Found this place while browsing for trouble shooting info on the UX31.

The main issue I'm having is occasionally the unit won't boot up from sleep mode. I haven't uninstalled any of the preinstalled software like power4gear and yet when I power it up the power, capslock and wifi (on the F2 button) led's are lit but nothing else happens.

Anyone else seen this issue before? Any suggestions for a fix? Beyond frustrating.

    Thanks

only time i have trouble with waking it up from sleep is if i try to "wake it" before it has completely entered sleep mode.

From you close the lid til it enters sleep mode (the led on the right side goes from constant til blinking) in my zenbook is almost 40 seconds.. If i try to wake it up before these 40 seconds has passed, I get no response.

    Maybe this is the problem?

Thanks DrDoogie but now definitely not the situation.

In fact, it seems my difficulties were just a prelude to the unit simply not powering up anymore. Have called Asus and they're going to pick it up tomorrow to take it to a local service center.

    overheating - possible ux31e dh-72 problem?
when i'm performing some heavy tasks, or sometimes when i play some games ( rarely ) cpu is very hot, top temp for me was 85 Celsius, fan at 5000rpm

i know that this laptop is not designed for heavy work, gaming etc, but should i worry about high temperature?

hi so, i now have the notebook for a bit more then 2 weeks and it is a very nice machine. And the keyboard isn't as bad as i read, i do make a lot of typos but not more then on my ex-netbook.
The only thing is when typing a lot i use a external mouse, because else when y am typing the cursor moves around a lot, because i touch it with my arm not knowing.
    But further a great machine!

    Hi,

Brand new here and I am finding this forum very difficult to navigate. I tried searching for the problem I am having using several different search terms with no luck, so I apologize if this question has been answered.

I just purchased the UX31E several weeks ago and love the machine. I was hesitant to get a machine without an optical drive, but, it is for my wife and weight was important ... she was suggesting a Mac .... noooooo.

Anyway, the recent updates from MS on April 10 threw the Zenbook out of wack, it would hang up on restart and I really did not know what else to do but reinstall from the recovery partition.

My main question is how do I reinstall using disc images I have created on an external hard drive? I am an old dvd user used to just booting from there. I really don't want to buy a usb optical drive unless I have to. I was prompted by the ASUS wizard to create a recovery disk, but since I have no optical drive on the machine I had to decline. I am pretty sure this is an easy fix, but, well, I need help. Please be gentle. :)

    Thanks in advance

    Hi-

Sorry for the post in the middle of another conversation. I haven't been able to find any information on this so I thought I'd ask before I start buying expensive cables to test it out.

I want to run video-out to two external monitors from my ASUS UX31, but I can't find out if it's possible to use both the mini-VGA and the micro-HDMI to do that.

Can anyone give me a detailed explanation on whether or not this is possible, and why or why not?

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate the help.

    Hello Everyone,

Im looking for some help with an install on my UX31. I got a little fed up with the amount of space Asus had taken up with Bloatware, as many other have.

So I set about doing a complete fresh install of windows from a USB drive. The only issue I have is when I select the partition to install on, I get the error "setup was unable to create a new system partition"

I have kept the "recovery" partition of the SSD drive for now, just in case, but wondering if I actually have to delete this and create only one partition inorder for window to install?? Does any one know?

If worse comes to worse, can I recovery from the recovery partition with out a copy of windows currently installed?

    Thanks

    Russ

with more than one conductor inside it).

if i look at the connector, i describe it as outer tip ring, outer ring and inner barrel.

the outer tip ring connects to the sheath. between the outer ring and outer tip ring, there's 1meg resistance. i am guessing that that one meg resistance is due to a resistor and capacitor inside the connector housing indicating charging. and that the outer ring measures battery voltage and compares to charging voltage. is it something like this?? it seems to me, though, that measuring current by measuring voltage across a shunt resistor would be a more accurate way of measuring charging. no?

anyway, Skymist, care to describe your connector as far as how it's wired? it sounds as if you used a solid outside (only one conductor) and not two outers and just modified the inside. yes?

    thanks

Sifting through this thread kind of scares me from purchasing the next gen zenbook haha. Would you all recommend the UX31E?

Also, if how replaceable is the battery if I'm able to grab one online? Is it completely impossible to access the battery or is it quite doable?

I had my UX31 for 3 weeks. All I did was close the screen, a few hours later before I opened it again i saw the lid was about 3 or 4 mm out of alignment. When I opened it the speakers popped out and it the hinge started opening up. Asus made out they were doing me a big favour repairing it under warranty because it was damage due to rough treatment. I wont repeat what I said in reply to that! 3 weeks later I get it back. It runs for for 3 hours. Next day it was dead as a maggot. Took it back and over the next 3 weeks I hear they were waiting for a hard drive........then a LAN module...........then a f*&king motherboard!!. But wait......now they have to fit a new keyboard!.
2 days ago I told them to keep the notebook for an appropriate use (paper weight or contribution to an artificial reef). I told them they had 3 choices. 1 Refund, 2, Replacement, 3 Small Claims Court. After having done some more research it is now down to 2 choices. Refund or Small Claims! Fortunately Harvey Norman have gone into bat for me and promised that they will make sure I get a refund or replacement. They even offer to use the funds to another brand of Ultrabook.
WARNING. The Zenbook hinge is a lemon and I believe that this is a major fault. ASUS are being a horses and pretending everything is OK. I purchased a top of the line notebook and I am extremely disappointed that after nearly 6 weeks I am still waiting on them to do the right thing.

No matter how you cut it, a L-Ion battery has about 1000 power cycles in it or about 3 years of average use. Over-charging can shorten the life, but assuming Asus knows what they are doing, the charging circuit should never over charge the battery, so what you are doing by unplugging will do more harm than good by putting extra, unneeded cycles on the battery. If you could remove the battery so it neither charges or discharges then it might help. You can't remove the battery so your best approach to cut charging cycles is stay plugged in.
Here is an article on how Samsung extends the life of the battery by allowing a mode that charges to only 80%.

    Hello all.

I have been experiencing a sleep/suspend problem with my UX31E, which otherwise I find as a wonderful travel computer.

The advertised standby times promise something like 1-2 weeks standby from a full 100% battery, but for some reason there is some kind of problem with the sleep/suspend with my Zenbook, that I have been able to get only to a fraction of the advertised standby times.

I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit, and I think I should have all the important drivers from the Asus site installed, including the Power4Gear application .. but with the sleep problem I am starting to worry if I am missing some crucial driver, or some other setting has gone wrong. I don't have the recovery partition anymore, as I reformatted my whole hard drive with the fresh install of the OS.

The computer does seem to go to sleep properly, it powers down, the fan goes quiet - but even with the lid closed all the time, it seems at some point to "wake up" on it's own - even once at my office, I was wondering a faint sound, and then I noticed that the fan of my Zenbook had turned itself on and probably had been blowing for at least a couple hours on a low speed.

Also many times when I take the laptop out of the sleeve or laptop bag, say after a hour or two travel, it is noticeably very warm, and sometimes even can hear the fan blowing at these situations.

When I open the lid at these kind of moments, the screen is always black, and it seems to wake up from the sleep as normally - except that the computer being warm, the fan blowing - and many times it will go from 66%-100% battery life to close to 0% in about 24-48 hours, most often around in one day - that is far from the two weeks.

I have installed the Asus battery meter desktop gadget which does show the estimated standby times, and it does indeed promise around 10-14 days at 100% power, but of course with my computer in the "sleep mode" it will be drained in around 1 day.

Any solution or help to this problem - I would be most grateful. If i have missed some driver or if there are some important settings in the Power4Gear or Windows power management, though I have been trying to go through these for several times, without any help. It seems bit pointless to have this modern laptop with supposedly long standby time, so that it would be "always ready" when you take it from the sleeve, only to notice that actually everywhere I go, I'm searching the outlet because I need to always plug it in, because it has drained all the battery in this "sleep", that it actually seems to be powered up all the time.

If I can get this fixed, would be very pleased with the computer.

My Elan "Smart Detector" does not work. After recently buying my UX31E I spent a few days updating everything (ASUS drivers, Windows), installing / configuring all my software, and copying over my data. While doing these things, I was constantly annoyed when my palms would come in contact with the touchpad. Before buying this PC, I had read there are touchpad issues so I thought what I was experiencing must be one of them and would just have to live with it. Then the other day, I was reviewing the "ASUS Tutor" and read about the "Smart Detector"... I thought, that's exactly what I need so I'll enable it. Well it was already enabled... so that was when I realized it just wasn't working. So I wrote ASUS support and their advice is to set the PC back to factory settings (this is exactly the kind of advise I used to get from HP and one of the reasons I decided to try ASUS). Well I hope this drastic action can be avoided and that there is a smarter way to get the "Smart Detector" to work. In the meantime, I re-installed ASUS' most current touchpad driver (Touchpad_Elantech_Win7_64_Z10590)... but the "Smart Detector" is still not working. I look forward to any advice any of you have for me. Thanks.

Hey, I was seriously considering buying a zenbook, but my question is this...
How is the keyboard quality? I plan to type many papers on it, so if someone could describe it to me, I'd be very happy.

    Hello all,

I recently purchased the Asus UX31E with an i7 processor. Out of the box, it had an issue that caused the wireless card to constantly turn itself off, and be off by default. Since then I have updated the BIOS (I think that I am now running on version 209.) That particular issue has gone away. About a week after I purchased the Zenbook, I started experiencing extremely slow wifi speeds. (Probably connected to the updating to the BIOS, among other things.) I have three other computers on the same interent connection that can load pages 5-10x faster than the Zenbook.

I have already attempted setting the wifi power settings to maximum performance at all times, this did not have any effect on net speed.

I have heard that switching to the older Atheros drivers might remedy this situation ( found here) Can anyone advise on a way to fix this issue without having the card replaced/bringing it in to be fixed?

I had the same problem. The OS and Drivers have nothing to do with an issue like this. It is a BIOS bug. Enter the BIOS by pressing the DELETE key while restarting. Then disable: resume when lid is open, and save changes. This will solve your problem, it did mine. FYI I do have the latest BIOS version.

has anyone had the problem where when you disconnect your ac adapter, your laptop just crashes/shutdown? This happens almost 1/3 of the time, and it's pretty annoying. not sure if this is a feature to remind you how awesome its boot time is w/ the ssd.

There's something weird happening with my UX31E (i7, Windows 7) and I hope this is the best place to enquire about it. So, I shut the thing down at night (with charger plugged in), the white light next to standby key goes off, job's a good'un...

...until I wake up the next day to find the white light is on and the Windows 7 log-in screen is there to greet me, as if it has automatically restarted itself overnight!

Am I missing something really obvious that's going to completely humiliate me once one of you kind people points it out? Or is something away?

Hi, I just bought an Asus UX31E.

It doesn't seem to have an option to boot from USB in the bios.
Is this the experience that other people have?
I was on version 211. I upgraded to 212 and the problem persists.

No CD/DVD drive means that I'm a bit stuck, because I want to install Linux.

UPDATE: I found the problem. You only get the option if you have a valid USB stick inserted. There was a problem with mine, but when I tried a different USB stick the option appeared.

I just got my ux32VD Zenbook yesterday and was really looking forward to it....now not so much... :(
I noticed that the fan noise is driving me nuts. I've got 2 Asus U46E-BAL5 laptops in the family and they are both super quiet...best notebooks that I have ever owned so I know it's not supposed to be this noisy! So far I have wiped the hdd completely and installed Win7 Ultimate, I was planning on getting an ssd & RAM upgrade but I'm not so sure I"m keeping this thing....any suggestions?
On the plus side...I'm not having any other issues ...LOVE the touchpad and IPS screen but I won't keep it if I can't solve the fan noise problem.

Hey, I have a Asus Zenbook UX31E that I bought a few months back. For as far back as I can remember, it's been giving me a few problems here and there. The main thing was the touchpad whihc seems to be fixed with the newest drivers update. Another problem is it seems that it runs a bit slower than it's supposed to. Opening up the task messenger right now, it shows CPU Usage at about 1-2% and Physical Memory at about 54% with 127 processes opening. For some reason, that doesn't really seem right to me. I know that it's not a "gaming" laptop or anything, but with the hardware that IS packed into these things, shouldn't it be running any faster? Any suggestions?

The last problem is the most frustration. I know that since the chassis is so small, Asus took special precautions to help the laptop to avoid getting hot. Well, that doesn't really work with mine. I usually keep the computer in High Performance mode with speakers, the ethernet USB dongle, a USB mouse, and a bluetooth keyboard connected to it. With normal usage, the laptop is fine. But when I start watching YouTube videos or really start multitasking, the fan comes on (decently loud) and the thing stays on and the laptop just gets hot! The metal parts (by the hinges and speaker grill) will actually burn your fingers and have to be at at least 85-90 degrees. I'm fairly certain that this is not normal. Does anybody have any tips to help any of my problems? Anything will be appreciated.

Hi, I'm new (as an actual user) to this forum even though I've been visiting it quite frequently for the past few years. I've always found answers before without posting but now I'm stuck...

I have an Asus UX31E laptop I purchased recently. I tried to update the BIOS but things went wrong and I think my laptop is bricked now... I googled a lot about the BIOS recoveries generally, but non seem to apply to the Zenbook.

Is there anybody who knows if it actually has a BIOS recovery and how can I actually recover it? I hope it's not the only choice to replace the BIOS chip (if not the motherboard itself...).

I'm sorry to tell you that you can't recover the bios. Your only recourse is rma with Asus so the sooner you contact them the better.

Okay guys... another wireless issue to deal with. I've done some searching and performed some fixes and I'm still having some issues. Here's some characteristics of what's going on:
When I attempt to load a site, I get the "Connecting" spinning icon. It takes much longer than usual (about 10-15 seconds), wireless then disconnects (limited connectivity), then the page says page cannot be displayed. I then reload after another length of time (20 seconds) and it works.

    This is an inconsistent problem
Occasionally it is every time I try to load a page, sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

    Some key facts:
    * This happens on all 3 browsers I use (IE, FF, Chrome)
    * This happens on multiple networks (Home, parents, school)
    * Tried multiple fixes, no improvement (details below)
    - Did THIS method, no change Asus Zenbook Wireless Problem Solution | Kirpi'nin Yeri
    - Updated all drivers
    - Performed all windows updates
    - Disabled all firewalls (haven't tried uninstalling or disabling my antivirus as a whole though (Vipre)
    * I did notice my BIOS version is old (v206) but this computer (ASUS ux31e dh72) is brand new. My friend has an older one with a different BIOS on it (his is the i5 version though). After having many issues with flashing firmware on my phone I'm terrified of doing it to my computer. Last resort to deal with this...

Can anyone help me? No clue what to do here. Seems like the BIOS update is my last resort.

Hi guys! I really need your help! I can only hear and feel one of my fans working! The left one. Is that how it should be? I'm a little worried because no air is coming out the other two fan holes. I would really apprieciate some help!

    Zenbook UX31e SSD upgrade mod

Has any one tried it, or seen stuff on the net about it?

I have looked around but I cant find anything. Im trying to upgrade my SSD from the XM11 to a Crucial 256 SSD (CT256M4SSD3). Asus have used a silly form factor so Im not sure of how to secure it yet.

I know the drive will work since they both use the mSATA standard, but the SSD size is different, the XM11 being like a gum stick, were as the Crucial is about the area of a match box.

I still havent been able to remove the SSD yet, the screw holding it down was really really tight :/ Since I was unable to remove the screw, I was unable to see how well the socket for the mSATA holds the the SSD, ie, how firm it holds.

    Ive had ideas such as...
*Making a extension with some plastic to add the length and secure it.
*Some insulation tape, secure to the lipo batt
*Since the SSD is above the RAM (eek), place a portion of static bag between the SSD and RAM chips.

    Reference:
    • A tear down can be found here.
    • CT256M4SSD3 form factor: 29.9 x 50.8 x 3.75 mm
    • ADATA XM11 form factor: 9.5cm x 2.9? (cant rem exact)

    *EDIT
I managed to get the SSD out last night. With the gum stick form factor for the UX31 they have chosen to have no chips on the underside (side to the ram) of the SSD, there is not much clearance. Maybe about 1 to 1.2mm at the most between the top of the ram chips and bottom of SSD PCB.

The clearance between the top most chip of the SSD and case is about 1 to 1.5mm. The mSATA slot holds the SSD firm-ish, but you defo need other means of secure it - thats if there is enough room which I think there is but it will be pretty much resting on one of the ram chips.

Riley, would you be able to give an update on if your Crucial drive is working or not? I recently purchased a Zenbook without a drive unknowing it would be such a PITA to replace. Also, from what I have seen, the connections for the Crucial drives and stock are different. It still fits in spite of that, though?

I havent got the drive yet, but I would think it was mSATA standard as the SanDisk U100 retail version is mSATA (but not gum stick format as needed for the UX). I would think that the UX31e would use the mSATA standard, it would make no sense to have a custom format..But hey you never know :)

If you willing to take the risk, by a old 8gb mSATA drive off ebay to find out. If you do, i can take my UX31 apart again and take photos f the ADATA X11 contacts for you to compare. From memory one side is solid contact right across (grounding i think) and the other side has all the working contacts.

    *edit
Your not getting confused with a normal SSD without the case are you? Check this vid out for the mSATA standard Newegg TV: Crucial M4 mSATA 256GB SATA III Solid State Drive SSD Overview - YouTube

I believe someone else mentioned that the UX31 uses the same connector as the Macbook Air. I'm not sure a stock mSATA drive will work for it, but would love to hear the outcome of your efforts.

    Please do keep us updated!

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that I read somewhere that the UX-31 uses a proprietary connector. I know for a fact that the Macbook Air and the UX-31 aren't compatible, though.

In response to the question "Does your ux31e power off when unplugging the ac adapter?"

Yes I have that same problem except it's when I plug the adapter in. I've had a general dislike of the adapter as a whole. The plug is cheap and flimsy. The charging light is inaccurate .. with small bumps or wiggles it will flip back and forth from green and orange. Finally, the shutdown\restart issue on plugging it in. If anyone know what's up I would love to hear and I'm hoping I don't hear 'hardware' anywhere in the answer unless it's the adapter at fault.

    RileyZ,

Did the Crucial mSATA SSD work in the UX31E? I have this unit but no SSD, and I can NOT believe ASUS or any other retailer does not provide a replacement. As if a SDD will never fail. Please advise. Thanks!

No I didnt convert in the end, the Sandfoce 128gb SSD was just too kick to replace, anything else would just be slower. If you wanted to try I would sugguest getting this from eBay. Its a mSATA SSD and cheap as chips - you can just buy it to find out if it will work, if it does you can splash out on a Crucial SSD afterwards. If it dosent work you only would of lost £18 which isnt bad. I would be very surprised if it didnt work, why would they be a**holes and not confirm to the mSATA standard - theyre arnt wanks like Apple I hope.

    *edit, added expletive.

Hi - this is my first post. Nice forum!!

I've been using my UX31E since March 2012 and love it - great little machine and powerful enough to use as my work laptoip.
However, in all this time I have never been able to get the audio in/out jack to work right. I need to use MS Lync audio often, and Skype for my job.
I believe the jack is meant to work the same way as the MacBook Air (and MacBook Pro) and accept now ubiquitous headphone/mic combos like the Apple iPhone earbuds, the Bose MIE2, Etymotic HF2, etc etc..
Over the months I've repeatedly updated drivers, reinstalled Windows, and been round in circles with ASUS a number of times via technical queries and even returned the laptop and had it supposedly repaired once on an RMA.
ASUS support are responsive, but were never able to tell me what headset the technicians used to verify their repair.
They also would never tell me any specific product that has been confirmed to work with the audio jack. Or any software either.

So.... can anyone here put me out of my misery?
Does the input/output jack work for you, and if so, what headset do you use?

    Cheers, Bill

    Hi guys,

my machine is actually running on BIOS 206 also there is currently 211 available. Are there reasons for updating the BIOS?
I am afraid of getting noisy fan issues like UX31A owners running on 211 because the silent behaviour is VERY IMORTANT for me.

Should I update the BIOS? To which version?

    regards
    Benjamin
