver there is the same issue: USB 3.0 isn't working properly, most of times can't recognize device at all, sometimes recognizes it as USB 2.0. As already mentioned, when Windows is booted with device plugged it - usually it's recognized and works well. I tough it's software issue.

Have you (or anybody else) permanent success with USB 3.0 devices on UX32VD under Windows 8? If yes, which driver versions do you have?

Hey guys. Waiting on my UX32VD to ship. Meanwhile I was curious. How flush does a standard SD card sit in the card reader? I ask because I'm putting a 256GB SSD in there but have another 128GB worth of stuff I would like to cram into the thing, whiches doesn't really require high speed storage.

The SD card only goes in around 1cm, so about 1,5-2cm will stick out. So leaving an SD card in får extra storage is not a good idea

I will install windows 8 this weekend. I did have problems with USB devices in Windows 7, but got it fixed by uninstalling the ASUS USB charge utility. If its not the case, then probably is a driver problem. I will let you know if I have problems on Windows 8 on the weekend.

Quick question... when swapping the HD for a SSD has anyone here tried to clone the old drive over to the new SSD or is everyone doing a bare install of Windows? I don't want to repurchase windows 7 if I don't have to.

Or is is possible to make the rescue disk and then install the SSD and use the rescue disk to restore to the new ssd?

As I wrote before, you can create the AI-Recovery disks and then use them on your SSD. They will recreate the recovery partition which will then restore your Windows 7. You will have a lot of uninstalling to do but it seems stable and fast. Did a geekbench and got 8086.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this is a noob-question but I am buying my UX32VD next month and I am planning on upgrading to the 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM STICK.

    My problem is:
What memory should I buy and what SSD?

I am looking at either the KINGSTON 8GB or Corsair Vengence 8GB
Also checking out SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256B/WW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OR the OCZs vertex 4

I don't know what I should get can someone please tell me the best way to go?

Also I have a question with the onboard SSD. What do I do with that when I install my new SSD should I install a FRESH win7 on the new SSD or the cachedSSD. What do I use the cachedSDD (24GB) for anyways? thanks so much

I've got a weird problem that I wonder if anyone else has seen.

My UX32VD was working fine and fast, and I was going to have a go at upgrading it to Windows 8. Windows 8 installation failed with no specific error or log files or anything, so I figured it would be a good idea to install the one remaining windows update that I had been avoiding - the WDDM Intel Display driver for HD4000 chips.

Halfway through the driver install from Windows Updates on Win 7 x64, the screen blinked and went blank, as expected for a display driver. However.... It never came back! It stayed blank, and the screen's backlight was on, and the machine was running fine without me being able to see was going on. And so this condition has persisted through reboots and OS swaps (I put in the original drive that it came with, just to see if it would work, since I had installed my own Samsung 830 series drive). I can't even get to the BIOS. The screen's backlight turns on just fine, and I can dim and brighten it, and Windows 7 boots correctly (I can hear startup sounds and can access it remotely with LogMeIn), but the screen remains stubbornly blank.

I tried connecting an HDMI monitor, and to my surprise that worked. However, the laptop's display still would not start working. I checked the display properties, and it seems to have a driver installed for a generic 1024x768 60hx panel, which is obviously incorrect, but must be because the panel isn't correctly representing itself to the OS. I also tried forcing a custom resolution using the Intel GMA software, but that failed with an error that said something like Bandwidth Exceeded.

    Anyone help? :(

    Hi,
I've recently bought a Zenbook UX32VD-R3005V and I'm really enjoying this ultrabook. I never had any problems with it, but for some reason, Windows7 in idle state, or when he has just started, is consuming 3.4Gb RAM... I've 10Gb RAM and the remaining memory is enough for my tasks, but I think this is not normal. When I start the OS, I've something like 90 processes and a lot of services in the list.
I still have some bloatware from Asus, but if I sum each process (Asus) consumption, in the Task Manager, the overall result is just only 50Mb.
    Anyone has the same issue?

The new SSD will be much faster than the "cached" SSD. So install in the new SSD. Idealy you could use the "cached SSD" for the pagefile (virtual memory). thats the only good use I think there is for it, besides installing Linux on it.

About the memory, Samsung is the better choice, but also depends on the prices you can get. Just make sure the vertex has the right height to fit inside.

Sounds like a bad display. Loose display cable or hardware problem. If you can´t even see the BIOS startup process, Its defenitly not software related. Send it back to Asus.

Planning ahead for the weekend my move to Windows 8, I checked a little bit the problems with USB 3.0. On some sites there are posts that say that there is a parameter in BIOS that fixes the problems for some people. Could you please test it?
Enter the BIOS by presing ESC on boot. On USB settings there is an option that says PRE-BOOT XHCI or similar (I don´t remember the exact name). In our UX32VD it is on Auto by default. Change it to Enabled. Try USB devices to check if problem is solved.

I think it should work. There is some good reasoning behind the solution, but I can´t test it since I don´t have Windows 8 yet.
If it doesn´t work, to remove any other variable, could you confirm you have the latest BIOS? I think its v. 12

Damn, what fun. I'm just confused about it being a hardware issue, since it happened during a driver install. I did open it up and unplug and re-plug the LVDS connector, but that didn't fix the problem. I also unplugged the CMOS battery and main battery in hopes that it might reset something, but that didn't work either. All that did was activate my Intel Anti-Theft, which confused me until I was able to hook up an external screen and see that it was asking for my password. I guess I'll have to contact ASUS.

    1. Pretty much any SSD that is 7mm will fit into this system. Obviously the faster the Read and Write times the better. One of the more recommended ones is a Crucial M4. Make sure you get the 7mm version. I picked up the 256GB version.

    2. As for memory. Again pretty much any memory will do. However it needs to be 1600Mhz, and CL 11 and up to 8GB in size. The Vengeance card will not work. Its CL10 and will underclock the RAM to 1333Mhz.

    3. The iSSD is slower then a dedicated SSD. So while you can do it, you will take a performacne hit. Also everything I've read the iSSD is unreliable. More then a fair share of people have had it up and die on them. I don't know about you but I'm not going to trust it. There is also the fact the iSSD is only at best 32GB. If you are going to install a ton of apps you better be prepared to tweak the OS to fit in 32GB.

Display went black for me too during driver install. I just left it for 5 mins and then hit Fn+f8 (or Fn+f8 then enter) a few times and it went back on! No problems scince then.

I hope this works, and I'd love to hear someone's experience in getting USB 3.0 to work with Windows 8. Non-working USB 3.0 would be a deal-breaker to me. (and a bit stupid, too) I was going to do my upgrade tomorrow and I still may -- I've done a system backup tonight so I could restore Windows 7 if I need to... and if I have results before I read more about it I'll let people know what's going on.

    Hi,

My UX32VD's screen's contrast gets lowered when there are dark apps on the screen and I'm on battery. When my screen is stuffed with brighter colored windows etc. contrast looks fine. Is there any way I can turn this off? It's really annoying.

This is only happens when I'm on battery, when the laptop is plugged in, screen contrast stays the same, no matter what's on my screen in the moment.

Can someone help me figure ou what causing this please?

    Thank you!

Hello cocoman. Yes, I already played with this settings in the BIOS. Unfortunately that is not a solution, at least for me. It makes no difference if I set it to "Auto" or "Enable" - than USB 3.0 doesn't work stable under Windows 8. When it's set to "Disable" - I can work with that devices, but in USB 2.0 mode. What it logical too. I have latest BIOS 212 since it's release date.

I will open a ticket to ASUS, as the issue is really annoying - to have 3 x USB 3.0 ports and not to able to use it under windows 8. As mentioned already, under Windows 7 with latest Intel USB 3.0 driver there is no any issue with USB 3.0, so I assume it's software, not hardware problem.

So is the damn ux32vd being discontinued or something?!?

I order mine last week through Amazon's third party and get a notification it shipped. Sweet. Only to get a god damn e-mail this morning:

    John,

It appears that this specific zen book laptop is on back order and I sincerely apologize. I attempted several times to try to see if any of our affiliate warehouses have this but none did. Again I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

I have issued a full refund. I can also issue a $20 extra credit.

    Please let me know.

    Regards,
    J-Electronics.

I follow up asking when it might ship and get:

    Hello,

I don't have an ETA yet, I was waiting for one warehouse in New jersey, however they got hit hard with the hurricane are closed at the moment.

    Regards,
    J-Electronics.

So I go online trying to find this thing somewhere else. I have the RAM upgrade and SSD in hand right now. I see two in stock on Amazon. And I can't touch it until the damn reembursement on my new Amazon card clears. Which I'm going to assume by then they will be gone. This damn system just came out. Where the heck are they?!?

*sighs* Granted if the back order happened because of the hurricane I can at least understand that, and certainly there are bigger issues then one little laptop. but still. It says shipping and then HAHA! FOOLED YOU!!! :( I'm mostly steamed because I'm going on a business trip \ vacation in 2 weeks and really want something other then my 9lbs Alienware gaming laptop.

Here's what I find intriguing... I'm right now writing form a Dell machine which has the same Intel eXtensible Host Controller for USB 3.0. I've had Windows 8 on this machine for days now, and I have absolutely no problem with my USB 3.0 ports. Did you make sure to install the motherboard chipset drivers after installing Windows 8? Did you do a fresh install or an upgrade? I believe if you upgraded, you needed to uninstall the ones for Windows 7 first, then install the new ones provided on ASUS's site. I'm about to embark on a fresh install of Windows 8 now (I want to install in UEFI and not BIOS mode..) I'll report back after.

Although not related to my UX32VD, I just updated my Dell's BIOS and now I have USB 3.0 speeds with my 3.0 devices on windows 8. This makes me feel better, and I'd almost expect a BIOS update to be released from ASUS sometime in the near future to fix our issues. I'm going to go ahead with the ASUS Windows 8 build.

I have just completed an install of Windows 8 Professional x64 on my UX32VD-DB71. I wanted to relay my experiences to everyone since I've seen so many conflicting issues.

First, I have a UX32VD which I have upgraded to 10GB RAM with Crucial 8gb CL11 RAM and to an SSD with the Samsung 830 256GB 7mm drive.

    I'm on ASUS BIOS 212.

I jumped at the opportunity for the $15 upgrade offer from MS, but I really only wanted the product code. I used Windows 8 x64 media I downloaded from my TechNet subscription. This shouldn't make any difference, the media that downloaded with the upgrade offer should work fine, but I wanted to note this.

I did a CLEAN INSTALL -- not an upgrade. I used an USB DVD drive and I made sure to install using UEFI mode.

I had downloaded all the drivers provided by ASUS for Windows 8 x64, minus some of the silly utilities that I'll never use. Once windows had started up, I signed in and installed every one of the drivers. I made sure to install the Intel chipset drivers first, then continued with the remaining drivers.

Once all the ASUS drivers were installed, I ran windows update and installed all updates which were available for my system. Of course with all of this, I also rebooted when necessary.

Upon the final reboot with everything installed, I had no unknown devices in device manager.

To top everything off -- I plugged in a USB 3.0 hard drive and the drive was recognized as USB 3.0/SuperSpeed and I was able to verify USB 3.0 speeds using CrystalDiskMark (126/120 sequential, in this case).

Now it's time to install the things I use. All in all I feel 100% successful and I'm happy.

Please feel free to ask questions.

    Thanks for the info!
    Two questions:
    1. Do you know of a free source for installation files?
    2. What is meant by "installing using UEFI mode"?

Hello MakisupaVT, thanks for the detailed answer. I'm in the very same situation. I bouth upgrade key for 15 €, but have clean install of Windows 8 64bit from my MSDN account. It's installed in UEFI mode, clean install with only drivers + windows update, without any" ugly" (e.g. Vibe, I never need it). I also have 10 GB Ram as well Samsung 830 256GB. So we are almost the same hardware, altough in Germany Notebook is marketed as UX32VD-4002R. As I mentioned in early post - USB 3.0 is working propely by me also when I boot windows with connected device and also sometimes, when I plug-in-plug-out-plugin it multiple times, until I see it's working. It doesn't work in 85% of cases when I unplug the device and plug it again.

Would you please confirm you can unplug your USB 3.0 device, connect it to (other?) USB 3.0 port and it's also properly recognized from the first time?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. If you're talking Windows 8 installation files... they're not free. Buy them. Your machine should have a $15 upgrade which is more than affordable. If not, it's only $40 this time around. For once MS made upgrading super affordable. If your'e talking about the ASUS drivers/installers, they're here: ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD just pick Windows 8 x64.

    2. UEFI is a newer way to boot into your machine, other than BIOS that's been around forever. Windows 8 takes great advantages of this, and boots speeds are amazing (I can boot ALL the way into windows in 11 seconds from off). Info here: Unified Extensible Firmware Interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

I have not been able to install Windows via a USB using UEFI, but when I use a disc and an external DVD drive it gives me two options to boot the DVD, one will say EFI Boot: and then a normal. Choose EFI boot and windows will install in EFI mode.

Thank you for the post as I'm planning to install Win8 myself.

How do you verify a device is in USB 3.0 mode? Does Windows pop-up a notification about "Your device could run faster if..." like I've seen it do for USB 2.0 devices stuck in 1.0 mode?

    Thank you

I did some extensive testing with the one USB 3.0 device I have with me, and even threw some 2.0's in the mix for good measure. First off, I was able to unplug and plug in my 3.0 device to every single USB port multiple times while the machine was on and every single time not only did it recognize as 3.0, it did so almost immediately and was able to be accessed. I did not use the "eject hardware" feature, just pulled out the USB plug and put it back in. I verified USB 3.0 speeds -- but I also saw that it was connected as USB 3.0 in the Devices screen.

I also booted the machine with the device plugged in and on, the device was available for use as soon as I logged in. I was again able to move the device from port to port with no issues.

I am using a 500gb 7200RPM hard drive in a Oyen Digital MiniPro USB 3.0 enclosure for this testing. I can test with other USB 3.0 devices if you'd like once I get home from the office.

There is a "Devices" screen in Windows 8. You can get to it by starting to type the word "devices" in the start menu and clicking on "Settings". When a device is connected as USB 3.0, it will say "Connected to USB 3.0". If it's not working as 3.0, it will have a message near it similar to the one you get with previous versions of windows -- I can't remember the exact wording at this moment.

How good is the Asus Smart Gesture in windows 8? Can i use it to multitask (swipe in apps from the right and left) or switch between the desktop and Metro UI easily?

There's a new tab in SmartGesture that has "edge swiping". Swiping from left edge to right switches into metro apps and back to desktop. Swiping from right to left brings up the charm bar. It works as expected and will certainly make multitasking without a touchscreen manageable for full-screened Metro apps.

    EDIT

I have the latest Smart Gesture driver installed and want to disable scroll inertia. I downloaded the synaptic driver on the Asus website and it won't run. Gives me an error message that I don't have a synaptic touchpad. No link on the MFG website for the Elan driver. Went to Elan's website and it says to get it from the MFG website. Does the Elan driver allow you to disable inertia scroll? Where can I download it?

    Edit 2: Another question

I like to be able to continue downloading with the laptop closed. I set the power options to "do nothing" when the lid is closed. It is functioning properly, but it looks like for some reason my wireless connection gets throtled way down when the lid is closed. I went into hardware manager and disable the power saving ability in the device profile, but my speeds are still dropping down to almost nothing with the lid shut. Any ideas?

Short answer: Yes, since windows 8 was released it was discontinued. Now it is shipped with a different model number, even though its the same hardware, but now shipps with Windows 8. Just the final numbers in the model are different. I don´t remember the "new" model number.

I've got the same machine with the same "feature". However in my case the problem still exists when the AC is plugged in. The OS is Windows 8 x64 and all drivers are up to date.

Someone please help us in this.

    Thanks in advance!

Still looking for an answer to the above problems but I have an additional one that cropped up last night. I have a bluetooth mouse set up and also use the wireless adapter to connect to my home network. Every time I resume from sleep mode, my network adapter doesn't seem to want to connect automatically to my network. If I mess around with it for a couple of mins it will connect but having to manually do it is a pain in the butt. I have the wireless access point set up as the preferred connection. Not sure what else I need to do. Thanks

I would like to say that with my Windows 8 installation using the drivers provided by ASUS on their website and not changing any of the default sleep or power options, when I take my computer out of sleep, either of my preferred access points where I'm at often (Home or Work) are often connected by the time my computer wakes up. I do not use the Instant-On program, but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'd try to have your computer 'forget' the networks and re-set them up in case your wireless profile somehow got corrupted. If that doesn't work, it might be worth opening a case with ASUS directly. We're a community of owners here and I'll be happy to help as much as I can, but we shouldn't be depending on for absolute answers to problems with your product.
