My SD MMC card reader is not working. Cannot read the SD disk. It recognizes that a disk is in the slot but noting happens. Currently on Windows 8 Realtek driver installed. Also, the sd card goes in half way not all the way like on other laptops. I can use the USB slot with a MMC multi card reader and the SD disk brings up the pictures.

My UX31E seems to hang quite frequently while changing the volume. The volume icon that appears in the middle of the screen sometimes sits there for up to a minute.

Humm, did you just get the laptop? Alright, you are asking a stupid question regarding the SDcard slot..anyway, it only goes in half way up - thats it. With Windows 8, its not supported by Asus yet? In saying that most of the apps/drivers work, but I have problems with the SDcard as well, I think you will need to wait for a Win8 driver. Mine comes on sometimes, othertimes it dosent know what the device it, it sucks. I suspect its a I/O, IRQ or USB clash with the webcam.

*just checked on Asus, the drivers are up, hooray!

Hi everyone, I just dropped my UX31E and the LCD cracked... huge bummer. I'm looking for replacement LCDs online, but all the online stores seem to be out of stock of this LCD... anyone know where I can find one?

Better yet, does anyone know where I can find the upgraded 1080p IPS panel that is used on the Zenbook Prime? Will this work on the UX31E?

    Thank you!

Has anyone had luck in getting their Sentelic touchpad replaced with the Elantech one? Also, do your Zenbooks make a high pitched whining sound from somewhere inside the chassis?

I want to get an external battery for a UX31A. Is there a power tip I can order for this yet? This is the only thread I can find about the power connector plug. Is it the same plug on the UX31E?

This thread on anandtech indicates that the connector is thicker than previous zenbooks:

    UX31 SCREEN IS TOO DELICATE!

Hi All, I bought the UX31E Zenbook a few months ago, thinking it would be perfect for travelling. Most standard notebooks these days are HUGE, and very heavy. Whereas the airlines can get very prissy about the hand luggage you take on board.

If you want to use the UX31E for this, my advice is don't bother. After taking the laptop on a few trips, permanent lines became evident on the screen. I talk to ASUS support, who said no problem, just send it back under warranty. However after they received it, they then turned round and said is was cracked and not covered by the guarantee! So I use it normally - I can assure you it was not dropped nor mistreated in any way - but they still refused to repair it as they should.

This PC is basically a toy, and you can't do anything useful with it, and especially it is too delicate to take with you when you travel. Furthermore the support people are jerks and their warranty is worthless.

My advice is: buy a proper notebook from one of the reputable suppliers. At least they'll repair it when something goes wrong.

Oh man, I used to work at multiple PC repair shops, now I work as an IT Analyst for a large company. I always, always, always tell my folks to carry on their laptops. The folks that do the luggage on most airlines will abuse the crap out of what you have and not give a crap while doing it. Even if you buy a high end laptop case, my company uses high end thinkpads, they still come back destroyed.

    Newbie here from OZ

I have a 31E. I have had a few problems, motherboard has been replaced under warranty as well as a new screen (half the screen just went black) anyway it is back now and works OK for the most part, the issue I have is the Wifi

I have read through the forum here and got lots of great advice which has improved things but not greatly.

If I sit at a table one metre from my router WITH THE SCREEN FACING THE ROUTER I get great speed test results and am really happ with how the machine works. BUT

If I turn the machine around in exactly the same spot and THE BACK OF THE SCREEN FACES THE ROUTER i get virtually no internet and the speed test is over 65% slower.

    Any thoughts suggestions or ideas??

I rang ASUS and they said it was probably interference from a microwave or something?????????????????????????????????????????

Anyway hope some one has an idea or 2

    thanks

Thanks Seth, I should have mentioned, I have tried different channels on my router with no change of any value. I called AASUS and they reloaded all the software on my computer using the F9 key on startup. Again no improvement.

I will be ringing them back today and will let you know how I go

A bit of a shot in the dark here:

I have a faulty UX31E that requires a new component soldered to the motherboard. I have been unable to locate any circuit diagrams and Asus are not interested unless it is sent in for a repair. The laptop is second hand and does not have warranty.

Is there anyone who has a faulty UX31E or is able to do a high resolution photo of a small area of the motherboard to aid in identification of the component?

    Thanks in advance.

Many thanks for the kind offer Riley. In the end, out of desperation I took an "educated" trial and error approach and we have managed to identify what we need to install to fix. The area concerned is on the under side of the motherboard in the chassis so would have involved complete removal from the chassis.

    Muchos Gracias

Is it possible to replace the U100 Sandisk SSD by a Crucial M4 mSata SSD ?
Is it the same connector ? Does it fit inside the laptop ?

    Hi there!
I have a HUGE problem! I flashed the wrong BIOS for my laptop. I used "BIOS 204 (UX51VZA)" instead of "BIOS 204 (UX51VZ)". Now I'm stuck in the fail bios setup. Any idea what can I do? PLEASE!!!

    Hey bone3552,
I have a similar problem, my ux31e wont light the power led nor any other led, thus the board gets heated, when connected to power plug no sign of live. removed Bios batttery and big battry pack to clear bios, but no sign of life, tried everything. could you please send me the details on the replacement you made to the motherboard and list the components/ maby a picture. i really would appreachiate it. I am desperate ... smd soldering is no problem, but figuring out which component is broke is impossible thus correct battery voltages are supplied and some kind of srange whir is coming from the mainboard controller when connectred to power. really sad, i love this ultrabook but i think maby it is bricked.
PS: it worked until i closed the display and then no instant on anymore...

I have a Zenbook UX32VD, but the keyboard is the same so maybe someone helps me :)
The only thing that really annoys me in the Zenbook is that you have to use BOTH HANDS to input Home/End/PgUp/PgDown. But I very rarely use the context menu key (the one between right Alt and Ctrl) -- maybe is there a way to remap it as a second Fn key, so I could press Fn+arrows with one hand?

I have a Zenbook UX31A-R5102F. Up until very recently, it would consistently awake from sleep by simply opening the cover. Now, I have to press the power button.

Any ideas how to adjust this?

I have 2 issues with my zenbook ux31e:

    1. When watching videos especially the computer might crash. This also happens without any specific reason. I've noticed that it doesnt happen if i have AC power plugged in. I've updated and am running 215 beta BIOS, it used to happen with 214 also. Im running Windows 8 fully patched. Any ideas on this?

    2. I simply cant get into BIOS anymore, i've tried F2, F11, F10, F1, ESC probably all buttons but none works. Anyone have any idea on this?

I have a UX31e and it does that as well, seems to crash, as in just switch off when watching streaming movies. No errors in log. Other people seem to have this issue as well, also when plugging in power it will sometimes switch off. Dosent happen when win7 is installed.

In regards to the bios, start from cold boot with the F keys. I had issues re-setting and getting into BIOS, its a really odd quirk.

I don't know much about your case, but my Zenbook had by default some software that, when computer is in sleep (suspended to RAM) for more than 4 hours, automatically hibernates it (suspends to disk), to save even more battery. Opening the cover is enough to wake from sleep, but to wake from hibernation I need to press the power button.

I'm about to send my UX31E back to ASUS for the third time. This will be my 4th RMA, including the first one when I sent it back to the vendor. All of this has happened since early January. My machine has been out of the house more than it has been in!

Hi all, I'm looking at a refurbished DH72. I've never had a Zenbook before but have tested one and really liked it. I'd be grateful if anyone could offer some advice on what to be aware of in terms of potential issues with this model (known problems to watch for). The refurbs are a few hundred dollars cheaper, and I don't think I need the computing power of the latest releases, but I'd also be interested in knowing what I'd be giving up by not buying the latest....and of course whether refurbs are a bad idea - my research suggests it's somewhat riskier but there are many people who went the refurb route and are happy campers.

    Thanks in advance!

Really? You have an entire gallery above of issues. You even have one above who is going to send in for time #4. What could I possibly add to all that?

That aside I think a very rocking Ultra. I do not have the exact model but I like what I have.

Also on a very real point. You have a very few people with real issues. Well having sold thousands or even tens of thousands. The odds are with you.

I just picked up a UX31E I7 256GB off Ebay for $599 brand new sealed.Couldn't be happier,my typing is not very good so the keyboard issues are not a problem for me,wireless is fine. The benchmark scores for the SSD are a little disappointing, but in the everyday tasks I have performed it feels very snappy to me!!

    hello everyone,

is there a larger capacity battery than what we have in ours now? We have the c22ux31 which is nice (around 5-6 hours of use new) but I am looking for something that will hold a much longer charge. These can also be found online for around $90 US.

On a side note what have you guys done to these ultrabooks since you got them? I am not sure about compatiblity on these so I have kept it stock.

    Power Supply Issue.

Hi everoyne. In a bit of an emergency here. My laptop doesn't appear to be charging. I can't tell if it's the power supply is dead or not. I recall that when plugged in, the power supply would have the amber light while charging and would turn white when it is done.

There is no light on when plugged in at all. I can't recall but is the light on the power supply supposed to be on when not plugged into the laptop? I just want to isolate if it's the power supply so I can order a new one.

For the UX31E, the power supply light glows orange when charging and green when fully charged or disconnected from the notebook. If you're not getting a light at all, then chances are you need a new power supply.

    Hi,

    Has anyone tried a UX31A screen on a UX31E?

I have a uz31e with a broken screen and thinking of replacing it with a ux31a, but not sure if this will work.

As far as I could tell the interfaces are the same, I am just concern there's incompatibility with signalling.

    Hi all,

    I have 2 issues:

1st- I was given a recovery disk off the person in which i bought my laptop from, upon trying to reinstall windows 7 it had a error and crashed wiping the SSD. So, whenever I attempt to reinstall windows 7 it says (Load Driver- A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a CD or usb please insert it now.
Note- If windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it now for this step)

In response to this issue I have found the drivers for the portable disk drive and the usb that I was trying to install windows 7 off.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

2nd issue- Whenever the screen is on, it produces a slight whining noise and only when it is turned on.

PLEASE HELP AS I CANNOT USE MY LAPTOP.

I have the media for the UX31E if you need it, just let me know.

To make the media usb bootable you need to follow MS instructions to create it, you cannot use a PE booter like YUMI.

Anyone else here running Windows 8.1 on his/her UX31E? I have a few problems since I tried the step and installed it a few days ago:

    1. Instant on doesn't seem to be working. Although the first night after I installed Windows (and before installing most of the Asus drivers and tools including P4G) I put it in energy saving mode by closing the lid and it didn't lose any battery over the night. Since installing the rest of the drivers and tools including P4G the next day the battery loss is enormous when I put it in energy saving mode. Any ideas on that? I read somewhere that Asus didn't publish the UX31 Instant On tool for Windows 8 yet, but maybe there is some workaround?

    2. The microphone just randomly stops working at some point while skyping. I checked the Windows sounds settings and it seems that the automatic regulation keeps regulating it down while I speak, until it reaches 0 and then it just stays there. I unchecked the "Give sole permission over microphone to apps" box because I thought that Skype was the problem, but no change after that.

I have an Asus Ux31e since 2 years ago. I experienced some problems at the very beginning but it was running fine in the last year and a half. Yesterday keyboard and trackpad stop responding (meanwhile the screen seems to work as normal) so I tried a hard reset (it was the only thing I can do) and I recall this happened at least 3 or 4 times before. After that the machine stop booting up. I get a message saying there is not bootable disk. I booted from an MS-DOS pendrive and run TestDisk utility, eventhought the disk (SandDisk U100 128GB) is detected I'm not able to find the partitions to recover. What I need is to know the geometry of the disc, headers, sectors, cylinders and bytes per sector. I tried 65,535, 16, 63 (CHS) with no luck. I think the disk was partitioned in two, one with some recover and the other for main storage. I had W7 64 bits and the system was never repartitioned or formated again (it was working like it come from the factory in China). Any help? Please! I'm desperated!

    Hi All
I have posted this post below in the wrong sub-forum.
    Hi All
My sons machine(Zenbook UX31E) has black stripes over the screen. It started some time ago with one small stripe(a few pixels) on the left-hand side of the screen. This stripe has increased to approx 1cm. ATM a large area in the middle of the screen as seen on the image. The machine is slightly over a year old. We have contacted ASUS and they suggested to send it in though gave no indication of costs or even if they may replace the screen for free? They mentioned to my son something along the lines that it is outside warranty.
Has anyone here come across this problem? We would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks and happy NY

I've got the same problem about 3 weeks ago. All I remember is that Windows 8 made an update and I let it restart the machine. It started well, but after about 30min use it crashed. After pushing the start button, windows logo appears and the loading symbol but nothing happends for a while. After that Windows informs that the startup didn't go well and it tries to analyze it. After that it goes to the "advanced boot menu" or what it's called, where you can try to repair your installation, refresh your installation or reset your installation. None of these works. For example when trying to refresh, it says "The drive is locked. Only things I can do is open command prompt, but that on X:/ drive and I cant save my files or practically do anything. The other working thing is to go to the Bios.

I have lost my faith about saving my thesis from the SSD, but as I have been looking for a new SSD, its been really hard. Only place which sells replacement SSD for UX31e I've found is Asus Parts, but the 256gb drive costs 450€ (612$), which quite a lot for 2 year old notebook. Should I start looking for a new laptop?

Have anyone succeeded changing the original SSD? Where can I find new SSD drives that would match with UX31E? DId Riley manage to do the upgrade earlier in this thread?
    Any help is appreciated!

I would remove the hard drive from the laptop and try it in another computer, like a desktop, you will need a converter though as its a mSATA. But the pendrive should be able to reformat it. If your trying to recover the data, good luck. It might not happen.

To recover your thesis, take the SSD out and plug it into a normal computer, you might get access to it. As above, you will need a mSATA converter, have a look at the ebay link. The computer should should hopefully pick it up and you can recover it. Also you can use Recuva (google it, its free) if the file system is really messed up.

I didn't try out the Mod in the end, I just brought a new laptop cos I got feed up with the laptop turning off when I unplugged it from the mains - I have windows 8, this is a known defect in the community. Also the webcam will crap out too, never got to the bottom of it, but I think it was driver or IRQ related. Anyway, REALLY annoying, nothing was wrong with the hardware - o/s, driver issues. If anyway has the trackpad issue where it jitters/flicks around really fast in the center, to fix it - download the the drivers from Asus and use them ONLY, it will resolve the issue. Make sure to uninstall/remove the driver from Device Manager first.

In regards to the Mod, it might work, its a mSATA connector - so standard. The only thing not standard is the size of the sdd, being longer. I checked the connector out before I upgraded my new laptop and it is the same mSATA connector, the only problem is there is a clearance issue between the memory chips and the SSD (when the SSD has chips on both sides). If you get a SSD with chips on both sides there will be a problem, you could find a SSD with chips only one side...but make sure its the right side!! Anyway, I haven't fully tested this, so try at your own risk

One more thing kbl, I think your SSD is fine, you just need to format it again, test the SSD with tools to make sure its ok, then install Windows again.

    Good luck.

    Thanks rileyz for you advices.
I'm also at that point that the last thing I'm going to do for this machine is ordering the module/converter and try to save the SSD and the thesis. Buying a new hard drive (ADATA or SANDISK) would cost almost the same as buying the same laptop used. I also hope that the drive is fine and would start working again.. allthough I've been already started looking for a new one :) Let's see how this works out.

Hey everyone. Has anybody upgraded their OS to Win 8.1? I did, and now I keep having all sorts of issues including Google Chrome pages randomly dying, and BSODs mentioning memory failure.

i recommend a complete new installation of 8.1 and no upgrade. i upgraded, too but since i had a lot of issues i formated my hard drive and installed 8.1 directly and now everything works.
you have to use the win 8 touchpad drivers if you have the sentelic touchpad
