Thanks @p9892 and steelkerr, i've just figured out that my Zen is not unbalanced. What a shame, because i tested it on 2 tables prior to the conclusion of unbalanced issue. But today when i tested it more carefully on some other surfaces and positions, it seems that everything is normal.

But the speakers are still defective and unacceptable. I think i would return to Asus's agency to have further tests on this.

    Thank you again!

Ah i have one more question. My Zen has only one partition labelled "OS" sizing 111GB, and is being hooked around 63GB (the largest folder is the AsusVibeData). Manual docs says that there's a recovery factory but i cannot find it. What's wrong? And how can i repartition my hard disk?

The recovery partition is hidden, you should be able to see it via the windows disk management utility.

I think I just found out why the trackpad is so jumpy. When it's in a normal operating condition, the whole section of the trackpad corresponds to the whole screen. When it's in jumpy mode, somehow the trackpad seems to be divided into random different sections and each section corresponds to the whole screen. So, when you move your finger from one section to the next, it would seems to the computer that you jumped to the opposite direction. I found out while I was playing around in one area of a corner and I seemed to be able to control it properly. But if I move from that area, the pointer would jump to the opposite direction. I'm not really sure of my finding, probably coz of the randomness of the section division since it seemed to change whenever I deactivate the touchpad (by typing anything in the keyboard). But, if it is like that, then the fault should lie in the driver of the trackpad and not the hardware. Can someone please confirm?

    Hello from The Netherlands.
I bought yesterday the UX-31, i5, 128 GB SSD and I have no problems whatsoever. Everything is working fine. I see that I have bios 206 installed.

Should I update it to 209???

I had the same problem, crash on Windows Explorer. I removed a stupid Asus file and the problem was over. Only I don't remember which file it was, but I found the solution by Googling the problem.

General rule of thumb... if you love it, don't toy with it unless you're willing to take the consequences. There are instances in this forum where people brick the UX-31 and had to ship them back. When I first got it, I got Windows Explorer problem, touchpad problem and WiFi problem. I had to go through all their updates and lots of googling to get it properly working. Currently on 209 BIOS (again, updated through ASUS's newer version of WinFlash with no issues) and the latest iteration of its WiFi driver. After updating to 209, haven't seen any trackpad issues but I'm not really sure that they've fixed it. It's just that with each iteration of the BIOS, I'm seeing the jumpy trackpad issues less often. One thing I noted is that the occurance seems to coincide with using the instant-on feature (but it's still just a wild guess). I don't recall having trackpad problems when I use hibernate instead of sleep function.

Right now, other than the fact that it's really heavy to carry around, I'm loving my UX-31E.

NOTE: IF YOU DO DECIDE TO UPDATE THE BIOS ANYWAYS, at least make sure that the downloaded file is correct and not damaged. Usually when extracting a zip file, people tend to click through message boxes and missed the part where it warns that the extracted file is corrupted. If you get a corrupted file, just go through the download again otherwise you'll definitely brick your UX31. Again, this is no guarantee that you won't brick your UX31. It seemed to me that the majority of users in this forum won't use WinFlash from ASUS, but I did use it twice and had no problems with it.

I'm not sure how you can call a laptop just under 3lbs heavy, let alone really heavy. The only the lighter is the Toshiba z830(and by less than half a pound) and tablets.

My previous notebooks were 12,1" and 11.1" SONY VAIO Z's and 5,5" SONY VAIO U50, which is around 2 lbs or less. Their current 13" Z also weighs 'bout 2 lbs but costs 'bout 2,5 times more. If money is not an issue, I'd suggest others to get that. I do have to say though, I never had any issues with the VAIOs. My first VAIO Z lasted 8 years for daily use - bit of coding here and there + games + internet browsing (had HDD crash on the 4th year but loved the upgraded HDD capacity). The last one is a bit cranky for Z standards, so I had to put it in service for a bit and since I need a laptop fast, I bought UX-31.

    Dear all,

Regarding to my issue (4 posts earlier), i still cannot figure out which bloadware i could remove, and which i have to keep for maintenance. Any one please give me an advice.

Moreover, i've been dealing with a weird issue since my zenbook's arrival. Like other normal users, i went straight to Asus's support page to download all latest components for my Zen as soon as i received it. But the page which lists driver and downloads cannot be scrolled vertically, as a result, i can only interact with the first 4-5 categories (EMI and safety, BIOS, BIOS Utilities, Chipset, Audio, VGA). It even becomes worse when i try to expand these options, they simply spread out of sight and i cannot see anything other than my 1-page-height vision. I tested with all kinds of browser, including IE9, Firefox, Chrome... This page is paginated perfectly on my other laptops using same connection. What's wrong with my Zen??? Very weird.

Another small annoying issue is the "auto-Brightness" as someone mentioned in this thread. The screen increases and decreases brightness level freely without any reasons like it have a light sensor (which is obviously nonsence). And the brightness is hard to control. I tested it with Warcraft III. In game, i set to a high brightness level, but everytime i alt+tab to switch to desktop and switch back into the game, the screen is become much darker and only stop when i set it again. You may be noted that the in-game brightness level DO remain unchanged, all i have to do is just clicking right on the sliding button (which theorically won't change anything). Any one have an idea? Thank you!

I think I'm having almost the same problem as you do. But in my case, my internet browsers are unaffected. The noticeable ones are Microsoft's MMC snap-ins (one part of the window won't maximize/resize). I thought that it's probably something to do with the graphics driver. But since most of my work is not hindered by it, I haven't really tried to solve it. Maybe try to reinstall their drivers?

If you can't download any of their latest driver, have you tried ASUS's proprietary software e-Driver? It's in AsusTools folder on Desktop: AsusTools > System Tool > e-Driver. Mine did several updates when I failed updating from ASUS's download page.

    Any news for Elantech's?

I also think this issue is display driver-related. But the driver's version number matches with the latest driver on Asus website (used another computer to check that site). Should i uninstall and reinstall it? Or is there another way to correct that thing?

Edit: beside the support page of Asus, my Zen show others just fine as they should be, including those heavy-flash-embled pages FYI

I found out the reason for the utterly annoying Windows Explorer has stopped working error that kept crashing the Explorer constantly, pls see here:

Asus Zenbook Windows Explorer Crash caused by Asus WebStorage

The issue can be fixed simply by uninstalling the crapware/bloatware that comes preinstalled, Asus WebStorage in this case.

    Cheers!

I got bluescreens after using this driver. Its made for MSI Laptops and i think for a slightly different touchpad. My Windows cant handle some Touchpad functions after using this driver and crashed from time to time. Switched back to old Sentelic driver from asus hp.

    Be warned...

    Hi guys,
Does anybody here had the same problem as me? I had my SSD blacked out in only 5 days of usage.
The Sandisk 256GB stopped being detected by the BIOS so I cannot use my computer anymore. It is being extremelly hard to find a SSD to replace the original, specially because I'm in Brazil.
    Just to share my pain...

    hey guys

I would like to buy either the UX21 or the Macbook Air 11 inch model. I just can't really decide which one I should go for.

I'm a Windows guy and I never really liked Macs nor OSX so far. However, the Air's hardware seems superior, the screen is better and the keyboard and especially the trackpad are better as far as I can tell.
I'm sick of having to make a clean install when I buy a Laptop and I kinda feel like sending a message by buying a mac. Also I heard bad things about the UX21/UX31's keyboard and trackpad.

So here is my question: how many of you UX21/UX31 owners regret their purchase due to said flaws (screen, crapware, touchpad, keyboard) and would consider going Mac if they could turn back the wheels of time DESPITE the fact that you might not like Apple products?

    Thanks

Does anyone here use their UX31 as their main desktop computer?

One thing that concerns me is that the non-removable battery will die a lot quicker if plugged in all the time but it won't be using that much power since it will be attached to a separate monitor most of the time.

I've had mine less than a week, but fwiw, I have no regrets about it, at all. In fact, I grow more fond of it every day or so because I keep finding out new, cool features like the free 2GB cloud sync option from Asus.

This IS my main pc. I bought it for that purpose and it's working nicely, so far.

An I.T. guy warned me about using it while plugged-in so I only do it if the battery's low and I still wanna/need to use it. I'm not sure how it relates to how much power you're using, exactly, but as soon as I saw your post... I unplugged mine. :-D

    Hello gurus;
My apologies if this has been listed before, but I bought my UX31E on Saturday, I returned home from work this morning and it is refusing to turn on. Every now and then when I try it, the lights turn on on the CAPS and the on button, however there is no response from the screen. Less often, the CAPS, On/off and wireless lights will switch on, then the entire thing will turn off after 6 seconds. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way to fix this problem or is it just stuffed altogether?

Thanks so much for your help.

I've the same issue. I found out because repetitively, after around 5-10 minutes of inactivity the fan of my UX21 started to spin in a stronger way than when I was using the computer, and usually 1 of the 4 cores almost reached the 100% of activity. Then, I though it was a Firefox window opened with some Flash banner. But surprisingly it isn't so, and I used the Windows Performance Monitor to find which process was causing this behaviour. And I caught FspIup.exe. I think must be some program bug, some Timer object or "for" loop neglected. My workaround to this is stupid, but can be useful: I just kill the process every time I'm gonna leave the computer without use but turned on, and when I use it again and I wanna use the advance features of the touchpad I start the process. It works.

And for those all who complains about the WiFi range: it's true, it's a s***, it's too short. With distances of 8 meters you'll have connection problems if there's some wall between. With my old netbook this doesn't happen.

Anyway, I recommend UX21/31 if what you're looking for is a powerful laptop with a slim body. The keyboard is pleasant and the screen sharp and very bright.

    Hi

I have a problem with my Zenbook UX31. It dosen't power on when I click the power button. The power button light and the caps lock light does turn on but nothing is shown on the screen.

I also experience that after pressing the power button, the light in the caps lock shortly turns on and then goes off after which the light in the power button also turns off. The problem is the same wheather or not I have the power cable connected or not.

Is anybody else experiencing this and any suggestions how to get it to power on?

I work at a computer store, and I own a UX31 myself. So far the keyboard has been giving me some troubles. Sometimes my E, R, F and backspace key become non-responsive, and I have to push them down for about 5 seconds for them to do something again. Other than that, I'm quite happy with my purchase.

If anyone was worried about the static feeling you can get when it's charging - don't worry about it. This is completely normal on these types of metal devices. My other laptop does it, my phone does it, most of the metal tablets we sell at the store do it, and my UX31 does it. As far as I'm concerned it's nothing out of the ordinary, and it really shouldn't bother you that much.

    Hope that helps :)

It can be, but it definitely doesn't have to be. I've noticed this happening on several connections even in different countries, and it just happens sometimes.

Where can I download the AHCI drivers for the UX31E to load win7? Every time I try to install Windows 7, the installer asks for a driver. I've unzip the CHIPSET drivers and IRST Drivers onto a USB memory stick... placed it in the left port... pointed the installer to it... and... nothing?!

    -------------------------------

    Solved

Soooo... turns out the AI Recovery utility mangled the volumes/partitions and the windows install failed to recognize/fix this. Instead, it asked me for mass storage drivers. Turns out, rebuilding and formating with diskpart solved this problem completely. I just presented the win7 installer with an blank drive with a single empty NTFS partition... TADA... installing without a hitch (knock on wood) as we speak.

How much free space from the 128gb SDD do you actually have?

Is anyone else noticing high battery drain of their Zenbook when it is turned off (shutdown and not suspended)? I don't use my Zenbook all that often and I've noticed it looses ~3% of battery power each day without any usage. This seems much higher than my other laptops. Anyone else having this issue?

My Zenbook is nice but I'm starting to be a bit bothered by something I either never noticed or just started happening.

The weather isn't entirely hot right now, it's around 70 degrees. But the laptop seems to be pretty warm and the fan turns itself on every few seconds and gets really loud when I just have one tab open on the browser. What gives? I spent $1,000 on this laptop

Also, more than half the Asus software, including the AI Recovery and Bios Update tool all say the program stopped working when opening them. That's pretty annoying.

    Hi,
I have had my UX31E RY010V for about a week now.

    1. Keyboard
Personally i dont find the keyboard as bad as many people portray it. When typing with the computer on a eaven surface (not in ur lap or while balancing it somehow) i have no trouble hitting the keys (I use touchmethod). But when you are not able to hit the keys straight on it can pose a problem, as the key do not register and you "miss it". For me personally this means that i miss a few more keys than i regularly would, but the problem is not frequent enough for me to be annoying.

So I would rate the keyboard good, but not great. The best thing would be to go check out the keyboard for yourself.

    2. Trackpad
I have the Elantech trackpad with the latest drivers and I find it superb. The multitouch functions (dual/triple touch) works great and it is responsive and has a good feel.

    3. Screen
Great resoulution which means a spacious desktop for a 13". The colors may seem a bit washed (when brightness turned to 11) and it is quite reflective. But (as mentioned in almost all the reviews) the screen is very bright,
and it may to some extent counter the potential problems with a reflective screen.

I went for the top specced model with i7 2677m and 256gb ssd storage. It is a fact that the 256 gb SANDISK is MUCH slower than the 128 ADATA (which comes with some of the ux21 and 31), then again, the ADATA is about as fast as you can get an SSD nowaday, so maybe not a fair comparison.

I do not notice that the SSD is slow, my computer cold boots in about 15 seconds, and instantly wake from sleep, and all other operations is preformed fast.

I do not regret my purchase. I was looking for a portable, powerfull, fast machine with a long lasting batterylife and a sturdy build, and thats what I got. I hope this is a computer which i can have for some years to come.

Now if you have the patience, you can wait for the new ivy bridge model with matte full hd screen and backlit keyboard UX21A and UX31A is around the corner, but i think you would be perfectly satisfied with the current Zenbook as well.

I purchased a UX31E yesterday. I love everything about it, thus I am facing 3 problems with it.

    1) when the fan stops there is a faint whisper like sound (electronic circuit sound like it, it is coming from the left upper side around the tab esc f1 f2 buttons)

    2) touch-pad sometimes freeze for a couple of seconds

    3) when trying to type in Firefox or IE any text it won't type even if I close and reopen Firefox or IE, I have to restart the laptop to be able to type.

here are the specs and software
    i7 -2677
    4gb
    256gb

    ELAN 10.5.5.0

    1 more noob question

whats the best way to preserve the battery , Do I charge it when it is fully drained or do I always connect ac power whenever it is available etc...

    1. Touchpad issue:
Can it be ASUS "smart detector"? It is supposed to prevent you from accidentaly hitting your touchpad while writing the keyboard.. but the delay for the touchpad to be responsive after typing is annoyingly long if you dont hit in the "smart detector" area. it can be turned off in the touchpad menu i believe.

I find that when you get used to it, it works great

If anyone wants input on the Zenbook, here is what I think:

    1) I hate the keyboard, but I sort of gotten used to it. It doesn't register keys like people say, but I got used to it and it's just like a regular keyboard to me now.

    2) The touchpad is okay. Sometimes it scrolls itself and I don't know why. I use a mouse more because it's faster for me, so I have the touchpad disabled.

    3) The AC adapter is small and portable, but at the same time, it's short and flimsy.

    4) The hinge for the screen is strong and it's great.

    5) With 128GB SSD, I'd expect a bit more space than just 70GB free space.. I felt ripped off but it's always like this.

    6) The battery life is awesome.

    7) It is very thin and quiet.

I had no other problems than the ones I mentioned.

Hi I've recently acquired an asus zenboo ux31e!! (if it's right)

But the download and loading speed of asus zenbook is far too slow. it took me 30seconds or more to load this page. and i doubt that my old laptop (lasted me 3 years and is stil working), hp compaq presario cq35 would have taken any more than 15secs for loading this page.

and the downloading of movies and videos is outrageous. you can't expect me to wait an hour plus for a 30min video?!?!

    Please advise! :/

    Hi,
Strongly doubt that it has anything to do with the preformance of your laptop. There is a known issue with the wifi, but it shouldnt be that slow. You can can try turning on "high preformance" instead of battery saving mode, as this should take care of the known issue. But as i rather doubt that it is that.

I guess either there is some compatability issue with ur wifi card and ur router, or ur internet connection is slow.

two ways to narrow the problem down:
    1. try connecting to you router with cable - If faster - update drivers for wifi module and router firmware - if not - get new ISP =)

    2. Try downloading/surfing using another connection (a friends or some connection you know should be fast)

    Good luck

    Hi,

I have an UX31E-RY010V, and ive had it for a couple of weeks now. I Love the machine. Its fast and very portable, and the batterytime is GREAT!

I have just one problem and wondering if anyone else has this problem.
The "instant" wake up from sleep works like a charm, but the problem starts when the Zenbook enters sleep mode. This process (from close lid to full "asleep") takes 25-40 (!) seconds.

So if I quickly want to start up when i just closed the lid, example because i forgot something, I have to wait for it to sleep, THEN i get the instant on. Which in practice, takes the same amount of time as a cold boot er eaven a restart.

Is it possible that the way ASUS manages the instant resume, is by simply doing all the processes that needs to be done during normal resume, but preforming them when the computer enters "sleep mode"?

How long does your zenbook take for "falling asleep"?

    To make the measure reproducible:
I simply timed the interval from closed lid till the LED on the right side went from constant to blinking.

Make sure: NO A/C adapter and using high preformance power mode.

Best would be avg of >3 measurements :)

    Thanks in advance

Getting unit tomorrow. Saw 106 files on Asus site as upgrades. Please - can someone tell me what are absolute must have updates. Saw several BIOS updates. Can I assume the most recent one is what I need? Scared about getting this because of all the negative comments that are fixed my driver updates. Would love a list of what I should do to not waste tiem. Thanks

Picking up new ASUS Zenbook UX31E-DH72 tomorrow for wife. Cant get her to go to MBA. I changed over to Apple 5 years ago and tomorrow I have 8 hours to get her up and running. I hate Windows-from my reading this new ASUS unit will be loaded with bloatware. Then I can't tell from what I am reading if I need to update a lot of drivers. The ASUS site has 5 BIOS updates. When I went to the direction to learn my BIOS version all it had was photos of the motherboard. Please tell me I dont have to open this. I am so impatient I hate reading through all the posts on the forum. Can someone answer a few questions:
    1. Should I uninstall bloatware using the guide in the forum or should I reinstall Windows first thing?
    2. Do I need to update the BIOS? How can I quickly figure that out?
    3. What drivers need to be updated immediately?
    4. If you were opening the box on a new ASUS Zenbook UX31E-DH72 tomorrow, what would you do first? Then what?

Thanks. I have my work cut out for me because my wife has files all over the place. Have to locate all my old Windows programs, office, etc. and install. I want to make sure I start with a super clear installlation and no crap.

    1. Bloatware:

I did not find there to be too much bloatware.. I have read in a few forums that if you uninstall the power4gear software, you could have trouble "waking" the laptop from sleep mode.

As for the rest of the bloatware, you could probably remove it without any problems.

    2/3. Bios+drivers
I bought my Zenbook ux31e ry010v (european version of DH72 i believe) about a month ago, the Bios was up to dat (211), and all the drivers were also up to date, so no need for driver updates.

At least this was the case for the one i got.

    4. I would first of all would run all necessary windows updates, install the basic software i neede (as office etc).

the SSD comes prepartitioned with one 95 gb and one 135 gb + some system recovery partition. So either leave it at that, or change the partition settings to ur likings.

Now I would do a "ghost-disc" of C: then its ready for normal use....

All in all i did not find the bloatware that troublesome.. But i guess its a matter of personal preference.

    Enjoy ur Zenbook!
