I just bought the UX32VD-DH71 that came pre-installed with Windows 8. I went the same route as you but with a 256GB SSD instead (also the 830). The RAM installed fine, however I've spent the whole week trying to install Windows 8 on the new SSD with no luck so far. I even read through all 50 pages but most previous posts had Windows 7 pre-installed and not Windows 8. I haven't found anyone yet in our situation that's been successful.
I attempted to use a USB stick with Windows 8 Pro to install in UEFI mode, but I kept getting an error saying something about the Product Key not matching the Windows Image File (I'll get the exact wording later). I ended up calling Asus who told me that since I'm changing the HW, the Product Key that was pre-installed on the notebook won't work, and to call Microsoft for assistance. So I called Microsoft last night and what ended up happening is that they are shipping me a Windows 8 Professional DVD they want me to try. Once it comes in I've scheduled a call back with the Microsoft rep whom I spoke with yesterday to assist me with the rest of the install process. He assured me that this should work, but I won't find out until next week when the DVD arrives.
Sorry it didn't help much, but if you find out another way please let me know. Having Windows 8 pre-installed certainly seemed to make upgrading the HD extremely cumbersome.

You could try cloning the drive if you use cloning software that understands ssds and sets the alignment properly. I have done it successfully with Windows 7. However the Asus support telling you that changing the hardware means you need a new product code is interesting. Makes me wonder if the cloned version would complain that is not activated or not legitimate or something. I don't think it should but maybe the ant piracy stuff is different in Windows 8.

I ended up performing a secure erase on my SSD and the internal iSSD to be sure there was no traces of anything before starting. What struck me as odd is the setup never asked me to enter the product key and I was also asked to choose between upgrading Windows or performing a custom installation. What was there to upgrade? Nothing. I tried it and it said to start Windows normally and then perform the upgrade. I proceeded with the custom installation, choose to install Windows on the unallocated SSD and in a short time a message was returned with the error code 0x80070057.
From what I could find, an 0x80070057, is a general error code that occurs when Windows is unable to continue because of a hardware problem, driver problem, etc. I rebooted and tried setup again. This time I could see that the four partitions were created on the SSD, but I was still unable to install Windows. I didn't always get the 0x80070057, sometimes I would get a message that Windows couldn't be installed in the partition or Windows was unable to format the partition. I don't think the SSD is bad, since I was able to secure erase it and was able to previously clone my HD to the SSD.
For another experiment, I installed the SSD in my UL30VT notebook and tried to run the Windows 8 setup. This time, before I could proceed with the setup, I was asked to enter the Windows 8 Pro product key. This made sense, since this was a clean installation of Windows 8. I quit the setup at this point and placed the SSD back in the UX32VD.
I wrote to Asus Tech Support for advice. I was told to upgrade my BIOS and given a link to version 202. My BIOS is currently version 212, which is the latest version. I was also told that the Windows product key from the original Asus Windows 8 installation is not stored in the BIOS.
I had downloaded PartedMagic and used it to create a bootable USB stick. PartedMagic comes with a GUI and disk utilities that run under Linux. I had originally used the Samsung utility for the secure erase, but PartedMagic will do the same. PartedMagic also has a utility to scan a drive for files. I ran it on both my SSD and the iSSD and it turned up nothing.
At this point, I have no idea why my full version of Windows 8 will install on the SSD. I'm waiting to hear back from Asus with more advice. If I had a spare 7mm HD, for a test, I would see if I could install Windows on it. That would tell me that the UX32VD is setup properly to install Windows, at least on an HD. I have no evidence that would suggest my SSD is defective either. I was going to test installing Windows 8 on the iSSD, but setup reports back that there is not enough space for Windows to install.
Hopefully, you will have better luck. -
Wow you that sounds like a real pain. Out of curiosity what happened when you tried to install windows 7? You said it didn't work either?

for all those have same issues with USB 3.0 ports under Windows 8 as I mentioned. It seems that I got an solution for me. There is possiblity to use Intel USB 3.0 drivers for Windows 8 (however these drivers are intendet for Win 7) with slight modifications of the inf files and by disabling of signature verification. Now I have same perofrmance of USB 3.0 devices which I had in windows 7 and I'm also happy with it.
Just as an reference how to apply the "hack": https://docs.google.com/viewer?pid=...d9SrNBPnFb8lA&a=v&rel=zip;z3;Instructions.txt -

Update: The SSD is no longer recognized in the BIOS. Under SATA, the first drive is blank and the iSSD shows up as the second drive. I replaced the SSD with the HD that came with the UX32VD and it booted without any problems. I placed the SSD in a USB enclosure, plugged it into the UX32VD and nothing showed up in Disk Manager.
Maybe the root cause of all the problems I encountered was a faulty SSD that finally failed completely. I'll RMA it for a replacement. -
Anyways, I did buy a UX32VD-R4002H yesterday, and now I'm considering trying to get a copy of Windows 7 instead and installing it on the SSD. I was skeptical about Windows 8 but figured, how much of a screw up can it really be.. well my first impression is that its a huge screw up
So, Ive read you can downgrade your Windows 8 to Windows 7, is this possible on the ASUS? Im concerned it might only be possible if its a Pro Win 8.
And also, except for the OS itself, is there anything on the laptop that works much better in win8? -
Well, I gave up on running windows 8. I still had a few win7 serials in my stuff (made a provision of these a while back when I was still a student). I found a tutorial on the web how to include the usb3 drivers in the win7 installation drive.
The only glitch I had was that once the installation wizzard is done, the usb3 drivers weren't on the freshly installed win7. I had to send the usb3 drivers installation package (from asus website) via bluetooth from another pc. Then with usb3 working I could put in my tumbdrive and install the official asus drivers (video, wifi, etc.)
I didn't erase the contents of the iSSD or the original HDD (I installed as Samsung 830 in it) so at any moment I can swap the hard drive and have windows8 running. I'll try it like that for a while and once I'm 100% sure about which OS I want to have I'll wipe the HDD and use it in an external enclosure. -
How long does the battery life lasts under Windows 8 (web surfing and light stuff)?

Ive now installed RAM, SSD and reinstalled a fresh Windows 8 on the system.
The verdict is - piece of cake! I was expecting alot more trouble after reading here. I don't think Ive run into a single issue. I got a hold of sv_windows_8_x64_dvd_915422.iso (swedish since the computer is bought in sweden), verified the SHA1 hash that can be found on the MSDN site, unpacked the ISO onto a 16gb USB3.0 drive, made the drive uefi bootable. Installed the SSD drive, booted the USB in UEFI mode and just installed, no windows key was ever entered.
Once windows installer was done I installed the following drivers from asus site, and in the order that I type them:
Chipset_Intel_Win8_64_Z9301021
ATKPackage_Win8_64_Z100022
VGA_nVidia_Win8_64_Z918130614.zip

CardReader_Realtek_Win8_64_Z61840039030
WirelessRadioControl_Win8_64_Z1001
I also tried installing VGA_Intel_Win8_64_Z917102843 but apparantly newer version was already installed so skipped that.
So far Ive had no errors and I have no unidentified devices.
Is there any ASUS program I haven't installed thats worth installing? -
well you install Asus Live Update which is checking the Asus servers for new drivers - but that's not really that important.
concerning VGA driver: I never used the Asus ones....Always downloaded the newest directly from Intel or nVidia, same for some other stuff....The Asus HP is really slow concerning updates.... -
I was trying to use my VGA adapter that came with the UX32VD but no louck. The computer says it cant detect the projector. Ive tried all modes for the VGA in windows. Then the bloodything decided to disable my touch pad in amongts plugging the adapter in and out.
Anyone else had anyluck ? -
I had all the drivers installed on the ux32vd for the windows 8, but my screen seems to be dimmer than when I had it in windows 7. I had turned off auto dimming in windows 8, but it still seems to be dimmer
anyone has a solution? -
This issue is due to the Nvidia video driver. I had this problem too, then I reverted back to the oldest Nvidia drivers you can find on asus's website, then you'll be fine not a hardware issue.
-
for the people who have problems with installing windows etc and do not have a key:
did you check your power supply? I just found a Microsoft sticker on it including the serial of my Windows! -
-
Well I dont know. I had a spare Win7 ultimate when I upgraded mine with a SSD.
I have an upgrade version of Win8 which came with it's own key - and didn't need a Win7 key to install it ^^
Could have been, that there is a key too with the newer ones. -
Can I just delete the 200gb D drive partition? I'm never going to use it, and I want more space on C.
Any reason why this is a bad idea? -
bad reason ?
if u keep the D drive, u can back up your files into D drive , such as drivers that you need to install after you format your laptop , movies , song or document . -
UX32VD with transcend SSD , kingston 1600 8GB .
power state driver failure after upgraded to windows 8 from windows 7
or is there any solution for me to solve the problem?
Planning to do a clean install for windows 8 but any idea where can I get the iso file? -
-
Okay since the 32vd-db71 is discont... I am going to buy the DH71.
Same thing just comes with win8.. I'll down grade to win7 anyways.
Okay so I am going to buy:
SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256B/WW 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
But what ram do you guys recommend?
People are saying "KINGSTON 8GB 1600MHZ CAS11" But then people are saying Kingston sucks.
I have to make sure it's CAS11 right? - Can someone link me to a good reliable 8gb stick of ram that is compatible with the ux32vd -
-
Hey guys, got my UX32VD Win8 edition yesterday.
Installed the SAmsung 830 SSD disk and 8GB Crucial RAM on my it.
Very easy, just downloaded the Win8 iso, prepared it on a usb stick, and installed. Activated fine with no serial, and the laptop is nice and fast

I also installed the latest Win 8 Intel HD 4000 drivers from intel webpage and latest nvidia drivers from nvidia webpage.
Did i miss any drivers? -
I think it was one of the "others" under the drivers ASUS - Notebooks- ASUS ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD
Ps. I also run the 830 SSD and W8. It boots blazingly fast!
Windows 8 x64 boots quick on Asus ux32vd ssd - YouTube << here is my ux32vd w8 boot on samsung 830 256gb ssd.
If I were to buy an SSD today, it would be the 840 from Samsung But the 830 is still a very good contender and slightly cheaper than the 840.
The 840 is both faster and uses less power (lower production technique and a better processor, also a new way to use ram chips). -
I forgot to mention, when i installed the TPM_Infineon_Win8_64_Z430003137 driver, i got an error msg:
"Trusted Platform Module could not be found."
I guess this might explain the Unknown Device
Any ideas to get it to install? -
Concerning TPM - as far as I know/thought: there isn't a TPM module installed. -
-
Should I buy the samsung 830 series or the 840?
The 830 is more expensive than the 840?
Samsung 256GB 830 Series Internal 2.5" Solid MZ-7PC256B/WW
Is it because the 840 is 250gb and the 830 is 256gb?
Samsung 250GB 840 Series 2.5" Solid State Drive MZ-7TD250BW
which one is btter? -
-
I have a lot of bad experience with the sanforce SSD-s like OCZ and Corsair. (random bsod, drive failures, etc).
the 830 has a great reputation and I use it. The 840 should in theory outperform it in all ways!
Ps. there are several versions of the 840, also one pro model.
Then I paid for the W8 upgrade.and got the x64 W8 pro. I updated when logged in.
Since the UX32VD does not have a dvdrom, you need to have an usb dvdrom or make a bootable memory stick (I did the latter).
Ps. I also read you should not clone the regular hdd to ssd if you want the best performance.
It was something about where windows allocates spaces. I dont know if it's an urban legende or not, but they claimed you get better performance if you do a clean install, due to the allocation areas..
Also remember to install the samsung ssd application, as it will do some changes in your OS if it's not correct set up. -
Btw. I have a tip for you ux32 guys. Since there are a lot of you, I guess some others may encounter what I encountered.
Some times it would feel like suddenly the ux32vd lost focus of input fields.
Some times the keyboard didnt respond that well... It turned out that either when I did the SSD upgrade or my extensive usage of the ultrabook made the cable attachers come loose.
I didnt disassemble any cables when fitting the SSD, as I could just lift the battery. It worked fine for 2 months or so. So I think it might be vibrations from airplanes, security checks at airport, having the ultrabook in my lap all the time, etc.
Anyhow, just thought I should share it. The cable is about 2.5cm wide and it comes out from beneath the battery.
If the white tabs are not recessed (if they stick out), you will need to press them in. I had to press both at the same time.
ps. do not do this with a metal screwdriver, in case you hit some electornic components. (damage may occur). -
I dont think this is your issue, if it complains about cdkey but I always update bios and such before new OS.. I know there were some changes in the bios for W8.
Also remember to download drivers for WiFi and such, in case W8 does not install it. I think it installed fine on mine, cant really remember -
Two things.. one is just a comment...
1) Windows 8 installed without a hitch. I originally wiped everything on my computer and did a fresh install of windows 7.. A couple of weeks ago I bought the 15$ windows 8, and installed that (deleting all partitions and what not during the install so got a fresh windows 8.. It worked just fine. No troubles booting ever. I had installed a 512gb Crucial SSD m4, and 8gb of crucial ram. (i also did the thermal paste thingy, but probably i didn't need to)..
2) What is everyone using for touchpad drivers? I'm using the older Elantech ones.. Once I messed around in the registry (as discussed in a thread around here somewhere {by someone else}) I was able to enable three finger tap to work as middle click. which allows me to open hyperlinks into new tabs in chrome. which is how i like to browse the internet. What do people using other drivers do? Near as I can tell anything that has the ASUS smart gestures driver interface will not allow you to do this.
I really don't like how often i accidentally activate the touchpad while i am typing.. often moving my cursor to some random section of my text...
3) This is a bonus section for anyone interested in this computer. its pretty good. i used a UL80VT before this, and liked it. but it is HUGE in comparison. The screen on the ux32vd is really nice. Half screen spreadsheets contain enough columns to be useful. The sucker plays games really well. Borderlands2 plays great, as does starcraft, and portal 2 (these are the only games ive played on it so far).. It is amazing how light the computer is.
Thats all I got.. -
Just after W8 was released, there were no W8 drivers.
The W7 driver would some times stop working after sleep-state.
The current driver seems stable.
Before the current driver, I used the Samsung 900x3c driver (same touchpad hardware). -

Here is my UX32VD GT620 OC:
Core: +119Mhz
Memory: +115Mhz
I use MSI Afterburner. Tried some others too, but I like the graphs of clock, utilization and temperature.
Also you can easy save profiles. This clock is very stable on my ux32vd. I did some higher clocks too, but got some artifacts and I stepped down the OC a bit.
Drivers I use the latest from nvidia.com -
I was trying to set my movie-playing programmes to activate the Nvidia, but nothing seemed to work. I downloaded the latest drivers and my screen is totally black now, won't work.
These guys are having the same issue: http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus/695093-ux32vd-driver-corrupts-video-hardware.html
Here's what I've done to get to the bottom of this: (I did all this before discovering this thread, so I was not sure it was a hardware problem).
I was updating the Intel HD4000 on-board graphics card drivers when the screen when blank. After fifteen minutes, I powered it down and restarted it. The laptop booted normally and I could hear windows load, but I could not see anything on my LCD display. It is completely black/blank, as if the laptop were off.
I connected an external monitor via HDMI and that worked fine. When I attempted to toggle between 'external display', 'LCD', and 'both', I get an onscreen animation of my HDMI cable.
The first thing I tried was an uninstall/reinstall of my on-board and discreet graphics card drivers. I used Driver Sweeper in between installations, and ran all operations in safe mode.
The second thing I did was fiddle around with the 'display' commands in the control panel, adjusting resolution and whatnot. Nothing.
The third thing was an 'unseating'. I opened the laptop, disconnected the battery and RAM, and then reconnected them. Nothing.
The fourth thing I tried was to flash my BIOS. It flashed successfully using my Winflash utility. Nothing. After this, however, when I tell control panel to 'detect' my screens, it identifies two, as opposed to only my external, yet extending/switching the desktop to my LCD does not work.
The fifth thing I did was try to activate my laptop LCD using the toggle command (Fn & F8) in BIOS. Nothing.
The sixth was to run cmd and type chkdsk /f. This did not work either.
The last thing I tried was to reopen the laptop, disconnect the battery, and press the power button for 60 seconds. No go.
Everything I tried was recommended on other fora. Also recommended was to 'unseat' my CMOS battery or unplug the BIOS jumper, and while I have done both these things before on another motherboard in a PC, I can find neither on my Zenbook's motherboard. I guess they are on the underside of the motherboard. Seeing as how the laptop is so new, I don't feel confident/lucky enough to unscrew it from the laptop case and flip it over.
The following website claims I most probably (70%) have a failed LCD.
LCD Failures » LaptopTips
I don't understand how it is possible for this to be an LCD failure, because I was updating the graphics card drivers at the time, and the laptop is brand new.
If anyone can help me, in any way at all, I would really, really appreciate it. I live in a foreign country (Japan) and would do anything to avoid taking it back to the shop. I have literally spent an entire week, literally, getting my laptop up to speed. This little graphics thing was to be my last tweak...
Please help me and the other guys in the forum. One guy said Asus told him they replaced the motherboard and whatever... I still don't understand how upgrading a driver could damage hardware.
Thanks. -
You cant see anything? not even bios on the IPS screen?
I installed the latest intel drivers too, didnt damage my computer. But I read that other thread you linked.
At work one guy told me a windows update updated the graphics driver.
The same thing happened. However we thought it could be a virus that attacks the firmware. The pc was some years old, so we replaced it and didnt try too much to fix it.
Just extracted the harddrives. -
Is this memory compatible with the UX32VD? Amazon.com: Crucial 8 GB DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-pin 1.35V/1.5V for Mac (CT8G3S160BM): Electronics
It was recommended by seomeone a few pages back, but looking better at the specs it only mentions Mac compatibility. -
First of all sorry if my english is bad and secondly if the following question is a noobish one!
I've bought this ultrabook three days ago, since I've destroyed (I don't know why) my previous laptop's battery (it last now like 20min) I want to ask you a couple of questions:
1- There are tips to follow in order to keep the battery healthy ?
2- Is it bad to leave it plugged while I stay at home ?
Thanks
EDIT: Also my battery wear is 2,7% :| -
CT102464BF160B - 8GB, 204-pin SODIMM , DDR3 PC3-12800 from Crucial.com
Looks like the same specs as the MAC ram.
You can also look here:
8GB, 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800 upgrades for ASUS ZENBOOK UX32VD Laptop/Notebook, CT3340957 from Crucial.com
As long as the volt, CL and clock is right, also 204p DDR3 I think it should work.
I cant really say that the mac ram will work, as I know MAC gets special made harddrives so you cant upgrade the HD for cheap.
THey may have changed something like the height or something.
BTW I get dual channel!
http://valid.canardpc.com/2592375 -
Does the ux32vd support passing Dolby digital over HDMI? All I can seem to get is multi channel analog sound. I am running Windows 8 by the way. I think it should be possible but I just can't see the find any way to do it. Thanks.

Just bought this ultrabook 2 days ago, and loving it so far. I reformatted and installed WIndows 8 Pro (to remove all the bloatware) and have upgraded the RAM to 10gb and replaced the mechanical drive with a Samsung 840 SSD.
However, my only issue is that it seems I cannot change or enable the backlit keyboard when on battery power. When plugged in, it works just fine.
I cannot find any options under "Power Options" to change this, nor can I find a driver or anything that will allow me to toggle this through software. Pressing Function+F4 does not do anything on battery power.
Anyone familiar with this issue? -
If I bought Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model 992038
Would I get dual channel too? -
Tell me the best mem stick to use and the best SSD 256GB to use?
Everyone keeps telling me corsair, mushkin, samsung and OCZ.
Also should I buy the dh71 or db71? I think they are the same just the dh71 has win8.
any other differences? Should I get the dh71 since its not discontinued? -
