Interesting, never thought win 8 might bring better battery life.

Do you turn off sound explicitly somehow or just not play any sounds?

    Hi all,

I picked up a UX32VD a few days ago. Really like the laptop so far, great screen, of course, no issues with touchpad, light bleeding either. However, despite my best efforts my WEI for desktop graphics performance looks much lower than the others posted here. I've turned up all the performance settings like the global Nvidia card selection etc. It's not that I care about the score, but the lower number makes me thing I forgot to install something maybe? Or is it that people are reporting Windows 7 scores which are different (?).

I'm running a fresh install of Windows 8 x64, have 10gb ram and a Samsung 840 SSD. I can't believe they ship this thing with a standard hard drive - it felt really slow with that.

I don't have Power4Gear installed, but I do have the latest Intel and Nvidia drivers and all the appropriate drivers (I think) from Asus.

My WEI scores look like this:
    Processor: 7.1
    RAM: 7.4
    Graphics: 4.9
    Gaming Graphics: 6.4
    Primary HD: 8.1

My other issue is battery life - how much do you guys throttle the maximum CPU speed in power settings if you want to get 6 hours from the battery while doing light surfing? Mine is minimum 5% maximum 100% and I get maybe 4.5 hours - it'd be nice to get a bit more.

For anyone who is thinking of getting this laptop I would say it's perfect with the exception of the keyboard. I type a lot, coding, papers, editing etc. and I would definitely say that even my last Asus (UL30A) had a better keyboard. You definitely get used to it, but there's something about this keyboard that makes me make more typos. That said despite typing being the primary thing I do on this machine it's worth the trade off for the speed, fantastic screen and raw power/size ratio.

    Hi all!

I just bough my ux32vd a few hours ago and I think I run into a simple but strange and annoying issue:
If I close the lid of the laptop and turn it into a vertical position - like the way I would normally hold it to carry around -, the magnet (if there's one) just won't hold it strong enough and it opens up for an inch or so (even when the opening is facing downwards).
In one case this lit up the keyboards. Is this common with these laptops? Do yours open up when you hold them vertically? Could you please try it out if you haven't already?

If it's not happening with yours, do you think I should bring it back?

I think it's because you're pressing up on the hinge on the bottom. Try also clasping it?

I would suggest you take it back - mine is very tight and wouldn't flop open at all whether i grasp by hinge or oherwise.

Is not only Win8 bringing better battery .. the fact is that the win8 Asus apps pre-configured power management is better than the win7 Asus apps power management Apps (in my oppinion).

When I said that I turn off sound and brightness, I mean I reduced all the brightness and volume piratically to 0.

Return it to the shop and get a new one..

Thanks guys! I brought it back this morning. Though they couldn't give me a replacement right away... They said they have to validate the fault with Asus first. So fingers crossed, hopefully I'll get a replacement in a few days.

You need to learn to view W8 as a dual OS. The "modern" or "metro" or tablet UI takes some getting used to and can largely be ignored in desktop mode. There are a few small annoyances which are really overcome by visiting sites like "how-to-geek" but truly they are trivial. The desktop UI is like W7 done right - it's faster, more stable, more device compatible and frankly, what W7 should have been. Clearly MS's best OS since XP. Unfortunately, everyone gets fixated on the modern UI and misses the key point.

Well it's been ok since I learned the keyboard short cuts but this should be a friendly environment out of the box, tweaking is fine but it should not be required.

Ever since I got my win8 ux32vd in October, I've never gotten more than 2.5 hours of battery life, no matter the brightness or power saving levels. All I'm doing most of the time is browsing the web, no video, on wifi. This isn't normal, is it?

It should be at least 5,5 hours .. check Bluetooth (if it is on) and power management (it must be set to save battery and not high performance .. ) If you staying with your ux32vd on your lap, you my get it "hot" (due crap ventilation, because is not on a flat surface) .. so ventilation (fans) must be on all the time (it also consume a lot of battery)..

    BEST Elantech touchpad drivers
    Hi,
I recently did a clean install of windows 8 on the laptop. I found the best driver for the trackpad. It is newer than the one linked at Asus support webpage and doesn't require any additional software such as asus smart gesture. With this driver, the performance is very close to apple trackpad (smooth, gestures are well recognized) and with little regedit tweak, one can adjust a boatload of additional settings in the driver utility.

Here is the link for the newest available driver: ELANTECH Drivers

And here is a guide for regedit tweaking: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...er-functions-elan-touchpads-zenbooks-etc.html

When I got the laptop, the touchpad was driving me crazy and I was afraid that the problems were caused by crappy hardware. Luckily, it's all software and the drivers are continuously improving!

Hi guys, i hope you can help me.

I bought an ux32vd that came with windows 8, but i didn't like the OS so i did a fresh instal of windows 7.
The problem is that the boot times are very slow, it takes about 30-35 seconds since i press the power button until i can do something on the desktop. (no programs installed yet)
I've noticed that there is a long black screen between the "starting windows" screen and the "login" screen (loading vga driver?. i can see the mouse pointer loading while this black screen).
This black screen is what really slows the boot process, because it takes about 10 seconds loading before you can go to the login screen.

Any idea of what could i do fix this "transition" black screen problem?

    for information:
    - I did the fresh install under BIOS mode (not UEFI), on the original HDD.
    - I haven't restored the express cache nor the hibernation partition yet. (Maybe that would improve boot time, but the actual boot time is much slower than it is in my other computer, which doesnt have an ssd cache).

Plase, could anyone tell me how are your boot times, from when you power up until your are in desktop, so i can compare and be ok when i get a reasonable boo time.

Thenk you very much, and sorry for my english.

Don't have original hard drive on my unit, but my UX32VD with 10GB RAM, Crucal 128GB M4 SSD with Windows 7 UEFI took 20 seconds from press power button to desktop but that's of course with many programs already installed.

I think you should install Express cache and compare the boot time.

I am in the 25/30 second club. I read about others with much faster start up times. I have not worked to reduce yet. I have removed the Express cache app because I have a SSD. As Gen mentioned I also do have things load at start up. I guess I am no expert on fast start but your start is not all that odd.

I do look forward to others input as I might try any suggestion.

It helps if you get a bios that lets you stop certain splash screens and the UEFI booting speeds things up.

    Hi @exaiphnes, @Piratal2 & @ASUS-UX32VD,
One of the reasons you guys having boot time soo long may be:
    a) Express Cache is not installed or set correctly (it uses iSSD for fast boot, even if you have an SSD instead of the OEM HDD Hitachi);
    b) Your internal SSD (iSSD) is dead, every boot the computer try for at least 30 seconds to identify the iSSD, than it switch to the 2nd hard Drive (you can check it at the BIOS).
    Cheers,
    Fábio

P.S. There is a lot of user complaining of iSSD issues, you can see the thread here:

Alright I am ready to play with tweaking start up time.

Express cache states that it works with the combination of SSD+HDD. It intelligently "caches" to the SSD to increase start up times. Am I correct?

Because I have no HDD how would it help? I cannot see that specifically expressed in the OEM info. I do have my 830 set as the boot drive.

So would I benefit or not? I can't see how I could because all express cache does is "cache" so the data needed is likely on the SSD. I have all the Data on my 830 so I am above the 80%/99% "hit" rate Express cache even hopes to achieve. Furthermore more my 100% hit rate is on a SSD that is faster than the "cache" disk I might set it up on. How would I possibly get any improvement.

Unless it can be explained to me in terms that are better than marketing mumbo-jumbo I am currently at a loss to see how it could possibly improve start up. Remember location and fragmentation are of no concern regarding SSD's. So smaller SSD and proximity should not matter. And back to my 830 is faster.

Diskeeper has been dubious with such things as SSD defragmentation. They really just do things Windows 7 and the SSD Firmware already do. But sure for a few dollars they will sell you a fancy GUI make you feel good.

All that said if I am wrong teach me why and what I should do?

    Hi all,

I recently purchased my UX32VD, runs Windows 7. I have it set to go into sleep mode when I close the lid, however it doesn't. When I have the lid closed for a while and I re-open it, my screen rotates 90 degrees clockwise, most of the programs on desktop and system tray open by themselves and desktop icons change in size. And sometimes when I open it after sleep it starts up but the screen remains blank. It runs perfectly if I remember to hit the power button before closing the lid, but I'd like to be able to just shut the lid and it go to sleep without it glitching. Has anyone else had this problem/have any recommendations?

    Thanks :)

I install ExpressCache just to test with my Crucial M4:

    Boot time:

    with Expresscache: 24.17

    without Expresscache: 25.94

It did help boot time a little bit just like fabiodt said.

I have a problem. I recently bought a brand new R3001V and its HDD (Hitachi) seems to be working constantly. It's buzzing and this noise is getting extremely annoying, as the time passes. I've removed Norton IS 2013, turned off pagefile and indexing. It's same as before. Sometimes HDD icon is not bleeping but buzzing keeps on. I ran an error test with HD Tune, no errors found.

I bought the ux32vd-ds72 online, this must be the best zeenbook so far with the new dual ssd's the boot time is 7 seconds with reading speeds higher than 680mb/s; this model uses 2 msata ssd in raid 0 placed in an raid controller that goes in the same place than previous models had the hhd, I also upgraded the ram to 10gb and repasted with IC diamond.
the trackpad problems i had with the ux32vd-dh71 are fixed and I found there is less light bleeding on the screen, Everything is great but I found that the gpu fan does not work, tried upgrading to the last bios firmware and testing the fan itself, the fan itself worked fine so my guess is a problem in the motherboard or something wrong in the bios firmware. I called asus and got an RMA to send it for fixing, Ill update after i get the laptop back

    dual ssds2.jpg
pictured the ssd's sandisk x100, on the bottom the gpu fan that was not working and on the right the slot for expand the ram, it worked in dual channel too

That can't be a standard port if it's getting 680MB/sec as a SATA III port, no matter how many HDDs are connected to it is limited to about 550-600MB/sec

You right click on the program you want to set to the Nvidia card and there is a menu item that allows you to select the Nvidia for that program. Sometimes you need to find the *.exe for the program and change the settings for it.

    Hi

I am on UX32VD with a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro. I should have installed all drivers however there is one behavior I want to get rid of.

The problem is that when I boot up, there is a default setting in regard to turn on backlight keyboards and Power settings being on Power Saving feature. I want to get rid of this behaviour and have it remember the last used settings!

    That should be possible

Please let me know of any solution

You have to do each program on its own. I don't think there is a global setting to default all programs to the Nvidia - or if there is I don't know it.
As to WEI there is a way but I don't recall how it is done. It is in this thread somewhere.

There is no settings in BIOS that will setup Backlight on the keyboard and I dont believe that BIOS is related to policies in the Power Settings applications I've mentioned.

The application I am using is POWER4GEAR Hybrid, bascially the same as default power settings on windows OS. It has 2 power settings either Power Saving or High Performance. I want it to remember last used settings.

EIther way your answer seems rather redundant and slight arrogant. However since you proposed looking up in BIOS, I might have missed something and I will apologies for my use of word. If not...keep your ... for youselves.

There is 2 behaviours I want to turn change:

    1. Either turn off backlight on keyboard on startup or remember last used settings. (manually turn it off is not a solution for me)
    2. Having POWER4GEAR Hybrid remember last used setting.

Well you are correct, it was rather arrogant of me. I made a mistake as I was skimming and the captured "Quote" above yours had the getting into BIOS issue. I apologize for my clear lack of diligence.

On the subject of your real issues. If you use Power4Gear it has 4 profiles. But forget that, where it says advanced in the lower right. You click and the window expands. Click it again and a window shows up that lets you set so much. Like CPU/TDP and much more. I am not sure if this would solve your current issue but fun to play with.

Try that for fun and I will have a look later for the dimmed backlight if that does not work.

    Good luck.

Please do keep us updated on this - I would like to repaste, but I'm 99% sure it would void the ASUS Warranty to do so.

    My post:

I got my UX32VD from Costco Canada online on about March 27. It's not perfect, but I have to admit - I just really, really, really enjoy using it :).

I was using it the other day on the train and I just realized, even working in that cramped space with no mouse - so fast, so light, so powerful - it's just plain fun on this thing - I quite like it :).

My regular usage scenario is RDPing into my work computer and programming, either when I'm in our sattelite office or on the train or at home. I use an external monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard when I game (which isn't much, this plays SWTOR quite fine and I'll probably try Skyrim on it sometime soon), but the rest of the time I mostly use the system itself. It does everything I've asked - I'm considering asking my work to buy this one and let someone else take my desktop and do everything on this directly - three 1080p monitors on desk at once could defintiely come in handy :). Just need a DVI to HDMI adapter and I can make it happen :).

I didn't realize this version comes with 6GB of RAM, I'll probably upgrade to 10GB eventually, but I'll hold off for now (maybe I'll put a 16GB stick in there someday). It's not dual channel from day one, but with the Intel virtialization I find it plenty fast enough.

I installed my V200+ Kingston SSD and get boot times of about 8 seconds to a usable state on Windows 8. Also have the Fan controlled which is great - the system runs nice and silent 90% of the time in my usage.

Now I'm not sure what to do with my N56VZ - maybe I will sell it - I just plain enjoy using this one so much I don't really need that one anymore (true it's a GT650 vs GT620 but now that I've tried a 13.3" ultrabook, except leaving the 15" multimedia notebook at my desk, I never really use it anymore). It's a nice problem to have :).

Unless they come out with a new model with a newer GPU (and the 620 in this guy is already overclocked plenty by default :)) I think I'll keep it - still have 70 days to see - Haswell and it's longer battery life is nice, but who knows if they'll have such a nice notebook as this - maybe the gen after that will have Integrated Graphics that beats this 620 in such a nice light high quality frame and with such a beautiful display (hardly any backlight bleed on mine and the lack of glare is gorgeous when working in a train next to the window at sunset). I like it - I really do :). Thanks all who gave me feedback in the past, and hope to discuss this some more.

    Thank you

The backlight is fixed. In windows 8 there is no indication when you turn on/off the ambient light sensor. I thought I had it turned off when I last time pressed it down. The layout in Power4Gear in win8 does not have the same layout and only comes with 2 settings, either Power Saving or High Performance feature.

Did not see your suggestion but you are right..I tried rechecking ambient sensor and it WAS on. THe problem was that in win8 the app wouldnt indicate any changes made, I assumed that it was turned OFF when I pressed down the button. Either it did not register my keypress or it was already turned off to begin with...headache...

last problem that remains is the behaviour of the POWER4GEAR Hybrid.

Many users have asked this same question on this thread already but I did not see a solution yet. So does anyone know why Windows Experience Index desktop graphics score drops from 5.5 to 4.5 after updating RAM and SSD and installing clean Windows 8?

I already tried to change preferred graphics processor on NVIDIA Control Panel to high performance NVIDIA processor but it didn't help. And I have latest HD4000 and NVIDIA drivers installed.

edit: My 3DMark11 results, these look quite normal? http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/6410968

I don't have a use for the default D drive. That's a good 258 gigs I could use elsewhere. Can I delete it to make more space for C? How would I go about this without something catastrophic happening? win8.

    I have a UX32VD (with Samsung 830 and Corsair 8GB DDR3 1333 MHz)

When I put it down on my desk and I bump it a bit in the process I get this BSOD:

Like, it's not that I'm throwing in down on the desk, it's just a slight bump and I feel I can't put it down normally without the risk of getting this BSOD.

    What could be the problem?

That's wonderful doju! Could you please share more pics.. I really want to see how the RAM is upgradable. XoticPC website still doesn't say that it is. They've, however, updated the section about how the SSDs can be configured. Is 10GB the max RAM you can install? How much is soldered to the motherboard -- 2GB or all 4GB?

How does the screen fare for dead pixels? I recently had a very bad experience with XPS 13 FHD (see my views on that in this forum for XPS 13). I'm willing to try DS72, but ASUS' tech non-support scares me. I'm thinking of buying it on Amazon and adding Square Trade's warranty to it. Is that warranty genuine? It has way too many positive reviews to sound true. Or should I take my chance with ASUS' 3yr worldwide warranty?

    Thanks,
    TC

there are 2GB soldered and 2GB on the removable stick so total RAM supported is 10GB. the SATA bay is 7mm size so it can be upgrade to any 2.5" 7mm thick SSD or hard drives:

    Hi Guys!

Just purchased my UX32VD 2 days ago. Been using it and it has been awesome (albeit slow). Needs an SSD and RAM upgrade ASAP.

I noticed that the Centrino Wireless 6235 Card has many issues with WiFi. Been doing some reading over the internet and apparently it's a driver issue that has been ongoing with this card for over a year! I have issues with my WiFi at home, with connections dropping quite often when I have weaker signal strengths (2-3 bars). My 5 year old Dell M1330 didn't have any issues!

Anyone else experience this? Are there any tips to resolving this? I have seen other guys replacing their WiFi card entirely with a Killer 1202 Card.

    Cheers.

Perhaps there is some kind of short between the Ram and case or the drive and case because you replaced them but did not insulate them? That's the first thing that occurred to me, asking in case it could apply.

I disabled the N on my card and I think it helped. I'm also going to change the router settings at work from WPA-AES to WPA2-AES and that should help too (WPA should be TKIP). I'd rather there was an actual fix though - most of the time my N10J has better reception and it's a mini laptop from 2008...

Windows 7 and 8 cache files for quick access but mark the memory data as dumpable if required by an application.
