You would have to look for a reset short point on the PCB or the like but you can't discuss specifics on this forum, it's against the rules as its bypassing system security.

Hey everyone, I've had my UX32VD for awhile now and have been trying to fix this issue forever now. When I go to wake it from sleep, it takes awhile for the screen to pop on (which isn't a huge deal, but would like to speed up) and then occasionally when I go to log on, it will freeze when I press enter after typing in my password and requires a manual reboot. This has been really bothering me since it shouldn't happen.

I also forgot to mention I have done the SSD + ram upgrades.

    Thanks!

If I have upgraded to an SSD, should I still be able to access the integrated SSD? Or was that within the old HDD?

How many hours battery life are you guys getting? I get about 4 hrs. Is that norm?

Also, has anyone here upgraded the WiFi card in this forum? I've heard that you can upgrade to the Killer Wireless N 1202 or the Intel Centrino Ultimate 6300

4 hrs sounds about right. I mean unless you are dimming the screen and doing much else also. You sound fine.

    Hi guys,

    I have been using my UX32VD for 2 weeks and I am also getting on average 4 hours of battery life. Comparing to my UL30VT which clocks about 6 hours, I was hopping the UX32VD can last a little longer. The only upgrade made was to bump up the RAM to 10GB. I have 2 questions and was hoping somebody could help answering;

    1) Has anybody upgraded their Hitachi 500GB HDD to a Samsung 840 500GB SSD (Non Pro)? If yes, how much improvement to the battery life?

    2) This is a stupid question. UX32VD battery ain't removable and when I am using it for a prolonged period, it need the charger to be plug in. Am I right that this constant charging will deteriorate the battery? Say if I were to remove the battery and then plug in with a power source when I need to use it at home, will I short circuit the laptop?

    Many thanks in advance!!

I don't own this laptop (yet - I'm seriously considering picking one up if a good sale comes along) but from my research you can get about 4-5 hours or so on mid-brightness levels and basic office work. To get more make sure to turn the 620 card off, turn your wireless and bluetooth off, and/or lower your screen brightness. Turning the 620 off you probably won't even notice unless gaming, and since the screen on this laptop is so bright, 25% brightness is more like 50% brightness on a basic laptop. Turning wireless off would suck though unless you're watching a movie or something.

As for the battery, when they say it's "unremovable", I've always assumed that that means there isn't a separate door from which to access the battery. In other words, you have to remove the entire back plate to get at the battery. It wouldn't make any sense at all to me to design a laptop that would be useless once the battery died. Maybe I'm not understanding your question though.

What I meant was to remove UX32VD battery and then power up the laptop with the ac adaptor. Is it even possible?

Anybody upgraded their hdd to Samsung 840 Non Pro 500gb SSD?

I suppose it is. There are disassembly guides out there. But as you even stated and recognize it would likely not be best to do. Here is a link to the teardown guide. Go to step 7, I would not play with that plug on a daily basis. But even if not for that I just think you are asking for trouble with very little reward.

When you are plugged in it runs off the AC. It stops charging when battery is full. Your battery is only suffering from "heat" not charge cycles. Are you going to remove and put in the refrigerator to avoid the deterioration? All Li-Ion/Li-Poly batts deteriorate and lose/reduce ability to hold charge. You can do nothing to stop this. You can do things to slow it down. But if you can do the extreme of removing, and this goes for any notebook, and say put it in the refrigerator with a 50% charge for 6 months. Then why would someone really even care as if you can go without for 6 months you don't even need a battery apparently. OK fine not six months, 6 hours? What do you think you will gain in that short time frame. Batteries wear out. Use them for your productivity and convenience. The good news is these batts are user replaceable based on the teardown guide.

So in closing I have found that there are minimal practical ways of reducing battery wear for those who actually use them. I question why anyone who doesn't really need and can store for extended time even cares that much. :)

    Good luck.

PS the question on batts is not "stupid" but I hope you now know what you suspected all along, not practical.

integrated SSD is not part of old HDD. so if you upgrade to SSD you can still access the integrated SSD.

    Hi,

I'm having trouble installing my new samsung 250GB SSD. I've been trying to clone mig HDD to the new SSD with various cloning programs, however without luck. It seems there is some kind of difficulty when cloning the ux32vd with pre installed win8.
Have any of you succeeded with this?

    Thanks a lot!

Well you would want a dedicated HDD -> SSD program for a start to ensure good alignment, but you are probably better off with a fresh install. Grab an ISO and the drivers and you are good to go.

I have the Samsung 840 [non pro] 250gb SSD. I would say that if it improved battery life, it wasn't by much. I'm also coming from a UL30, (a though) and I find the battery life a bit weak. I used to be able to squeeze 8 hours from that laptop. With this one, I can get 4.5 or so, maybe 4.75 hours if I dim the screen and don't do anything too demanding. Currentl i get about 4:15 with pretty intensive web surfing / very light photoshop / acrobat / word / excel etc. I wouldn't expect a really noticeable difference with the SSD upgrade - my guess is the physical HD idles a lot thanks to the SSD. The 10gb ram upgrade is def. useful, since Win8 ram usage hovers around 5GB for me with just the basics open.

Thanks for the reply. I guess you are right, I should just plug in and do whatever I need to without worrying too much about the battery life. Cheers.

Oh my, that's a tab disappointing. Like you, my UL30 easily survives a good 6-8 hours without plugging in which I like. Hence, it's a bit bothersome when using UX32 that I need to plug in every 4 hours or so. I was so much hopping that a SSD would have help to squeeze another hour or more battery life... sigh

    Hi Tremor,
I will upload a video to YouTube of how to upgrade the ram when I get my laptop back, you can find how to do it with other models of the ux32vd like the ux32vd-dh71, it's the same procedure and basically the same motherboard and components.
Virtually with a 64bit processor windows should be able to manage more than 100gb of ram but I don't see reason why to try to put so much RAM, with the 10gb I was able to have 10+ tabs surfing the Internet a couple of programs and a high demanding game plus who know how many background programs and I still had about 3gb available to use plus is hard to find memory sticks bigger than 8gb for a laptop and also expensive. And as somebody else said the mother board has 2gb of RAM build-in an an available slot with 2 or 4gb depending of the model you have.
This laptop comes with a 30 day zero dead pixel warranty, I personally never had that issue so I couldn't tell how common is that. The support after the sale of Asus is pathetic I've sent my laptop 2 weeks ago with RMA and they still didn't fix it, the support representatives have no information of what happens more than what the rma Web Page says which is only the arrival day to their facilities. So I can say that the warranty of the ds72 is a joke, this is noting that in the box of the laptop says 3 days turnaround to fix it under warranty.... Totally fake.
At this point I'm starting to think that is a major issue with the ds-72 maybe a problem of the motherboard or in the best of the situations a bad bios unable to control the fan (I'm saying this because I tested the "faulty" fan and it worked, it was the physical connection of the MB or the logical part of the bios that didn't work properly) a shame for such a beautiful machine. But I can not tell for sure since I haven't found any other review of the ds72 online
I have no experience with buying warranties since I always serviced my laptops myself, but if you don't have technical experience It might be a good idea to buy an extra protection. I would recommend to be very careful with upgrading or taking the laptop to a qualified technician.

    Help me please guys!

I am stuck at choos!ng between UX31A-DH71/DB71 (the same model with i7 and SSD 256Gb) and UX32VD-DH71/DS72 models (different models with 1HDD or 2SSDs).

Give me Ur comments to below mentioned information:

1 They say that UX32VD is not a unibody case and thus there is some flexible keyboard surface and bottom cap. Is that right?
    2 UX32VD thicker than UX31A
3 What are the advantages/disadvantages of this model UX32VD-DS72 to UX31VS-DH71? Can RAM and SSDs be upgraded as in UX32VD-DH71 or not? Are the SSDs by Adata in this model or also can be from SanDisk? All these crazy fan & light bleeding issue still exist?

I am not technician and I would prefer to take UX31A-DH71 and forget about all upgrading limitations in UX31A but I need the most fastest laptop (for future purposes, 3-4 years planned horizon of usage of this machine) and thus the issue with terrible SanDisk in UX31A model makes me to look for UX32VD with its upgrading options. Today I found out that there is new version of UX32VD with DS72 index exists. Stuck....

    Thanks!

You will hardly see any performance difference between the two if you upgrade the Hd in the vd. Trust me, you'll be good with it for more than a few years.

2 weeks ago I got a replacement laptop (because of a faulty lid opener) and now the new one shuts down itself at random times (usually after hours of use though). It happens even when the laptop is just left open on the table.
Yesterday I did a memory test but it didn't find any problem. Although I'm not sure it tested all 6 GB of memory... it showed only 3 point something. Which was weird too.
Can it be overheating which causes this? As far as I know these laptops don't suffer from heat issues. And I didn't feel it hot either.
Any idea what could went wrong or what to do now? Should I bring it back AGAIN? :-/

That's not right, the ssd's on the ux32vd-ds72 are msata, those are as easy to change/upgrade as the regular 2.5" and not hard to find. msata performs as good as 2.5 ssd's plus is lighter, smaller and usually uses less power and due to the raid0 characteristic on the ds72 the access times are faster than a standalone ssd. mSata should be a standard by now on ultra books

    Hi guys,

Just wondering, if I upgrade the HDD to an SSD, how do I go abouts activating the Windows 8 key? I noticed that there's no serial for windows 8 anywhere on the laptop or power brick? For the guys who have successfully upgraded their SSD, how did you go about re-installing win 8 on the new SSD?

    Cheers

Thank you for your pic of the inside of a UX32VD-DS71 and its mSATA drives. In other recent ASUS ultrabooks I've read about (such as the UX51VZ see here, especially comments: Review Asus Zenbook UX51VZ (U500VZ) Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews) it was proprietary - something about the pins/layout/plug prevented regular mSata cards from being plugged in. Can you confirm this is not the case with this one? That would be great to know.

    Thanks,
    Peter

    Other replies:

Just re-install Windows 8 from some media (external dvd, drive, etc..) after you install the SSD int he laptop, it will get the key from the BIOS (confirmed many times).

I've solved RAM problem by disabling and uninstalling everything related with ExpressCache. If you do not have 6GB RAM or more, do not use this application, says Asus, according to me. :)

I have only one problem left; how to solve Bluetooth Peripheral Device problem, that is on device manager? Only thing that doesn't have proper driver is this one. Any ideas for UX32VD? I tried Azurewave and Intel ones on Asus website but they don't work. Tried WIDCOMM and Bluesoleil. No chance. I had this problem on my 3820TG but when I installed Bluesoleil, problem was gone. But this time, it doesn't work.

Edit: Forget about UX32VD drivers. It is about Motorola Atrix. Driver issue is related with phone, not UX32VD. I uninstalled Atrix bluetooth device from PC. Connected it again via bluetooth. Voila! It works and transfers everything with no problem.

Is your card properly in the device manager? You can use a program like GPU-Z to monitor usage.

You go to the sensors tab with the 620M and it will show you if the GPU is actually being loaded, if it is then its in use.

Thanks doju for sharing your experience with Asus' warranty support. I don't think I can afford to be without my machine for that long once I've set it up and actively started using it. 2 weeks seems a long time to fix this issue. But do keep us posted on the progress, if you don't mind. Helps us make an informed decision on Asus' warranty service.

My experience with Dell (links to a post on this website) was an utter downer. They have good service, but if they can't even get their products to work right out-of-the-box, then it's not a good thing. In an ideal world a good product simply doesn't need a service... so it doesn't matter if the service is good or bad.

Does anyone here have any experience with Asus UX32VD and after-market warranties like SquareTrade or Mack? Or is Asus' own warranty a better option? Pro-star.com is providing Asus' warranty. Any feedback on how these folks are? I've heard good things here about XoticPC, but unfortunately, they're not carrying UX32VD-DS72 yet.

Oh, and one more Q... should I have the 2 SSDs configured as individual drives, or is RAID 0 a better config from performance (both battery longevity and speed) perspective? Storage space lost/gained is not important.

    Thanks,
    TC

Got my UX32VD today. Most everything seems fine, but I do have a problem with the bottom lid, which another person has mentioned before. The bottom plate is not flush with the left side of the laptop. Underneath the left usb and sd slot there is a gap between the side and where the bottom should meet with it. I can push it with my finger and it will go flush, but it won't stay there when I remove the pressure. It makes me worry about how easy water could get in there. Now I have to decide if it's worth returning over.

Take off the bottom plate and put it back on; 1) aligning it properly while you 2) make sure the screws are not tightened too hard at first. 3) When everything looks good you can tighten the screws.

Thanks, I will try that. Another out of the box problem is that the wireless display driver was not working and had a yellow exclamation mark on it in device manager. I had to download and install the driver for it to start working properly. The fan seems to stay on all the time, too.

Ok, so I got fed up with temps of 60-70c on light loads and 80-90c/unusable on mid-high loads and decided to tear it apart and see whats up inside this thingy.

This seems like an excessive amount of thermal paste, no?

Got some fresh noctua thermal paste, hopefully we can make this little beast lax a bit.

Let us know how it goes. Mine idles at 55-56. Doing nothing more than opening Chrome jumps it to 62. I had to install Notebook Fan Control because the fan would never stop otherwise.

Also, Amazon listed this notebook as having 4gb of RAM. Mine came with 6.

Cold start and idle for 10 minutes (previously 55-60)

1080p YouTube video in Chrome for 5 minutes (previously 70+)

When testing in Minecraft everything on full I had temps of 78-84

Worth mentioning I also cleaned some dust from the fans in addition to new thermal paste.

Yea, pretty happy with the ultrabook now. Remember this was a combination of cleaning dust AND changing thermal paste.

I like vegards results. But I think his picture show he was way farged. So unless you have the same issue which I don't be careful. Good luck and I wish you the best. I am lucky, so far so good?

I am sitting here with 117F playing here. 127F and when doing stuff 140F'sh. I have gamed and yea it does get high.

Not scientific but when stressing I think 146F might be normal. Like I said gaming is very different.

Edit: I dropped 111F then 109F after I posted. I really think our above poster got a bad thermal paste application.
