The cycling of the fan on and off is how the laptop is responding to heat/load. I can hear mine go on and off but it is very quiet when running I need to put my ear within a couple inches of the laptop to actually hear it running when I am browsing the net or not doing anything intensive.

There must be something wrong with the fan on yours then, if you can hear it cycling on/off that loudly, because for me and my hearing is perfectly fine it is barely noticeable.

Yea why is everyone freaking out over the fan coming on and off that's what it's supposed to do. As long as it's not doing it every 10 seconds it should be normal. The fans powering on full speed randomly at idle would be strange.

That exactly the problem. It starts and stops about every 10 seconds.

Yeah every 10 seconds is not correct, I find mine usually will stay on very low and then off and on every couple of minutes.

Had a strange situation yesterday with system refresh. I know it only keeps the "apps" but it pretty much crapped out my UX. Only three apps on the start screen, (desktop, Store, Explorer) Slow as hell and no access to c drive, no access to system progs (restore etc)

Had to do a reset to get it working.

how much should the temperature of the gefore 620 be when it isnt running anything, i mean being on desktop it should be basically switched off and the intel hd4000 (or how its called) is taking over. for me its around 50°C all the time with 0 load. using the msi combustor to read it out.

finally found out how to disable this. You have to disable the laptop's sensor. Here's a tutorial on the subject. WOW my screen is finally as bright as it flipping should be!

Yes, many ASUS UX32VDS are being plagued with fan issues. The fan is going on and off every 10 seconds, even under minimal CPU loads. Clearly there is an issue with the FAN parameters in the BIOS. The fan is coming on too often and should be set so that it cools the ultrabook enough so that it does not come on again in only 10 seconds.

I received a Zenbook Prime ux32vd on Monday. I cleared both drives, erased Windows 8 and successfully installed Windows 7 on the 24GB iSSD. I was able to get all the drivers installed and working perfectly.

Lastly I flashed the bios to 213 using Windows Flash utility downloaded from the Asus website. Everything went fine according to the flash utility. After rebooting it went straight into the bios. There are no boot options listed. Under advanced/SATA both drives are listed there. I've tried holding down escape and no boot drives are listed. I tried to use the USB stick with Windows 7 on it and it showed up as (GEUI: PNY 8.0GB....), when I chose to boot from it, it when straight to the bios again. It doesn't even show the ASUS screen it just goes straight to the bios.

I've tried to roll back the bios to a previous version using the flash utility in the bios but it says they are too old.

Previously the drives were both set to MBR I believe, but was booting to the iSSD. I am sure the drives are working as they are listed in the bios/SATA section. How can I get this ultrabook to boot to the iSSD again?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I do now know if this will help you but I had the same issue as you did except I replaced the factory Hitachi HDD with an Intel SSD and installed Win 7 on it. After updating the BIOs to version 213, I had the same issue as you did with the BIOs unable to boot up from the Intel SSD.

I had to swap back the original Hitatchi HDD and use WinFlash with the /nodate option (via command prompt) to flash backdated BIOs to see if I can recover access to the SSD. I tried BIOs version 211 but it seems to give the same outcome. Only version 205 (Update 2012.06.15) recovered SSD access.

I forgot if my UX32VD came with BIOs version 206 because I failed to check it before I flashed my BIOs (I trusted ASUS to be kind enough to provide problem free BIOs updates - *faint*) but so far it seems like the only one that works. It would be great if anyone can give a solution for BIOs version 213 upgrading without losing SSD access.

Do a search or scroll back through the thread as this has been discussed . As I recall the fix was to enable CSM and disable Secure Boot in the bios. This seems to happen to people who have upgraded to an SSD. In your case it may be switching the OS to the SSD may have caused a problem.

Thanks for the research! I disabled secure boot and enabled CSM and it booted to Windows 7. However mid-boot it reaches a point and gets BSD and auto-reboots.

I'll go back and research some more posts.

    Thanks for your help.

upgraded ux32vd to samsung 840 ssd. all works fine. but i was curious to know and the 24gb issd is of any use now? after upgrade i have not done anything to it/cannot see it as a drive in my computer (does appear in bios).

how can i use it for storage now/is it possible to use for faster bootups? i guess the samsung ssd should be enough. im just a bit confused on how to gain access to it and what I should do with it....

You can use it for storage or I have used it for installing a Linux Distro in the past.

    To initialize the issd:

    1. Right click on "Computer" in the start menu
    2. Click on Manage
    3. Go to Disk Management
    4. Right click on the issd (Should be disk 1) and say create New Simple Volume.

I only have the option to "Convert to Dynamic Disk". I guess it is this one?

It says Disk 1: 4.00GB Healthy OEM Partition and then 18.36 Healthy Primary Partition- 100% Free.

Similarly, is there a way to go back to using the iSSD for bootup purposes? If so how would this compare to Samsung SSD....

So ive decided to upgrade to 10GB ram and an SSD. Since the Samsung 830 have been discontinued i cant get a hold of it here in sweden and im going with the 840 (not the pro-version). The ram i will use is this: KINGSTON 8GB SO-DIMM 1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 - KVR16S11/8. Is this a good setup? I was thinking that the extra money for the pro version was not worth it, so therefore im going with the basic version of 840.

Im jumping on the microsoft windows 8 upgrade offer for 15$ but how can i use this to to a fresh install since its just an upgrade? I was thinking using the recovery-program-thing that came with the laptop and use this to restore windows 7 to my new SSD and then use the Windows 8 upgrade, does this give mee any dissadvantages or is there a better way to make us of the upgrade offer?

I used the upgrade and just used the keep nothing option. I think that is the equivalent to the fresh install. I also think there are ways to install the upgrade on a bare drive and activate later. You can Google that. For sure using the upgrade and keep nothing option works.

If you reinstalled Windows 7 on the Samsung SSD then you can delete both of those partitions under disk 1 and create one single partition. The size of the two partitions on your issd does equal what I have in my UX32VD.

I would use the Samsung SSD for boot-up, as generally it will be considerably faster.

hey guys, i have a problem with my ux32vd. it wont recognize my 32gb usb 3.0 pen drive. whenever i connected it im getting a message from windows that its not working properly and that i shall reconnected it and if it is not working then it may be due to my pen drive not function which it does! i tested it on another laptop... also the usb on my asus is working with usb 2.0 devices. is that a common issue?

    Hey All,

Quick questions.. Just bought the UX32VD and love it. I also purchased the 840 Pro SSD to install to speed it up. From reading this thread it is my understanding that the Windows 8 product key is coded into the BIOS but I need a legit copy of Windows 8 to install onto my new hard drive because the Zenbook doesn't come with one.

Does anyone know where to get a Legit Windows 8 64x ISO for download?

Try this to get your product key before you put in your new SSD.

    Produkey
    |MG| ProduKey 1.53 Download

    Windows 8 Download:
Upgrade to Windows 8 with only a product key - Microsoft Windows

All you have to do is download and run the Windows 8 upgrade wizard and it will ask for your product key. After you type in the product key you can then DL the ISO.

Without a Microsoft Technet subscription, I do not know of any other "legal" way to retrieve the Windows 8 ISO.

I tried doing the above a few weeks ago. I retreived my serial number, and then tried downloading Windows 8 exactly as you mentioned (using the upgrade tool from microsoft). The serial number was recognised, but the software said something like "this serial number is not a version which can be downloaded, for manufacturer use only" (something along those lines). So it didnt work.

Hey guys, I just received the asus ux32vd with samsung 830 250gb ssd and 8gb ram. Been searching around for a guide on how to do a clean install of win 7 on the ssd but couldn't find anything. If any of you guys did the upgrade and install a clean win 7 on the ssd without any issue please be kind and list the steps. I read around and see that people run into this "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now." issue alot. This scares me so I have not attempt to do anything yet. From reading this thread, I can see a lot of you guys did the ssd and ram upgrade so I'm sure most of you guys did a clean win 7 installation. Please help me so I wouldn't mess up the new laptop. Thanks

You want to do a clean instal? Go for it but why. I mean not sure were you bought it from but Xotic did it on mine w/830. What a couple of Asus apps you don't want. Just uninstal them. I challange anyone to demonstrate in any measurable way the benifit in your instance. If you want to do for the knowledge and fun of it then sure go for it. But the belief in some measurable performance increase is splitting hairs.

Since I am new to SSD's myself. Can I ask. No one suggests partitioning do they.

My bit of insanity is OC with MSI Afterburner on the GPU. And tonight played with a RAMdrive. So we all have our oddities.

    Good luck.

Tried changing thermal paste aswell. Used Arctic cleaning thermalpaste cleanupthingie, and replaced the paste with Phobyas Hegrease. I was extremely delicate handling the computer, and now when i try to power that thing on, nothing happens and only power and caps lock leds turn on. What could have gone wrong/why is it doing something like that? Already tried to look that i didint forget to put any cables back on, but its not that atleast. This is really going to rustle my jimmies if i broke my laptop.

edit: Weird , loosened those heat sink screws a bit and now it works again...

I agree, be careful not to over tighten screws and be careful of any metallic fragments that may be around that you moved when adjusting it.

If you try to use the guide to install win 8 on a pen drive/external disk you could use the SSD as an external disk, install win 7 and then swap the HDD with the SSD with win 7 preloaded. It works with win 8, and hopefully it will work with win 7.

Does anybody here use the UX32VD for photo editing, and more specifically - for RAW files processing?
I'm considering the UX32VD (upgraded with 10GB RAM and 512GB Samsung 830 SSD) for this purpose, and I'm not sure if it will be fast enough.
I usually open a couple of dozens of RAW files in Adobe Bridge, and then in ACR and Photoshop.
Do you think I'll see a significant improvement in speed if I choose to go with something like the Lenovo Y580 (quad core Core i7 3630QM, 16GB RAM, Samsung 830 512GB SSD)?
Can you perhaps post a link to any kind of video that would give me an idea on how fast the UX32VD is for this kind of work?
    Cheers,
    Ran

Yes a 3630qm would be significantly faster due to twice the core count and higher frequencies, but obviously the machine will be less portable.

    Hey All,

I just have a quick question, I just got my ux32vd the 30th Dec. But something weird is happening with my HDD.

When the laptop is idle or almost idle like installing windows updates or writing a document, the hard drive starts to make like a click-lock sound. But when for example I do more HDD intensive stuff like playing a game or compiling some code, no clicking sound at all, actually you can't even hear the HDD.

    Is this normal?

Thanks in advance for your time.

I don't think it's supposed to be that way, a similar problem is described in #569.

Windows 8 has a feature to restore to factory settings. Will this mess with my drivers, or will it really be good as new?

As far as I know it will restore the laptop to factory settings with the HW drivers and Asus bloatware.
