Yes it's safe. I did this plenty of times with Windows Vista and 7.
Compare the SHA1 of the ISO you downloaded with the one from MSDN.

I installed Windows 8 on my Asus UL30VT-A1 (Core 2 Duo U7300, OC'd to 1.73GHz, GeForce G210M). It's Graphics subscore is also 4.5. With Windows 7, the same subscore was 5.4. In order to get the pre-Optimus Intel/Nvidia switching, I had to install the Asus driver from 2009, I think the date was.
It looks like 4.5 is my lucky number. -
Like a dumb s, I lost all 4 screws that are used to screw the hard drive's mounting plates to the laptop!! It seems that the laptop battery uses the same screws, so I borrowed 2 from the battery to screw the hard drive on.
Does anyone know what size are those screws? -
Whats the ASUS utility I need to install to get the FN hotkeys to work and on screen overlays for screen brightness, etc?
-
hai,
i found Corsair memory CMSO8GX3M1A1600C11 on indonesian local store
(PC 12800 CL 11)
is it compatible with my UX32VD ?
thanks -
sometimes my zenbook's screen isn't as bright as it should be, even though it says it's at 100%.
I thought I was crazy at first, but saw it happen right in front of my own eyes - I rebooted, screen was super bright, then instantly lost some brightness, but couldn't increase it.
I use my zenbook in performance mode, could it be diverting power from the display? -

I just thought I would share my experience into getting my UX32VD upgraded. I am quite a newbie when it comes to all these things, and this forum has helped a lot. So this is just a recap for those who find trawling through the forum confused. Thank you to all those who have helped, I'm simply writing a summary below.
First off, I purchased:
- UX32VD computer
- KINGSTON 8GB SO-DIMM 1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 - KVR16S11/8
- SAMSUNG 840 SERIES 250GB SSD SATA/600 TLC
- 16 gb USB stick
I played around with the computer for a few days (with HDD) while I understood what to do. Just make sure there is nothing important on the HDD, otherwise back it up. The first thing you will need to do is get hold of the Windows 8 software/iso. You do not need a serial number since this is inbuilt into the bios (I never needed to enter it at any point). In case you really need the serial number (in case things go all wrong), there is software that can extract this (google belarc advisor). Everybody says you can get hold of the Windows 8 iso from the Microsoft MSDN network.
MSDN Subscriber Downloads (you want windows 8 , 64bit iso)
Problem is you need to be a subscriber. If you are a student you might be able to get it from the student msdn network (dreamspark). Otherwise you will need to find it some other way (well known torrent sites ... see page 60). You will need to find the en_windows_8_x64_dvd_915440.iso one, which matches the one on the MSDN network (some torrents have multiples isos within them, so dont be surprised if the file is very big. I was a bit sceptical about this, but I gave it a try. Once I got it, I matched the SHA1 value given on the MSDN website 1CE53AD5F60419CF04A715CF3233F247E48BEEC4 using the following software eXpress CheckSum Calculator. And it worked. I'll be honest I have got no idea what this is, but I assume its some kinda validation tool. Once you have the iso, download this software Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool.
Microsoft Store Online
Quite straight forward to use. Put the iso on the USB stick to make it bootable.
The comes the more difficult part I found. Opening up the device (make sure the device is disconnected from power supply and fully shut down). I followed this video Asus Zenbook Prime: SSD & RAM Upgrade - YouTube (you will need a standard screw driver and a Torx 5 one, you can get this at local DIY store or on ebay), Opening the lid is quite ok (you will notice there is a bit of glue holding it in place). Then you will need to remove the screws from the battery (I don't think you see the guy on the video actually taking them out), but you need to take them all out. I use a pair of tweezers to help, just be careful you dont drop any screws onto the circuitry. When removing the harddrive, remove the 4 screws (the videos only mentions 2). And then it just slides out without any force. Be very careful taking it out as you must lift the battery, without disconnecting anything else. It took me about an hour (i'm slow !) to do it . Then closed it all.
I then plugged in power supply and inserted my USB stick. Press delete as soon as you turn it on to enter the Bios. You will find the place where you select what boots first (I was a bit confused actually where in the menu, but then found where you can bring up the USB over the SDD). Save and reboot. Started installing windows 8. It starts to copy files onto the SSD . And then the computer reboots. Of course it will reboot onto the USB which it no longer needs to! So it will start installing from scratch again. Press cancel or whatever, to make sure the computer restarts and press Delete again so you can enter the bios and change the order and boot to SSD first (the usb is no longer needed at this point, but keep it in I guess). And it will install from the SSD.
Then I just went on the Asus website and downloaded all the drivers (some need to be installed before others, but it mentions this on the asus page).
Hope this helps some newbie like me. Good luck -
Processor: 7.1
RAM: 7.2
Graphics: 5.4
Gaming Graphics: 6.4
Primary Harddrive: 8.1
My hd4000 is running version 9.17.10.2867 of the driver.
This is on W8 PRO X64, I also have 10Gb RAM and the Samsung 830 256Gb SSD.
Did an "upgrade install", but I did this on a clean install of W7 Ultimate X64.
Before installing, I upgraded the BIOS. -
I ran on W7 and got a tad less score:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3517U Processor,ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. UX32VD score: P1381 3DMarks
My benchmark there was without memory upgrade.
I also ran it on PCmark7:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3517U Processor,ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. UX32VD score: 3761 PCMarks
And 3dmark 11:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3517U Processor,ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. UX32VD score: P1330 3DMarks
I have yet to try it on W8 though, but I run the same OC and now I have 10Gb RAM.
Everything feels much smoother than W7, but I havent benchmarked the graphics in W8 yet.
BTW: Easier to compare here:
http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dm11/4943997/3dm11/4467305
I see your running a non FM driver, also you have 2Gb more RAM.
But they are quite close.. However I will try some benchmarks on W8, if 3dmark11 works in W8
PS.. After I installde W8, I found a setting inside Nvidia Control panel, it had a strange setting (I think it was strange) for the PhysX.
PhysX was set to "Main processor", but I think it should be set to either the 620M or auto? I might be wrong But I hve changed mine to auto, which is set to recommended.
I think the main processor is the CPU? if so, it will perform very bad in physx with main processor in the physx? (see the nvidia conrol panel->PhysX Configuration. -

thanks, will report back in the future to see if this helped!

How to disable Intel® Display Power Saving Technology -
First of all, thanks to all of you for the invaluable info in this thread!
I've just received my UX32VD and can't help to notice that the laptop isn't level, only three rubber feet are properly touching the table. The one in the lower left corner is off by 0,5-1 mm. Also, the trackpad sits a bit low in the lower left corner, there is a sharp edge where the trackpad meets the chassis. The last possible issue I've found so far is that the trackpad is unable to distinguish between left and right click if I don't press down in the two first cm or so on the lower end on the trackpad. Have any of you encountered such issues? Is it just Asus' poor QC and something I should expect or should I return the laptop? -

So, I purchased an open box UX32VD-DB71 (Win 7 version) from Amazon...
Maybe this wasn't the best idea. Notebook looks fine, panel seems good, etc...but the first thing I noticed is that it is missing the 2GB SODIMM that should have been preinstalled (so I only have 2GB RAM - not great news, but I was going to upgrade the RAM anyway, so this isn't a deal breaker...).
The next thing I noticed that was missing was the AI Recovery utility that creates the recovery discs. The machine does have a recovery partition, which I used to restore the machine, but what is on there does not seem to have all the ASUS software installed (just some of it)...I also noticed that I had a "Win 7 Home Premium for Refurbished Computers" sticker on the underside of the laptop with another license key.
Is there someplace to download the AI Recovery utility? I can't find it on the Asus site...I guess if I can't find it then I will probably send this machine back and try again...
Edit: Looks like you can buy recovery media for $50, I assume the discs would install the recovery partition onto a new drive as well as all the normal utilities...sigh...anyone know if there is another way or should I plan on ordering this? -
I'm positive that after I did a clean install of Windows 8 and installed the Asus drivers, my Graphics subscore was 5. something. I'm not sure what I screwed up. -

Hello friends, does the screen of your Ux32vds also have an obvious yellow tint? I already connected it to an external monitor and it wasn't present there so I guess it's an issue with the laptop display.
the splendid program as well as it's windows equivalent can improve it to some point but the result still isn't satisfying at all as some yellowish tint remains and the screen is getting darker.
some backlight bleeding is also present but it's not half as annoying as the yellow tint.
I really want to return it but I'm wondering how good my chances are that the next one won't have those issues?

In general, laptops screen and monitor colors are not accurate. According to Digital Versus, the Delta E (representing color accuracy) is around 3.5 which is very good for a laptop. If you don't like the yellow tint color it could be because you are used to a blueish screen or maybe the screen has a bit too much red/yellow in the picture.
Either way, there's probably a way to add a little blue in the screen colors... not sure how though.
Hope this helps,

Another problem I was hoping someone has a solution to:
In the device manager I have an unknown "PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller". I've installed the chipset, graphics cards, cardreader, wlan, BT, ATK, Audio, Instant on, Smart gesture, WiDi and Radio Control. What could the missing device be?
Thanks in advance! -
Yea, i would for sure prefer the screen to be less yellowish than it is right now, what i like to compare it with is how it looks compared to things in real life. so if i for example watch a football match on my lap top then it should colourwise at least sortof look like it would when i was in the stadium myself, that for sure isnt the case here. and its further away from replicating it than any other display/screen/monitor/TV that i owned in recent years. also usually it can be calibrated while here im failing to do so, its just too far on the "yellow site" if you will. all i can do is water it down a bit and thats it.
what im wondering abt now is if its the same for all of you guys here? cos if not then then the next thing i would do isl to exchange it with another ux32vd.
here is a picture documenting the problem, i would say that screen of my asus is even more yellowish than the one on the left here though:

Mine doesn't have seem to be be as yellow as yours but the colors are bit off. I wouldn't say it's all that bad. I have a Dell external monitor and it is much worse. At first I thought it was defective but the IT guys at work told me that they are all like that (we have hundreds of them deployed in our company).

However, the unknown device, try to find a fix
btw. I also installed some Intel ssd thing, but I cant remember what it was.. LOL. Some Intel Rapid something.
Rapid storage maybe.should not affect graphics though -
-
BTW I have the same Nvidia drives as you, I got them through Windows update. -
I've tried uninstalling the Asus Intel driver, but Windows automatically restores it, probably from it's driverstore. -
Related, does anyone know how to automatically deactivate the track pad with the detection of a USB pointing device? My old Asus had this feature, can't seem to find it here.

I wonder, has anyone else here had the Asus driver installed and then was able to upgrade to the latest Intel driver? -
thanks! looking for impressions of other users here in order to see how ill precede.
-
Installed latest Intel driver from Asus site ("VGA_Intel_Win7_64_Z917102828"). Screen goes black during driver install, does not come back. Plug HDMI cable in, nothing, Power cycle PC. Still no video on laptop monitor (this includes the BIOS boot screen) but I have video on the TV I plugged in via HDMI. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking. Uninstalled Intel video card from Device Manager, reboot. Video now appears on both screens (no driver is installed). Install latest Intel driver. -
How do you set the track pad features from the driver? There used to be an Asus app, I can't seem to find it.

another big problem im having connected to the yellow tinted screen is that the asus splendid program im using to make to screen colours bearable is switching off while im playing games and the screen goes yellow again. its the same with the windows colour calibration.. does anybody know a solution for this?
would be very grateful! -
I installed 0 of the apps I didnt need and I dont have a yellow tint. My white looks very pure!
ps, Do you also have the fullhd version? I know there is a hd-ready version too -
Has the fan issue been fixed, also has anyone updated in Windows 8 and how is it running ?
-
-
-
i have the fullhd version, didnt know there was another one.
i think ill soon give up and try to return it. do you guys think warranty covers this? i mean i have some good amount of backlight bleeding too that i could refer to if nothing works.. -
How do you run Smart Gesture? Doesn't seem to show up anywhere?

New BIOS released
Hope it cures the fan issues
BIOS 213 (UX32VD)
1.Update EC FW
2.When setting Admin/User/HDD password, Press hotkey Tab can Visible/Invisible Password.
Edit:
I flashed the new BIOS and it has removed all my boot options. The SDD, and everything else, is gone from the boot menu, and I can't choose boot order. The only thing I can do is to choose "add new boot option". Then I have to add path for boot option, which I have no clue on how to do. I wonder if I'm a bit screwed. Could somebody help me please?
Edit 2:
I've tried to flash 212 but can't because the build date is too old. Any ideas? -
Got mine yesterday. Lovely piece of hardware. Have installed a 8 gb RAM module and a Samsung 840 256 GB Pro and I'm up running. One curious problem so far. Had it before I reinstalled on the new SSD as well. I bought a Corsair Flash Voyager GT 32GB USB 3.0 stick. The first time I insert it after the system is freshly installed it works OK. But after I remove it (safely) and reinsert it I get an error message saying it cannot be recognized and might be faulty. I checked it in my desktop machine (win7) and it works fine there. Rebooting doesn't help. I haven't got any other usb 3 devices to try with now, but usb 2 sticks and dvd writer works fine. Has anyone got similar problems and found a solution?
-
-
However I'd not recommend you using WinFlash as it may become unstable and crash driving your BIOS not working. -
-
If you previously prepared recovery disks/images with Asus AI Recovery utility which comes with your device, you could restore your system to factory state -- except from BIOS, -- and then run WinFlash. Maybe that would be the option.
I've also updated to BIOS 213, but nothing of this sort happened to my notebook: both stock Win7 on HDD and the one I've installed later on SSD are still bootable. -
For example a laptop that was installed with AHCI doesn't boot with IRRT and conversely.
It's strange that the bios update would change these options though and perhaps it's not related. -
BTW, does 213 fix the fan issue?
