Unfortunately the HDD mode wasn't changed, it would have been an easy and most welcome fix. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi ragwo,

Same problem, stuck in bios after firmware upgrade.
Found the solution on a Swedish forum.
    In bios:
    Enable CSM
    Disable Secure Boot
    Restart
    Et Voilá!

    Hope this works for you.

Oh, and Hi everyone else in the forum (newbie).

    Thanks! That worked for me.

FWIW, I found that although the BIOS wouldn't boot from the internal hard drive, it had no problem booting from external drives (USB thumb drives, USB hard drives, USB DVD drives, etc.), so if this fix didn't work for you, maybe you can boot from an external drive, run winflash, and downgrade the BIOS. Unfortunately, the Easy Flash utility that's built in to the BIOS wouldn't let me revert to an older version; it would just say "Build Date is too Old!!" My understanding is that you can do this with winflash, if you start it from the command line with a special option.

    It works! :)
I can boot from a USB stick or external HDD. I've tried to boot from an external ssd with win 8 installed, previously used as the internal ssd, with no luck. A message which says that an error occurred and a restart is necessary appears after 30 seconds. So then I need to figure out how to start an OS from a USB stick in which I can install Winflash after boot or how to slipstream winflash to the OS on the USB stick. Would Bart PE or similar be the solution?

    Edit:
    Will try this solution tomorrow:
How to: Install Windows 8 on a pen drive

    Hi everybody. (first post)

I´m a onwer-wanna-be cause i´m realllllly looking forward to buy one of these ux32vd but got some doubts about the models...

Here in my country (Brazil) shops are selling the model UX32VD-R4016V which I cannot find specific information about the HDD and memory. What I would really like to know if they are removable, so I can replace with an SSD and upgrade memory.

Thanks and best regards to everybody!

It seems like the 4016v is exactly like the 4002v, so I think you can upgrade both the HDD and memory.

I have a couple questions about my UX32VD. I have had it for about three weeks now and am really impressed. I did the 10gb ram upgrade and put in a OCZ Vertex 4 128gb SSD.

Is it possible to setup the integrated Sandisk 32gb SSD and a 32GB partition of my OCZ in RAID 0?

    device manager.jpg

In Device Manager I have a device that does not have the proper drivers installed, any idea what it is? Along the same lines, FN>F2 shows on the screen that wifi is disabled but will not actually do so.

In WIndows Experience Index I am getting a 5.9 for Windows Aero graphics performance. I suspect the HD4000 is being used for that test, what setting do I change so the system will use the 620M? Or does this result have to do with having Aero disabled?

Has anybody been able to get boot times below 10 seconds with this system? My best is 13.8 seconds with bootracer. I have done the basic stuff like disabling processes with the black viper guide, hibernate. What more can be done here?

There was some discussion earlier in this thread regarding the throttling of the 620M, I have observed that it only happens in some games. I have mine clocked to 810mhz core and 1109mhz memory (+101, +209), in Stalker SOC it will run at those speeds the whole time. In some other games it will only run at the stock clock speeds for core but memory will remain at 1109mhz.

This system gets HOT if you game with it. I have been really impressed with the performance, but my CPU / GPU are usually 87-89C while gaming. The ambient temperature here is generally at least 30-40C. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any thermal paste I trust, I am still looking though.

The positives: I've managed to downgrade the BIOS to both 212 and 211 by installing win 8 on a usb stick and downgrading via winflash using the /nodate option.
The negatives: Still no boot option from internal HDD. I'm not able to install win 8 on the HDD because it's a GDP? data partition. Any suggestions?

It seems like I have to send the laptop to Asus for service.

No, this would waste a lot of capacity on your larger drive.
Also the iSSD is very slow compared to the regular SSD.
With Raid-0 you also double the risk of data loss due to failure of hw components and upgrading will be much harder, as you cant then extraxt the drive and clone it.. you would have to copy via LAN or USB the entire contents as a backup.

I have quite good boot times in W8.
Look here for my W8 boot:
Windows 8 x64 boots quick on Asus ux32vd ssd - YouTube

I didnt time it on W7, but I think it was about twice as much boot-time in W7.

my cores are nearing 90 degrees Celsius while playing planetside 2, should I have a cooling pad or prop it up with some bottlecaps to help the intake? I keep it on a flat surface while gaming.

I'd put it on something that allows some more space (and air) below the chassis -- two books under the left and right edges for example. Also I would try to underclock discrete card using MSI Afterburner or its counterparts if it doesn't impact the VGA -- and thus gaming -- performance markedly.

Can you make sure the HDD is not damaged? You can figure it through Disk Management in Windows (Win-R --> diskmgmt.msc --> Enter) or by using dmesg, parted etc. once booted from GNU/Linux USB-stick.

If it's working and recovery partition is still there you can prepare recovery DVDs/images and boot off them to restore your stock OS.

Thanks, but the recovery partition is gone and the HDD works when used in an external cabinet. I've contacted the shop where I bought the laptop for a return. They will send me a new one when the BIOS error is confirmed. Much better than returning it to Asus. Excellent service! :)

Thank you all for suggestions trying to fix my laptop

90 degrees is hows its going to be at when playing a game. The cpu for instance will not allow it to go much higher by throtteling the power and multiplicator making the cpu slower until temperature is acceptable again.

Considering planetside can go down to below 30 fps on my high end gaming computer, how many fps do you actually get on this ultrabook? I would definetly stay away from underclocking the dedicated graphics card due to the two points above,

    Guys give me the truth.

Will this thing last me 4 years or more?

I am going to college for computer science, so I am going to need to make sure it runs ides and compilers and like that.

I also am a bit of a power user, I like to edit videos here and there with HD files.

I'm a bit of a gamer, but I mostly play l4d which i know will be fine on this setup.

I am going to be upgrading the ram and to a SSD.

so is it worth it or would you guys recommend something else for a person like me?

I want to be able to do what ever i want to do with it not be limited to small things and a slow computer since this will be the only computer I have because I will be living on campus.

Someone suggested a Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 but I think the asus beats it.

I'm also a computer science student, currently in my last year. I've had a macbook pro 13" since 2009 and just upgraded, after 3 years, to the UX32VD mainly because of the much bigger screen real estate. The macbook could have lasted me till my graduation, but I was just so tired of always having to hook up my laptop to an external screen to do some efficient programming because the screen resolution was too small! I'd definitely say this computer is sufficient for the next 4 years, you don't need that much processing power for a computer science course in general. IDE's aren't that demanding, and unless you're running algorithms on huge sets of data, the processing power should be enough, and otherwise you should be running your CPU-intensive application on a cluster and not on a laptop/desktop ;).

Performance-wise, the Lenovo is definitely better, but they are 2 different kind of laptops, the lenovo is a regular laptop and the Asus is an ultrabook which makes it much easier to carry with you. I wouldn't want to lug that lenovo around everyday on campus if I were you...

Yes, it works just fine, 10GB ram in total now :).

Hey all. I apologize if this has been discussed already. If it has please do link me - I tried using the search function of the site, but it never returns posts regarding the search term, just the discussion thread it is a part of (which can be hundreds of pages).

    I have a UX32VD with an upgraded Crucial M4 256gb SSD. I also upgraded to Windows 8.
Everything runs fairly well after the upgrades except for a few drivers, especially bluetooth, but I am in talks with Asus about fixing this issue.
My main issue is battery life and I am wondering if anyone here has experienced this at all.
I get about 3 or 4 hours of battery life max, during normal internet surfing kind of use. If I am playing a game or watching videos the battery life drops to about 2 hours.
Am I missing some sort of battery management driver or something? Is there anything I can do here short of getting a replacement?

    Thanks,
    Adam

i think 3-4 hrs is normal if your screen brightness is not set to minimum (especially at max brightness). 2 hrs playing games seems to be the case for me too. but i am okay with it because i expected the battery life to be like this anyways; were you expecting a 10 hr battery or something on this ultrabook? this isnt the acer timelineX of the asus U36 series you know....battery life is NOT UX32VD's selling point

things to help make battery life longer, all can be adjusted in power options:
    - adjust screen brightness to lowest level when on battery
    - adjust intel thermal framework to use the lowest TDP (i believe its 10) when on battery
    - adjust maximum cpu load to something like 10% when on battery
    - turn off backlit keyboard when on battery
    - adjust your intel graphics power management to use maximum battery life when on battery

all of the above assumes that you dont really game while on battery; a cap on cpu load may affect your gaming experience. if you insist on gaming on battery, well you get what you ask for

I have found with the new 213 BIOS that the fan problem seems to have been fixed. Almost every time I would bring the laptop out of sleep the fan would ramp up and then back down. This has not happen at all since the BIOS update.

Also I noticed in CPU-Z under memory that it states the laptop is running in dual channel mode with 10GB of RAM! I didn't think this was possible with different capacity RAM modules.

I've just bought a new UX32vd and successfully replaced the HDD with an SDD and upgraded the RAM, but I then managed to brick my laptop on the first day of use while attempting a BIOS update to 213.

The update itself seemed to go fine, but once the system rebooted it automatically went to the BIOS setup menu. When I attempt to exit this menu in any way (save and exit, discard changes and exit) it just boots right back up to the same menu.

I tried to reflash from the EasyFlash utility in the setup screen, but it won't let me reflash to 212 or 213 because the "build date is too old."

I'm assuming I'll just have to bite the bullet and bring it in for repairs on Monday, but is there anything else I might be able to try?

I encountered the same problems. If you read from #643 and onwards you'll find a lot of possible fixes. The first thing you could try is to disable secure boot and enable CSM.
The other thing you could do is to downgrade the BIOS using winflash with the /nodate option from command line. The easiest way to do it is via Win 8 on an external HDD/ pen drive. How to install Win 8 on a pen drive
Just remember to run cmd as admin.

    Experiences from Sweden
Mine was in the shop for a month, awaiting a new screen. And then two weeks due to a defective ISSD. When I got it back, the keyboard lighting had died, it was dirty and there were scratches around some of the screws. Three months to the day after buying it, ASUS finally gave up and gave me a new one, with Windows 8 preinstalled.

Considering the above and all the problems folks have run into when doing simple things, I've decided to settle with the RAM upgrade to 10 GB and will not be touching the BIOS until they release one that's bulletproof. Oh, and by the way. It's plenty fast as it is and Windows 8 is cool too. I'm happy. :)

I've been using my UX32VD for a while now but I have some issues:
    1) My battery can hold only about 2 hours (with Wi-Fi on, screen brightness at the lowest and lowest keyboard backlight)
    2) Everybody say that the fan is really loud. Well, it doesn't annoy me but the fan is running mostly all the time, when I'm browsing the internet and so on.
I haven't done any hardware upgrade yet, only upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and I don't use all of the stupid stuff from Asus, such as Life Frame, Power4Gear Hybrid Utility or Instant On but all drivers (or BIOS) are up-to-date. Can you help me please?

UPDATE: Battery is OK, it can hold up to 5,5 hours (I didn't do anything :D) and I don't really care about the fan, it's fine and I thing it will get better after exchanging HDD for SSD.

Sounds like a horror story, I'm really glad I returned it to the retailer, not Asus. I'm a bit reluctant to upgrade the BIOS when I receive the new one. Why fix a thing that's not (completely) broken?
Glad to hear that it worked out for you in the end :)

After you update to BIOS 213 try resetting the CMOS to fix the fan issue. Also I would make sure that the Intel thermal framework is installed.

I have also attach a screen shot of CPUZ running in Dual channel.

Could you please tell us how the fan works now compared to BIOS ver. 212?

Basically it works as it should, it only increases speed when the laptop is heating up or under load and its gradual. The biggest change for me was that the fan did not run full speed when I brought it out of sleep mode like it did with BIOS 212 and below.

For other ppl it actually doesn't. In the other threads it has already been confirmed by several users (me included) that the fan behavior remains unchanged. It still often cycles on, off, on, off with very small intervals which is pretty annoying. CMOS resetting doesn't change nor does intel Thermal framework installed/not installed make any difference. It should be noted that if your fan is constantly (due to the cpu load) on you obviously don't experience any problem behavior as the cycling is the main question. Fan running on full speed was a different problem iirc
