Same happened to me - screen just cracked - no explanation and of course Ausus want silly money to fix it (at least $460) I can replace the screen myself with a unit from eBay for $250 but for $499 I can get a complete refurbished unit. The hybrid looks cool and the specs are good but Asus customer service is the worst

I have the same issue with the outer screen. Is it really possible to replace the outer screen by yourself? Or do you mean to replace the whole display unit with both displays? Could you explain how did you do that please?

With the recent Windows Update looks like the screen issue is back again. For now I have rolled back the updated and changed the settings to stop the update. Not sure if anyone else are facing this issue ?

Not sure which update you're referring to but I think for most people things should now all be working. I'm fully up to date as far as I know and all working well.

Basic requirements I think are latest bios update from Asus site and 3412 vga driver version from Asus site, as discussed further back in this thread. On the microsoft forum Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1 recent discussion suggests its better (eg no upside mirror mode) if the previous driver is FULLY removed before installing 3412. There is a tool called DDU that can be used to do this from safe mode and takes out various registry entries etc as well as the driver. Asus close lid may or may not be important, suggest install latest from Asus but if still issues there is a later beta version further back in this thread which was never officially released.

My main worry now is all this talk of cracking screens (maybe worse on Taichi31 due to size?) I notice my Taichi31 lid now has a bit of bend in it which is pretty noticeable when it's folded down.

    Hi All,

I'm not sure if this is a problem everyone is experiencing or not, but I too have gone through the hassle of getting the BIOS update to fix the screen issue for the Win 8.1 updates.

My screen now works in all modes, however, on Mirror Mode it is upside down on the tablet screen. Is there a quick fix for this? I haven't been able to find anything, and my VGA and BIOS updates are current from Asus Support Site.

    Thank you!

As noted in my above post a full remove of the Intel VGA driver followed by a fresh install of 3412 VGA driver has been reported to fix this. Please try using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) from safe mode to remove current driver (even if correct version) then reboot in normal mode and install the latest 3412 VGA driver. Before trying you should make back-up / restore point etc. Let us know how you get on.

I just bought the asus 21 and I have only one issue: the battery won't charge more than 86%. I have tried discharging it completely and then leaving it off untill full recharge, but still gets at most 86%.
I have read about calibrating and/or remove the battery, but none of those is an option for the taichi, since there is neither any calibrate option in BIOS nor is the battery able to be removed
    any help would be appreciated
    thanks

I have just uninstalled power4gear as it's behaviour was a bit unwanted and uncontrollable. Thought I would share in case of interest to anyone else.

My main issue was that on battery it would always change me back to the P4G Battery saving plan and that this plan appeared to throttle the processor to 800GHz regardless of what the min and max processor %s were set at. Not sure if that is a bug or a power saving feature? I tested using RealTemp and the XS Bench, not really sure if that's the most appropriate but under all other plans the processor ramped up to varying degrees, even under the windows 'power saver' plan.

Having unistalled P4G I can now leave the computer set to the 'balanced' plan which should be fine for me 90% of the time.

After an initial test I'm hopeful getting rid of P4G has also helped with a couple of other small bugs I had, namely computer not going into sleep mode automatically and brightness reverting to 100% when switching screens. Will probably need a bit more use to know for sure on these though.

Rough speeds (from memory) for XS bench under different power modes, i have a Taichi 31 with 3317u i5:
    High performance - 2.6GHz
    P4G High performance - 2.5GHz
    Balanced - 2.4GHz
Power saver - 1GHz average (up to around 1.6GHz)
    P4G Battery saver - 0.8GHz (never moved)

    Cheers

Delighted to get my Taichi 21 back into full operation, it's been a long time. Total uninstall of the VGA driver, BIOS flash, and new VGA driver and I'm back in business. Had tried BIOS updates and fixes before to no avail so happy to finally be on the other side. Praying there is no major Windows updates any time soon as I have lost all faith in Asus making sure everything runs smoothly for us. Surely they should support the devices their premium customers and early adopters have BEFORE any other devices...

This should appease me for a while - and lessen my desire to ditch the Taichi for a Surface Pro 3 when it's available.

Been missing the moments on a plane when in preparation for take off or landing the stewardess tells me 'put your laptop away sir, only tablets can be used during take off and landing' only for me to close the lid and tell her to sit down, it is a tablet. Been missing doing that - can't wait to fly to meetings next week now.

Hi I was wondering if anyone would know the solution to this problem.

My Sons TAICHI is having an issue, when we close the lid we can see the windows symbol fine , however the display is so faint it appears to be black ( i thought it was a blank screen) but if you have a real close look in certain lights you can the display is there but so faint its almost impossible to detect, But the windows symbol is as bright as can be?

    Hey guys.

I faced the similar issue to everyone here after updating to the latest Windows 8 version where the outer screen wasn't displaying. Updating the bios and latest video driver seemed to have fixed that. However, I'm stuck with a new issue where the outerscreens auto rotate is not working. Further, when I'm in Powerpoint and hit the slideshow button the outer screen shows the presentation upside down (I'm assuming this is also to do with the orientation being stuck. While it would usually be a minor nitpick, I do use the outer screen from time to time to run clients through some presentations/demos. I'm running a Taichi21

Has anyone faced a similar issue after the fix and were you able to solve it? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

    Rgsd,

    Joson

Hi Lisa, I think this is to do with the Taichi being updated to the latest Windows 8.1 version. If you go to Asus support site for Taichi they have the latest graphics drivers and bios which after installation seems to fix the outer screen issue (though bear in mind, since the fix I've personally been facing issues with the auto rotate on the outer screen not working).

Hi folks, I just got my new Taichi 21 two days ago and I'm Loving it, but I had same problems with it, for the 8.1 bug I've upgraded the BIOS but now I'm getting another probelem, sometimes when I lock the screen and then unlock the touchpad doesn't work (but I had the same problem with other wind 8 pc's) and when I use it in tablet mode it doesn't works too, does anyone have any solution? the only solution is rebooting the taichi because trying to enable the touchpad with the f9 key doesn't work sometimes. Anyways after solving this ANNOYING problems it's a truly amazing device and I really like it.

    Hi all

There are a few recent posts suggesting issues with tablet mode, screen rotation, lock switch etc.
I posted recently what I believe all the possible steps should be for resolving the 8.1bug/second screen issues, and I have provided another summary below.
Basically I would suggest that people try all of these, and if tried and still have a problem then make it clear in the post as it would confirm that it's a new issue.

    - Latest bios update from Asus site (as per Taichi version)
    - Latest 3412 vga driver version from Asus site
    - Consider first FULLY removing previous vga driver using DDU (Display Driver Unistaller) tool from safe mode before installing 3412. This has been said to help with screen orientation issues and it has helped me with lock screen switch operation. Recommend back-up/make restore point first.
    - Asus close lid 1.1.8, or try 1.1.9 beta version if necessary which is available from an older post in this thread.

When it's working I still think the Taichi is the best hybrid design around, so fingers crossed any major future windows updates go a bit more smoothly...

    Regards

    Hi there,
I have accidentally deleted my recovery partition on Asus Taichi 11. I contacted ASUS who simply told me recovery disks were not available for this model. Surprising since model is not so old. I was wondering does anyone know where I can get the recovery disk from, link, etc.
Alternatively if someone was to make a recovery disk or USB flash backup of the recovery partition, I will gladly pay them.

imtiyazp, and others who need the recovery partition back: I have a Taichi21A (purchased end of 2013) of which I created a full raw image before ever booting into the factory installed windows 8. I should be able to supply this to those who need it, but there are some technical difficulties which must be addressed/noted.
My Taichi21A is a CW011H model, so it has the 256GB SanDisk SSD, Windows 8 (non-pro) Nordic version (contains English and Nordic languages).
Being a raw (DD) image of the SSD the file itself is exactly 256GB large. Since most of the disk is empty (zeros) it zip compresses to 24GB.

I can offer the zipped raw image to those having the 256GB SSD, they can then extract the raw image onto a (USB) disk larger than 260GB, boot Kali Linux on the Taichi21 and completely overwrite their SSD with my image (this is as "factory default" as it gets).

It's probably a good idea to create your own raw image (or "System Image Backup" from within windows) before applying my image if the re-imaging doesn't go as planned, or doesn't work well with your model (Taichi21 vs Taichi21A?). (Also, applying the complete image will of course permanently erase everything)

It may also be a good idea to update to the latest bios before re-applying my image (or re-installing in general).

To those having something other than the standard SanDisk 256GB SSD, it gets more complicated. Here it may be possible for me to re-align the partitions and supply a smaller fitting image (which also overwrites everything).

For all users, it might also be possible to only extract the restore partition (or maybe restore partitions, which may make it more difficult) from my raw image and apply only them to the broken restore partition(s).

How many would like the 256GB image?
How many need a 128GB image?
    imtiyazp, send me a PM.

ASUS has abandoned us with a poorly designed device that is fundamentally incompatible with Windows 8 and I have been told by ASUS they will not support my machine if I update to Windows 8.1 - even though Windows 8.1 is an update and not an upgrade, fixes several bugs in Windows 8 and has Miracast technology so that I can wirelessly project my screen on a TV or Projector.
I have done three system resets, downloaded several new drivers and a bios upgrade and had the machine at the service center for two weeks and problems continue.
I believe ASUS users should all have the option of abandoning the dual screen (as ASUS has) and have our TAICHIs replaced with a comparable ultrabook. ASUS has discontinued the Taichi 21 and 31. We have been duped.
ASUS TAICHI USERS UNITE WITH ME AND DEMAND JUSTICE - JOIN MY TWITTER CAMPAIGN TO DEMAND THE OPTION TO REPLACE THE TAICHI with a comparable non-dual screen option.

    [First post!]
    Hey Everyone,
I've been looking for a new laptop to buy, and I discovered the taichi a little less than a week ago. I'm planning on buying the taichi 31- the 13.3" model. After reading and browsing through the 37 pages of this thread, I understand that there have been some issue when updating windows to 8.1 . I was just wondering if everything is all set, and works alright. Once this laptop comes, I'm planning on first downloading bios 209 and installing that, THEN upgrading to windows 8.1 . If anyone has gone through this process, can they explain to me things that I'm forgetting, or things I should do some other way? I looked at lots of laptops. I was checking out the acer r7, but feel that because it does not lay completely flat in tablet mode and weighs over 5 lbs that it wasn't right for me. I think the taichi is perfect for me, but I just want to make sure that it'll be working. Thanks for the help!
    - M@son

imtiyazp, I didn't think about that. But I'm very sure you can continue with win8 pro even with my image. This is because your license is embedded in bios, I would think that upon first boot (when it takes some extra time) it will detect your license and activate the extra features. The idea with this is you can re-install windows 8 with a DVD/USB drive and it will automatically install the right version without asking for a serial.

In case this doesn't work in that way then there is another solution. Before re-imaging your device you use a key viewer (key extractor) to view your Windows serial in plaintext, you then apply the image, go to System Properties, then click "Get more features..." to instantly activate the windows 8 pro features. (but I doubt this should be necessary).

Robinlterrell, although I may agree it seems we are in the dark with Windows 8.1, I think it is a better solution (and more likely to succeed) that we continue to pressure Asus and Microsoft (to put more pressure on Asus) to resolve the problems. Keep sending error reports for the SunplusCaller, open support cases with Asus and request help (saying downgrade isn't an option). Put pressure on social media, like Twitter and Facebook where we write about how in the dark we are. No company likes negative comments visible to the masses like on Facebook!

M@son, I would probably do it in the following order:
    Update bios
(Uninstall graphics driver if suggested by others)
    Upgrade
    install newest drivers

    Hi everyone,

    [Edit: Here's my current configuration:

    VGA: 9.17.10
    Close Lid: 1.1.9
    BIOS: 209
ATKACPI: Not sure; have to check when I get home, but I think 1.0.0030.
    ]

Looks like I'm a little late to the party... Anyway, I just received my new Taichi 31 about a week ago. I installed all the required Windows updates (I think one batch of 112, and a second batch of 68), and updated to Windows 8.1. I then updated the BIOS and installed the newest graphic drivers from ASUS (10.18.10). Everything was working, except the auto-switch for the outside/inside screen would stop working and I'd have to manually switch it using the switch on the side. I did some research and some people were saying the prior graphic driver (9.17.10) from the ASUS website works better than the newer version, so I installed the 9.17.10 driver. Since then, everything has worked fine 95% of the time, with the following exception:

The auto-switching between screens sometimes randomly stops working. For example, if I'm in tablet mode and I open the laptop, the screen stays on the lid and the inside screen is dark. I can manually switch it with the Taichi Home button, and everything works fine. The only problem with doing it manually is when I have the opposite problem (i.e., I'm in laptop mode and I try to go into tablet mode). In that situation, I have to manually do it using the Taichi Home botton, but then the tablet screen is upside down when I close the lid, so I have to rotate the whole think 180 degrees to use the tablet. I honestly wouldn't care about having to press a button to manually change screens, but I can't deal with the tablet screen being oriented such that I have to rotate the whole thing 180 degrees when I flip. This is basically the same problem I had with the newer video drivers, but I'd say it happens much less frequently with the older drivers. Also, I loose auto-rotate feature. This seems to happen when the auto-switching screens stops working, but can also happen even when the auto-switch is working properly.

Based on what I've read, I understand that totally uninstalling the prior VGA drivers before installing the newer drivers may help. I'm going to do that, but can anyone offer any other thoughts. I'm running the newest BIOS (209).

Also, I saw reference in this thread to VGA drivers, version 10.30.10, but I have not seen them anywhere on the ASUS website or anywhere else. Does that version exist and where can I get it?

Lastly, I also saw that reverting back to the 1.0.0028 ATKACPI driver may help with the screen switching issue. Can anyone confirm?

Looks like there's not much activity in this thread anymore. In any event, I've done everything that's recommended in this 38 page thread, with the exception of rolling back the ATKACPI drivers to 1.0.0028, which I'm going to do tonight.

I used DUU to remove my existing video drivers fully before resintalling the 10.18.10 version, and I still have the same problem intermittently. Essentially, the seamless screen switching works fine, but at some point (usually when I'm going from tablet to ultrabook mode), it stops working. If I'm in tablet mode, and open the laptop, the laptop screen remains off and the lid screen remains on. I can hit the Taichi button, which brings it back to the inside screen, but if I close it again, I have to manually switch it to get the outside screen working.

I wouldn't mind having to press one button to make the screen switch, but the annoying thing is that when this happens, switching manually to tablet mode makes the screen on the outside orient such that I have to rotate the table 180 degrees. That's a pain in the . Also, the auto-rotate feature crahses too, so the screen won't flip around the right way.

Anyway, I'm going to roll back the ATKACPI drivers tonight and see if that helps. That's the last thing I can do to try to resolve this issue.

Can anyone recommend which DDU (display driver uninstaller) to download and use? I tried to download from wagnard but my antivirus software (Avast) warned me that the site may be malicious.

Any trusted website to download DDU will be appreciated.

@ brnp: From memory I think I downloaded DDU from Guru3D.

@kodiak1120: Any luck yet? I would say my auto switch works 99% of the time on my Taichi 31 so I could double check what versions of everything I have if it would be of help. Only slight bug I have is with brightness in that it reverts to 100% after switching screen sometimes, but can easily set back to required level so not really an issue.

@all: In case anyone is checking I just installed the latest August windows update, including optional so around 300mb+ total I think. Screen swithching is still working okay for me. Only possilbe bug I have noticed is that when not using laptop it seemed to take longer than it should for my screen to power down and for laptop to then go to sleep. Can't honestly say if this is persistent or related to the update though.

following a keyboard replacement, my taichi worked flawlessly then all of a sudden, the power button/switch broke, as of now its clearly not making contact, thus I can not power it up. any ideas on how to solve or troubleshoot this issue would be most appreciated. (Mr.Craft from 365 Laptop Repair has suggested to use the warranty and/or to buy off ebay the entire top assembly which includes the power switch. both are excellent ideas. however I just wanted to know if any of you out there had experienced this very same issue or had something to add, regards,

Having a really annoying issue with my taichi. Recently in tablet mode the cursor has a life of its own.. constantly moving any having things happen when it rests. Did a full reset, so not a virus...a restart makes it go away but after time it starts again... really driving me crazy...

    1. Try to clean the touchpad's surface.
    2. Remove driver and test to verify the symptom.
    3. If problem persists, try updating the BIOS/EC & touchpad driver.
    4. RMA the system.

Some ppl have mentioned a grounding issue with the screen. Should help to touch screen and, say next to keyboard simultaniously.

Hey guys, any way to use the taichi in tent mode?

I've noticed that my taichi 21 gets quite warm when watching HD videos which is quite normal. So cant place it flat when using the machine on a soft surface like, say a mattress or a carpet as it blocks the fan outlet. I figured that the tent mode would allow using the touch screen while having the taichi propped up on any surface. Only problem is that while lid is open, the rotation option is not aval, hence the screen seems upside down.

Any work around to this will be highly appreciated..

I bought a used Taichi 21. It has a problem with the inside screen (not the touch screen). Half of the screen (right side) is fine, other side is washed out and almost white. Other than that, all else works fine. I can kind of work around problem by putting task bar on right side, and moving icons to right side of screen.

hi everyone, so i got a stranger problem to everyone...
i had upgraded to 8.1... fixed all the drivers and everything was 100%
but now i inadvertently let it re upgrade to the wrong display driver,
in the process something went wrong now i only have use of the outer touch screen,
when i open it the internal notebook screen is just lit up black. if i out put that screen to a tv then i have a cursor but it only moves no controls or menus. im sad now it seems buggered as i have tried updating (roll back) the driver to the original working one. and now i have factory reset and still black screen on pure windows 8. does anyone know if the screen is broken physically somewhat?

    anyone have any ideas please?

    cheers guys,

Hi guys. I've bought second hand Taichi 21. It had hinge cover missing. I've ordered the part online, and got it today. I've tried for about an hour and gave up for the day to attach it. Anyone have any experience with it? I would really apriciate some advice on the subject. Ideally I would like to attach it without disassembling the whole thing, as the part slides in and I can attach it from one side, the other part just is big pain and I'm afraid to break it. :-(

Hello. I have bought ASUS TP300LD-DW095D + I installed Intel 520 Series 120GB SSD. Everything is working fine except FlipLock. When I put my laptop to tablet mode keyboard and touchpad doesn't lock.
I installed Win8.1 x64 (fresh installation), I've installed all drivers and device manager is clean like hospital. :)

Autorotation works good. I've noticed in last 24h touchscreen stopped working only 2 times (for no reason) but after logout/login or closing all apps it continues working fine.
I've seen you mention Intel Drivers to put them to an older version, but if I understood all of you had issues by updating from Win8 to Win8.1

Even external software would satisfied me (to disable keyboard and touchpad) but I was searching internet, there are no such programs. OK, touchpad can be locked by using FN+F key, but there is no solution for keyboard. I've seen people suggests to uninstall keyboard from Device Manager, but this isn't solution for me!!!

Any clue what can I do to make it work, the filplock ?

Hey. Rotation only works when one screen is active, its not connected to the lid itself. I think its limited by Windows settings.

You can manually change wich display to use in screen- or graphic settings, i think it might work but havnt tried.

So my Asus Taichi 31 died recently. I have an RMA number ready to return it, but I don't want to lose all my info on my SSD. I have gone to several places and not one of them has the equipment to plug in the SSD to a USB adapter or an enclosure to connect it to another computer and transfer whatever files I want.

I have looked online and can not for the life of me find the correct adapter/cable to plug in my Asus Taichi SSD and plug it in via USB to another laptop/computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would really rather not send in my laptop to get fixed and have it wiped without getting some files off of it. Thank you.

For reference, this is what the SSD looks like and the model number:

Have a look at a "bootable live CD...linux or Windows.."... Best is one u can use with a USB disk. Then try to save what u got on your ssd. That or boot from a USB drive holding a copy of Windows.

The laptop is 100% dead. I plugged it in to charge and smoke came out. It won't turn on at all.

The Taichi button lets you manually switch between screens, so you can use it to change to tablet mode and then use it in tent mode.

You should know this laptop has not been thought to be used as a tent, instead you can use the tablet mode with the outer screen facing towards you but in the laptop position (horizontal keyboard, inclined screen)

    Hey Guys,

im new in this forum and a proud TAICHI 21 owner since 30 days now. I am really happy with it, but I bought it used from the ebay site with 2 years guaranty. So far so good (I saved 600 Euros) but I am running into a lot of problems:

    1) The backlit keyboard wont light up (minor problem). I couldnt find many people with this problem. I tried the Fn + f4 combination, is there a other way of activating it?
    2) The touchscreen wont work properly (major problem). When I change into tablet mode, the touchscreen wont work, nor does it in any mode. When I start the system and quickly close the lid, the touchsceen works fine (when windows starts in tablet mode). When I open the lid, touch the mouse pad and close it again, I am back to the old problem. I dont know if its a driver issue, but I have a feeling it must be as the touchscreen does work. When I start the notebook in notebook mode, you can see the touchscreen cursor jump all across the screen and that only stops 5 seconds later. The asus support team doesnt have a clue, they want me to send it back to them for checking, which I dont want as I currently need it daily. I hope you guys have a clue.
    3) The RAM unit is always at +/- 70 % utilisation. I quit all programs and it sill is at 50% and wont get lower. Again, I hope its a driver problem as I dont want to send it back. When I use Sony Vegas the preview screen bugs really bad and the RAM usage is still only around 75 %. Maybe you guys know if its a common problem.

Id be really grateful for your help, maybe you had one of the problems above and could help me solve them. I flashed the bios for the windows 8.1 update, still the same problem. I reinstalled windows 8 with the built in tool, still the same problem. Thanks for reading, cheers from Germany :hi2::thumbsup:

If after updating bios, windows and drivers you problem persists that is definitely a hardware issue, you should send it back

I did that once now, you can of course just flip the screen so the windows button is on top where your hand wont be for an easy temporary fix.
