ASUS support randomly hands them out to customers. It might not be the final release version, but it works for me and others. [Solved] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working - Microsoft Community

I can confirm running the Taichi 21 bios version 211 posted above works great,
    Started with Windows 8
    Flashed Bios 211
    Installed Windows 8.1
    Ran all the Windows Updates
    Confirmed 8.1.1 installed

All Taichi features working perfect :)

I just updated my 21 to BIOS 211 and applied the update.

Everything works fine except for mirror mode - where the touch screen is upside down, as noted by others.

I have a feeling you don't own a Taichi, so you probably don't know this: the graphics drivers for this machine has to be approved by the manufacturer (ASUS) to be installable. I can't go randomly installing drivers from the Internet because of this, and so ASUS is the only source. A long time ago when the lock didn't exist, updating the driver removed my ability to use the Taichi screen, so I'm wary of doing so even without the lock. Thanks anyway, though.

The new beta BIOS for Taichi21 is a little buggy for me. Audio occasionally stopped working, and USB support was somewhat wonky (sometimes happens when both slots are used. One of the devices might not work), not to mention it didn't solve the Taichi screen issue for me (I probably need a complete reset, but now isn't very convenient). I've reverted it back to 210. Hopefully the new BIOS won't go the way of CloseLid 1.1.9 beta (never released).

Anyone interested in developing the screen switch app independently? I know someone did a long time ago ( TaichiScreenSwitch) but since I need to compile that project myself as a service, I never got round to testing it to see if it works/still works.

    it is too shame !!
where do you know I have no taichi (see previous post)
who did share first time bios 209 for taichi31 which I obtained it from asus by contact with them several times

if you are right, what am i looking for here?
of course recommended is we have to use what asus released at the support page
but as it is every body well know (You included) asus is too slow for release updated driveres here
for example there is no official bios for tai 21 yet

furthermore did I post here a virus?
did I post here a Trojan worm etc?
I wanted just share with people what I have in my hand...
yet to. I have already installed the that driver, after then I share it..
see it, it is from directly Intel
it is not from an other unofficial web..

    shame on you...
BTW what have you done for this people so far? himm?

Ladies and Gentlemen, it seems like we won't be getting a new Taichi refresh but instead a 2-in-1 based on the form factor of the Lenova Yoga.

    Asus TP300L 13 inch and Asus N542L 14 inch
    ASUS-VivoBook-TP300L-1.jpg ASUS-VivoBook-N542L-1.jpg

    Asus TP500L 15.6 inch
    asus-tp500l-laptop.jpg

Looks like a promising Haswell lineup and will surely be easier to update than the dual screen Taichi, however I wasn't too keen on the 4GB ram with no indicators of an expansion slot though.

I'm also having some of these new BIOS issues on my Taichi 31, mainly the audio functionality is hardly working now. Sometimes it'll work after a reboot (rarely), but the majority of the time I get no audio. Windows reports audio being played, nothing is muted. Tried switching out sound drivers which sometimes will resolve the issue briefly, but not for long. Anyone else having this problem?

Just bought a reconditioned 21. Installed all windows updates, updated the bios to 211 and upgraded to 8.1 with no problems whatsoever (at least as far as I can tell). Glad I got mine after the new bios came out :) Quite happy so far...especially for the price I paid for this (about $450 after rebate)

    Three questions.
    (1) In the first post in this forum some tweaks to the power management are recommended. Is that still the case? Any other tweaks that you care to recommend?
    (2) Mine didn't come with any cases. What do you all recommend? I want one with a pouch for the a/c charger (with the battery life on this, I'm afraid that will be a necessity.
    (3) Does anyone make a sleeve for this? Again recommendations are welcomed.

    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, no success with this driver either. Sound still doesn't work more often than it does. Very intermittently if it does.

Does anyone know if there is a setting to dim the windows logo light when in tablet mode?... it's very distracting when watching movies... I'd hate to find out it wasn't on a resistor circuit or something and is drawing 3A directly from the battery... of course, it's bright enough... that just maybe o_O

I''d like to do some experiments to find out if it is indeed an issue with the BIOS. Does anyone have a copy of the old Taichi 31 208 BIOS? For some reason ASUS is only hosting the newer 209 BIOS. Thanks.

I can confirm this works after reflashing the 209 BIOS despite it saying it's an "older version" Does anyone have the 208 BIOS or even the 207 BIOS? I can't find them anywhere anymore...pleeeease? This is my last resort being sending it back for RMA.

Hi guys, just got my taichi31 a week ago...and i must admit the first days things were really hectic...in Win 8 everything was working perfectly well. I did the mistake to update to 8.1 and then all hell broke lose....the tablet-mode was always upside-down, the mirror-screen was not working (touching on one point and another point was becoming active), etc, etc...spent three days downloading older drivers, older BIOS, etc...and finally, after 3 days of installing-uninstalling things, everything started working perfectly well on 8.1. Tablet-mode, mirror-mode, dual-screen mode work without any problems....so, yes, i'm now really REALLY enjoying it!!!!
I only have one question: i am using it to perform heavy theoretical calculations...and i could really use more RAM than the 4Gb already there....is this possible? can i simple add more RAM? does anyone know if there is an empty RAM slot under the hood?

    Thanx guys!

If anyone needs different BIOS versions for the Taichi21 or Taichi21A then I provided a lineup of the different versions here:
    Index of /files/Taichi21/BIOS_Updates
In the parent folder there is also the CloseLid beta which has been supplied in this thread for a while.

Dusktilldawn: If the recovery partitions are gone then I think the only option is to order recovery CDs from Asus, I think they offer this?

SunplusCaller is a component of the Asus CloseLid utility. I think that the component is used for controlling the webcams, maybe selecting which one is the default for apps?
Most important of all, contact Asus and report the "SunplusCaller has stopped working" problem! And keep annoying them with the problem. Also, when it crashes, select the "Check online for a solution" to report the problem to Microsoft!

Hey guys, has anyone here encountered charging issues?

I plugged in my taichi after I got back from uni and it charges for a second or two then disconnects, then charges again then disconnects. It's like there is a loose wire/cable or something.

Also my backlight on my keyboard stopped working after I got it back from Asus after requiring a motherboard replacement because of it not turning on.

Regarding keyboard, does any of the keys light up? For instance if you activate flight mode i belive one of the f-keys light up. If not, it sounds like they forgot to connect a wire.

Yes only the LED indicators on the caps lock and wireless keys etc light up. It is only the backlight for the kb that is not working.

    -----

I took back the taichi to my local Asus repair centre yesterday afternoon. I got a call at 11am today saying it was ready for pickup! Amazing service. Mind you, even though I mentioned about the keyboard backlight issue, I asked if they could ignore that as it doesn't bother me really and I need the laptop back ASAP because of final assignments and exams coming up this week and in the following weeks. The guy there said to bring it back when I have some free time for them to have a look at the kb backlight issue.

The charging problem was just down to a faulty AC power cord and they gave me a new one. Seems like the design is a tiny bit different especially the tip that goes into the laptop.

EDIT: I just restarted the taichi after doing an update and to my astonishment, the backlight on the keyboard works! They must have fixed that too in under a day! Looks like I won't have to take it back again after all. I'll let the front desk guy know that the technicians must have fixed the backlight as well as replacing the AC cable. Awesome stuff! This is the kind of thing that makes me buy more products from a company. A+ to Asus customer service.

I own a Taichi 31. Unfortunately cannot seem to get the outside screen to work (it did work with Windows 8 but not with Windows 8.1).
The Windows logo is there, but tapping on it gives no results. If I try to swich the laptop on in tablet mode (so with the lid closed) it does not even want to start up.
Taichi button does not work either.
I updated the BIOS to 209 and updated the VGA drivers also, no result whatsoever, i get a bit desparate. Anyone got any futher tips for me. Can you somewhere see that the screen is detected anyhow?
Any tips are welcome! thanks you all!

I would watch coretemp and the temperature of the charger if doing that for long periods of time. But the low amount of RAM is perhaps gonna be holding everything back anyway ..105C° is the max coretemp for this one.

Using the CPU, and other components, shortens the lifespan, and more so at 100%. But i dont know what to expect in time.

My guess is Asus will have to answer this since its almost impossible to change any of the parts. They will have to give you a minimum life expecansy for the whole unit.

I have the Taichi 21 and have the same problem as svrfan. Here's an abbreviated summary of my experience with Asus Support:

    [Problem Description]
Can't switch to alternate display anymore (i.e. tablet mode - cover screen). Have tried all the display options. Screen goes black, I close the lid, the Windows 8 symbol is illuminated bottom center but even touching it does not bring up display. Rest of screen stays black.

    [ASUS]
For this issue, please reinstall the following drivers in order for a try.
    ATK driver(V1.0.0030) http://support.asus.com.cn/Download.aspx?

    [Me]
I followed your directions exactly and now the "mode key" (immediately to the right of F12) does nothing at all.

    [ASUS]
For this issue, please install the updated VGA driver.
    Version V10.18.10.3412
    http://support.asus.com.cn/Download...3412.zip#VGA_Intel_Win81_64_VER1018103412.zip

Then download and update BIOS for a try.

Here is the latest BIOS version for this model.(TAICHI21, not TAICHI21A) BIOS 210

    http://support.asus.com.cn/Download...=3&f_name=TAICHI21AS210.zip#TAICHI21AS210.zip

At last, please don't forget to load BIOS default. Please turn on the laptop, press [Volume Down] button and [Power] button together, then please press [Volume] button to select the [Enter Setup], press the Windows button to enter the BIOS.
Then press F9 to load BIOS default. Then save and exit and then reboot the laptop.
Now your BIOS flash procedure is complete.

    [Me]
    I followed steps 1 & 2 as directed:
    1. VGA driver (3412) installed successfully
    2. BIOS successfully updated to V210

    Step 3, though, confused me.

I tried the specified key combos:
    1. from the desktop
    2. from powered off state
    3. from within BIOS (F2 at Post)

    Nothing produced what you describe.
Also, boot time is painfully long, now - minutes till Windows available instead of seconds.
And, the lid display still does not work. (Selecting "Tab display" makes the screen go black.)

    [ASUS]
Sorry for the inconvenience. Please load BIOS default as follows for a try.
Start tapping F2 as soon as the computer turns on to enter BIOS.
Then press F9 to load BIOS default. Then save and exit and then reboot the laptop.
If problem still persists, please backup your files and then do a factory reset to see if the problem will be solved.
    1. Turn on the computer.
    2. As soon as the computer turns on, start tapping F9.
    3. You should see an option that says troubleshoot, select it.
    4. Then select the option that says reset/ remove and reinstall windows.
    5. Then get started and wait for the process to complete itself.

Then refer to this link to upgrade to win8.1 again.

How to Upgrade to Windows 8.1 From Windows 8 - Guide - LAPTOP

Prior to Windows 8.1 upgrade, please run Windows Update and install ALL
updates, including optional updates, to minimize the risk of incompatibility.

After win8.1 upgrade, you'd better to run Windows Update again.
If problem still persists, please send your laptop in for a further check,
then our engineer will help you fix this problem.

    [Me]
I followed your instructions and after step 4 I got this message:
"Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.".

    [ASUS]
For this issue, please go into disk management to see if you have the hidden recovery partitions.
If yes, then you can reset your PC as long as the recovery partitions are not corrupted. If not, that means you can't do a factory reset via F9 during the boot-up process at all.

    [Me]
All the disk partitions show as healthy.

    [ASUS]
For this issue, please provide these information for a further check.

    A log file in C:\Windows\Temp\FacBackupDll.log
A screenshot of the error message you got when you did a F9 reset
A snapshot of your disk manager

    [Me]
    [Requested information supplied]

    [ASUS]
For this issue, your windows 8 system has a problem, it changed the recovery path, so you can't reset your laptop to factory settings even the pre-installed recovery partitions are healthy.
Now please send your laptop to us for repairing, then our engineer will help you fix this problem and your previous problem. Sorry for the inconvenience.

[Further back and forth led to advice:
    1. Send laptop to a Toronto address, roughly 2700 miles away
    2. My liability for repair charges since warranty has lapsed]

Bottom line: I'm stuck with an expensive, crippled laptop and no tablet function (the reason I bought this model!).

My reply got a bit short...the issue with no outher screen is fixed by uninstalling that update.

But the problem shouldnt havet been around with the new BIOS. ..so thats weird.

    Hi GMosley,

oh my, what instructions did Asus give you.... I still cannot grasp that they cannot give clear instructions to fix one of their topmodel laptops main feature namely the outside screen. Looks that they totally lost track of what to do and not to do to get it fixed. Bottomline is that the new bios update should have solved this problem. Are there more users out there where the outside screen still does not work after the bios update? Is there someone where it does work and give us an EXACT list of what version of the bios, Windows and VGA driver is used and how he/she got it to work? It sounds so silly and unnessasary (like GMosley has experienced) that you have to uninstall Windows to get that screen going again.

Anyone suffered from a cracked outer screen for no apparent reason? I don't use the Taichi that much and recently noticed a long crack across the screen. Wonder if it is due to adapters in the sleeve putting pressure on the glass but I thought was supposed to be gorilla. Asus want 460+ to fix. I can buy a refurbished unit for 499 with a warranty.

Have read other Asus computers and tablets have had screen cracking issues. Anyone know where I can get a screen for a sensible price or off load for spares or repair? Is under warranty but Asus customer service sucks
