Just a quick update to my above post. Got my Win8 Pro DVD that MS shipped to me a few weeks ago. Found an external DVD drive and BAM, got Win8 to install! I guess the Win8 Upgrade I DLed didn't play nice with the laptop, but this DVD worked fine.

Hi guys, I am new comer on this forum.
I’ve get my UX32VD (intel i5) few days ago,
And I successfully install a fresh copy of win-8 pro without any problem.
I’ve a few questions for upgrade plan of my ux32VD (Sorry if I missed out any similar question on previous post)
    1. Can I upgrade memory with 8GB Corsair Vengeance CMSX8GX3M1A1600C10? or any recommended memory type of Kingston / crucial ?
    2. Is UX32VD support for SATA 3 ? if I want to upgrade with any SATA 3 SSD, it will get 6Gbps speed (theory) ? If cannot, maybe I prefer to buy any SATA 2 SSD but increase SSD capacity for remain budgets.

    Thank you.

Hi I installed Win7 on my new Samsung 830 series SSD 256GB. I just converted my windows image to a USB stick . The USB was already set to bootable as well. Now I dont think Asus uses UEFI at all but I wasnt using Win8. My windows was a retail version as I couldnt be bothered cloning the asus OEM image with its bloatware and doing the data realignment and all that. I used the bootable USB stick and it installed just fine. One thing you must take the stick out when the notebook restarsts otherwise it will boot to installation again.

Just out of curiosity, is there any way to manually turn off battery charging? Say I used the battery until 70% and I plug it in, but I don't want to charge the computer. Does anyone know of any utilities compatible with the UX32VD?

Are you sure it's not your playback application or reciever that is set to something?
In VLC you can change audio device, channels, etc. (right click on the picture while playing).
The HDMI should be able to transfer "what ever" is there, but your application might be transcoding it to some other format.

I'm not sure if I have the keyboard while on battery, I'll check when I'm back home.

The specs look like the onboard specs, so I think so. Cant really say, but download CPU-Z :) Then you can check!
I got the same performance for ram in the WEI with 10Gb, but that just measures transfer speed I think.
The 10Gb is nice when using adobe applications though :)

As for SSD, I would buy the 840 SSD (pro) if you can get it for a good price.
If not, go for the 256Gb Samsung 830, if 256Gb is enough for you.

As far as UX32VD's, I read (when updating my bios) that there is now a version of the UX32VD without built in SSD.
I have the I7 fullhd UX32VD, but I think the one without built in SSD is called UX32VDa(?).

Ps. the reasons I recommend the samsungs:
They are both 7mm and go in without modding
Also the samsung 830 is very reliable and it's performance is more "real life" than benchmarks. You wont win all benchmarks with it, but it will perform like you expect and most likely not give you bsods like many sanforce SSD's will.
The 840 is even faster, it has a newer processor and uses different ram, etc. I cant really say anything about reliability, but if it contends like the 830, it's a super drive!

    Regarding the RAM:
I bought the cheapest CL11 with correct speed (PC12800) and 204P, it was the corsair for me. It cost me about 33$ in Norway (we dont pay in dollars of course, so it was actually 200 NOK incl freight).

Ps. I transferred the "aluminium sticker" from the old RAM to the new. I think this is there to work both as a heat spreader, as well as functioning like a shield.

I have the game, but have yet to try it.
Have you installed all the latest drivers and updated the BIOS to the latest version?

    1. Use 1600Mhz (PC3-12800), CL11, 204pin, 1.35V. I used the brand Cruicial. Most of the manufacturers have a "ram chooser", so if you go to cruical or kingston, etc. you can choose you have the ux32vd and it should recommend some RAM. If you get a different timing, it might make your pc single channel which in theory limits your memory bandwidth.
    2. Yes, it's SATA-3. You want a 7mm drive, so that limits your choice quite a bit. I would go for Samsung 840 (there is also a pro version of the 840) or the 830. I use the 256gb 830, since I bought the SSD and UX32VD when the 840 was just announced and I didnt want to wait.

Not sure.. I had a Samsung Chronos 7 before this laptop and that had a "battery saving" option where one could enable that it would not charge above 80%. Maybe one can install the application, but I dont know what happends if it's uncompatible :p

If someone wants to reinstall to a clean OS and wants to try this before reinstalling, that would be super.

    Hi, I checked now..
I do have the keyboard backlit when on battery.

Maybe you forgot to install something, or maybe you do not have the latest bios update?

The Samsung 840 Pro also automatically encrypts the data with AES-256 (default, non changable), so if you set the hard drive password in bios, the drive will be encrypted and unreadable unless you have the password.

Hey. I will soon be received the UX32VD and Samsung 840 SSD. But I am a complete newbie when it comes to installing a fresh copy of Windows 8. I noticed many of you were easily able to do so.

I have looked online, but there are so many instructions I am unsure what to follow. Would anybody kindly be able to suggest a good guide, or be able to give some step by step instructions?

    The basic steps are:

    1. Get a copy of the OS (you can legally download the ISO and burn your own copy).
    2. Backup any data from your current install.
    3. Get drivers for your machine, at least chipset, graphics and most importantly wireless/LAN so you can get on the internet to download anything you missed.
    4. Install the new drive, set your machine to boot from the optical drive in the bios.
    5. Go through the install.
    6. Install all the drivers you have and see if anything is missing.

Hi! I've just received a Zenbook UX32vd ultrabook, and I find the screen woobles a lot. Here's a video, I'm only slightly pressing the screen. Is it normal or should I be concerned and call Asus?

I just bought a UX32VD second hand. I can't get the backlight for the keyboard to turn on :( Where might it be disabled?

EDIT: The computer is still with the stock install as far as I can tell.

I've enabled/disabled the light sensor, restarted the computer and no changes.

Any way I can test it?

When you installed the Pro version on the SSD, was the Pro version actually installed or did you still end up with the Windows 8 version that came with the laptop? When I installed a Pro version on my new SSD, I ended up with the same version that came with the laptop. I was not prompted to enter the Product Key for the Pro version. Windows 8 was activated with the Product Key stored in the BIOS.

I had contacted MS via their MS community forum and was told the only way to go from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro was to buy the Pro Pack and use Add additional Windows features. I am pretty annoyed with what I was told me. I paid $125 for the OEM Pro version and can't use it. I don't know if I can call MS and complain and they will make an exception. What number did you use to call MS?

The screen woobles when I put the laptop on the table, and when I change the angle of the screen. I have been trying the same with different laptops and it doesn't happen, in fact the similar Zenbook ux31 is rock solid.

What I am asking is: do other owners of the ux32vd experience the same or did I just get a deffecetive unit? In that case, should I send it for repair or return it?

    Thank you.

On some forums I have read there is a void sticker that links the cover to the body. Can anybody confirm this? Hopefully replacing the HDD and Ram will not void the warranty. ...

The Nvidia 620M on the UX32VD has surprisingly plenty of room for overclocking, just like someone mentioned earlier in the thread. With Afterburner I can set the 620M to 879MHz core / 1200MHz mem (stock 715MHz core / 1000MHz mem). I get 1413 points i 3DMark11. Stock resulted in P1154. This is without rising any voltage and completely stable. Temperatures is the only thing to keep in mind, but it was at most just +1-2c over the standard temps. Guild Wars 2 runs at 50fps in the cities using 1920x1080 and high textures with the other settings on medium. Very impressive!

NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3517U Processor,ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. UX32VD score: P1413 3DMarks

Just ran 3DMark06 as well, and got 9000 points. Cool little machine.

I just purchased my ux32vd with windows 8 and have the same problems. Were any fixes found? I just installed the fan control application, and loaded the ux32vd config for it. Any better fixes out there for the fan or for the hard drive scratching noises? Should i return for a new new notebook?

I am getting a code 31 driver conflict or cannot find driver for this hardware device.

Anyone knows which device driver I need to use for this? I've tried everything on Asus' website.

New UX32VD owner here. Stock W8, HDD and ram. Have a 8 Gb stick ready, but will wait untill I get a Samsung SSD.

Very pleased with the machine but stuggling to see the logic in W8!

Biggest letdown is the Wifi, even close to the router the connection is not stable or fast. Took 7 attemts to download a legit 107Mb file.
Running a D-Link 655 router that I'm pretty sure is set up correctly. Any ideas?

BTW sunny d, there is not void sticker on mine and I've read that opening the bottom does not void the warrenty.

I am going into computer science and need a good stable laptop. Should I go with this or a macbook pro with a ssd and ram upgrade as well?

I'm using it for heavy video editing with Avid Media Composer 6 and Premiere CS6. Even if they run off the 5400rpm HDD, they are very responsive and works just great! (I have my OS on the build in 24GB iSSD).

I also have a Macbook Pro 15" Late 2011 that I got from the school. The Zenbook feels just as fast even if it's 1kg lighter or so. And the screen is just sublime. Much better than the Macbook.

Can't say much about long term stability, but the Zenbook runs cooler than the Macbook. The Macbook can hit temps of almost 100C on the CPU while working.. The Zenbook on the other hand hovers around 75-80c while doing heavy encoding. It should translate to good stability.

My Graphics subscore is 4.4. Is this subscore normal? It seems kind of low to me.

I installed the latest Intel driver and got a subscore of 4.4. Thinking that my subscore had been higher, before doing this, I reinstalled the Asus driver. Reran the assessment and my subscrore was still 4.4. I could have sworn that may Graphics subscrore, before installing the latest Intel driver, was in the 5.x range, but I don't remember for sure.

Weird on the wifi problems. I actually had the same experience on a wired connection for a few days. Failed dls I've never had before. Seems to have stabilized though.

W8 though has been an experience! Still miss the start button, but the speed, especially at startup is worth the minor annoyances. And Office 2013 is awesome.

Hey all, been surfing the forums for a while, have finally decided to step into the "real mans" laptops, and picked one of these guys up, as my old timelinex has seen better days.

i picked up a vd with windows8 already installed, an 8gb Mushkin CAS11 RAM, and an intel 520 240gb ssd.

My issue is that im not very familiar with upgrades, other than just the swapping out of ram, and am not sure the steps to follow to get win8 onto the new ssd along with all the necessary drivers. if anyone could give a newbie some direction, in lehmans terms, or perhaps a few links as to where to go, i would be hugely thankful.

    Hello guys!
I have my UX32VD in hand and I'm waiting for my crucial 7mm ssd and corsair ram to do the upgrades.

    Mine came with windows 8.
Will I be able to do a fresh install with Windows 8 on a usb key? How?

    I'm asking this because I don't have a windows 8 product key...
I'm used to do fresh installs with windows 7 (from msdn iso) and product key.

    Thanks in advance,
    -firestart3r

    P.S.
What's the deal with the integrated SSD?
What's on it? Can I choose not to use it?!?! (the crucial ssd is probably faster and more reliable...)

    Hello,
Are you sure you don't have a Windows 8 product key? On most laptops it is either on a sticker or on a manual.
I donwloaded my W8 from Microsoft and I was given the option to write it on a dvd or a usb drive during the setup process perhaps something similar exists with the Asus.
Otherwise it may be possible (if still available) to download the trial version then enter your product key but of course only if you found your product key.

Last but not least there are kits (hw + sw) that enables to copy an exact replica of your hard drive to your new sdd via an usb<->sdd adaptator. Mine is from Apricorn.

I'm pretty sure I don't have a sticker on my zenbook nor in the manual.
I heard that Windows 8 has a new system to authenticate Windows... I'm not sure how that works.

Maybe that's why I don't have my product key?

Anybody did a clean/fresh install of Windows 8 on their Zenbook? I would prefer this over cloning the drive to a new ssd.

    Thanks,

You can get the product key from the asus website after you register there. Theres some button, however it didnt work for me when i tried it. Says I dont have any win8 blah blah.

Anyway, I extracted the product key with some program, dont remember which before i removed the hard drive.

    RE: Poor Wifi.

I have noticed that if I close the lid and the machine goes to sleep/hibernate for a few hours, the wifi doesn't work properly on resume.

A re-boot is needed. Very frustrating.

    Hope some updates turn up.

You can control what the box does on closing the lid, both on a/client and battery.

Thanks. however this is a problem, not a feature. The machine "should" wake up properly don't you think?

Anyway, mine was set to sleep. I understand that sleep will go into Hibernation regardless after some time. Will do some tests and see what happens.

An another note, any one with an email adresse to asus. Can't register my produck and it throw "incorrect serial no. Had 5 diffenet people read my serial from the bottom, box and inner box. No variations work, but everyone agrees on the same number....

hmmm I know I'm a noob but how can I download windows 8 (for fresh install) when I am not a member of the MSDN network? it asks me to pay a subscription of a few thousand dollars. ...

I believe when I was watching reviews Lisa from mobiletechreviews mentioned that on sleep/resume some power option lowers the power of the WiFi so it should be configurable somewhere.

Check the power brick for the Windows key.

I just did RAM and SSD upgrades and also installed a fresh copy of Win 8 Pro.

Really made this machine fly! Even though I'm not totally convinced by the win 8 user interface.. although startup times and resource usage are amazingly good

I want to inform all who are thinking of upgrading to win 8 that it is necessary to update BIOS (to version 212) in order for the ATK-drivers to work properly, the Fn-button shortcuts and so on. Before BIOS update it was all a mess and pretty much nothing worked, after the update there are no problems at all. I would also recommend not using WinFlash but rather the flash tool available in BIOS which is a much safer choice

I just got my UX32VD and I'm having trouble with the USB ports. I did a clean install of Windows 7 and the USB ports worked fine with USB2 mice and storage. If I install the ASUS Intel USB 3 driver, all the ports stop working. If I install the latest Intel USB 3 driver, the ports stop working. Only after uninstalling the Intel driver do the ports work again. I don't have any USB 3 devices to test with. Am I not supposed to use this driver? Don't I need some sort of driver to get USB 3 speeds?
