(Sorry Continued from Above...)
If someone knows of how to activate a usb bios flashback on the Zen, Please let me know!
-
I got the zenbook and windows explorer is crashing regularly, as well as wifi signal cutting off.
Too much crap is pre-installed. Wanna do a clean wipe.
Question: can I reinstall Windows 7 Enterprise on it with external disk drive? As I did on my other machine (which is working much better as a result)?
Anything I need to look out for when doing it? Presume that voids the warranty too?
Any help appreciated -
I also had this problem (electrical shock), but if i try using at others place, the problem gone.
-
U can install any OS on it u want. Theres no voiding the hardware warranty with that. The BIOS is capable of booting off any usb storage device, (usb flash, usb dvdrom, usb harddisk).
All u need todo is boot the OS install, therefore all u need todo either make a bootable usb install, or write the install to the internal-ssd and boot off that, or boot off the network card.
I tried several diff OSes on mine, including windows 7 64bit ultimate.
Was just as easy as on any other pc. Just used a usb flash stick with a bootable install on it.
Do a full format on the drive, quick format is retarded unless u formatting a temporary storage location like a usb stick, not a OS partition.
As for software after a clean install:
1. i installed all the newest necessary drivers off asus's site, minimizing any included software in the driver package.
2. installed only the keyboard shortcuts app that asus provides, nothing else, since most of that functionality is either already in windows, or useless.
3. disabled alot of windows startup poop thats littered on a default install.
4. setup the power settings via device manager and power control panel.
5. installed the rest of my software...
I made images of mine in several states, so it would be easy to restore it back to any state that i made an image for. I also compressed my backup images and put them on a usb3 backup drive, so to save space and have them easily accessible for imaging from a relatively fast storage location.
Hope this helps
Now maybe some1 can answer my ques 6 posts up -

Dear all,
I'm trying to install from scratch Windows 7 Pro x64 on a clean hard disk on my UX31E notebook.
A problem during Windows 7 installation occurs, just after language selection and soon after pressing "Start" installation button (of Window 7), installation program asks for a driver (not specified wich one is missing) that obliges me to abort o.s. installation.
I tryed to make available, via an USB key, AHCI drivers for UX31E (x32 and/or x64) but without success.
Can someone help me? -

Tryed to install Windows 7 using an USB DVD player (LG Portable Super Multi Driver) using alternatingly both (USB 2.0 right port and USB 3.0 left port). No matter the USB port, it works withUSB DVD Player. The problem is a missing driver (I dont know the asked one) asked during Windows 7 installation. No chance.

Can anyone please tell me if the fan is able to still blow out air while the lid is closed on the Zenbook? I am wanting to use dual monitors with the zenbook closed while at home base. Has anyone tried dual 1080p's?
Thanks all, great forum! -
Many many thanks. -

Hey everyone,
After getting into contact with Asus regarding my wifi issue, the representative told me (via e-mail) to download the latest BIOS. Here's the part to make my point: she told me the latest BIOS for the UX31E is 209. She sent me a zipped file containing the BIOS download as well as instruction on how to download it.
The kicker (that we all probably know):
I can't find any information regarding this BIOS update. The only place I can remotely find anything is on google on German forums, but they speak of only downloading it, nothing too specific and into detail.
The zipped file name the Asus representative sent me was "UX31EAS.BIOS209". If you google it, you wont find much on it.
Anybody have any information possibly with BIOS209? Also, our wireless cards in the UX31E are Atheros AR9004WB-1NG. It's the chip residing on the card that combines our wifi chip with our bluetooth chip; you can find a pdf file from atheros with details on google by typing in the chip name. -
Anyone have any news on getting a replacement charger.
Damaged mine and need one asap. -
Yes, you can buy a new apdater here : Asusparts
But its 1-4 weeks before its in stock.
Is there any other way to charge the notebook? Usb to usb i.e? -
thanks, will take a look

Any adapter with the right tip, same voltage and equal or greater amperage will do the job to power the laptop.
-
The problem with the tip is not the size. Its the fact it has 3 pins and seems to have 2 different positive voltages, unless anyone can shed any light ?
ps, i ordered a replacement and will post how long it too when known -

Hi folks - I posted this in the general Asus forum as well. Bios 2.09 is on Asus's ftp site:
ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/nb/UX31E/UX31EAS209.zip -
I bought this one, and hope it will do.

Where can I download the windows iso for my UX31?
I really want to get rid of this crapware that has come with this device. -
Used cd key on power-brick. -
To anyone still having issues with their trackpad:
Open regedit and change the GearIndex value in "hkey current user\software\avc\fsp". It is at 6 by default. I've found 8 or 9 to be the sweet spot. You will probably need to turn down pointer speed after making this edit. Pointer speed can be changed from the mouse options in Control Panel. -

Thanks though! -

Do you have pointer precision on? -

Just got my UX31 back from an ASUS RMA due to bios update bricking.
Aside from the fact that the unit smells like hand-lotion, (i guess the tech found my ,) the display has motion artifacts when things are moving.
It doesnt happen using an external display.
It easily visible around the edges and color-boundries of windows when u drag them around.
I think they either gave me a bad board or screwed up the display or display connection.
Anyone else have this issue. Looks like aliasing/jaggedness on straight lines when they move?
I tried booting linux, and it had the same problem, so its definately a hardware or bios issue.
I am currently on Bios207 (the one missing AES acceleration [why did they do that?]).
I do have to say, that bios207 fixed the issue i had with the cpu fan always working, now it only starts when it gets hot.
Also have to mention that after i got my unit back from RMA, i noticed that the hinge is looser that it was before, and the usb ports and charging ports also seem looser.
They might have just given me a horrible refurbished board, which is wat is causing the display problems as well, but i think they just messed up the reconnecting of the display and possible damaged the cable or moved something that is now causing electro-magnetic interference with the cable.
Wat yall think? -

I think the real genuine complaint is the wireless.
Mine works OK for a basic 2.4ghz setup, but the lack of dual stream and 5ghz is a silly oversight. -
-
Yes, for sub $700 machines.
But my last $1000 machine has both and I bought a 5ghz router to get better throughput.
At 5ghz I get 100mbps reliably, at 2.4 I get 50 to 65.
A premium machine should have premium components all the way through. Especially when Asus decided no ethernet support is needed and connecting to networks is such an important part of modern computing.
So maybe the lack of 5ghz is ok, but a single stream card like the one we have is well below expectations.
I LOVE everything else about this machine, even the keyboard. -
Lan Speed Test shows actual read speeds of about 39 MbpS, write of about 40 Mbps -
Mine reports 150mbps connection speed, and I have 100mbps internet, so I get 50 to 65mbps using speedtest.net.
But on my old Dell Adamo with 5ghz I would consistently get 95mbps+. -
I received mine today. My relative brought it from US (i'm in Asia) and after a long flight, it finally came to its owner
When asking my relative for purchasing this laptop, i carefully noted about common issues and warned him to test the product thoroughly. He did, and returned to me a positive feedback of an issue-free UX31E
I was very excited, thought that i'm a lucky guy to have a good product (among unlucky zen's owners all over tech forums these days)
But today when i opened it for the 1st time, things suddenly went really wrong (of course my relative had touched it for some testing purposes and some other works - know via Recent documents, an already set-up user account, and the Asus PowerWiz)
The base of the laptop is not balance. I mean it's like there was accidental impact to the chasis (maybe during the flight?) so the laptop now cannot stand evenly on the table. It is lifted a little bit in the bottom left corner maybe due to a bent base (sorry for my English, wish you guys can see my point).
But it's no serious at all comparing to the quality of my ux31 speaker! I think the unknown impact is the cause once again. My relative confirmed that there's no issue with my speaker, but the product laying in front of me now has a very bad speaker! Buzz comes out even at middle volume level, sound is broken like a very cheap pair of speakers. It really puts me down!
Do you think it's because of unexpected impact during transportation? And how can i fix this? Is this serious problem?
Thank you! -
any advices please....
-
UX31 bought in Asia comes with two year international warranty. If you can't bring it bak to country of origin for replacement, then maybe can send it to your Asus service centre in your current place to have them check it out and and claim for product defect. Do remember to do your product registration online first.

Jilee, while it's impossible for us to know the causes of your Zenbook being unbalanced and your speakers not working, there have been complaints (very few - search this forum) about the ultrabook being unbalanced.
If there is an actual indentation in the aluminum chassis of the Zenbook, where it looks as if someone smashed it and there wasnt one before, then I would guess that your ultrabook was damaged during transportation, but don't quote me on that. If that is the case, that is the shippers/handlers liability (if you want justice). However, either way, it can returned to ASUS for repair with your warranty that came with your Zenbook.
