Yep I'm talking it back to the local store where I bought it since I have a 7 day warranty.

But I think I just did something stupid I installed Windows to the issd to check if the HDD would stop with the clicking.

I did a recovery image of the original system with clonezilla but now that I'm recovering it says something is wrong with the gpt table/partition and can't boot nor windows nor recovery with F9.

    What can I do?

I have a friend with the ux32vd who is still with oem, can it help or something?

    Thanks

Sadly this appears to be a natural defect of the HT Drives enclosed in the ASUS Zenbook Case. The sound is of the Drive constantly parking itself, amplified by the lack of insulation in the asus case. The Drives also lacks "Automatic acoustic management" which would allow the drive to run quieter. To solve the issues I simply upgraded to an SSD drive.

The easiest and fastest remedy I can think of is asking your friend to make recovery images with ASUS AI Recovery utility which can be found on stock Zenbook and then use these images to recover your device.

However I would recommend you to restore from your original recovery partition first.

Was your laptop shipped with win 8 pre installed? Unfortunately there's no Asus AI Recovery for win 8. If your friend has the same OS as you, you could clone his HDD with EaseUS or similar to restore yours.

I really should upgrade this badboy to SSD. I am waiting on a good deal for 512GB for less than 300. Seems like prices are going down.

Is there any way to reverse the FN-key? I want it to work like on my old Dell computer. If i for example wan't to change the volume I just have to press f12, not fn+f12.

Hi all, got my UX32A before Christmas and have a nagging problem with it. Every 4th or 5th time I power it on, it goes from the starting windows screen to blank black screen. Backlight is on, but nothing on the screen. To get it out of this, I use Fn + F1 to put it in sleep, then I power on, and it shows the Windows login screen right away.
Same thing every 4th or 5th time it comes back from having display off. I move the mouse and it goes to this blank black screen, with the same fix working.
It's starting to get annoying now-anyone else have this problem?

I just checked the GPUz on my recently bought UX32VD-DH71 and it lists the GF117 as a 40nm, 64-bit chip. Is it alright or I got a bad unit? I know there are also 28nm, and 128-bit version of this chip (dunno if they're used on other UX32VDs though).

It supports it, but I can't get it working. Anyone having problems with it? Depending on which version of the wifi driver and Widi I install, I get diferent issues connecting to a Widi adapter. It looks like it is connecting , then says the connection failed.

I have it working but it wasn't perfect. I have had to install the drivers a couple of times. I have also had to restart the adapter on occasion. I am using D-Link adapter hooked to my tv via HDMI.

I have joined the club a few days ago with a UX32VD-DH71. I have to day I have had mixed feelings about it. But after being able to get rid of some of the bloatware and disabling some programs from running at startup, I am feeling better now, particularly because I have been able to extract the Windows 8 product key and, have finally got a hold of a Windows 8 X64 installation iso (many thanks to the earlier posts here that showed where to look for it).

I am still not sure if I did the right move departing from my trusty 3yrs old MBP for the Asus. I hope it proves positive.

Then, I have just ordered a Crucial 8GB DDR3-1600 CL11 ram module and a Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB SSD to replace the HDD. I was able to get some deals on both with $50 off regular price of the SSD drive so decided to go for the best even though I could still have other SSD's for $50 or so less than the Samsung Pro.
I don't know if the sata controller in the laptop can take advantage of the Samsung 840 Pro super fast I/O. Does anyone know if it is SATA II or, SATA III?

Next, has anyone tried doing a fresh installation of Windows 8 in secure UEFI mode? Is there going to be a problem? My laptop has come with BIOS 212. I received the new SSD today.

Last, with the addition of the SSD, I no longer want to use the iSSD for caching since I hear it is not that fast.Which utilities/applications are responsible for the caching on the iSSD drive? Is it only Expresscache? How about the Intel Rapid Start Technology utility? Knowing this will help me not installing anything that is not being used or useful for the system.

    Thanks.

    It's SATA III.
I did a fresh install of win8 from a usb stick with no problems. If you are planning to upgrade the BIOS to 213 it might be a good idea to do it before the HDD/SSD swap. I had to return my ux32vd because it wouldn't boot from internal disc after swapping the HDD with a 256GB 840 PRO and upgrading BIOS to 213. Others have had the same or similar problems.
As for the iSSD i believe it is only the express cache that controls the buffering, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I will probably just skip the 213 version since from what I read on Asus website, it doesn't seem being a significant update.

I am tempted to install Windows 8 in UEFI mode. I know it can be a challenge (from what I have read around) but, I would like to learn how it is possible. At worst, I erase the drive and start from the beginning.

I have done a clean install of Windows 8 on an Intel SSD in UEFI mode from a USB drive.

Check out this link for a walk through: Make a UEFI Bootable USB Drive for Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012ServeTheHome – Server and Workstation Reviews

Basically your formatting the USB drive to make it bootable and then copying the Windows 8 installation files to the USB drive.

I had also updated to BIOS 213 while I was already on Windows 8 and an Intel SSD without issues.

You can also UEFI boot a DVD-R too, it just needs to not be from the upgrade assistant (or be apply the fix to the ISO you get from that).

It doesn't -- just swap all the components you've installed with stock ones when you need RMA.

Wish I read this thread before returning a couple of ux32vd's...lol.

I have a quick question. For now I'm retaining the 500GB hard drive and want to use the iSSD for the cache purposes until I upgrade the hard drive. Now in disk management it shows the iSSD in two partitions from the factory. Why did ASUS do that? And how change it into 1 partition for cache purpose?

    Thanks for any help!

I followed the instruction in the link and extracted and copied the files from Windows 8 iso into it. I then booted the laptop from the USB flash disk. However once the installation starts, it complains a driver is missing. I am guessing the missing driver is for USB 3.0 (even though my flash disk is only USB 2.0). Did you also encounter this problem? If so, what was your solution?

post edit: I found the solution somewhere online. When the error message happened, I removed the USB flash disk and clicked cancel and click close windows to go back to the main installation page. Then I plugged in the USB flash disk into another USB port and voila, it started the installation without the error message. A weird bug. ;)

Now I have to decide which drivers/software/utilities are needed. I want to stay minimalist.

Yeah I did not encounter that issue, it may be that the USB port that you tried is on a different controller, most likely not the Intel one.

I would install the drivers in this order:

    1. NVIDIA display drivers
    2. Intel Display Drivers
    3. Intel Chipset
    4. Asus ATKACPI
    5. Touch Pad

    Then all other drivers.

I just bought a UX32VD-R4013H couple of days ago in Hong Kong - i7, 500GB HDD, 24GB SSD, 6GB (2+4) RAM and Win8 Home Premium with lots of Asus bloatware. Though stated in the accompanied manual, but I could not find the AI Recovery program to create the recovery DVD. I want to replace the HDD with a Samsung 830 256GB SSD, and need the recovery DVD to make it work again with enhanced speed, any help will be much appreciated.

Do you know if AI recovery can create partitions and file systems on a brand new drive? I used Windows 8 'recovery drive' and it couldn't. So I could not use it to instal things on the new drive. You most likely need a third party clone system. I ended up a fresh install of Windows 8.

I first tried all USB ports and none worked. The problem was I was restarting the system in between. Obviously it wasn't about any specific USB port.

Personally I would keep Windows 8 and just use one of the third party applications to bring back the Win7 start menu, if it is the metro UI that turns you off.

Otherwise you can install Windows 7 without an issue, when I originally purchased the Asus UX32VD it had Windows 7 and I was able to do a clean install on the Intel SSD with UEFI without issues.

All the drivers for Windows 7 are on Asus's website.

I just hear bad stuff about win8.

Should I install the OS to the new ssd or to the internal SSD?

I am going to dual boot to ubuntu too, should I just throw ubuntu on the issd?

Don't know what bad stuff you are hearing about W8 but I'd offer it as a huge improvement to W7, on the same scale as W7 was over Vista. The modern ui takes some getting used to but you can largely ignore it if you want. It's even reasonably easy to live without the start button, though 4.99 to Stardock gets it back.

Yeah, I myself have not had any issues with Windows 8.

Dual booting Ubuntu will work, but support for the function keys is very lacking. You cannot use the brightness keys without a newer kernel then what ubuntu 12.10 even has. Also Ubuntu will not recognize that Windows 7/8 is installed. Also the NVIDIA/Intel graphics switching does not work automatically.

I also wanted to dual boot, but I may wait until Ubuntu 13.04 comes out with a much newer kernel.

At the end I just install a new copy of Win7 in my SSD, fantastic speed.

I will keep the 500GB drive as spare until I can afford a 7200rpm SATA III Hitachi 7mm 500 GB HDD. That might increase speed somewhat.

New configuration - Just to report that the model I bought lat week in Hong Kong is UX32VD-R4013H with i7, 6GB RAM, 24GB iSSD, 500GB HDD, Windows 8.

However, AI Recovery is no more present, instead there is an option to create a "Recovery Drive", which copy some utilities and the recovery partition to an external drive (either an SD card in a card reader or an external HDD, I tried both).

I then replaced the 5400rpm 500GB HDD with a empty 7200rpm SATA III 500GB (also Hitachi), connect the Recovery Drive (external HDD) and boot up with Fn9 key, the recovery drive could boot but failed to recover the system but says a partition is missing from the internal HDD.

Anyone who has successfully recovered (on another HDD) with the recovery drive please lend a hand. Thanks.

As far as I know, you cannot use recovery drive to install the system on a brand new drive since it does not have the ability to partition and format the new drive which must be done exactly like the original drive in order to proceed with installation. When you create the recovery disk, it can only recover to the same drive because it already has the same partition table that the recovery system needs.

One thing you can try check the partition table on the the old drive. Write down the details of each partition. Then use a utility to create partitions on the new drive and try to make them exactly like the ones on the old drive. If the old drive has a GPT table, the new one should also has a GPT table. Then see if you can then use the recovery drive to install you system on the new drive. It might work (I haven't tried it myself).

Otherwise, from what I have read, third party cloning programs can clone your system entirely to a new bare drive. That should be what you need.

Myself, preferred doing a clean install and I am happy with the result.

I just bought a UX32VD recently and noticed today that light pinching pressure near the left USB port results in a clicking noise. Upon further inspection, it appears the bottom of the case does not meet flush with the edge. There is some give. This is also true on the other side of the case near the USB ports (except that side does not click). I've attached an image which should clear up the location to which I am referring.
Have any of you experienced anything similiar?

I just tried it and didn't hear anything. Why don't you open the bottom panel to see what makes the sound? That section is clearly visible when you open the laptop. Maybe just one screw is loose.

I have the same e problem. The bottom plate does not really meet the side panel. So when on applies pressure the bottom plate makes a click sound when it is pushed down inside if the side plate.

I picked my ux32vd up about a month ago from JR.com It said it was brown, but just the sleeve for it was. I haven't used it alot as im getting ready to move the data from my old laptop to this and wanted to go ssd before doing all that work. So ive just been doing light browsing and some light gaming, via steam. Today it started doing the same boot issue as this guys: ASUS ZENBOOK UX21E-KX008V start-up problem / issue - YouTube thats not my vid, but same issue. I dont have the charger with me so im hoping later at home I can boot it and check the bios, see if I have an older ver, assumed I had most current. My stock config is: i7, 6GB RAM, 24GB iSSD, 500GB HDD, Windows 8.

So i just installed afresh new windows 7

im assuuming I have to manually download every single driver from asus for all to work?

i just got wifi driver to work

now when i close my screen and open it it shuts down windows?

also all my hotkeys don't work like brightness and audio + multi gestures don't work on touchpad

    should I update bios?

    Edit: hotkeys are working now.
But when I "turn off all wireless" using the hotkey my wifi doesn't turn off or on. I have to manually do it.

Also when opening the laptop shoudln't it turn the screen on? I have to click the little 'power' button to have it turn back on

    Hi,

For hot keys to work you have to install the atk driver, that is esencial.

For wireless switching you need also the "wireless console 3" package installed

And for the screen and sleep settings to work I think power4gear is needed.

Here is a list of the drivers and the order I install them on fresh install.

    Hope it helps

I have the windows 7 recovery, but it is the blueray version which is 18GB.

I used that one because I unzipped it to a external HDD and booted from there.

Mine works the same way. Not sure it can be adjusted. I haven't looked as I prefer it that way.

Does anyone here have Borderlands 2? I have been having a problem with the game. I used to be able to select 720p as a resolution and now I am having problems selecting many available resolutions. Could you please let me know:

    1. What nvidia driver you have running
    2. what hd4000 driver you have
    3. Can you select 720p (you need to go back into the resolution setting to make sure the setting "sticks" after selecting it
    4. If you have fraps, what is you FPS at all settings on default and 720p

I have been posting my probs on the BL2 forum, but I am beginning to think the problem is on my end.

I would REALLY appreciate it if someone could check this for me.

It's not that complicated guys: do a clean Windows installation and then, install the drivers (in the order mandaman2k showed). Once you are done, create a system image and store it on an external hard drive or flash disk or burn it to DVD's (I couldn't do the latter though; perhaps my USB DVD drive was incompatible with Windows 8). I actually have the image on the iSSD drive since I no longer use it for caching (no need since I have replaced the HDD with an SSD)and i have no other use for it. You also need to create a bootable repair disk (a 4-8GB USB flash disk can be had for a dime on Ebay). So next time, if you happen to need to do reset the system, you just boot off the repair disk and then use the stored restore image to reset your system.
